Bound by Fate - "Becoming a Demon's Bride"

Summary:

Kalego never expected to be summoned by a human, or be forced to impregnate a woman who was in the same boat as him. Several months later, Kalego is reunited with his fellow prisoner who is just about to give birth. What follows is a series of obstacles as Naberius Kalego and Suzuki Asuna navigate parenthood and adjust to each other's lives in the Netherworld.

Notes:

HELLO! Another Iruma fic! But this one is mega different from my other Iruma stories. It's completely separate from the AU where Kalego found out about Iruma's humanity. So for this story, I thought, instead of Iruma being taken to the Netherworld, Kalego meets Iruma's mother, my OC Asuna, under particular circumstances that led to Iruma's conception.

WARNING: This fic features past child abuse, previous sexual assault, torture, scarring, and trauma.

Chapter 1: "I just became a father."

Chapter Text

Kalego gritted his teeth as his body was compelled to follow the orders of this lowly wretched human through a dark basement with only a lantern guiding them until they came upon the door. The man with dark blue hair smirked as he unlocked the door and pulled it open, it's loud creak echoed in the dark.

"Get inside." The human ordered the demon who had no choice but to comply as the familiar contract forced his legs to carry him into the room.

"Remember, if you don't succeed, the contract won't break." The human practically sang as he shut the door behind the demon.

Kalego glared at the door then turned when he heard a chain rattle across the floor.

A woman sat on a very thin mattress in the corner of the room, a shackle around her neck, reddened and scraped raw as the chain connected to the wall. A sheet wrapped tightly around her body, covering her head as her back was turned to the demon, her face staring through the only window high above her bed when the moon's light trickled in.

Slowly, she turned around to face Kalego, her face void of emotion, eyes dark and empty. Her skin was pale, and his demon eyesight caught the bruise on her delicate cheekbone. The blanket around her head fell, revealing bright blue hair and matching Egyptian blue eyes that were round and once held innocence.

"Are you the demon he summoned?" She asked, her voice hollow as she stared at Kalego.

Kalego clenched his jaw and nodded, "My name is Naberius Kalego."

"Suzuki Asuna." She responded, her small fingers clutching the blanket tightly around her.

"How long have you been here?" Kalego asked as he eyed the chain binding her to the bed.

Asuna glanced up at the moon, "I've been here for eight full moons. But it feels longer." She answered, her voice cracked slightly.

The scent this woman gave off is similar to the man who summoned him, only hers smelled sweeter and richer. It made his mouth water, but he remembered why he was brought here.

"Did he tell you why he summoned you?" Asuna asked, her head bowed as she stared at the bed with a look of sadness as her long blue hair cascaded around her.

"Yes. But I can't say 'no', it's impossible for me to disobey while I'm bound by the contract." Kalego stated, clenching his fists very tightly.

Asuna returned her blue gaze back to the demon, "You can still be free though, can't you?"

Kalego nodded, "Only if I..." He hesitated to speak as he didn't want to make this woman uncomfortable.

Asuna was silent as she bowed her head, a look of resignation on her face before her fingers loosened around the blanket.

Kalego's eyes widened when he saw beautiful naked flesh under the cloth. Her long hair draped over her breasts, concealing them from view, and he can see the curves of her body and her flat tummy. But he also saw scars decorate her skin under the moonlight, the years of abuse and misfortune written all over her.

"If it's the only way you can be free from him," Asuna touched her belly, "then do what you must to get out of this place."

Kalego slowly approached her, completely spell bound by her beauty. He sat on the bed but kept a respectable distance. He saw in her eyes compassion, kindness, sadness and sympathy; everything that is undemonic in the Netherworld, and not like that human man. He grew up on stories of how humans are greedy, yet this woman, perhaps she's a separate species from humans.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Kalego asked as he noticed hand shaped bruises on her wrists and throat.

Asuna nodded and held out her hand in offering, "We're both trapped, but only you have the chance to be free." She gave him a sad smile, "Besides, what can you do to me that I haven't already suffered through?"

Kalego clenched his teeth at the meaning behind those words, the torment she endured for eight months, the evidence plain for all to see. That sad excuse for a man locking her away and abusing her the entire time. Kalego may be a demon, but he doesn't want to be that kind of monster.

A large hand gently grasped her and slowly guided her towards him, the rattling chain  echoed in the room. He cupped her cheek with his other hand, noting how cold her skin felt compared to his warm calloused fingers. Asuna closed her eyes and leaned into his hand, it felt nice, much warmer compared to those other men who entered this room.

Kalego leaned his head forward until their foreheads touched, "If that's the case, I'll try to be gentle for both of us." He softly promised, not wanting to frighten her.

Asuna nodded as she opened her blue eyes, putting her trust in the demon.

Kalego brought their lips together in a slow and gentle kiss, tasting her sweet flavor while relaxing her. Asuna responded with the same tenderness, her other hand holding his arm just below his elbow. After several minutes of making out, Kalego gently laid her down on the bed and hovered over her. He already removed his clothes, baring himself before her, his warm skin surrounding her cold flesh as they made love.

Kalego shot out of bed panting, his usual slick backed hair in disarray and sweat matting his face. He groaned as he placed his head in his hands. It's been several months since that first night. He was summoned by a human for the purpose of creating a half-demon infant. The reason being to sell it to the highest bidder and become rich. For one month he was missing from the Netherworld, one month he was bound by that greedy human, and one month he was trapped with that woman, the sister of the man who summoned him.

Asuna, the name echoed within his mind as he remembered her, how gently and kindly she spoke to him telling him that soon he'll be free from that place. That sadness within her eyes as she accepted her fate as a vessel for demon offspring, how he wants to go back to the human world and wretch her away from that disgusting man. When the pregnancy was confirmed, Kalego fought like hell against the contract to bring her with him to the Netherworld, to protect their child from a cruel fate.

The second he returned, Demon Border Control asked him questions, but all he could say was he could not remember what happened in the month he was gone. His older brother, Narnia, looked angry and concerned for him during the questioning. Kalego should have told them the truth, but he feared that by doing so, he'd put Asuna's life in jeopardy, and the baby would be terminated before it was born. He couldn't let that happen, not after everything she's suffered. So he spent the last several months trying to find other portals to get him to the human world and save them.

Suddenly, a glowing circle appeared underneath him, making him look around him on the mattress. His eyes widened, "Again?" Then he was pulled through the circle.

Kalego appeared within a drawn circle with candles surrounding him. It was the same room within the basement he appeared in. His eyes darted around, baring his teeth as he searched for the human who summoned him, if it was that same man, he will happily rip his throat out no matter what punishment befalls him.

"Kalego?"

That kind and gentle voice made him freeze before he slowly turned and saw Asuna kneeling before the circle, a thick jacket wrapped around her delicate body and her blue hair in tangles around her. But her eyes, once empty and sad, were wide with hope and fear as she gazed upon the demon she hasn't seen in months.

"Asuna?" Kalego choked out, nearly falling to his knees at the sight of her.

Asuna let out a tearful laugh as she shakingly stood up, her feet bare as she wore oversized pants around her small body. She stumbled into the circle until she was in front of Kalego before she fell into his arms and wept.

Kalego held her close, she felt heavier than the last time he saw. "Asuna-"

"I killed him." Asuna whispered, "I killed my brother." She cried into his chest.

Kalego pulled back and held her face, "And the baby?"

Asuna breathed out shakingly as she slowly opened her jacket to reveal a swollen belly.

Kalego's eyes widened as he touched her belly, feeling the life stir within her.

"I felt contractions earlier." Asuna whispered, "My brother found out...he was ready to steal my baby." She shook her head, "Once he was born, he was going to resummon you to make another one. I didn't have any other choice, I was so afraid." She wept as she bowed her head, the traumatic experience of having to take a life to protect her little one and Kalego overwhelmed her.

Kalego's mouth fell open at what she told him, what her older brother was willing to do to make more money. He clenched his teeth, wishing so desperately to make that man suffer for what he put him and Asuna through.

Asuna's knees buckled when she felt pain her abdomen.

"Asuna?" Kalego exclaimed in surprise before he heard something trickle onto the floor.

Asuna breathed heavily, her mouth parted as she looked up at Kalego with wide eyes, "The baby's coming."

Kalego's eyes widened before he picked her up before the summoning circle glowed again. The light surrounded them before they were sent back to the Netherworld.

Balam was studying his latest find at his home when he got a call from his former classmate and closest ally since their academy days.

"Kalego?"

"Shichiro, I need you to come to my house pronto, bring every medical equipment and medicine you have!" Kalego's rushed response with hardly a greeting surprised the gargoyle.

"What-"

Balam was cut off by the sound of screaming in the background, they sounded like they were in tremendous pain.

"I'll explain when you get here, just please hurry!" Kalego then hung up.

Not wanting to waste any more time, Balam gathered everything he needs to help the poor creature suffering and flew out the window at alarming speed.

Kalego walked beside Asuna as she did her breathing exercises, she held his hand tightly trying to be as calm as possible. She stopped and gripped his hand, grunting when a wave of pain passed through her.

Kalego glanced at his watch, "Fifteen minutes apart."

Asuna groaned and breathed out deeply, "Human labor...lasts...for twelve to twenty-four hours...on the first pregnancy." She said before they continue walking.

"For demon pregnancies, it's six hours." Kalego tossed out that fact, "Though unfortunately, we're not sure about this type of pregnancy."

"Well, let's do the math, my labors began nearly three hours ago." Asuna breathed as calmly as she could, "So, theoretically, this should end in five more hours. But that's just a guess!" Asuna cried hysterically as Kalego guided her to the bed.

Kalego normally considered himself the most rational demon in the Netherworld, but right now, he has absolutely no clue what he's doing. Even though Asuna was a nurse-in-training before she was captured, it didn't prepare her for this.

He went over to the bowl of ice-cold water and rung the towel out before returning to Asuna's side and dabbed her sweaty face. Gone were her human clothes, now she was dressed in his mother's nightgowns.

"My ally will be here soon, he can help you deliver this baby safely." Kalego assured her as he continued to wipe the sweat off her.

"Can he keep a secret?" Asuna asked, her body shaking as she breathed slowly.

"Yes, humans are considered myth, and Shichiro is quite fond of the idea of them. If this has been any other situation, he'll faint." Kalego stated, knowing his best friend all too well.

Asuna breathed out a laugh despite the situation, "He sounds like a fun guy to have around."

Kalego rubbed her back to ease her discomfort, "He'll be here soon."

"Iruma."

Kalego raised an eyebrow in confusion.

"Our son's name is Iruma." Asuna held his arm and smiled with a hint of fear in her eyes, "I want you to call him that...in case I don't make it."

Not liking the implications behind that statement, Kalego grasped her hand and firmly told her, "You're going to live Asuna, I'll make sure of it."

Asuna's eyes filled with tears as she cupped his face with her hand, "We don't know what will happen. A half-demon has never been born before." She swallowed, "Should the worst happen, he'll need you."

Kalego's eyes widened as Asuna continued, "I know you're not ready to be a father, but Iruma needs your guidance. He doesn't belong with humans...he can't go back to that world, ever."

Kalego clenched his jaw, knowing Asuna has suffered this turmoil the second she got pregnant, the constant fear for their son's future should he be born in the human world.

The front door to his home opened before large footsteps echoed through the manor. The door opened and in entered a very large man with bird feet and a metal mask covering his mouth. His eyes widened at the sight of Kalego tending to a beautiful pregnant woman who looked to be in labor.

"K-K-K-Kalego...how-when-?" Balam had a ton of questions but struggled which to ask.

"Shichiro, take a deep breath." Kalego instructed, not leaving Asuna's side.

Balam did as he instructed and calmed himself down.

"Good, now, try and calmly listen. This is Asuna, she's the mother of my child...and she's human." Kalego added after a moment's hesitation.

Balam made choking sounds as he glanced between Kalego and the human woman.

Asuna, smiled through her discomfort and waved at him in greeting, "Hi, Kalego told me a lot about you, it's nice to meet you."

"Um, Shichiro Balam. Are you really...?" He had to fight the urge to squeal as he trembled like an excited demon pup.

Asuna laughed softly, "Human? Yes. Pregnant? Double yes."

Balam glanced at Kalego, a thousand questions in his eyes.

"I'll explain later, do you have everything?" Kalego asked as he held Asuna's hand securely.

This brought the gargoyle out of his stupor as he went over to the large desk in the room and set his medical supplies down. "I grabbed everything I could fit in here. I wasn't sure what I was dealing with when you called."

"I'm sorry for the abrupt demand." Kalego apologized to his ally.

"Luckily I had practice delivering manticores, this is smaller than a manticore." Balam muttered to himself sheepishly, mildly worried he'll hurt the human.

Asuna smiled at Balam as he turned to face them, "Don't worry, I have complete trust and faith in you. As does Kalego." She assured the gargoyle whose eyes brightened at her words.

The moment was broken when another contraction shot through her, causing her to grip Kalego's hand tightly.

"That was eight minutes. Contractions are getting closer." Kalego noted when he glanced at his watch. "Shichiro, do you have something for the pain?" Kalego asked his friend who was already in the process of creating a concoction.

Asuna groaned behind her tightly closed lips as she felt the contraction pass.

Balam appeared before her with a cup in his hand, "Here, drink this slowly. Small sips."

Asuna shakingly took the cup with Kalego's help and did as instruct, though it tasted bitter, she had worse as she felt the liquid slither down her throat.

"So, Kalego says you're both teachers?" Asuna asked as she willed her body to relax as Balam made preparations.

"Yes, I teach Demonic History and Mythical Zoology, I'm also an Imaginary Beings Researcher." Balam clarified, starting up the conversation to pass the time, "I also write picture books based on them."

"Oh, that's lovely. Would it be alright if I read some of them?" Asuna asked, looking enthused at the idea of reading picture books to help her better understand the Netherworld with her son.

This made Balam's eyes light up. "I actually brought my latest work with me." Balam said as he rummaged through his bag and presented them to Asuna.

Asuna opened it and her eyes brightened, "Wow, this is so cute!"

Kalego scanned the book's contents, "Impressive as always, and you brought them at the perfect moment."

Asuna laughed softly, "A perfect baby gift, our son will love this!"

Balam was glowing at the praise, and the best part, she's going to read this with her baby. "When I have time, I'll bring all of my picture books."

Asuna smiled brightly, "Really, that's so-GUNGHHHH!" Reality came crashing down when another contraction hit her, making her drop the book to grip Kalego's arm.

Kalego grunted as her nails dug into his skin, they weren't sharp demon claws, they still hurt. But he bore the pain for her sake.

Balam immediately resumed his task, "Right, birth first then books."

An hour passed as two demons and a human worked to bring a half-demon into the world. Now they were at the final stretch. Sitting in a squatting position at the edge of the bed with Kalego supporting her from behind, and Balam kneeling before her spread legs as he worked to gently carry the baby out of her.

"I see the head Asuna, you're almost there. Take a deep breath, and push!" Balam instructed as Asuna bared down, groaning in pain and effort as she felt her son crawling further down her birth canal. She stopped for a moment before Balam told her to push one more time. Gritting her teeth, she repeated the motion and screamed, holding Kalego's hand throughout the process.

Asuna slumped against Kalego when she finally felt the baby leave her body accompanied by a newborn crying. She panted, sweating and smiling as Balam cradled a very small blue haired infant in his large hands, the umbilical cord connecting her to the baby.

"A boy." Balam declared before he tied off the umbilical cord and cut it, he wiped the fluid off the screaming newborn then wrapped him in a soft blanket.

Despite the exhaustion and pain, Asuna laughed in joy as Balam presented her with the baby. "Iruma." She whispered as her son was transferred into her arms. She cried in happiness as she turned to Kalego who never left her side, "Kalego, this is your son."

Kalego's eyes were wide as he moved his hand to gently cradle the writhing newborn, "A son."

Iruma quieted down at the warmth surrounding him, the voice he is most familiar with combined with the powerful yet protective hand holding him made him slowly open his eyes, revealing the same blue gems he inherited from his mother.

The new parents watched in wonder as they saw their baby's eyes. "He's beautiful, you've done well Asuna." Kalego softly said, smiling in pride at the mother of their child for the strength she demonstrated.

Asuna laughed softly then grunted when she felt the placenta move down her birth canal.

"I got it." Balam told her as he grabbed a pan and caught the placenta before it could hit the ground.

Asuna let out a relieved sigh as she cradled her demon baby before she felt something leak from her breasts. Without ceremony, she pulled the collar of her shirt down and guided her son's mouth to her nipple before he began to suckle.

Balam quickly looked away when she bore her breast while Kalego froze up as she began to nurse the baby.

Asuna smiled sheepishly, "Sorry about that. Probably should have warned you beforehand."

Kalego looked away, a light blush dusting his cheeks, "Yes, well, don't do that in front of other people."

After she was finished breast feeding, Kalego cleaned her up while Balam did the same for Iruma. While Asuna slept in his bed, he set to work on a healing spell. He paid extra attention to her neck where the collar dug into her flesh, leaving behind a nasty scar. He pulled the covers around her, making sure she won't get cold as she recovers from childbirth.

Kalego finally allowed himself to relax into the chair beside the bed as Balam reentered the room with a freshly bundled up Iruma.

"How is she?" Balam asked, gently cradling the small sleeping babe.

"I healed her, she's just sleeping right now." Kalego explained then turned to his ally, "Thank you for being here."

Balam smiled behind his mask, "It was my greatest honor." He then bent over and presented the newborn, "Here you go."

Kalego remembered how Asuna held Iruma and carefully situated his son into the crook of his arm, his deep violet eyes took in Iruma's scrunched up sleeping face. He memorized his features, the soft blue tufts adorning his little head and the slightly pointed ears. He had no horns or tail, which worried him as he hardly looks like a demon.

"He has wings growing out of his back." Balam stated, making Kalego look up in shock then relief. That's one demonic feature that will conceal his humanity.

"Kalego," Balam spoke in a tone that left no room for argument, "tell me honestly, how did this happen."

Kalego frowned as he held his son close but made sure not to crush him. He knew he can't hide the truth anymore. No matter how much it wounded his pride to be caught in that scenario, the result of that horrible time is currently in his arms.

Kalego took a deep breath and sighed, his eyes watched the slumbering Asuna, then whispered in a low voice, "Do you remember that month I was gone?"

Balam's eyes widened.

"Asuna's older brother summoned me for the sole purpose of impregnating Asuna. A young woman who was trapped by the only family she had for eight months." Kalego clenched his teeth, "I was in that prison cell with her for an entire month. She was my only comrade during that time." He lowered his eyes, "Her brother wanted a half-demon child to sell to the highest bidder once Asuna gave birth...and he was willing to make her do it again." The hellhound glared at the floor, wanting so badly to kill him slowly, "He was ready to summon me for another child. But Asuna killed him and summoned me to protect our son."

Balam was silent as he digested everything his fellow teacher and longtime friend just confessed to him. It was overwhelming to say the least. But he felt Kalego and Asuna experienced the worst of it. They were forced to do something they didn't want. Yet despite everything, the love they developed for this small child is the only good thing that came out of that dark time.

"Kalego...I am so sorry." Balam didn't know what else to say or what he can do to help his ally after that kind of trauma.

Kalego sighed quietly before he looked down at the still sleeping child, "It's all over now. Both Asuna and Iruma are here, safe from humans." He stated, his vow to bring them to the Netherworld fulfilled.

"What will you do now?" Balam asked watching Kalego eye his child with a softness that was rare in the strict teacher.

Kalego was silent for a moment, "Protect them the best way I can in this world." He glanced at Asuna's sleeping face, noting how peaceful she looks, "I owe her this much and more. She wanted to free me from her brother no matter what, and she had to kill her own blood to protect her son and me. She has no place in the human world."

Balam could see how Kalego is attached to the human, a woman who he shares a bond through trauma and affection for their son. If what Kalego said is true, then Asuna needs to learn about the Netherworld if she's gonna stay with her son. Given the lengths she went to ensure her son and his father's safety, Balam believes she's up to the challenge.

"Is there any way I can help?" Balam asked, making the hellhound stare at him then smile lightly.

"Well, I hope Asuna agrees, but I'd like you to be Iruma's Godfather." Kalego said, watching the gargoyle's eye widen before he smiled behind his mask.

"I'd love that."

"Also, could you substitute my classes for the next five weeks?" Kalego made his second request, "With the abrupt changes, I must adjust to my new role as a father. Additionally, I'll need to help Asuna adjust to her life in the Netherworld." 'I need to help her survive this place.'

"I can give you all of my picture books if it'll help her." Balam offered, knowing when Kalego commits to something, he'll never budge an inch.

"That is most appreciated."

"What will you tell the Chairdemon?" Balam asked, watching Kalego's face sour at the mention of their superior.

"I'll just tell him I have urgent clan matters to attend to. It's technically not a lie." Kalego added as he glanced at his still sleeping son, unbothered by the world.

"Fair point." Balam sighed then stood up, "I'll be back in a bit, I can get some baby supplies for you."

"Are you sure?" Kalego asked, not sure if it is such a good idea to send his closest ally to retrieve the items. Thankfully it's a weekend, so neither of them needs to be at Babylus.

"You stay here with your family. If Asuna and Iruma wake up, it's you they'll want to see." Balam stated as he left the room to complete his task.

Kalego was left alone with the sleeping human and half-demon.

"Family." Kalego said to himself, the word foreign on his tongue as he turned to Asuna then Iruma. For decades he never believed himself capable of having a family of his own. With his demanding job as a teacher preparing the next generation of demons on how to survive the Netherworld, he felt he wouldn't be able to make time for one. But now he can't turn back, Asuna and Iruma need him.

Staring at the scar around Asuna's neck, he made a silent vow to keep them safe, to heal her from all the torment she suffered at the hands of her brother. He knows he's breaking a multitude of laws, but he'd rather lose his wings than allow anyone to take away his family.

"Asuna, Iruma...I swear, this time I will protect you."

Chapter 2: "I want to learn about the Netherworld."

Summary:

Asuna wakes up and begins her new life in the Netherworld.

Chapter Text

Asuna slowly opened her eyes to an unfamiliar ceiling. It took her a moment to remember what happened before she fell asleep. She slowly sat up, pulling the covers off her body and touched her belly that was no longer swollen. What caught her off guard was the lack of pain within her lower half.

The sound of a baby gurgling made her look up to see Kalego cradling their son as he sat in a chair beside the bed. "You're finally awake." Kalego said as he stared at Asuna.

Everything came back to Asuna like a tidal wave, "How long was I out?"

"Twelve hours. You slept an entire day." Kalego answered as he sat up and carefully gave Iruma to her.

Asuna cradled her son who was barely a day old, his blue eyes met hers, lighting up in recognition as he aimlessly moved his arms around, reaching for something he can't grab. She laughed softly as her index finger caught his very small hand, letting his tiny fingers wrap around hers. Her thumb gently stroked his delicate knuckles as Iruma gurgled up at her.

"You must be hungry by now." Asuna whispered, sensing Iruma's discomfort before she pulled the collar of her nightgown down and began to breastfeed her son.

Kalego wasn't prepared for that as he quickly looked away, blushing lightly at the image planted in his head.

"It's not like you haven't seen me naked before." Asuna stated as Iruma suckled at her teat.

Kalego groaned, clenched his eyes shut as he willed himself to remain, "Yes, I'm aware. But it is still rude to stare."

Asuna smiled softly at Kalego, "A gentleman as always."

Kalego didn't respond, he just sat at the edge of the bed staring at the ground.

"Did Balam go home?" Asuna asked when she noticed the gargoyle's absence.

"Yes, he's making lesson plans to substitute my classes for a month." Kalego explained, "Until then, I'll stay here with you and Iruma."

Asuna stared at Kalego with concern, "Is it alright for you to just leave work like that? Won't your superior be mad?" She asked, remembering what Kalego taught her before about the demon hierarchy and how demons must follow the orders of higher rank.

"I already gave the Chairdemon a call and told him I'll be taking a leave of absence for a clan emergency." Kalego said, remembering how he fought down his anxiety when he informed the most annoying man in existence the reason for his absence.

"Is lying really such a good idea?" Asuna asked, worried for the father of her child.

"It's not a lie." Kalego finally turned to Asuna who finished breastfeeding their son and began to burp the infant.

"But what if he asks? You said he's a higher rank than you. Does he know about humans?" Asuna asked, holding her son close to her.

"It's none of his business what I do outside of work. As for his knowledge, I can wager he knows about their existence." Kalego stated with a frown, worried about what would happen if Sullivan came sniffing around, or worse, he sends that diabolical hellcat after him.

"Will he send me back to the human world?" Asuna asked, her voice tinged with barely suppressed fear.

Iruma, sensing his mother's discomfort, began to make pained sounds.

Asuna gently rocked her son, whispering softly to him, assuring him that he's safe until he calmed down.

"It's not going to happen, I won't let it." Kalego stated, his eyes hardening at the idea of anyone separating Iruma from his mother.

"But-"

Kalego grasped her hand and held it securely, "Asuna, do you trust me?" He asked, locking his violet eyes with blue.

Those same words he spoke to her while they were trapped in that prison cell, and the way he held her hand to offer her strength and comfort. Even though he's a demon, Asuna felt she can trust him as she did the moment they met and now.

Swallowed her saliva, she curled her fingers around his larger hand, "I trust you. But I..." She let out a shuddering breath, "...I don't want you to get in trouble for my sake."

Kalego suppressed a smile, just like before, she is always concerned for him instead of herself. Demons are never like that, they are greedy and selfish by nature. But this trait she demonstrates, somehow it makes her exotic and desirable. A truly unique and rare quality among those living in the Netherworld.

"You needn't worry Asuna, I'll take care of everything." Kalego assured her, using the same gentle tone like before.

Though Asuna still had her worries, she decided to let it go for now. "Okay, just don't take on more than you can handle."

"Oh please, the Chairdemon is more than anyone can handle." Kalego groaned miserably as he thought about his irritating boss.

Asuna laughed softly as she stroked his knuckles with her thumb to comfort him.

The moment was interrupted by the sound of her stomach growling. Very loudly.

Asuna blushed deeply at such an embarrassing sound and felt the desire to crawl into a hole.

Kalego chuckled, "Come on, I'll get you something to eat."

Asuna sat at the dinner table eating the food Kalego prepared, her stomach reveled in joy as she consumed her fill. Beside the table, Iruma laid in his bassinet Kalego found in his old things. After cleaning it up, he placed his son inside and tucked the blanket around him before he fell asleep.

"This is very good." Asuna said as she enjoyed the flavor.

"You never even asked what it is." Kalego stated as he ate his food with the noble etiquette.

"Well, given what I had for over a year, this is an improvement." Asuna said as she slowly ate her food.

Kalego clenched his jaw as he was reminded of her circumstances. He remembered how thin and malnourished she looked when he first saw her. The meager food that bastard gave her were only enough to keep her alive. He can't imagine how she coped with her pregnancy.

"Kalego, what's wrong?" Asuna asked when she caught the discomforted expression.

Kalego sighed through his nose and bowed his head, "I'm sorry." He solemnly said as he closed his eyes.

Asuna blinked, "What are you apologizing for?"

Kalego slowly opened his eyes, but he didn't look at her, "I wasn't there for you during your pregnancy. When the contract broke and I was sent back here, I tried to find a way back to the human world without Demon Border Patrol knowing. But I hit so many walls, and I couldn't get to you until you summoned me." He finally made eye contact with Asuna, "I am so sorry Asuna."

Asuna stared at him in shock and understanding before she leaned forward and grasped his hand, "Hey, none of this is your fault, nor was it mine. You were there for Iruma's birth, that's all that matters." She gave him a soft comforting smile, "Even though you weren't with me all those months, you and Iruma gave me strength I never realized I had. You two gave me a reason to fight, and I'm forever grateful to you for that." She glanced over at their slumbering son with that same fond expression, "I don't know what will happen next, but I'll do my best to raise our son into a fine demon."

The corner of Kalego's mouth quirked up, "You're quite optimistic."

"Is that a bad thing here?" Asuna turned to him with a curious smile.

Kalego was quick to clarify, "No, it's just another form of ambition. It's highly cultivated at school, a driving force for each student who attend Babylus."

"If it motivates them to survive school, then they'll need a lot of it." Asuna said with a smile that made her face glow in the evening light.

Kalego's voice caught in his throat at the sight of Asuna's smile. 'Beautiful.' Then he realized her hand still held his. Quickly, her pulled his hand back then cleared his throat, "Yes, well...we also need to discuss our...current situation."

Asuna sat straight as she listened to Kalego.

"As you already know, humans are considered a myth in the Netherworld, a fairytale for demons." Kalego began, watching Asuna nod in confirmation and understanding. "Humans are also considered a delicacy to demons, not just for taste, but for reaching higher rank. Should a demon, any demon, devour you, they will gain more power, or worse, return to origin. Since you're living here in the Netherworld, it is of the utmost importance that you never reveal your humanity or that of Iruma's." He warned her strongly, knowing since the moment he decided to bring her here that secrecy is her only chance for survival.

"Thankfully Iruma has enough demon traits that won't be questioned." Asuna said as she glanced at their son who remains blissfully unaware of the situation surrounding them.

"There is also your lack of knowledge of this world." Kalego added, "You never grew up here, and every demon has the most basic knowledge of the Netherworld's history. The second reason for me leaving work is help you learn about the Netherworld." He paused, "I know this is all overwhelming, but this world is dangerous, and you need to learn how to survive it if you're going to live here."

Asuna was silent before she nodded, her face filled with determination, "I understand. I have known since the conception that I want to live with Iruma no matter what, even if it means living in the Netherworld." She sat straight and confidant, "Professor Kalego, I may not be one of your students, but I am ready to learn about this world. Teach me everything. I'll even study through the night if I must." She strongly said, wanting to prove herself to the demon who gave her strength to keep living.

Kalego smirked, the mother of his child has enough pride and ambition to show she's more than a mere human. He knew she's intelligent from their time together. When they were not trying to conceive, they'd talk about anything to help them feel normal. What stood out to Kalego was her thirst for knowledge and unending curiosity. The way her eyes lit up when he told her about the Netherworld and the kinds of magic and bloodline abilities they have. When he showed her Cerberus, she voiced her thoughts saying the beautiful creature is an extension of his soul; fierce, full of spark and light.

"We'll officially begin lessons in the morning. You're not fully recovered and will need more rest if you want to survive my lessons." Kalego said before he resumed eating.

"I can take it." Asuna said, undeterred as she accepted the challenge.

Kalego smiled inwardly, he's actually looking forward to these lessons with her.

In the library of Naberius Kalego's house, the family of three sat around a table where the two adults read and took notes. Asuna wanted to start from the beginning of how the Netherworld began, so Kalego began teaching her its history, King Derkila's reign before his disappearance, the 13 Crowns, the laws of the Netherworld and so much more. Asuna sat there cradling her son as she read through the material with determination, pausing every now and then to fawn over her baby. They've been at this for nearly three hours, and they still weren't finished with the first book.

In the background, the record played classical music which gave them a calm atmosphere. Asuna held a look of intense concentration as she read the book, thankfully with a translator spell, she is able to understand its contents. After a year of being locked up, she is just happy holding a book in her hand once again. Reading has always been her favorite past time when she's not working, it allowed her mind to drift and keep intrusive thoughts from consuming her mind.

Kalego watched her with an impressed smile, for the last three hours, the hellhound taught her about the Netherworld and Asuna, ever the eager scholar, had a look of hunger in her eyes for knowledge. The second they entered the library, Asuna's eyes literally sparkled at the thousands of books on the shelves. Like a kid in a candy shop before she pulled random books from the shelves and read each title. Every now and then Asuna would ask an intellectual question about the subject within the book and Kalego would go into the details, adding his own opinions as Asuna and Iruma listened. For once, Kalego actually enjoyed teaching. Maybe it was because the student in front of him is a mature grown woman instead of a whining teenage brat.

Asuna paused in reading when Iruma began to fuss. "What's wrong Iruma?"

A familiar stench filled the air.

"Oh, I see."

Kalego stood up and held his hands out, "I got him."

Asuna transferred their son into his arms, "Are you sure? This one's a number two."

"Your point?" Kalego asked as he cradled their son.

"Demons have a higher sense of smell, right? This will destroy your nose." Asuna stated with a look of certainty and warning.

"You're being dramatic, I'll be fine." Kalego said as he left to change Iruma's diaper.

"You've done this before?" Asuna asked as she watched Kalego walk away.

"No, but I know the process." Kalego said as he left the library.

Asuna waited and quietly said to herself, "5...4...3...2...1."

"GYUGGHHH!"

Asuna nodded, "Yep." Then she resumed reading, feeling a little smug.

For the next two weeks, the new parents and roommates learned their new routine and the challenges of parenthood. Iruma, though normally a quiet baby, still cries for his parents whenever he needs food, a diaper change, or just wants to be held. All three sleep in separate bedrooms, Kalego in his room, Asuna in the guest, and Iruma in the nursery. Asuna, who has handled babies before is always up at the first cry. Given her normally sleepless nights, she never complains as she carries her son around the nursery to soothe his cries. Some nights, Asuna will stay in the nursery throughout the night and read one of the many books she snatched from the library to brush up on her studies. At some point during those nights, she falls asleep in the chair beside the crib with book in her lap, then wake up in her room.

Kalego, while mostly spared from sleepless nights, attended to Iruma in the morning and early afternoon to let Asuna catch up on more sleep. By the first week, he is able to tolerate diaper stenches. As Kalego fed Iruma a fresh bottle of Asuna's breast milk, he looked around the kitchen and noted how everything felt brighter in the normally gloomy manor. It has a gentle liveliness and brings out a sense of comfort he never experienced. He spent most of his time at Babylus and the Teacher's Dorms that he hardly ever comes to his own house. Yet right now, with his son nestled in his arms, he felt a sense of peace he never realized he could get. More than that, he doesn't feel lonely in this empty house.

Asuna entered the living room, stretching her arms over her head to work out the kinks, "Good morning."

"Sleep well?" Kalego asked as he gently burped Iruma the way she showed him.

Asuna smiled, "Yep. Thanks for carrying me to bed again."

"One of these days, you're going to wake up with a crooked neck if you keep sleeping like that." Kalego warned her as Asuna gathered pans from the cupboard and moved them to the stove.

"Sorry about that. Bad habit. Brightside, I get more reading time while tending to Iruma." Asuna said as she got started on making breakfast with ease.

Kalego watched as Asuna moved around the kitchen with grace. Dressed in a simple sweater that covered her neck and jeans with her long blue hair tied back in a ponytail, she looked so stunning with her natural beauty. Kalego has seen many succubi and their alluring charm, yet none of them ever enticed him. Showing too much skin and being too assertive never appealed to him. Asuna, a modest human, preferred to be calm, wear simple comfortable clothes and never demanded attention yet is somehow the center of every room she's in.

"Um, Kalego?"

Asuna's voice pulled him out of his thoughts before he quickly shook his head.

"Yes?"

Thankfully Asuna's back was too him as she scanned the fridge with a critical look. "I'm afraid we're running low on eggs and other breakfast ingredients."

Kalego stood up, still holding Iruma and glanced inside before cursing himself. Living alone, he doesn't require much food to stock the fridge. But with the contents being half-empty and with the house having three mouths to feed, he miscalculated.

"I see, I'll have to go to the store and buy some." Kalego said as Asuna closed the fridge.

"Yeah, um, I think we need more than just groceries actually." Asuna turned to Kalego, "We're gonna need more diapers. A stockpile." She added as she glanced at Iruma how gurgled at his mom.

"I see, anything else?" Kalego asked as he went through the mental list of things they need.

Asuna looked down and held the hem of her sleeves, "Well, um," She hesitated nervously.

Kalego stared at her, "What is it? Come on, I won't be mad."

Asuna spoke in a meek voice, "Can I... go shopping with you?"

Kalego was at a loss for words at her request.

"I know you don't want me to go outside, and I'm grateful for everything you've done to make us comfortable. But I..." Asuna swallowed, "...I want to see the Netherworld for myself, even a small part of it beyond these walls. Please?" She asked, gripping the hem of sleeves tightly, waiting for him to reject her request.

Kalego berated himself for another folly he didn't anticipate. Asuna has been locked inside for over a year, and he's kept her within his house for two weeks. Even though he showed her the garden, it is still within the borders of his home. While this house is the safest place for Asuna, he is also keeping her imprisoned and isolated from the world. As dangerous as the Netherworld is, Kalego realizes he can't keep her from it forever.

Sighing through his nose, he spoke, "Very well then."

Asuna looked up with hopeful eyes, "Really?"

Kalego nodded as he glanced down at their son, "Iruma will need to see this world as well, as it is also his home." He then turned to Asuna, "And...we need to get you fitted into some new clothes."

Asuna glanced down at her clothing and touched the collar encasing her neck, "Oh right, I didn't think about that."

Kalego nodded, "This was bound to come up eventually, so we might as well kill a few birds with one stone while we're out."

Asuna gave him a relieved smile, "Thank you Kalego."

Kalego knows he's taking a risk bringing his family outside these walls, but he can't let Asuna wither away like she almost did in the human world. She needs to experience it herself, the good and everything else.

With that thought in mind, he decided to set some ground rules, "Remember, while we're out, you and Iruma are never to leave my side."

"Right."

"If someone stares at you for too long, you tell me and we leave the area immediately."

"Right."

"And one more thing, we need to do something about your smell." Kalego said, his nose twitching at the human scent she's giving off.

Asuna took a piece of her sweater and sniffed it, "Do I really smell that bad?"

"No, you smell delicious, which is just as bad, if not worse." Kalego stated, thankfully he had enough exposure to Asuna to not devour her on the spot.

Asuna had a look of fear at the implication, "Oh, I see."

"Luckily Balam dropped off some powerful perfume to mask your human scent. It won't completely get rid of it, but it will conceal you just enough." Kalego informed her, reminding himself to buy Balam a gift to thank him.

"Then we should keep a bottle on hand just in case."

Kalego nodded in agreement, "Glad we're on the same page. We'll leave after breakfast."

Asuna nodded, "Right." Then she resumed her task in making breakfast for two.

Kalego sighed quietly as he glanced down at Iruma who was observing his parents the entire time. The hellhound sat at the table and immediately began to write down a list of items they'll need to buy on this shopping trip. All the while praying to the devil for no incidents while they're out.

Chapter 3: "Let's go shopping."

Summary:

A family shopping trip.

Chapter Text

"We're ready." Asuna announced after she secured Iruma in the baby carriage. It was dark purple and had a gothic feel that contrasted with Iruma's bright personality and clothing.

Asuna wore a cream-colored coat that reached her knees and her blue hair tied back in a ponytail.

Kalego wore his own dark casual clothes as he threw on his dark purplish-black coat.

The hellhound sniffed her and nodded, "Alright."

Though Asuna was a little embarrassed by the scent check, she quickly got over it as she pushed the carriage through the door and walked beside Kalego towards where the shopping district in town was located. Even though it would be quicker by flight, Kalego preferred to be on the ground with Asuna and Iruma at the moment for safety reasons.

They entered the town, trying to be calm and casual as they passed by other demons. Asuna gripped the handle of the baby carriage when they got close to Iruma, cooing at him and complimenting the parents for having such a beautiful newborn. With fear-laced politeness, Asuna would thank them for their words. She was aware that all demons in the Netherworld come in all shapes and sizes, but she was never as mentally prepared as she thought.

"So, where shall we go to first?" Asuna asked, trying to distract herself as she pushed the carriage.

"The clothing store." Kalego informed her as he guided them to the local shop he frequently visits.

Upon entering the store, the family of three went to the women's clothing where Asuna gathered five sets of pants, long skirts, blouses, and sweaters. Each of them ranged from blue, gray and white to fit her coloring. They even stopped by the baby clothes where Asuna sparkled upon seeing the adorable outfits she wants to dress Iruma in. As she placed the clothing items in her arms, her blue eyes caught sight of the rack with silk neck scarves. She picked up a bright blue one with yellow patterns before standing in front of one of the many mirrors in the store and tied it around her neck. It's beautiful and stylish, and the best part, it can conceal the nasty scar around her neck.

"Would you like to buy it?" Kalego asked, staying beside the baby carriage where Iruma slept peacefully.

Asuna touched the edge of the scarf and turned to Kalego, "It's very beautiful. I..." She brought her voice down to a whisper, "...I need something to cover my scar."

Kalego nodded, "Get as many as you want."

Asuna's eyes widened, "Are you sure?"

"It's fine, we can't rely on turtlenecks when summer comes around." Kalego stated since they were still in the fall season.

Asuna couldn't argue with him there before she carried five sets of beautiful silk scarves with different shades of blue and a variety of patterns.

"You really love blue." Kalego noted as they stood in the checkout line.

"Yeah, I tried to wear other colors, but they just can't match with my unless it has something blue attached to it." Asuna said, remembering how she is unable to wear warm colors without clashing with her blue hair and eyes.

"Hm, you're right, other colors just don't suit you. Perhaps it's because the color represents calm and relaxation. I believe it has more to do with personality." Kalego stated as he glanced at the still sleeping Iruma, "I take it Iruma won't be any different."

Asuna laughed softly as their turn came up, "That's one way of putting it."

With their bags of clothes in their hands, Kalego quickly did a spell that transported their purchased items to their home.

"I gotta learn how to do that." Asuna said with an envious expression after he made their stuff vanish.

"Perhaps another time." Kalego responded, though honestly, he's worried Asuna is unable to use magic considering her humanity and lack of mana.

"So, baby store next?" Asuna asked as she pushed the carriage beside Kalego.

"Yes, it should be around here." Kalego said as he tried to navigate them towards the shop dedicated to new parents.

They entered the cute little baby store where staff members looked up and squeaked upon seeing the scary demon. "Hello, could you direct us to the diapers?" Kalego requested while Asuna smiled politely at the frightened employees.

"Oh, they're right this way." One of them said before directing them to the aisle they need.

As Kalego picked up the brand he recognized, Asuna browsed the shelf opposite of to the diapers.

"This is cute." Asuna said as she picked the item off the shelf, it was a light projection that makes the moon and stars rotate across the walls and ceiling. "Kalego, is it okay if we get this for Iruma?" She asked as she presented him the little box.

Kalego scrutinized it for a moment then shrugged, "If it'll keep him entertained at night, then I don't see the harm."

Asuna giggled softly in excitement before her attention went to their son who is now awake and speaking incoherent babbles at his parents. Asuna touched his soft tufts of hair and said, "You're going to see the stars tonight Iruma." The baby babbled in excitement, whatever it is, if his mother is happy then so is he.

Kalego watched their interaction with an unnoticeable smile, feeling relaxed as he picked out three packages of diapers.

The employees who witnessed this 'awed' at them. Many of them could not help but think what a cute family they are despite Kalego's intimidating appearance.

The small family purchased their items at the register. Asuna felt the hair on her neck stand up before she turned and looked around the store. She swore someone was watching them. Though it didn't feel threatening or dangerous, it was still disconcerting to be stared at for so long.

"What's wrong?" Kalego asked when he noticed Asuna's change in demeanor.

Asuna frowned and turned back to Kalego, "I must be imagining things."

Kalego hummed as he took their bags and left the store with Asuna pushing Iruma's carriage.

A few moments later, a demon with black hair and two horns at the top of his head stepped outside, watching Kalego and Asuna walk away. He stared, mouth gaping in utter shock at what he just saw in the baby store. The second he heard Kalego's name and his unmistakable voice, the Torture Arts teacher peeked through the shelf and saw the scariest teacher at Babylus with a beautiful woman. What's more, they had a baby with them. Kalego...with a woman...and a baby. That sentence is impossible! He clamped his hand over his mouth to keep from screaming in shock as he continued to observe them. It was just so surreal. He had to pinch himself several times to check if he's dreaming. He's not. This is all too real. With a shake of his head, he flew off towards the teachers' dorms with his cousin's baby gift in his hand.

Kalego sighed in relief when they finally made it back to the house. After setting the bags of groceries on the counter, the two parents began to put the food away.

"I had fun today." Asuna said as she set Iruma in his bassinet, setting him down for his nap as he snoozed.

"I'm just glad it's over." Kalego said as he put the milk in the fridge.

"Sorry if we went a little over the budget." Asuna sheepishly said to him.

"It wasn't the money I was concerned with." Kalego stated, his face sour as he recalled their time in the grocery store. Many demons, male ones to be exact, kept staring at Asuna with lust and desire. She didn't seem aware as she was holding Iruma who wanted his mother's cuddles. With Asuna cradling her baby, she gave off an image of a fertility goddess, her natural beauty enhanced by her maternal glow.

Kalego had to death glare the piss out of those blushing demons to get them to back off. He was on the verge of summoning Cerberus if not for Asuna's presence. He practically ran around the store finding their items before they left the store.

Asuna laughed softly, "Even though it wasn't what I expected, I can't say I hate it." She said with a melancholy smile, "It's all so similar to what I had before. The people were no different from the ones I grew up around. Peaceful, simple and kind."

Kalego frowned as he prepared tea for them, "You used to live with your mother, correct?"

Asuna smiled sadly, "Yes."

"How old were you when..." Kalego couldn't finish that sentence.

"I was nine when my mom died. Grandpa took me in. The irony is he exorcised demons for a living." Asuna said with a soft smile, remembering the wise and gentle old man who cared for her. Her smile waned, "Then one day, years later, this man comes around acting all friendly, claiming to be my father. He knew everything about my mother, shared pictures of her. He wanted me to live with him. But I didn't want to go. So, he stole me away from the only real family I knew. Then I met my brother. He was technically my half-brother. Same good-for-nothing dad. Unfortunately."

Kalego clenched his hands tightly, he knew what happened after, her father and brother kept her like a slave, abusing her whenever she disobeyed them, denying her freedom and education.

"Your grandfather?"

Asuna swallowed, "When my father died, I finally escaped. But my grandfather was already dead before I could get back to him. He left behind his inheritance to me so I can start over, far away from my father and brother. I really did think I could escape, have a life of my own. I only wanted to help people, that's why I went into medicine." She shook her head, "I was such a fool."

Kalego set the cups down and poured the tea. "The only one who was foolish is the man who dared call himself your brother. He cemented his own demise the second he summoned me." He stated as he sat at the table with her.

"You're not wrong." Asuna stirred her tea with a distant look, "You know what the worst thing is? I don't feel bad about killing him. I'm not happy, but I don't feel guilty. Does that make me worse than him?"

Kalego sighed, "What your brother and father did to you was deplorable, even demons don't do that to their offspring. As far as anyone's concerned, they weren't your family to begin with. In the Netherworld, we always have to make hard decisions to survive. What you did was no different." He stated, hoping she can at least take some comfort in that knowledge. "Asuna, even though we can't go back to the way things were before, I'll do everything within my power to help you feel at home in this world."

Asuna stared at him for a long time then smiled, "Thank you Kalego." Despite his gruff and strict demeanor, he knew how to comfort her in his own way.

"Just don't let those worthless humans invade your thoughts. They are long gone. They can't hurt you or our son anymore." Kalego added, relieved when he saw her smile return.

"You're right." Asuna conceded, "Also, thanks for letting me and Iruma come along today."

"I realize being cooped up inside 24/7 isn't actually good for your health. Fresh air will do us some good when we need it." Kalego admitted to himself as he took a sip of his tea.

"Perhaps we can take a walk around that park some time?" Asuna suggested, remembering that trail where many demons walked along the path enjoying the nature around them.

"I don't see why not?" Kalego responded, not having any problems with that plan.

Asuna smiled in excitement at the thought of spending time outside with Kalego and Iruma. Things truly felt peaceful in the Netherworld.

"WHAT?!"

The teachers of Babylus exclaimed as they surrounded the Torture Arts Teacher, Marbas March who shifted in his seat inside the cafeteria of the Dorm.

"I'm telling you the truth, I swear." Marbas said as they watched him in disbelief.

"Are you sure it was Kalego you saw?" Dantalion Dali slowly asked, eyes wide as he processed this information.

"Yes."

"At a baby store?" Orias Oswell added, his hood fell back.

"Yes."

"With a beautiful woman?" Murmur Tsumuru added, his mouth gaping open.

"Yes."

"And an infant?" Ipos Ichou was the last to ask.

"Yes."

Silence fell over the cafeteria as the teachers processed this new bit of information. The scariest and strictest teacher at Babylus apparently has a family of his own.

"How-How are we only hearing this now? I didn't even know he was married." Morax Momonoki stated, blushing at the thought of her former mentor and current crush having a wife and child.

"Well, um, the baby was pretty new, maybe about a week old. He was very small in that baby carriage." Marbas explained, remembering that little infant who looked too happy within that gloomy stroller.

"Did the kid look anything like Kalego?" Dali asked as he tried to picture a scowling baby with narrow eyes glaring at them. Honestly, it's frightening and cute.

"Uh, no, not really. In fact, he didn't look anything like Kalego. He mainly takes after his mom." Marbas scratched his head.

"What did she look like, yis?" Suzy Stolas asked the question haunting every teacher in the cafeteria.

Marbas crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes as he remembered the woman who accompanied Kalego, "Well, she has long blue hair and matching round eyes, pale yet glowing skin, she's a bit on the short side up to Kalego's shoulders, she has a slim figure." He swallowed, "She also has this very warm and comforting voice when she talks to the baby, and her smile is very soothing and peaceful." He opened his eyes to see everyone stare at him in shock at the description, "Her son is basically her very small copy."

"The woman you just described sounds too good to be true. And one who is with Kalego of all people?" Orias said with a hint of doubt. "There's no way that's possible, it's like a complete opposite to the guy."

"Well, opposites do attract." Raim stated, resting her elbows on the table with her chin in her hands.

"Perhaps she's just a friend who's adjusting to motherhood and Kalego happened to be around to help her. If the baby looks more like his mother, then Kalego may not be the father at all." Blushenko Buer said, being the most logical demon in the room.

"I don't think so, from the conversation I heard, they're living together." Marbas shook his head as he remembered details of that conversation.

"It doesn't prove they're in a relationship though." Tsumuru stated, "I'm with Blushenko, kid can't be Kalego's."

"But what if it is, why keep it a secret?" Momonoki asked the question everyone had.

"Perhaps they just found each other again around the time the baby was born." Orias theorized as he mused that scenario.

"I think Kalego was keeping her imprisoned in his house all those months so no one would know what a beautiful wife he has." Dali wagered then smirked, "From how Marbas described her, I wouldn't want anyone looking at her either."

"Are they even married? Yis." Stolas wondered as she glanced at Marbas.

Marbas shrugged, "I didn't see a ring on either of them, but they do seem rather comfortable with each other. I even saw Kalego touch the small of her back at some point."

"So this 'clan emergency', was just an excuse for Kalego to spend time with his new family." Ipos stated with a contemplative expression.

"His secret family to be more precise." Dali grinned, "It's actually kind of cute."

"Well, it's not a secret anymore if we tattle to the Chairdemon." Orias exclaimed with an excited grin.

"We shouldn't, Kalego will be very angry and will want to know who snitched on him." Momonoki protested as she glanced at Marbas.

"I really should have kept my mouth shut." Marbas whimpered when he realized the trail will lead back to him the second Kalego finds out who ratted him out.

"She's right, for the sake of our own survival, we say nothing." Blushenko said as he gave Dali a stern glare.

"Aww, but this is the most interesting thing to happen to Kalego since...never." Dali whined at the lost opportunity to mess with his former junior.

As the teachers discussed the latest news surrounding Kalego, none of them noticed the presence outside the cafeteria listening to every word being said about their favorite underling. With a twitch of their cat ears and a swish of their tail, they walked away to inform the Chairdemon.

Chapter 4: "Iruma, meet your grandpa."

Summary:

Two uninvited guests arrive at the Naberius house.

Chapter Text

The Chairdemon of Babylus, Sullivan, sat behind his desk at his manor, his glasses glinted under the light as Opera stood before him to report.

"So, our little Kalego lied to us." Sullivan said in an eerie calm voice.

"Yes, and apparently the infant had just been born not too long ago when he requested leave of absence." Opera added as they thought of their precious underling. It would have been easier if the hellhound simply told them about the newborn and his newly acquired wife instead of straight up lying. But then again, no one would ever believe the Guard Dog of Babylus would have a family. Plus, if knowledge of this gets out, it could damage his carefully constructed reputation.

"Hm, this is an interesting turn of events." Sullivan said as a slow smile crawled onto his face. He has known Kalego since the lad was student, his dedication to his role as the school's protector is what makes him a suitable guardian. For a Guard Dog to have a weakness he wants to keep secret, the principal felt it is his duty to help protect those weaknesses.

"What shall we do sir?" Opera asked when they caught that familiar glint within their boss' eyes.

"What else? We're going to help our favorite Kalego. Also," Sullivan chuckled excitedly, "I want to meet my new grandson."

Kalego and Asuna prepared lunch early afternoon that weekend. Their routine went off without a hitch and they invited Balam over for lunch to catch up on the latest happenings.

Asuna had Iruma cradled in her arms when he wanted attention, one she happily obliged. "You're going to see your Uncle Balam today Iruma. He's the one who helped deliver you. Hope you're excited." She said to him with her ever-beautiful smile as Iruma babbled happily.

Asuna turned to Kalego who set the plates on the table, "I'm glad he finally has free time after the additional classes he's substituting. I haven't had the chance to properly thank him."

Kalego never paused in his task, "He calls every few days to check in, he asks so many questions regarding Iruma's development and whether he should bring over more picture books."

Asuna breathed out a small laugh, "It's only been a few weeks and he's already taken to his role as a Godfather."

"I should have discussed that with you beforehand."

"Nonsense, you trust him and you have good judgement." Asuna gave him that same kind and understanding look, "Besides, after everything he's done, it's only right he becomes Iruma's Godfather."

Kalego hummed and nodded, they are always on the same page.

A knock on the front door drew their attention.

"Huh, Balam's early." Asuna stated before she sniffed the air as Iruma grunted in her arms, "And you have the strangest timing." She looked up at Kalego, "I'll take care of little stinky." She said as she left the room to change their son.

"I got the door." Kalego responded as he left the dining room to answer the knock.

Kalego opened the large door expecting to see his closest ally, but he felt his soul leave his body when he stood face-to-face with two of his least favorite demons in the Netherworld.

"Hello Kalego." Sullivan greeted with his usual smile while Opera stood beside them with their expressionless face. But Kalego can see the mischievous sparkle in their eyes.

Kalego's eyes widened as his hackles raised, "Why are you here?" He growled, baring his teeth as he glared at them.

"We wanted to check in on you. It's been too long since we last talked." Sullivan stated, looking rather excited. Which to Kalego, is never a good sign.

"Not long enough." Kalego said through gritted teeth as fear began to rise in his belly. Asuna is still upstairs changing Iruma, as long as she stays there, these two will not know about her and Iruma. He just needs them to leave before Asuna comes down.

"Now Kalego. That is no way to speak to your favorite upperclassman." Opera said with a teasing tone, "It looks as though your 'clan emergency' is over. Won't you let us inside?"

"No." Kalego responded, growling deep in his throat as he glared angrily at them. "Don't you even dare come in this house."

Sullivan and Opera were surprised by the sudden threatening tone coming from the hellhound. Normally Opera would tease the younger man on his manners, but the look of fear hidden deep within his anger-filled eyes stopped them.

"Kal-"

"I want you to leave my property. Right. Now." Kalego slowly said to them, as sparks appeared on his body, daring them to take one step closer towards his door.

Just as Sullivan was about to raise his hands and speak softly to the hellhound, two scents that were unlike any demon he has ever encountered hit him in the face. The taller demon looked over Kalego's shoulder and saw a young woman at the top of the stairs cradling an infant swaddled in their blanket. She wore a white V-neck long-sleeved blouse, a flowing light-blue skirt that reached her ankles, an aqua colored belt around her waist and a matching silk scarf wrapped snug around her neck with one end draped over her front and the other over her shoulder. Her long blue hair was tied back in a half-ponytail and her shocking blue eyes stared at them with slight fear and apprehension.

'That scent...' Only one species carries that fragrance as Sullivan quickly figured out the woman's origins.

Kalego turned around and caught Asuna's eyes. She was frozen on the spot when she saw two demons she never met before. "Asuna, I forgot something in the library. Can you get it?" Kalego said as he masked his own trepidation as he blinked his eyes three times.

Asuna knew what Kalego wants her to do, "Of course." She swiftly turned around, carrying her child as she quickly retreated into the library and locked the door.

When Kalego heard the click, he turned to the shocked guests, "Go away now." He spoke in a warning tone as he gripped the door handle tightly.

Sullivan said in a serious tone he never heard before, "Kalego...you have a human in your house."

With that one single word, Kalego's reason and control snapped, along with the door he flung at their faces.

Both Sullivan and Opera dodged the door that now splintered into pieces onto the ground behind them. Kalego marched out of his house with a look of fury as more lighting crackled off his body.

Opera has seen Kalego angry before, they are normally the main cause of it. But this kind of rage, it's not the usual annoyance, it's someone who feels their brood is being threatened.

"Kalego, calm down, we're not here to hurt them." Opera said in a placating tone as they raised their hands to calm the hellhound down.

Kalego summoned Cerberus, his face set in a glare as he continued to stalk towards them with the intent to kill. He's not sure if he'll succeed, but he can't let these two take away his treasures.

"I don't believe you." Kalego stated as he raised his hand and sicced his bloodline magic onto the hellcat.

Opera could not deflect in time as they were soon pinned beneath the large heavy claws of Cerberus.

"You will not touch either of them!" Kalego growled as he crushed his upperclassman.

Opera narrowed their eyes and summoned their immense strength and pushed the large claw off of them before they shot towards one of the three heads and brutally kicked under the jaw.

Kalego gritted his teeth before charging at Opera himself, they glared at each other as they both drew their arms back, claws ready to rip their opponent's throat out. But before either of them could make contact, Sullivan appeared just in time to grab their arms in powerful grips, canceling out Kalego's magic and Opera's strength.

"That is quite enough you two." Sullivan said in a strict tone that was very rare.

Sullivan released them as Kalego stumbled back, clutching his arm that was held by the Chairdemon.

The oldest demon turned to Kalego and held his hands up as a show of peace, "Kalego, I understand why you kept this a secret, and believe me when I say that we want to help you." He gently said to the teacher as though the hellhound was his own son.

Kalego growled through his teeth in response.

"He's telling the truth Kalego."

Everyone turned and saw Balam descending from the sky with a book bag in his arm.

"Shichiro." Kalego said when his ally landed beside him.

Balam placed a large yet gentle hand on the hellhound's shoulder, "He's telling the truth." He repeated his words, waiting for Kalego to calm down.

Knowing Balam's Buzzer can detect the dishonesty within another, Kalego willed himself to put down his guard. He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled before he relaxed his stance and brushed the dust off his clothes.

Sullivan sighed in relief as Opera lowered his arms. "Now then, shall we move this discussion inside?"

In the common room, Kalego and Balam sat together on one couch while Sullivan and Opera sat on the other across from them.

"Is it true, the woman living with you, she's human?" Sullivan asked, though he only wants confirmation from the demon himself.

"Yes, she is." Kalego confirmed, folding his hands in his lap.

"The baby she was holding, it's yours?" Sullivan asked, watching Kalego's eyes lower as he stared at the coffee table.

"That's right. His name is Iruma. He's my son."

Opera's ears lowered when they caught how heavy his voice sounded. No matter how much they messed with their underling, Opera genuinely cares about Kalego, considering him one of their precious people.

"But that can't possible. Half-human and half-demon?" Opera directed their question to Sullivan who nodded, his arms crossed over his chest.

"This is completely unheard of, yet the smell that came off of the lad...even at the distance I could tell his human/demon blood were fresh beneath his skin." Sullivan said with a contemplative look.

Kalego was silent as he watched them digest this discovery.

Sullivan looked up at Kalego, "How did this happen?"

Kalego clenched his fists, digging his nails into his palm.

Balam placed a hand on his shoulder, giving him emotional support as Kalego fell back into the cruel memories.

"Do you recall the month I went missing?"

...

By the end of his explanation, Sullivan and Opera could only stare at Kalego in shock, worry and pain.

"Oh, Kalego..." Sullivan said, his voice low as he imagined the fear Kalego and Asuna experienced together at the hands of her older brother. "...I am so sorry." He said, feeling like he failed as a principal in protecting one of his students and teachers.

Kalego nodded, acknowledging his apology even though it was unneeded.

"Asuna, how has she adjusted?" Opera asked, their ears still low in sadness for their underling and his mate.

"She's taken to the Netherworld quite well actually." Kalego said with a slight smile, "And she's a very studious young woman. I'm teaching her everything I can before I return to work."

"What about you? Are you managing fatherhood as well?" Sullivan asked, sensing the first few days were not easy on the hellhound.

"It was trying at first, but thankfully Asuna has plenty of experience with babies and has taught me the ropes." Kalego said, remembering how tired he was with Iruma crying and waking him up every few hours. But thanks to Asuna and three pots of coffee, he is able to adapt to his role as a father.

Opera turned to Balam, "You knew from the beginning."

Balam nodded at their statement, "Yes. Kalego called me and I helped deliver the baby. I am also Iruma's Godfather." He said as he smiled proudly behind his mask.

Sullivan smiled, "It looks like you're doing splendidly. Though you lied to everyone, I understand your reason behind it. You were only protecting your family."

Kalego nodded, "I apologize for that. I admit that I did overreact earlier. When you said 'human'-"

"You went on instinct and sought to keep them safe from unwanted intruders. I get it." Sullivan said with an understanding tone, not even mad at the man who has taken to his new role as a parent and partner.

Kalego was silent for a moment before he went on to the next order of business. "Why did you come here?"

Opera's ears went up, "One of the teachers saw you with Asuna and Iruma and told the others. I overheard them talking then I informed Lord Sullivan." They finished as their tail swished behind them.

Kalego frowned deeply as he silently cursed his luck. Whoever snitched shall pay.

"When I learned about this, I knew I had to talk to you personally." Sullivan began, "You never keep secrets unless you had a very good reason. And you do." He smiled, "Which is why I want to help you protect your family."

Kalego blinked twice then three times, "Oh, and why exactly?"

Sullivan's glasses glinted in the light, "One, you are the Guard Dog of Babylus, for generations the Naberius Clan has protected the school and its students. It is only right that I keep the Guard Dog's family safe. My second reason," He whipped out a baseball cap with the words '#1 Grandpa' on the front as he transformed into his happy egg form, "I want to spend time with my new grandson!"

Kalego felt like a boulder slammed into him upon hearing the Chairdemon say that. The first reason was sound and noble, and it made Kalego respect the demon. But the second?

"Hold on! What do you mean 'grandson?!'" Kalego exclaimed as he glared at Sullivan who was permeating the air with his flowery aura. 'My home has been infected!'

"I'm saying I want Iruma to be my grandson." Sullivan then began to pout, "Belial and Levy keep bragging about their grandchildren, it makes me jealous, and I just want one who I can spoil!"

"That is hardly a reason!" Kalego yelled as tick marks appeared on his head. "I appreciate your help in keeping Asuna's secret, but-"

"It's not a bad idea actually." Balam cut his ally off, making the hellhound turn to him with a look of betrayal while Sullivan gave the gargoyle a thumbs up. "Think about it Kalego, this will go a long way and it can provide Asuna and Iruma a backer and more protection." Balam paused as Kalego registered what he's telling him, "Their safety is paramount."

Kalego was silent as he realized that what Balam says makes sense. Much as he hates to admit it, but Sullivan is powerful despite his random personality. When the occasion called for it, Sullivan will take up arms against those who threaten his territory.

Everyone watched as Kalego contemplated Sullivan's offer before the hellhound finally spoke, "I need to discuss this with Asuna."

Asuna sat on the couch cradling Iruma close to her. She did not know how long she sat there, anxiously waiting and listening for the demons to take Iruma from her arms and drag her back to the human world. She prayed to every deity in the Netherworld and the human world to spare her from that cruel fate, to let her stay with Iruma and Kalego.

Iruma squirmed as he sensed his mother's unease, the way her heartbeat erratically against his head felt uncomfortable and he wanted to soothe her.

Asuna bounced her son lightly, gently shushing him, "Shh, it's okay, mommy's right here." She repeated to her son, humming softly until he quieted down.

A knock on the door made her look up. "Asuna, it's me." Kalego's voice came from the other side.

Asuna quickly stood up and unlocked the door before Kalego entered the library. Asuna closed the door behind him as Kalego turned to her.

"Those demons?" Asuna enquired, holding her son close.

"That's the Chairdemon Sullivan, and his butler/assistant Opera." Kalego informed her as Asuna remembered the names of two people who irritate Kalego, Opera especially.

"Why are they here?" Asuna asked worriedly as she stared up at Kalego.

Kalego sighed, "One of the teachers at Babylus saw us during our shopping trip." Asuna gasped quietly as he continued, "Opera found out through them and told the Chairdemon." He took a deep breath then added, "They also know that you're human."

Asuna's eyes widened slowly before bowed her head, "How long...until I have to leave?" She asked as she struggled not to cry, her worst fear is coming true, and she only had two weeks with her baby and Kalego.

Hands cupped her elbows, making her look up through shimmering blue eyes and saw Kalego's violet eyes soften. "None. Because you're not leaving."

Asuna's stared at him in disbelief, "I'm not?"

Kalego shook his head as he gently held her with Iruma nestled between them, "You're not."

Asuna let out a shaky breath as her hand covered her mouth, "Oh God." She whispered as she wept, crying in relief.

Kalego held her close, being mindful of the baby between them.

Asuna pulled away, but her tears didn't seize, "But...why?"

Kalego wiped her tears away, "Sullivan is offering his help to protect you and our son." He swallowed as he looked uncomfortable, "He...He wants to adopt Iruma as his grandson."

"What?"

Kalego sighed as he glanced down at their son who watched them in confusion. "Apparently that was his reason for visiting us. After learning about your humanity, he's even more determined to be our son's grandfather." He finished as he gently his hand through Iruma's blue tufts.

"I don't understand. Why would he want to adopt a half-demon as his grandchild?" Asuna asked as she tried very hard to make sense of this.

Kalego scratched the back of his head, "I've long since given up trying to figure out the old man. He's one of the Three Heroes, and two them have grandchildren of their own who seem to enjoy rubbing it in Sullivan's face."

Asuna blinked at him, "Does he not have any family living with him?"

"Nope, just him and Opera."

Asuna nodded in understanding, "Oh, now I see, he's jealous of his friends, and he feels lonely and unfulfilled."

Kalego hummed, "Yep, pretty much. Initially, I'm against it because that would mean I'd have to see him more than I would prefer."

Asuna laughed nervously; he's never shy about his dislike towards his boss.

"But then Balam said something about how it provides extra protection for you and Iruma." Kalego added, his face conflicted.

Asuna tilted her head, "If that's the case, then why haven't you accepted it?"

"I wanted to talk to you about it before we even think about making it official." Kalego explained with a frown, "You're still new to the Netherworld, and the only demons you know and trust are me and Shichiro. You don't know them as well as I do. If you're not comfortable with Iruma being with Sullivan and Opera, I'll tell it to them straight. We'll still have them as allies."

Asuna stared at Kalego for a long time as that calm reassurance washed over her. Kalego is giving her final say about what to do for their son. The only demons she's ever interacted with are Kalego and Balam, neither of them showed any interest in harming her at all. Opera, their senior back when all three of them were students, is able to subdue Kalego with minimal effort. The hellcat enjoys messing with him just to get a reaction. Sullivan, a demon revered for his yodh rank, and from what Kalego taught her, was once the attendant to the Demon King Derkila and is a candidate to becoming the Netherworld's next ruler. Such a powerful demon, yet he chooses not to take the position and remain at Babylus as its principal.

Asuna looked down at their son who watched them with calm curiosity. She hummed in contemplation before she looked up at Kalego again, "Kalego, you've known the Chairdemon since you were a student, do you trust him and his power to protect the school?"

Kalego sighed through his nose, "Unfortunately, yes. Even though he's annoying, his primary concern has always been the students and the teachers."

Asuna nodded, "I'd like to talk with him then."

Balam stayed with Sullivan and Opera as they waited patiently for Kalego to return with Asuna and Iruma. They looked up when they heard two sets of footsteps enter the common room. Both of them were the image of a united front, their faces set with resolve as they walked beside each other.

Asuna cradled Iruma close to her chest as she glanced at their two guests before she and Kalego sat on the couch across from them. Balam got up and occupied the armchair sitting diagonally from the couches.

Asuna bowed her head in greeting, "Hello Lord Sullivan, I am pleased to make your acquaintance. My name is Suzuki Asuna, this is our son, Naberius Iruma." She spoke in a calm and even tone as she glanced at her dozing son with affection.

Sullivan smiled, "Such lovely names."

Asuna nodded in thanks before she spoke, "Kalego told me what you want, and that you know about me."

Sullivan's smiled waned as he bowed his head, "Yes, he also informed me about the misfortunes in your life and how Iruma was conceived, you have our condolences."

Opera nodded in agreement from beside their boss.

Asuna smiled slightly, "While the circumstances weren't ideal, I don't regret this little one's existence. I found strength through him and his father to break free from that man." She said as she looked at her son with all the love and tenderness of a mother.

Sullivan and Opera can see how much this woman cares about her son and Kalego despite being used as a breeding tool for profit. She didn't seem to mind being in the Netherworld at all, and it's more dangerous than the human world. Though considering the hell she endured at her father and brother's hands, they don't blame her for taking her chances with demons.

"You said you want to be our son's grandfather, is that correct?" Asuna asked, getting back to the main topic of this meeting.

"Yes, you see I don't have children of my own and it's been a dream of mine to have a grandchild to dote on and spoil." Sullivan fiddled with his fingers, pouting as the little treasure to fulfill that dream is just a coffee table away.

Asuna laughed softly, "Jealousy and loneliness have made you desperate. Though it's understandable given your occupation. You watch over everyone's children and you desire one for your own. It's quite natural to feel that way."

"So, does that mean I can be Iruma's grandfather?" Sullivan said with hope and eagerness as he stared at the little dumpling with sparkles in his eyes.

Asuna took a deep breath and spoke in an even tone, "I'll be honest with you Lord Sullivan, I do have my reservations. However, I trust Kalego, he knows you longer than I have, and he trusts you." Kalego made a sound of agreement. "As such," A smile of resolve and acceptance fell over her face, "for the sake of my son, I will put my faith in your strength to protect Iruma should all else fail."

Everyone stared at her, some with pride, others with respect as she spoke in a diplomatic tone. Her posture and tone were like that of a noble, powerful yet understanding of one's plight.

Sullivan looked upon her with respect and awe as a smile came upon his lips, "Thank you Asuna, I will not let you down."

Asuna breathed out a small laugh before she stood up and walked around the coffee table until she was in front of the much taller demon.

Iruma began to awaken from his small nap as his blue eyes looked up at his beautiful mother's smiling face.

"Iruma, there's someone who wants to meet you." Asuna spoke in a soft and gentle voice as Sullivan's jovial face came into the baby's line of sight, "This is Lord Sullivan, he is your grandfather." She introduced her son to the older man before she gently transferred him into Sullivan's arms.

Sullivan cradled the infant in his arms as Asuna stepped back, her hands folded in front of her as she watched them.

Iruma made incoherent sounds as he stared up at the bald demon with two horns, glasses and a mustache. He watched him with fascination as he reached his little chubby arms towards the older man.

Sullivan's breath was stolen from him as he held this much too small creature. Without thinking, his other hand came up to the baby's wandering hand until they touched his palm. Little fingers wrapped around the long digits, holding them tightly as Iruma smiled at Sullivan.

Tears of joy streamed down Sullivan's face, "Such a lovely child this is, thank you Asuna and Kalego. You two created a truly remarkable creature." He praised the parents who watched his expected reaction.

Asuna laughed softly at the sight, feeling a sense of nostalgia. "Iruma has already taken a liking to you. He doesn't have any reason to fear you at all. Not that he ever needs to."

Sullivan smiled, "No harm shall ever come to this child, I will teach him everything about the Netherworld."

"I should hope so. I myself was raised by my grandfather. Though it was only for a short while, I gleaned enough wisdom from him." Asuna said with a sad smile of remembrance, "I believe the same can apply for you and Iruma."

"Thank you." Sullivan said before he began to coo at his new grandson.

Asuna made to turn around, "While you two get better acquainted, I'll get lunch underway."

Opera stood up, "I'll help you in the kitchen if that is alright with you."

Asuna smiled at the hellcat, "That would be most helpful, I need to make enough for five today."

Kalego's eyes widened, "Wait, what?"

"They're staying for lunch, it'd be rude to kick out Iruma's new grandfather so soon. Besides, we need to further discuss the adoption contract." Asuna said as she and Opera traveled to the kitchen. Opera's tail swished behind them as they followed Kalego's partner who feels like a breath of fresh air.

Kalego groaned as he ran a hand down his face, "For Derkila's sake."

"Oh, come now Kalego, rejoice. Your son's happy to see me." Sullivan said as his obnoxious flowery aura surround him and Iruma.

"It means I have to see you and that pest outside of school." Kalego grumbled as Balam patted his shoulder to calm him down.

"With Iruma as my new grandson, Asuna will be my daughter as well." Sullivan tossed out, making Kalego stare at him with his mouth gaping open. "Oooh, it will be so much fun, I can buy her pretty dresses, have tea with her, tell her stories from my youth." He nodded to himself, "I'll be the father figure who guides her through the Netherworld. Yes, I will."

Kalego made a move to protest then decided against it. It just wasn't worth the energy and effort, and he's emotionally exhausted.

The hellhound sighed as he leaned back, "If that's your plan, then I highly advise you not to rush Asuna into it." He said as he gave the Chairdemon a direct stare, "She has already been disappointed by one father, she doesn't need to have her heart broken by another."

Sullivan was quiet as he was reminded by the cold painful truth of Asuna's misfortune upon meeting her so-called father. The only other male figure she had in her life was her grandfather who filled the role of a father after her mother died. From how Asuna spoke of him, she holds him in great love and respect.

"Yes, you're right. For now, I'll be her friend, and build that trust she's placing with me for her son." Sullivan said in a wise tone as he glanced at Iruma with fondness. "I hope with time, she will consider me as family."

Kalego was happy Sullivan listened and is willing to not to jump in headfirst. This is one of those few moments where he can actually respect the Chairdemon.

"Thank you." Kalego said as he watched Iruma laugh through his interaction with Sullivan.

"Asuna's lucky to have you, what a good son-in-law you are." Sullivan cooed at Kalego.

A tick mark appeared on his head as he snarled at Sullivan, "Do not call me your son!"

Later that evening, Asuna stood over Iruma's crib after putting him to sleep. She smiled as she watched the gentle rise and fall of his chest beneath the blanket.

Asuna quietly walked out of the nursery and went into the library where Kalego was slumped against the couch with and ice pack over his migraine.

"Quite a day we had." Asuna said as she sat in the chair close to the couch he was on.

"It's the worst we had so far." Kalego groaned as he moved his head to face Asuna. "Iruma's asleep?" He asked, still holding the icepack over the side of his head.

"Yeah, he was so excited today he knocked out." Asuna said as she leaned on the arm of her chair to lean closer to Kalego, "Are you feeling okay?"

Kalego stared at her then turned to the ceiling, "I was ready to kill them earlier."

Asuna's eyes widened slightly.

"When Sullivan said 'human', I wasn't myself anymore." Kalego confessed, "All I could think of was keeping you and Iruma safe, even if it meant killing them." He sighed as he felt ashamed of himself for his actions. Though Sullivan was understanding and forgave him, it didn't make him feel better.

Asuna's hand touched his arm, making him look to see her sitting on the floor beside the couch. "Hey, it was a lapse in judgement, we all get that." She gave him a kind smile, "Opera told me what happened, what they saw during your fight with them. They were really worried about you despite how much you two clash."

"Yeah, they are a smug pain in the neck." Kalego sighed, "No matter how much I want to kill them, I don't actually want them dead."

Asuna breathed out a small sigh of relief, "I'm glad for that. Sullivan and Opera are a bit strange, but I don't hate them."

"That's because you're a special case." Kalego grumbled as Asuna laughed lightly as she leaned against the couch.

"But you know, this does take some weight off of our shoulders." Asuna said with a tired smile, "We're not alone in this, and our son has two extra barriers around him now."

Kalego could not deny that statement as his other hand covered Asuna's, "You're right about that. One thing is clear, Iruma will be the most protected kid in the Netherworld."

Asuna's smile widened, "And the most spoiled."

Kalego's frown deepened, "Yeah, we have to work on the old geezer's proliferate spending on baby gifts."

Asuna giggled, already seeing Sulivan buying their son exuberant presents.

"Yoohoo, Iruma, look what Grandpa has for you!" Sullivan exclaimed upon presenting his grandson with a mountain of gifts.

Asuna cradled Iruma as she stared at the mountain in disbelief, she thought Kalego was joking last night, but apparently, she was dead wrong.

Kalego glared at the Chairdemon, "Would it kill you to restrain yourself!"

"But I bought these with Iruma in mind!" Sullivan whined as he showed his grandson a large demon teddy bear.

"Don't just buy your grandson's love!" Kalego exclaimed in fury towards the old man. He doesn't even know where to put all of this.

Asuna sighed, "Oh dear."

Chapter 5: "I wish I stayed home."

Summary:

Kalego returns to work, headaches ensue.

Chapter Text

Kalego held his small brief case as he flew through the air towards Babylus. After an entire month, his leave of absence, or no-longer-secret paternity leave has come to an end.

Ever since Sullivan and Opera discovered his secret, they made a habit of coming by every few days after school to check in and play with little Iruma. Every weekend, Asuna and Kalego come to the Chairdemon's home where the newly appointed grandpa already set up the baby's room for whenever they visit. Sullivan proved to be every bit of a fun and doting grandpa to Iruma and would often present him with toys and hold him close. On some of those occasions, Balam would come by with tea and converse with Kalego and Asuna and read to Iruma his new books he made for the baby. Opera, with Asuna's guidance, learned how to take care of Iruma's needs. Initially, it was out of duty, but they soon became enamored by the little infant who was just a bundle of sunshine and joy in the normally empty mansion. Whenever the hellcat wasn't taking care of Iruma of performing their duties to the Chairdemon, they'd spend time with Asuna in the kitchen, teaching her all kinds of dishes and cuisines in the Netherworld. Asuna genuinely enjoyed learning how to cook with Opera. She considers them a fun teacher to hang out with even though she has to act as the buffer between the hellcat and hellhound. But despite the changes in their lives, everything felt peaceful and happy for this family.

Kalego touched down on the school grounds before entering through the gates. He sighed as he wandered through the familiar halls of Babylus. It was quiet, for now, and he needed to attend a teachers' staff meeting before classes begin. By now, everyone in the school knows about his 'secret family' thanks to the Chairdemon bragging about it over the intercom one day during Balam's classes. Oh, how he wants to strangle his boss.

The Guard Dog of Babylus groaned internally, he is not looking forward to today, the questions, the badgering; he can already feel that headache coming on. Perhaps it's not too late to turn tail and fly back home.

The morning he got ready to leave, Asuna was already up and making breakfast with Iruma sleeping in his bassinet not too far away. It was pleasant for all three of them and will be the last time they'll spend time together before he leaves for work for a day. Before he went out the door, Asuna gave him a packed lunch and said, "Good luck today." A simple yet warm farewell before he left for school.

Kalego stood outside the teachers' staff room, summoning his patience before he opened the door and entered.

Dali looked up and grinned upon seeing his former pupil. "Hey everyone, Kalego's back!" He announced as he stood up then approached the teacher.

"Welcome back Professor Kalego. Did you miss us?" Dali asked, still grinning at the scowling teacher.

"No."

"Oh, come on, after everything we've been through and the trouble I went through as your mentor?" Dali asked, giving him a 'woeful' expression.

Kalego's blank look was his answer before he dropped his act.

"Good to know fatherhood hasn't diminished your spirit." Dali said, grinning widely as Kalego's scowl deepened. "I also hear you've got yourself a beautiful wife. Well, tell us, is she really as sweet as the Chairdemon says? Come on, we need details!" He poked at Kalego, eager to know the kind of woman who is able to withstand the mean and scary professor of Babylus.

"That is none of your business." Kalego growled low in his throat before he set Dali with a glare, "What I want to know however is who among the staff told my secret."

Dali took a step back and crossed his arms, "Sorry, but I have no clue who-" Kalego whipped out Netherworld currency equivalent to fifty bucks, "It was Marbas." Dali quickly said as he snatched the money from Kalego's hand.

The Torture Arts teacher paled at being sold out before he opened the window beside him to escape. But before he could fly away, Cerberus picked him up by the back of his uniform with his teeth. The demon helplessly flailed withing the beast's jaws.

"Pick a God and say your prayers." Kalego said with a vengeful smile that terrified the entire staff, especially his victim.

Poor Marbas could only cry as he was subjected to torment Kalego-style.

By the time lunch hour came, Kalego gracefully fell in his chair with a groan. The last five hours were filled with pestering questions of how he acquired a wife, who she was, how they met, if he was sure the baby was his; the last one nearly caused him to sic Cerberus onto that particular student. The mystery behind the woman who enchanted the strictest demon in the Netherworld has been the hot topic of the school for students and teachers alike.

He opened his bento box Asuna gave him, as he removed the lid, he noticed something taped inside the top. He removed the folded piece of paper and opened it.

You'll be okay. You got this.

-Asuna

Kalego allowed a small smile on his face. A few words on one little note to give him strength. Asuna knew today would be trying, so she's showing her support to let him know he's not alone in this.

"A little love note from the missus?" Dali slid up behind him with Orias and Tsumuru. All three of them saw the note and couldn't help but go 'awe'.

Kalego choked on his saliva as he quickly stashed the paper in his pocket. "That's none of your business!" He growled as the teachers sat at the table with him.

"Hey, we're not judging. We think it's really sweet." Tsumuru said with a friendly smile as he sat beside the stoic man.

"Yeah, from how Marbas described her when he saw you two at the baby store, she sounds like a very warm and caring person. You lucky thieving bastard." Orias praised Kalego who scowled at all of them before he attempted to eat his food. Asuna's cooking has improved with Opera's help, it tastes delicious.

"So, tell us, where did you steal her from?" Dali leaned forward across from Kalego with an excited grin.

"That's classified." Kalego simply said as he tried his best to ignore them.

"Oh, come on, we need to know how the great and terrifying Kalego managed to snag himself a sweet and gentle wife." Dali whined childishly, much to Kalego's annoyance.

"She's not my wife. We have a child together and we respect each other." Kalego said, his heart aching at the denial he spoke.

This caught Dali's attention, "Is that so?" An opportunist smile crawled onto his face, "In that case, you wouldn't mind if I take her out on-"

Cerberus appeared behind Kalego, sending Orias and Tsumuru out of their chairs and onto the ground. The hellhound bared his teeth and glared murderously at his former mentor, "If you dare finish that sentence, or even commit to it, I'll end you." He threatened as lightning crackled throughout the room.

Dali raised his hands up in surrender, "Relax, I was only joking. Mostly." He muttered to himself as Tsumuru and Orias crawled further away from the raging teacher.

"What do you mean 'mostly'?" Kalego questioned before Dali pulled out his phone and showed him a picture.

Kalego felt his insides freeze at the photo presented to him; it was Asuna sitting on the seat at the window with her legs bent towards the ceiling as she held Iruma who was propped up against her thighs facing his mother. Both of them happy and content as they watched each other, unaware of the person taking their picture.

"Where did you get that?" Kalego seethed as Dali stared at the photo with a smirk.

"The Chairdemon sent it to every teacher on staff. He wanted to show everyone his 'beautiful new daughter and adorable grandson'." Dali chuckled, "I gotta say, Marbas' description did her no justice. I mean, that is a Fertility Goddess." He praised as he stared at Asuna's serene smile, "I don't blame you for hiding her. Any man would do the same to keep other demons from stealing her."

The phone was snatched out of his hand by Kalego who pressed the button to delete the picture.

"Hey!" Dali exclaimed as the phone was tossed back to him. "I liked that picture." Dali whined when he realized the beautiful woman is no longer in his phone.

"Be happy I gave it back to you in one piece." Kalego then turned to Orias and Tsumuru, "That picture better not be in your phones either."

The two teachers quickly whipped their phones out and deleted it in case Kalego destroys their precious devices.

"And here we thought you having a family would make you less mean." Dali pouted as Kalego resumed eating his lunch.

By midafternoon, Kalego returned home. This entire day was the most trying out of all the years he worked as a teacher. He kept glancing at the clock every few hours, willing the hands to go faster so he can leave the school.

Kalego breathed a sigh of relief and allowed himself to finally relax as he stepped into his home. It was quiet, too quiet for his liking. He made his way through the house, checking the library for a moment before he went into the nursery and saw Asuna passed out in her chair and Iruma napping.

Kalego smiled a little at the familiar sight, Asuna really has a bad habit of falling asleep in uncomfortable positions. He quietly approached her and cupped her cheek, "Asuna, I'm home." He gently nudged her awake.

Asuna mumbled incoherently as she opened her blue eyes to see Kalego in front of her. She blinked multiple times before she rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand as Kalego pulled back. "Welcome home."

Kalego glanced at the sleeping Iruma, he felt at peace watching their little one like this.

Asuna stood up, massaging her neck as she stared at their baby with a tired smile on her face, "He wore himself out crying."

"Hm?" Kalego turned to her with a questioning gaze, noticing her frazzled state compared to her normally serene demeanor.

Asuna laid a hand in the crib's rails, "He woke up earlier and saw you were gone and threw a fit."

Kalego felt a sting of guilt realizing he caused that, "I am so sorry."

Asuna gave him a reassuring smile, "This was going happen eventually. He's so used to seeing his father around he became fretful when you weren't here. Poor thing."

Kalego looked down at their son and noticed how Iruma's face became from crying.

"What about you? You had to deal with more children." Asuna asked gently when she noticed his stress.

Kalego sighed quietly, "Just the usual if not more. I feel like I'm the only adult at the school. Not even the teachers were mature."

Asuna rubbed his back comfortingly, "Looks like we all had a rough first day."

Kalego could not disagree with her there.

Iruma's face scrunched up as he moved his little arms around before they slowly opened and saw both of his parents standing over him. Upon seeing the dark-haired man, the little one began reaching his arms out to him.

Kalego let out a small chuckle as he reached down and picked Iruma up, holding him close as the baby nuzzled his chest. "I'm sorry to keep you waiting."

Asuna smiled at the sight, though she was exhausted, she can't complain considering who Kalego had to deal with the entire day.

"I'll go make some tea." Asuna announced as both parents and child left the nursery.

While Asuna prepared a kettle, Kalego held his son who stared back at him content and happy to see his father again. Kalego relaxed as he glanced at Asuna, though her stance looked tired, she still carried that vibrant and serene aura around her as though to let everyone know it's safe. Being at back at Babylus confirmed one thing, Asuna and Iruma are by far his favorite adult and child to be around.

Chapter 6: "What do my scars hide?"

Chapter Text

Asuna hummed a song as she did her household chores with Iruma strapped to her front. She was currently outside watering the outdoor plants with a sunhat on her head.

It has been three months since she came to the Netherworld, three months since Iruma was born, three months since she reunited with Kalego.

Asuna still continued her studies with the help of Kalego, Balam, Opera and Sullivan. All four demons, both her teachers and members of her precious family. As she adapted to the Netherworld, she compared it to how she lived in the human world. The only two people she loved and cared about the most were dead, and while she didn't hate humanity as a whole, she couldn't trust her species with Iruma's well-being. Here in the Netherworld, she feels a sense of belonging and every day is an adventure to her. Despite the dangers, she doesn't mind it seeing how she grew up around it. All in all, life in the Netherworld is truly exciting.

The sound of a carriage coming towards the Naberius Manor made her pause in watering the plants. She saw a familiar carriage pulled by demon horses with Opera holding the reins.

With the watering can dangling from her hand and her arm around Iruma's back, she approached her guests with a welcoming smile as Sullivan exited the carriage.

"Yoohoo!" Sullivan greeted with his usual jovial aura.

"Lord Sullivan, good to see you. Wait, aren't you supposed to be at the school?" Asuna asked since it was still noon. Classes don't end until three in the afternoon.

"I finished all my paperwork and meetings for today. I wanted to see me favorite grandson~." He sang as he crouched to Iruma's level as he entered the baby's line of sight.

Baby Iruma made excited sounds upon seeing his grandpa again.

Sullivan squealed at the adorable musical laughter from the baby. He never gets tired of hearing it.

Asuna laughed softly, already used to the old man's antics. "Would you like to come in?"

"That would be lovely, thank you." Sullivan said as Opera carried presents into the house.

Asuna sighed upon seeing the gifts...again. "Lord Sullivan, must you keep buying such unnecessary presents? You know how Kalego and I don't want you spoiling him like this." She scolded him as they entered the house.

"But I can't help it, if I see something Iruma will love, I have to get it. Besides, most of these presents are for you too." Sullivan added with a proud smile.

Asuna smiled up at the Chairdemon, "You don't need to buy me gifts."

"But I wanted to. As it so happens, with you as an unofficial member of the noble house Naberius, you deserve to dress like one." Sullivan explained with extravagant gestures as he signaled for Opera to come forward with one of the presents, a white box with a blue ribbon.

Sullivan held his hands out for Iruma. Asuna sighed as she unstrapped her son and transferred him to the older demon's arms. She took the box from Opera's arms and pulled off the ribbon then opened the box. Her eyes widened when she saw a beautiful navy-blue dress with matching sequins on the bodice. She set the box onto the coffee table and pulled the dress out to get a better look. It was floor-length, straps ending at the shoulder with a cape attached falling down the back to give it a regal appearance.

"Lord Sullivan...this dress..." Asuna could not find the right words to say when she turned to the Chairdemon.

"Mmhm, I know how much you prefer blue. When I saw this color, I knew instantly that it would fit you. Opera will help you try it on." Sullivan said before she could refuse as Opera appeared beside her and plucked her off the ground.

So here she was in her bedroom with the hellcat butler. She blushed when she realized that this dress requires additional help to put on. "Um, Opera, could you turn around for a bit? I'll call you when I need assistance." She said as she clutched the dress to her chest.

Opera bowed their head before they faced the wall.

Asuna turned around with her back to the hellcat. After laying the dress on the bed, she began to peel off her clothes.

Opera, due to their own curiosity, decided to sneak a peek as they turned their head. But the second their eyes saw Asuna's back, they felt a wave of overwhelming emotions well up within them. Anger, sadness, pain, sympathy, hate, and anguish.

Opera knew that humans have no wings, but instead of a pale back, they saw a multitude of scars decorating her skin. The marks crossed and overlapped with each other, burns, whips, knives, deep scratches; all of them screamed with agony. But the most horrific scar was located in the middle, right at her spine where wing roots would normally be. It is nothing more than a bubbling red blotch.

'When Kalego said not to buy anything that shows her back...' Opera clenched his teeth as they remembered Kalego scolding the Chairdemon when he showed the Guard Dog one of the dresses he bought for Asuna. The look of pain in his eyes when he saw how the dress exposes the back.

Asuna stood in her bra and panties as she held up the dress as she tried to figure out how to put it on without damaging the fabric. "Hey, Opera, does this have a zipper some-" She turned and froze when she caught Opera's widened and shocked gaze. "-where?"

Asuna frowned and looked down. She was silent, unable to meet their gaze. "You saw."

Opera's hand appeared and touched hers. "Let me help you."

Asuna nodded, unable to speak as she let the hellcat help her put on the dress. Silence filled the room, their eyes carried sadness over the scars littering the human's body. Opera got a closer look at the scars, and felt his own skin burn from the imagined pain. Especially at their wing roots.

When Opera finished, they took a step back as Asuna stood in front of the mirror. The dress hugged her figure, accentuating her curves. She turned to the side, watching as the cape swished around her ankles. They way it flowed around her while hiding her back made her look enchanting.

"You look beautiful." Opera said as Asuna inspected her reflection.

A wry smile fell on her face, "The dress is beautiful. I'm not."

Opera's hand fell on her shoulder, making her turn around to meet the golden eyes of the hellcat. Their normally emotionless and composed face carried pain and understanding.

"But you are." Opera said very strongly and comforting, "You are a beautiful woman, inside and out."

Though their sentiment brought her some comfort, it didn't quell the ache within her soul.

"I wish I can believe that." Asuna turned to her reflection, "But the mirror always tells me the truth."

"Lady Asuna-" Opera's voice caught in their throat, "The pain you suffered...I'm so sorry." They bowed their head, their ears drooped. "I know that no words will remove the scars. But what you see in the mirror is different from what everyone sees when they look at you. And there is one truth we all know."

Asuna slowly turned back to Opera.

"No matter how many scars you have, they cannot hide who you are. Your kindness, compassion, thoughtfulness and pure love for your son is what makes you extraordinarily beautiful." Opera laid both hands on Asuna's shoulders, staring directly into her eyes, "Even if you don't believe us now, we'll keep telling you until you see it for yourself."

Asuna felt something within her heart crack at those words. Those familiar comforting words her mother and grandfather often say to her in moments when she felt worthless. Growing up short and stubby, she never saw herself as pretty, let alone beautiful. When her father and brother got their hands on her, she felt even more ugly with every scar they planted on her body. Those who looked upon her scars always shied away in revulsion, as though touching them was contagious. It's why she always kept herself covered, never exposing those horrific marks.

A tear streamed down her cheek, more followed as she clenched her eyes shut and leaned forward, wrapping her arms around the hellcat as she wept into their chest.

Opera held her close as they patted her head. Their heart held sympathy for the woman who showed them an unyielding resolve to remain in the Netherworld. The hardships she endured, the strength she demonstrated all for the sake of survival. Seeing the scars strengthens Opera's resolve to make sure she survives the Netherworld.

Asuna pulled away and wiped her tears, "Thank you Opera."

Opera brushed away the remaining tears, "If someone tells you you're not beautiful or says something insulting, you come to me. I'll be sure to teach them thoroughly." They said, their tone holding promise to maim those who dare insult this sweet and gentle human.

"Please don't kill them."

"I won't." Opera swore, after all, you can't torture someone who's dead.

Opera touched her long hair, "Let's do something about this hair."

Kalego groaned as he entered his home after another arduous day at the school. He looked up, irritated and unsurprised to see Sullivan on the couch in the waiting area close to the door holding Iruma and making ridiculous sounds to make the baby laugh.

"You're here. Again." Kalego said as he closed the door behind him.

"Oh, look Iruma, it's your grumpy Papa." Sullivan pointed at Kalego who approached them.

"Aoa." Iruma greeted his father in incomprehensible syllables.

Kalego laid his hand over his son's fluffy head, much to the infant's delight.

"Where is Asuna?" Kalego asked the Chairdemon, not bothering to look up at his boss.

"She's getting changed." Sullivan said with a secretive smile.

"Oh?"

"That's right." Opera appeared suddenly beside him, making Kalego jump out of his skin and back away from the hellcat.

"Can't you appear normally?" Kalego growled at Opera who, as ever, was unphased as they gestured to the top of the stairs.

Everyone looked up and were left unprepared by the vision coming down the stairs, holding the rails as she descended. Her blue hair was styled in intricate braids wrapped around her head as the rest fell down her back. The blue dress hugged her figure and reached her ankles as the cape attached to the shoulder straps trailed behind her, giving them the illusion of wings fluttering as she moved.

Kalego was spell bound and struck silent as the beautiful Goddess he is proud to call the mother of his child came to the bottom floor and approached them.

"Welcome home Kalego." Asuna greeted, blushing when his gaze locked onto her figure. "Um, Lord Sullivan asked me to try this on and Opera helped me. Does it look strange?"

Kalego quickly snapped out of his daze before he found his voice, "It suits you."

Opera touched his shoulder with a teasing look, "Now Kalego, no need to be bashful."

"Aww, is our little Kalego being shy because Asuna prettied herself up for him?" Sullivan cooed as he patted the hellhound on the head.

Kalego went red in the face from anger and embarrassment before he bared his teeth at the intruders, "I am NOT shy!" He growled as steam came off the top of his head.

Asuna sighed, already used to the scene before she spoke in a reprimanding tone, "Alright, that is quite enough now. Honestly, Iruma is more mature than you two adults."

Iruma made a sound as though to agree with his mother.

Asuna smiled at her son still in his grandfather's arms. "Lord Sullivan, the dress is truly magnificent, I'm not sure what occasion I can wear this at, but I will keep it on hand." She said, smiling up at the oldest demon in the room.

Sullivan caught sight of the scar around Asuna's neck, her delicate alabaster skin marred by a shackle.

"One more thing." Sullivan said as he passed Iruma to Kalego before he went over to the many gifts he got for his daughter. They watched his back as he rummaged through the boxes until he straightened up and came back to them with a much smaller gift in his hand.

Asuna took the box before she removed the lid and was greeted by a choker necklace. It was an elegant gothic lace with a blue ribbon woven through with an eye-catching oval-shaped blue gem in the center framed by gold with a smaller blue jewel dangling below.

She gasped at the beauty of it then looked up at Sullivan's paternal smile, "Do you love it?"

"It's so beautiful." Asuna said as she eyed the beautiful piece then asked, "Could you help me put it on?"

"I'd be happy to." Sullivan responded, overjoyed to do this for Asuna.

Asuna carefully pulled the choker out of the box and handed it to Sullivan. She turned around as Sullivan fastened the jewelry behind her neck. Once he was done, she faced them again with a beautiful smile. "How does it look?"

"It matches your eyes." Kalego said as Iruma played with his capelet.

"I thought so too." Sullivan nodded with approval, "You look like a true noblewoman."

"You're too kind Lord Sullivan." Asuna blushed at the compliments.

"She does look like a Naberius bride." Opera whispered to Kalego who blushed deeply. But before he could respond, Sullivan clapped his hands together to call attention.

"Now then, while Kalego and Opera get dinner started, let me teach you some etiquette in demon society." The Chairdemon said as he snatched Iruma back from his father.

"Hey!" Kalego protested but was held back by Opera.

"We mustn't keep dinner waiting." The hellcat said as they literally dragged the struggling hellhound towards the kitchen.

Asuna gave Kalego a sympathetic smile and mouthed, 'Good luck.'

She turned back to Sullivan, "You said something about etiquette?"

Sullivan nodded as he cradled his grandson, "Yes, don't worry, this will just be the beginner's lesson." He said as he guided Asuna towards the common area.

"How do I get dragged into these things?" Kalego groaned as he made dinner with his second least favorite person.

"Because I'm stronger than you." Opera simply said as they focused on cooking.

"Tch." Kalego scoffed unhappily.

Opera slowed in their task and turned to Kalego, "I saw her back."

Kalego stopped peeling the demon version of potatoes.

"You did the right thing by telling us to cover her back." Opera gripped the wooden spoon they were using, "The severity of those scars..."

Kalego sighed, "She's very self-conscious about them. The one in the middle of her back, she resembles a demon who's been-"

"-Grounded." Opera finished, silently seething as that one scar remained fresh in their mind.

"Yes." Kalego bowed his head, "Much as I detest those humans who dare call themselves her family. That scar in particular may be the only thing that can ensure her stay here in the Netherworld." He said, remembering the first time he got a look at that scar under the moonlight. If he wasn't aware of her humanity at the time, he would be certain she was a demon who was robbed of her precious wings.

Opera frowned, "I was thinking the same thing. Should Demon Border Patrol suspect anything, they'll come to the same conclusion."

Kalego sighed, "Let's hope so."

Opera looked somewhat discomforted, "Speaking of Border Patrol, have you spoken with Narnia?"

"Not since I returned from my disappearance." Kalego swallowed as he remembered his older brother, "I can't let him know about Asuna and Iruma."

"What will you do should he find out?" Opera asked, knowing how close the brothers are to each other. It was no secret among their small group how much Narnia hates humans. If he were to learn how his younger brother of all people allowed one to live with him and created an offspring together, it can very well create a disaster.

Kalego's eyes narrowed as he stared off into space, "I will do what is necessary to safeguard my treasures from him." He paused as he summoned his resolve, "Even if it means doing the unthinkable."

Opera could sense the meaning behind that sentence. If the worst does come, Kalego will have to destroy his own brother to protect his family. Opera prayed to the devil that it will never come to that.

When dinner was served at the dining table, Kalego's eyes would often be drawn to Asuna, noting her posture as Sullivan coached her through dinner etiquette. As she adapted her body to follow the instructions, she became more confidant and poised as a noblewoman should. One look at her, no one can tell she even has scars, like she has always lived a privileged and clean upbringing. But everyone at this table knows the truth, and the lengths they'll go to ensure she continues to live.

Kalego smiled inwardly, 'The scars can't hide anything; they show how you are the strongest person I know.'

As though sensing his thoughts, Asuna glanced at Kalego and smiled at him.

Sullivan and Opera shared a knowing look, their interaction not lost on them as the hellcat fed Iruma.

Chapter Text

Asuna yawned as she walked to the kitchen with Iruma in her arms. It's been six months since she came to the Netherworld, and today is the first time she slept in past six in the morning. When she got up, the clock read eight and she saw a note from Kalego telling her he made breakfast, and she just needs to heat it up. He also took time to feed Iruma before he left for work.

Asuna looked down at her son and gave him a smile despite her sleepiness as he dozed off in her arms. Though he's only six months old, he still remains small and dependent on his mother and father.

Upon arriving in the kitchen, she immediately opened the fridge and saw the premade breakfast waiting for her, as she pulled the plastic-wrapped plate off the middle shelf, her blue eyes caught sight of the bento box she made the previous night. Setting the plate on the counter beside the fridge, she took the lunch box out and frowned.

"He forgot his lunch." Asuna said as she glanced at the clock and saw it was currently 8:23am. Kalego normally takes his lunch between eleven and twelve. She took out her blue hellphone, a gift from Kalego, but paused before she could hit the call button. Classes have already begun right now, if she were to call him in the middle of his lessons, it would only hinder Kalego.

Asuna frowned as she pocketed her phone as she stared at the bento box for a long time in contemplation. After five minutes of pondering, she nodded to herself, "No other choice then." She looked down at her son who has already awakened at this point and watched his mother. "We're going to school today."

With Iruma strapped to her front, a diaper bag on her back, and the bento box in her right hand, Asuna set out for Babylus. After six months of living in the Netherworld and memorizing the map that gave her the direct route to Babylus on foot, she was able to find the school with very little problem.

"There it is, the Demon School Babylus." Asuna said as she stood there marveling at the structure, it truly is a sight to behold. She nodded to herself as she resumed her journey.

She entered through the front entrance and looked around until she found a map. She stared at it for a long time as she memorized the routes before she followed the path leading to her intended destination. Asuna paused when she got to a hallway and couldn't figure out whether to go left or right.

"Are you a new student?"

Asuna turned and was met with a young first year student who stared in surprise when she saw a baby in the woman's arms.

"Not exactly. I'm trying to find the Teachers' Offices." Asuna explained as she smiled politely while holding Iruma close to her in his carrier.

The young student stared at the baby wide-eyed and in awe at the cute sleeping face before she pointed in the direction, "Down that hall and make a right. You'll see a sign above the door."

Asuna nodded, "Thank you." She said before she followed the student's instruction.

The young demoness watched her leave and couldn't help but feel flustered. "Beautiful."

Asuna stood in front of the door to the Teacher's Lounge and knocked. When she heard someone say 'come in' she opened the door and entered. Several teachers turned and were not expecting a young woman to appear with a baby attached to her.

Asuna breathed calmly as she greeted them with a smile, "Hi, I'm sorry to bother you, but is Kalego here?" She held up the bento box, "He left this at home."

One of the teachers with brown hair and two horns approached her, "Are you Asuna?"

"Um, yes."

He held out a hand to her, "I'm Professor Dantalion Dali, it's nice to finally meet." He introduced himself with that smile that made him look like a kid who found a new toy.

Asuna shook his hand, "Suzuki Asuna. This is Iruma." She introduced her still sleeping son.

Dali's eyes dilated as he got a closer look at the infant, "Wow, he's cuter than in the pictures."

Asuna sighed as she knew what he was talking about, unfortunately Sullivan can never stop bragging about his new daughter and grandson. While she did agree to allow Sullivan to be Iruma's grandfather, she can't remember agreeing to become his daughter as well. But if there's one thing she learned is not to bother correcting the old man, it's not worth her energy.

"Dali, you better not be flirting with a student." A man with a scar on his cheek and prominent nose warned from his desk as he glanced their way.

"Uh, technically I'm 28." Asuna laughed sheepishly; this is the second time today where someone mistook her for a teenage. She cursed her small frame and skin for not catching up with her age. She had hoped the demons here would be graceful enough not to make that blunder as well.

"What? No way, you look so cute!" A dark-haired succubus dressed in a revealing outfit appeared beside her, startling Asuna. "What's your secret?"

"I can't take credit, it's genetic." Asuna sweatdropped as she leaned away from the demoness.

"I'm Professor Raim, I teach Seduction classes for young aspiring demonesses." Raim introduced herself as she gave Asuna a seductive look.

"Really now." Asuna said as she hid her nervousness with a smile, 'What kind of school teaches young girls how to attract perverts?!'

Iruma began to wake up and was greeted by the sight of demons he has never seen before.

Raim and Dali went awe at the sight.

"What a beautiful baby boy. He's going to charm all the ladies with those eyes alone." Raim cooed as more teachers gathered to get a peek at the little wonder.

Asuna could not help but feel a hint of pride at the praise her son received. "You're too kind Professor Raim."

Before she realized it, Asuna was sitting on one of the couches surrounded by the teachers as they fawned over her baby. 'How did I get here?' Asuna wondered as one of the instructors, Suzy Stolas sat beside her and produced an exotic flower in her hand. Iruma made excited sounds at the sight of the beautiful flower.

"Such a delightful boy you are. Yis." Suzy smiled before she made the flower petals scatter around the baby, giving him a show before they disappeared.

Asuna smiled at the display and at her son's happiness, "He likes it." She said as she held her baby tenderly in her lap.

Blushenko had tears in his eyes at the sight of the baby, "So pure, and so innocent." He sniffled as he rubbed his eyes with his sleeve, "You and Kalego are truly blessed with such a wonderful child, completely untainted by the Netherworld." The stoic teacher was reduced to tears by the very essence of the child.

Asuna laughed softly, "Untainted, yes. But I believe this child will be the one who shall taint the Netherworld in an extraordinary way." She said, her eyes gleaming with a maternal love and pride for her son.

Orias grinned as he sat beside the mother, being next to her, he could smell something sweet and alluring radiating off of her, "Sounds like something to see." He tilted his head at the baby, "You're gonna cause quite a stir, aren't you?"

Momonoki stood behind the opposite couch as she watched Asuna and Iruma. She too received a picture of them from the Chairdemon. One look at that photo, it was understandable why Kalego would be attracted to her. But seeing her in person, she could hardly believe that such a beautiful woman actually existed. The aura she gives off and the maternal glow that surrounds her made her look ethereal. Loathe as she is to admit, she feels envious of Asuna, yet can't find the will to dislike her.

Asuna looked up at the woman with silver-blue hair and matching eyes staring at her with a discerning expression. "Is something wrong?" She asked curiously as the other woman blushed for being caught staring.

Momonoki waved her hands in front of her, "No, no, it's nothing. I'm sorry for staring. Totally rude."

"That's alright, I forgive you." Asuna looked around the teacher's lounge, "I heard a lot about this school from Kalego and Lord Sullivan."

"Really? I hope it meets your expectations." Dali said from across from Asuna as he leaned back in the cushions.

Asuna shrugged, "Well, I only saw a couple parts of it on the way here. Wasn't sure what to expect as this is the first time I've ever been inside a high school."

This caught the teachers' attention. "Wait, you never went to demon school?" Momonoki asked as Asuna blushed in embarrassment for her folly.

"Yeah, my greatest shame and regret." A rueful smile appeared on her face as she looked at her son, "I wanted to go, but my father never believed in educating women." She gave the teachers a reassuring smile, "Kalego is kind enough to help me catch up, so it's not that bad."

The teachers glanced at each other in quiet shock. They never expected Kalego's mate to be denied an education by her own parent. This must be new territory for the young mother.

Dali then had an idea, one that would stir things up and possibly anger Kalego. "How would you like a tour of Babylus?"

Asuna blinked twice, "I'm sorry?"

Dali grinned, "For one day, we'll give you a tour of our beloved school grounds. Even if you're not a student, it'd be a good experience. Plus, you can see firsthand the kind of school your son will one day attend in fourteen years."

Asuna looked hesitant, "I'm not sure, I wouldn't want to intrude on your classes."

"Nonsense, we're happy to have you here." Dali said with a reassuring smile, "Besides, don't you want to see more of the place Kalego works in?"

Asuna hummed, "I am curious, he has spoken about the school a great deal from his time as a student and as a teacher. But I fear he'll be very cross with me if I suddenly wander the grounds." She stated, knowing protective the man is over her and Iruma's well-being.

"Don't worry, we'll take the blame if he becomes angry. Yis." Suzy Stolas waved off her concerns with an easy smile which Asuna returned.

The blue haired beauty contemplated their offer for a long moment before nodding to herself, "Okay, why not?"

Dali immediately pulled out a small flag with the word 'tour' on it. "If you will follow me Ms. Suzuki." He said with enthusiasm as he and Suzy guided her out of the Teacher's Offices.

The lunch Kalego forgot sat upon his desk.

Asuna was shown around the school as Professors Dali and Stolas gave her the tour and explained the structures.

Asuna listened with rapt enthusiasm as she explored this new territory. She held Iruma close to her as the tour took them all over the school. They lingered in the library where Asuna's eyes sparkled at the multitude of books and the spells written in them. She was tempted to pull one off the shelf and give it a look but steeled herself as she followed the professors.

They soon found themselves in the underground part of the school.

"And here is where we have Execution Cannonball. It's basically a game where two teams go up against each other and try to take their opponents out with a ball." Dali explained as he guided the young mother down the steps to observe the game going on between the students.

'So it's dodgeball.' Asuna surmised as she saw the students play the game, though it looked extreme with how they use spells to launch the ball around and make craters within the arena. All of a sudden, the ball came straight at them. As though in slow motion, Asuna watched as the ball came closer before raising her hand up.

'POM!'

Asuna caught the projectile with one hand while cradling her son in her other arm.

Students and teachers froze when they saw how she effortlessly caught the ball with hardly a look of hinderance.

"Whoa, nice catch, and with one hand." Dali praised the young woman.

Asuna shrugged, "Three years playing this sport. Reflexes never left me." She bounced the ball in her hand before tossing it towards one of the male students with a single horn in the middle of his forehead.

"Oh crap, I'm really sorry about that Miss. Is the baby okay?" Another student with who looked amphibious with his lavender complexion came over with a panicked expression.

Asuna held up a hand to stop him, "That's quite alright, my son is fine. It's my fault for being in the wrong place at the wrong time." She assured him as she gave the students a gentle smile, "I commend you for your enthusiasm and spirit for this game. Well done."

The students blushed at the lovely smile that literally lit up her beautiful face. The student who held the ball dropped it and grasped her hand in both of his, "Will you wait for me until I graduate?" He asked, his blush deepened as he felt his heartbeat erratically in his chest. How can a woman be this beautiful?

Asuna blinked, "Eh?"

Dali pulled the student away, breaking his hold on Asuna's hand. "You really don't wanna do that. That baby in her arms is Kalego's." He warned the student, shattering his dreams in the process. The young demon wept while his amphibious friend patted him on the back.

"Will he be alright?" Asuna asked as she watched the crying student.

"He's fine, these kids bounce back." Dali assured her before he and Suzy guided her out of the cavern.

They showed her the cafeteria where they explained how each rank allows a student a certain variety of food, and the little shop run by the little demon Camu Camu. Next, they showed her the classrooms and Battlers, which were basically clubs, then the field reserved for Familiar Training. Asuna watched at a safe distance as students trained alongside their familiars of various shapes and sizes. She marveled at the beauty within each of them and how they reflect their masters.

Iruma squirmed around as his blue eyes were directed at something in the distance. "What's wrong Iruma?" She followed his line of sight until she saw a building with various locks and chains on the massive gates with a single rope in front. She ignored the teachers and decided to sate her son's curiosity as she walked towards the building until she stood in front of the heavily locked gates.

Asuna held her son close as they looked up at the imposing gargoyles on either side of the entrance. Iruma reached his pudgy hand toward the gate, making enquiring sounds.

"What do you sense in there Iruma? Is there something inside that calls to you?" Asuna whispered to her baby who watched the gate with certainty.

"Ms. Suzuki!" Dali and Suzy jogged up to her before she turned to them. "Please don't wander off, otherwise, Kalego will have my horns." Dali told her, out of breath as he stood beside Asuna.

Asuna gave them an apologetic look, "Sorry about that. Iruma got curious about this building, so we decided take a look." She glanced up at the building, "What is this place?"

The teachers glanced at each other before Suzy Stolas explained, "This is Royal One, the classroom which the Demon King attended many centuries ago. It is a historic relic which students and teachers are forbidden from entering."

Asuna turned to them in surprise, "Never?"

The teachers shook their heads, "Never."

Asuna had a look of disappointment on her face then sighed, "I see. That's a shame." She looked up at the building, "To stand on school grounds, but to never be a part of Babylus. To be robbed of its purpose all so they can end up as museum display." A rueful smile crawled onto her face, "A tragic fate when you look at it that way."

Dali nodded, "Yeah, it's a real shame. Many would give up their wings just to walk the same halls as the Demon King. But it would take someone with a massive number of guts to get this place to open."

Iruma never took his blue eyes off the building.

Asuna hummed, "So it would seem." She looked down at her son who was still enthralled by the gate, "I'm sorry Iruma, but we are all forbidden from setting foot on sacred ground here." She softly said to Iruma before she followed after the teachers back to the main building.

"Here we have the Diabotany Tower, this is Professor Stolas' domain." Dali introduced as they found themselves surrounded by various plants.

Asuna smiled as she took in the flora, "It's lovely in here."

Suzy delighted in her compliment, "That is most kind of you, Yis. Here we study the plant life that grows in the Netherworld. From carnivorous to medicinal, it is important to learn how nature can be both ally and adversary if one wishes to survive the Netherworld." She explained as Asuna and Iruma listened intently.

Asuna hummed as she and Iruma glanced around at the classroom, "Beauty and danger within nature. The Netherworld is truly a marvel once you know where to look and how to harness its attributes."

Dali and Suzy smiled at how enthralled Asuna is with the classroom, a peaceful and loving countenance on her beautiful face. They also saw a thirst to learn, a desire to know the secrets of this world.

An idea sparked inside Suzy's head, "How would you like to have your first Diabotany lesson?"

Asuna turned to them in surprise, "You mean, right now?"

Suzy nodded, "Why not? I have two more hours until my next class. Yis."

Asuna contemplated the offer for a moment before she nodded, "Very well then Professor Stolas, I am in your care." She said with confidence within her gentle demeanor. The more she learns of the Netherworld, the better prepared she'll be in the future.

Iruma made sounds as though to repeat her words as her feelings echoed through him.

The teachers chuckled before Suzy began her instruction. Asuna listened intently, keeping her focus solely on what Suzy was saying. Iruma fell asleep in her arms halfway through and was breathing peacefully.

"Little pup is asleep." Dali quietly said as he covered his mouth to stifle his giggles.

Asuna smiled apologetically, "I'm sorry for him, falling asleep on your lessons is unbecoming of a student."

Suzy waved off her apology, "We'll let this one slide. Yis."

Dali then had an idea, "Hey Suzy, why not show her a beginner level spell for growing flowers?"

This caused Asuna to tense up.

"That's a great idea, one second." Suzy left to get a flowerpot ready.

"Um, Professor Dali, are you sure that's okay? I've never really been great at spells as far as I know." Asuna said with a hint of worry, and she had plenty to worry about considering her humanity.

"Hey, don't worry about what you can't do, just give it your best." Dali assured her with an encouraging smile, one that made it hard for her to say no to.

Suzy returned with two flowerpots and set them on the worktable. "Now then, I'll show you how to make flowers bloom. Just place your hand over the special sapling and say 'Quan-Quan.'" And just like that, Suzy sprouted a beautiful and exotic flower before them.

"How lovely." Asuna exclaims in wonder.

"The best technique is to clearly envision what the flower should look like in your mind." Suzy advised as she took a step back to observe.

Asuna stood in front of the sapling nestled within the flowerpot, a frown of confusion and self-doubt on her face. She glanced down at Iruma who began to stir and opened his eyes slowly. "Hey Iruma, what kind of flower shall we grow?" She softly asked her son with that same gentle smile.

Iruma made incoherent babbles as he spoke to his mother.

Asuna smiled then turned back to the sapling, she closed her eyes as she remembered the cherry blossom trees in full bloom. Those petals were the only thing she missed from the human world as they were only around for a fleeting moment to give her comfort. They were her mother and grandfather's favorite flowers, a reminder of a happier times. She takes a deep breath, keeping the cherry blossom trees in her mind as her hand hovered over the sapling and whispered, "Quan-Quan."

Asuna opened her eyes and gave it a smile of sad acceptance, "I suppose it wasn't meant to happen."

Then the flowerpot began to shake, causing Asuna to step back. "Professor Stolas?" She glanced at the teacher who watched with an intrigued expression as the sapling started to glow. Then tree branches exploded from the sapling, growing at an extraordinarily fast pace as it extended towards the sky and destroyed the roof of the Diabotany Tower.

Asuna was disoriented as she opened her eyes to find herself cradled in the branches of a very large cherry blossom tree. She gasped as she looked down at Iruma to see him reaching his hands out to catch the falling pink petals. He was giggling in delight at the sight of his mother's creation.

"Professor Dali, Professor Stolas?" She looked around and saw the two teachers tangled in some of the branches. "Gah! Are you okay?" She exclaimed as she held onto the nearest branch to steady herself.

"Um, yeah, I'm alright." Dali said with a dizzying look in his eyes.

"This is truly a beautiful flower Ms. Suzuki, A+." Suzy said despite her delirium.

"Asuna!"

The human mother turned to see Kalego land on the tree in front of her, his face sweaty and panicked as he tried to catch his breath.

"Professor Kalego." Asuna greeted in embarrassment, "Um, you see, I can explain."

Once Kalego had enough breath to speak, he asked, "Did you...make this?"

Asuna looked around at the massive tree they were in, "Uh...yeah."

At the Naberius house, Iruma was napping peacefully in his room while the adults sat in the common room to discuss recent events.

The only one who is taking this lightly is the Chairdemon. "Oh my, that was quite a spectacle my dear girl. Truly marvelous indeed!" Sullivan praised Asuna who sat beside Kalego, blushing in embarrassment over what happened at the school.

After the cherry blossom destroyed the Diabotany Tower, Kalego took Dali and Suzy aside and scolded them for thirty minutes for not contacting him about Asuna's presence and taking her around the school where rambunctious demons lurked about. Turned out Kalego overheard one of the students talk about a beautiful woman with a baby on school grounds. He immediately questioned them who told him the woman went to the Teacher's Offices. Then he learned from Orias who informed him how Asuna came to drop off his lunch before Dali and Suzy took her on a tour around the school. The Guard Dog ran around campus trying to catch up to Asuna. Finding her just in time to see that cherry blossom tree sprout through the windows of the tower for all to see.

"I am so sorry. I'll pay for the damages." Asuna told the demons, ashamed of how she caused all that destruction by accident.

Opera returned from the kitchen and poured the Asuna some tea to calm her down. "Don't fret over that, none of it was intentional." They assured her before they stood beside the Chairdemon.

Asuna stared at her cup with a frown, "That was Professor Stolas' classroom though. She must be very cross at me now."

Balam spoke up, "Actually, Suzy's very delighted by the newest addition to her class. Many of the teachers and students find the flower quite enchanting and soothing to be around. They even have lunch underneath the blossoms." He said as he felt the awe and wonder at the beauty Asuna brought to the Netherworld.

Kalego's arms were folded over his chest as a look of contemplation etched onto his face. "I think the biggest question here is how Asuna was able to even grow a tree that big."

Asuna's eyes widened as she tried to make sense of it as well. "I didn't even know I could do something like that." She turned to Sullivan, "You said that humans aren't supposed use magic or have mana. How-How is this even possible?" She stuttered as she tried to comprehend this this discovery.

Balam hummed as he held his chin, his eyes pondering as he watched the coffee table.

Kalego noticed his ally's expression. "Do you have any theories, Shichiro?" He enquired as Balam is the only scientist in this room who has studied the biology of mythical humans.

"Just one." Balam said as he glanced at the only female in the room, "Asuna, while you were pregnant with Iruma, did you experience any changes that weren't consistent with humans?"

Asuna blinked as she thought about his question. "Well, there was this one time when I was reaching the end of the first trimester. Honestly, that time was pretty hazy and I'm not sure if it did happen." She held her forehead as she concentrated on the memories of her captivity while pregnant. "One day, my brother stumbled into my cell, he was in one of those moods and needed me to...relieve him."

Kalego grasped her hand when she shuddered, letting her know that it's okay not to say anymore. Asuna took a deep breath and exhaled, "He didn't want to damage his merchandise inside me. So, he settled with trying to make me serve him by other means. I didn't want to. He began to choke me. I pushed him...Or I think I did. Next thing I knew he was flying across the room into the wall." She explained as she began to remember small details from her captivity. "I didn't even put that much strength into it, but he stopped bothering me for those services."

Balam nodded as she finished telling them. "That may have been because your unborn son was sharing his mana with you."

"What do you mean by that Professor Balam?" Sullivan asked, worried and concerned for his surrogate daughter.

"The reason why you now have mana is due to the pregnancy." Balam began to explain, "When Iruma was conceived, a bit of Kalego's mana was passed into your womb. As the baby grew, so did his mana. Which your body adapted to and began to absorb without you realizing. When you were in danger, you unconsciously activated the mana to protect yourself and the baby." He paused for a moment then added, "Even after you gave birth, your body still carried the energy. You may have also absorbed the mana in the Netherworld without knowing. That's why you released an abundant amount when you made that flower."

Silence followed Balam's explanation as everyone absorbed this piece of information.

"So, what you're saying is, the mana that's originally inside of me came from Iruma? From Kalego?" She glanced at the father of her child who digested this idea.

"It's as good a theory as any. The only one in fact. But either way, whether it's true or false, one thing is clear; you are now capable of using magic." Kalego stated as he locked eyes with Asuna. "You've been here for six months now, and you've studied the fundamentals of magic but never practiced it because we were all under the belief that it was impossible for you until now."

Asuna blinked as she realized where Kalego was getting at. "Wait, does this mean I can practice spells now?"

Kalego nodded, "That's right. However, you need to control your mana first before you start casting magic. That display at the Diabotany Tower is proof of how volatile your mana can be if left unchecked."

Asuna looked away with a blush, "Right."

"Don't be so down on yourself Asuna." Sullivan assured her, "This just means your chances of living in the Netherworld has increased significantly. And don't worry, each of us will help you control your mana. You're already an excellent student, so I don't doubt you will succeed in your lessons."

A smile came onto Asuna's face at the idea of learning something new. "I will do my best Chairdemon." She declared, feeling a little more confident in herself.

After Sullivan, Opera and Balam left, Asuna prepared dinner for her and Kalego for the evening.

Kalego came downstairs with Iruma in his arms after giving him a fresh diaper. He entered the dining area as Asuna set plates onto the table.

After setting Iruma down in his playpen, the parents began to eat.

"Hey, um, Kalego?" Asuna began after the prolonged silence, "Are you still mad at me?" She asked after a moment's hesitation. Ever since the cherry blossom tree, he seems to be in a foul mood.

"Hm? No, of course not. Why do you think I'm mad at you?" Kalego asked as he paused in eating.

"Because I came to Babylus without notifying you." Asuna frowned, "I only wanted to drop off your lunch. I never expected your coworkers to give me a tour."

"You could have said 'no.' Why didn't you?" Kalego asked, curious about what went on through Asuna's head when she visited the school.

Asuna looked down at her plate, "They were all so kind and welcoming towards me and Iruma. It's exactly how I imagined schoolteachers to be like. Never mind the fact they're literal demons." A rueful smile graced her lips, "To be honest, I wanted to see what Babylus is like first-hand since..." She swallowed, "...since I never got that experience like your students." She glanced over at Iruma who was content to roll around in his little fortress. "Also, I want Iruma to see the place where his family works and will one day attend years from now."

Kalego silently listened before he bowed his head, "I understand."

Asuna glanced at Kalego in surprise.

"You were robbed of the chance to have the high school experience like everyone else. Naturally you wanted to explore the environment." He let out a sigh, "Let me make one thing clear. I was never mad at you. If anything, I was terrified at the very thought of my coworkers dragging you and Iruma around with a horde of rabid students around." He grumbled to himself as he recalled one student who came from Execution Cannonball brag about how he will one day marry the beautiful blue-haired mother the second he graduates. Kalego did not take it well and assigned him detention.

Asuna smiled, "Dali and Suzy are quite gracious tour guides. They're great and trustworthy comrades to have around. Surely you can cut them a little slack."

Kalego hummed, "I'll think about it. Tell me though, how do you like Babylus?"

Asuna breathed out a laugh, "It certainly isn't boring, and Iruma had so much fun seeing new things. His favorite is Royal One. Poor boy wanted to see the inside of the classroom where the Demon King once inhabited."

Kalego smiled slightly, "I'm afraid he'll be waiting a long time. Not even the Thirteen Crowns can enter that place."

Asuna glanced over at Iruma gumming on a blanket, "That's a shame, Iruma was so enthralled by it."

Kalego froze behind his desk in the Teachers' Office when he saw Asuna and little Iruma enter with a basket full of muffins of every variety.

The teachers gathered at the aroma of freshly baked goods.

"Asuna, you're back. We feared mean ol' Kalego locked you away from us." Dali joked, earning a glare from the Guard Dog of Babylus.

"Hey!" Kalego exclaimed as he paused from grading papers.

Asuna laughed softly as she held her wide awake son close to her with one arm as she set the basket on the coffee table.

"Forgive my untimely arrival. After that little mishap, I want to apologize." Asuna turned to Suzy and bowed her head, "I'm terribly sorry for what happened at the Diabotany Tower. You were kind and gracious to give me a lesson, and I ruined your classroom. I hope you'll forgive me."

Suzy smiled as she clasped her hands in front of her, "No need to apologize dear. Now the tower can finally live up to its name. Your gorgeous flower. Yis." Suzy praised Asuna for the gift she had given her. Despite the mess, the magnificent tree stood proud for all of Babylus to see.

Asuna straightened herself, still looking guilty, "Still. I feel terrible for the disaster I caused."

"What's it called, by the way? It looks and smells amazing." Orias asked as he took a muffin from the basket, only for it to be snatched by Dali.

"It's a cherry blossom tree." Asuna smiled as she ran her fingers through Iruma's hair, "My mother used to make food and medicine out of the petals like tea or skincare."

This caught Professor Raim and Balam's attention as they stood beside Suzy.

"Skincare, you say?" Raim asked with a seductive look.

"What medicinal properties does cherry blossom have?" Balam eagerly asked for scientific purposes.

"Oh, it's mainly anti-inflammatory and antibacterial." Asuna then went on to explain the process and medicinal properties of the flower to the teachers who listened with fascination.

Kalego watched how at ease Asuna is around his coworkers and how the teachers are happy to have her around. She's even sharing knowledge from her world.

Dali slid up beside Kalego and offered him a muffin. "She's a keeper alright. Never knew a woman like that can exist." He stated with an appraising look as he watched Asuna's movements.

"Neither did I." Kalego said as he tried to keep his cool around his former mentor.

Dali smirked, "I know she's the mother of your adorable son, but if you don't make your claim over her clear for everyone to see, someone will steal her. She is a rare jewel among gems after all." He whispered, causing the man to glare a very clear warning towards the teacher.

Dali pulled away and held his arms up in surrender, "Hey, I'm not gonna push my luck. I like living."

Kalego grumbled, not trusting his coworker before he took a bite out of the muffin Asuna made.

Notes:

Asuna is branching out and making new friends in the Netherworld. After being holed up for six months, it's high time for her forge friendships. I always love the idea of Asuna learning something new about herself, and having mana courtesy of the pregnancy was a total bonus for her.

Chapter 8: "We had a rough night, and I just want to sleep."

Chapter Text

Iruma was crying in the middle of the night, which was hardly new. But this was completely different as he screamed nonstop for what felt like an hour.

Asuna had bags under her eyes as she tried to soothe her crying baby whose face is red and swollen.

"I know baby, I know. Shhh." Asuna swayed from side-to-side, hoping the motion would help calm her son. But it had no effect.

Kalego entered the nursery, looking just as tired and distressed as Asuna. His hair was a mess from lying in bed.

Asuna turned to the father of her child, "Kalego...you should be in bed right now. Big test tomorrow." Her voice cracked as she rubbed her screaming child's back.

"So should you two." Kalego grumbled as he shuffled towards them, "Here, my turn."

Asuna could not find it in her to refuse as she carefully passed Iruma to his father, hoping the mana from the hellhound would calm him down.

Kalego hummed a soft tune, the timbre in his voice normally put Iruma to sleep. But it would seem whatever force keeping the little halfling awake is more powerful than his anticipated.

Asuna flipped through the demon baby book with wide tired eyes. She had a desperate and frightened look as she tried to find what is wrong with the baby. Iruma wasn't hungry, his diaper is clean, and he's not running a fever. If only she could read minds and hear what their son is trying to tell them.

Kalego made a sound of surprise.

Asuna flinched, nearly dropping the book as she faced Kalego. "What happened?"

Kalego glanced at Asuna, "Your son just bit me." He said with intrigue than pain as the bite merely tickled him.

Asuna's eyes widened, "He bit you?" She went over to Iruma who was hiccupping and carefully looked inside his tiny mouth. Two of his lower teeth are peaking through the gums.

"He's teething." Asuna cupped her son's reddened cheeks, "Oh, poor baby. You're in pain."

Kalego nodded as he gave their son his finger to gnaw on. "Any solutions?"

"Just one." Asuna's tired face lit up.

One cloth dipped in cool water later, and Iruma was calm again. His mouth sucked on the cloth that numbed his gums to the pain.

The parents sighed with relief.

"He's okay." Asuna breathed out as she flopped in the chair close to the crib.

Kalego groaned as he ran his fingers through his hair. "He's gonna be in pain for a while now."

"I'll buy him some teething toys tomorrow...and put them in the fridge." Asuna lethargically said in her exhausted state, "The coolness numbs the gums." Her head rolled to the side before she conked out.

"Uh huh." Kalego gently pulled the cloth from his now slumbering son's mouth before he picked Asuna up again and carried her to bed. In his half-awake state, he did not realize he brought her to his room as he fell asleep right next to her.

Asuna woke at around five in the morning. She opened her eyes and was met with the sleeping face of Kalego. She blinked several times before she remembered what happened before she knocked out. She registered the arm draped over her waist and the other beneath her head as a pillow, loosely holding onto her in his slumber.

'He must've been so sleepy that he mistakenly carried me to his bed.' Asuna blushed as she continued to watch Kalego's face. The last time she was this close to him in bed was before her brother sent Kalego back to the Netherworld. There was something about watching him sleep, it felt calming as he looked less intimidating when he's awake. Not that he ever scared her in the slightest. The way his hair fell in disarray around his head as he slept made him look younger, more relaxed.

Iruma's cries made Kalego groan as he struggled to open his eyes. When he cracked them open, he saw Asuna laying in his arms watching him with a tender smile. His eyes widened when he realized his arms were around her soft body.

Asuna laughed softly, "Don't worry, nothing happened. It was all innocent."

Red dusted Kalego's cheeks as he slowly removed his hands from her body.

Iruma continued to cry for his parents.

Asuna stretched her tired muscles, "I got Iruma. You rest a bit longer." She said before climbing out of Kalego's bed to see to their son.

Kalego didn't heed her instructions. He glanced at the clock and saw he had one hour before he has to get ready for work. Even though he feels tired, he could not find the will to sleep anymore. He touched the spot Asuna just occupied, it was still warm, and it held her scent. He buried his face into the pillow her head laid on and inhaled deeply. The uncovered rich and sweet cherry blossom fragrance of her human essence held a strong soothing and addicting concoction.

Kalego groaned like dog who received their favorite dog treat. He'll never admit it to anyone, but Asuna's scent always drew him to her, not in a predator eat prey manner, but as a calming agent to keep himself from becoming aggressive. Even when she wears the concealer potion, his canine senses can still pick up her human scent.

He closed his eyes as he remembered that cold and dark room with only the small, barred window above the bed. He always held her close when she slept after making love. After that first time, it was less about making a child and more about having physical connection with another living being. It was his first time with anyone. While she was no longer a virgin, she told him that he was the first man who ever treated her body with respect. Even though they were technically trapped and forced to make a baby, they could not deny the physical and emotional chemistry between them. Despite the dreariness of their situation, they agreed to make the most of it and figure out a way to save their child from their captor.

Kalego pushed himself to sit up and look down at his lap with a contemplative stare before he left the bed to freshen himself up for the day. As he stood under the shower, his mind wandered to the time he spent with Asuna and Iruma. It's been eight months since their son was born, the exact amount of time Asuna has spent in the Netherworld. While he initially hoped to keep his family a secret from the Netherworld forever, he dares not be cruel to Asuna by locking her away the way her father and brother did. Despite his fears, Asuna has proven herself resilient and has adapted to her new home with extraordinary ease.

Asuna now carries magic and confidence that did not go unnoticed by students and faculty members whenever she drops by to visit or give them treats for good luck. With her acquirement of mana, she's expanding her knowledge in the magical arts. Healing spells mainly, which Blushenko was kind enough to give her basic lessons in his free time. Apparently, Iruma grabbing the stoic teacher's fingers with his tiny hands sealed the deal. Kalego never thought he'd see the guy weep with joy.

Kalego smiled to himself as he turned off the water before he got dressed. Once he was presentable, he came down for breakfast and saw Iruma in his playpen rolling and knocking over his little toys with a hand firmly on the old cloth he was chewing on. He glanced over at Asuna who practically glided around the kitchen like it was her domain. Though he sensed she was tired, she still held that exuberant energy only mothers carry.

Asuna turned and smiled, "Welcome, it's almost ready. I put an extra shot of espresso in your coffee." She informed him as she presented a mug she made him.

Kalego took it with gratitude and drank a small sip. The bitterness soothed his throat as it traveled down his stomach. Now he just needs to wait for the lifesaving caffeine to do its job. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. I'm adding a to-go cup with your lunch for later on. We all had a rough night of it." Asuna said as she glanced at their son with a slightly pained look for what he must endure for the next few weeks.

"I think it's safe to say that Iruma is getting the worst of it." Kalego agreed as he watched their son who is much calmer and numbed from the cooling cloth.

"Yeah, the next several nights are gonna be hard on all of us. Which reminds me, I'll get some more coffee grounds while we're out. Any requests?" Asuna asked as she resumed to cooking the eggs on the stove.

"Just the usual is fine. Will you be okay moving about? I'm sure Opera won't mind helping you out for a couple of hours. I can see the bags under your eyes." Kalego asked like a man worried for their mate's health.

Asuna gave him a reassuring smile, "I'll be fine Kalego. I'll sleep when Iruma does. Besides, with the end of the school year and final exams, I can't possibly ask Opera when they have much to do for the Chairdemon. Speaking of, let's keep our son's teething to ourselves until after the exams are over. You know they'll drop everything to celebrate this little milestone in his Grandson's life." She laughed lightly at her prediction. She hasn't seen those two in nearly a month and she can tell Sullivan is suffering from withdrawals.

Kalego visibly shivered, "Don't remind me. We have enough on our plates with the exams. I don't want to worry about them bursting through the door with balloons again."

Asuna giggled at his distaste for anything bright and colorful. She is able to keep her 'adoptive father' at bay by sending him pictures of Iruma every morning, afternoon, and evening. She's not ashamed to admit that it's fun dressing her son up in adorable clothes.

They ate their breakfast with Iruma sitting in a highchair as his mother fed him soft baby food. She smiled as she praised her son for eating without complaints.

Kalego watched with pride at how much their son has grown in the short time he spent in the Netherworld. Though he was still small, Kalego knew Iruma will get stronger, and soon he will begin to walk around on his own.

Breakfast ended peacefully as the time for Kalego to leave came upon them. Asuna held up the lunch box and travel cup she made him, "I put a warming charm on the coffee. Pace yourself when you drink it." She advised him as he took her offering.

"Thank you, Asuna."

Asuna smiled, "Best of luck to you and the students."

Kalego smiled deviously, "Luck won't save them should they fail, but I'll send them your regards." He nodded before he walked out through the front door and flew towards the school with briefcase and lunchbox in hand.

By the end of the day, final exams are finally finished. Now all that's left is to spend the weekend grading the papers and check who's getting the axe. As per instructed, he took moderate sips of the coffee Asuna made him.

As he sat at his desk grading papers with a fine-toothed comb, his coworkers noticed his grip on his to-go cup.

"How much coffee have you had today?" Marbas asked as he glanced over at the Hellhound from his own station.

"Just this one large cup. I'm almost done with it. Asuna told me to pace myself to help me get through this arduous day after the night we had." Kalego answered without pausing in his work.

Dali slid up behind him with a coy smile. "Oh? Did she wear you out?" He asked with bouncing eyebrows.

Kalego growled under his breath. "Our son was crying in pain at three in the morning due to his first teeth coming in." He sighed, "We'll be going through a trial of endurance for the next few weeks because of his growth."

Marbas turned in his chair and gave him a sympathetic stare, "Well, you're not alone. My cousin's baby is also in the beginnings of that trial. They're just below his gums and he's in agony for most of the night."

"Asuna used a cold towel and is currently refrigerating teething toys for Iruma to bite on. This method numbs his gums, and she said it makes the process manageable." Kalego advised the Torture Arts teacher.

Marbas' eyes lit up, "That's a very good idea." He said before he pulled out his phone to send his relatives a text.

Dali grinned as he patted Kalego's shoulder, "You certainly got lucky with a woman who is looking after your well-being."

"And my sanity." Kalego deadpanned.

"So, a lot of us are curious about when you're going to marry her." Dali's question caused Kalego to choke on his drink.

Dali's grin widened at the reaction he got out of his former underling. "Well?"

Kalego glared at his coworker as he wiped his mouth with his sleeve. "That's none of your business."

"Oh, come on. We gotta know. She's a very nice and honest woman, and she puts up with you." Dali stated, unmindful of Kalego's glare.

"Excuse me?"

Marbas got out of his chair and pulled Dali away from the scary Hellhound. "Um, what Professor Dali is trying to say is we support your relationship and want you to be happy." He nervously said as he wanted to prevent a massacre from occurring in the office.

Kalego hummed, "While the sentiment is much appreciated. What goes on between Asuna and I is not for your entertainment."

"But you like her. As in, really like her." Dali stated with an absolute smile.

Kalego turned back to his work with furious determination. "Asuna is a good person and devoted mother to our son."

Dali chuckled at Kalego's attempt to dodge his feelings. "Keep denying it Kalego. We hope one day you'll realize your passionate feelings, swallow your pride and make her your bride."

"If this is to satisfy another one of your insane wagers, you won't win anything." Kalego stated without looking up from his grading.

"Guilty as charged." Dali grinned as Marbas sighed in exasperation at how Kalego figured out their betting pools.

The Hellhound sighed in annoyance at how his relationship with Asuna is now subjected to gambling among the faculty.

Kalego released an exhausted breath when he landed in front of his home. He was kept later than normal and his finished the coffee hours ago. By this point, the caffeine has already lost its effects and he's just about ready to drop. Brightside, he only has about fifty more exams to grade and he's free.

The Hellhound entered his house and was met with silence. The lack of sound raised his hairs as he quietly shut the door and searched the mansion for Asuna and Iruma. He followed their scents to the library and let out a breath of relief and bewilderment.

Asuna was laying on the soft padded play area curled around baby Iruma who was drooling on a teething toy. She had a small pillow under her head, her right arm served as a head rest for Iruma while her left gently held onto his tiny fingers. They were both asleep and looked very at peace despite their positions on the floor.

Kalego smiled softly as he gently set his briefcase down and quietly approached them. He knelt down beside their slumbering forms and was about to wake Asuna up. However, he stopped himself when he remembered how exhausted she was that morning, and it was sheer will power that kept her moving. With a bow of his head, he was about to stand up and prepare food for them, but found his legs immobile from an arduous day.

Kalego frowned at how his body has reached its limit then glanced at his family who were content to nap on the soft colorful play pads. With a quiet sigh, he mentally said, 'screw it' and laid on the ground facing Asuna with Iruma nestled between. With one hand under his head and his other gently draped over his son's tummy. His heavy eyelids lowered before he promptly fell asleep to the calming scents and steady heartbeats of his family.

Not long after, Sullivan, Opera and Balam happened upon them in the library and were completely in awe at the scene.

The Chairdemon covered his mouth tightly to not wake them with his coos. Just seeing his daughter, son-in-law and grandson nestled so close to each other is just too precious for his heart to take.

Opera's ears twitched and tail wagged before they pulled out their camera and silently took a picture of this beautiful moment. He sent it to the faculty group chat with the captions, 'Post Final Exams.' Oh yes, Kalego will truly be mad and flustered over this.

Balam quietly directed his senior and boss out of the room before he returned with a blanket and draped it over the family. Last thing he wants is for them to catch a cold.

The gargoyle slowly closed the library door and left the family alone to sleep a little longer.

Notes:

Teething and finals are never the best combination as far as sleep is concerned. But yeah, Kalego is still in denial over his feelings for the mother of his child, the faculty put in wagers on their relationship, and Asuna is fully committed to her housewife duties for her not-yet husband while studying magic.
