July 13, 2024; Butler Pennsylvania.
6:12 PM EST.
Tessa and J lay on the roof of a manufacturing plant, North of an ongoing rally. It was a clear day, and they could feel the sun’s heat beating down on them. It was almost unbearable.
However, they have a mission to accomplish.
J’s right hand was switched out to a sniper, her sight locked onto her target through the scope. Tessa was currently scanning the area with a pair of binoculars. After a minute or two, she looks over at her armed companion.
“You have a clear shot,” She mutters.
J tenses up before muttering back a quick “affirmative,” and steadies her right arm with her left.
Her target is currently on stage in the middle of a speech. Hundreds of people have gathered around him, some even dangerously close to where she and Tessa were stationed. They seemed to pay them little mind, though. J focuses on the target.
She squints her eyes.
5 bullets.
She has 5 attempts to kill this man.
Anxiety begins to pool in J’s chassis. She could not mess this up. The thought of failing both Tessa and the Company made her feel sick.
As J felt her arm begin to tremble, Tessa spoke up again.
“Fire when ready.”
J, through a wave of fear, makes the mistake of screwing her eyes shut. She shoots.
BANG
Bullet one.
BANG
Bullet two.
BANG
“I think you hit him!” Tessa shouts.
J opens her eyes to see the crowd devolving into chaos. She then sees several men in black suits rush to the target.
…Who is still alive.
While blood spills down the side of his face, he rises to his feet with an undefeated vigor.
J’s heart drops.
“Tessa,” she stutters, “Tessa I missed.”
“What-“
“I MISSED THE FUCKING TARGET!”
As J finishes yelling, they hear the ping of a bullet contacting metal. Their heads whip to the source.
On a maroon building across the field from them, J spots a Secret Service gunman. Aiming directly at them.
Oh.
Oh they were fucked.
