"Yooo! I haven’t seen you all morning. Wasting your time working your ass off?"
The voice echoed in the dull morgue. Satoru walked in, kicking the door open with his leg, hand in his pockets and the usual cocky grin plastered on his face. Shoko who was re-reading the reports for any mistake, didn't bother to look up at him. Satoru approached her desk and slumped down on the chair across her. With a pout. His legs spreading without caution.
"Come onnn! you can’t have work all the time. You gotta free a little time for your best buddy."
He whined, flailing his arms in air dramatically. If there's something he hates about her, it's the way she drowns herself in work. Like those workaholic yandere male leads who doesn't gives a fuck about the female leads of those romance stories.
"You know my schedule."
"Mhm."
He leaned forward, putting his elbows on the table and resting his chin on his palm. He’s staring right at her while she’s so focused on her work that makes him want to snatch those damn reports from her and tear them to shreds.
"And it annoys me. You’re always busy, too busy. I barely get to spend time with you."
His arms fell between his legs and he slumps down on the table like a jelly in front of scorching heat. His voice barely above a whisper when he mumbled.
"I miss you."
"You see me almost daily."
"Yeah, but it’s always in this boring office. It’s no fun, y’know!"
He huffed. Shoko knew that look very well. Next he'll make a face like a child about to throw a tantrum. A high pitched voice rings through the morgue as he wailed confirming her prediction.
"We never get to do fun stuff anymore."
"That's right. Because we're responsible adults now. We should act like such."
"You’re no funnnnn!"
He groaned. He really does act like a child at times. But he can’t deny that he missed hanging out with her. Remembering all those highschool nights when he, Suguru and her used to sneak out and act all rowdy around the city. He missed their fun, their adventures, their punishments. He miss them.
"I need you to take at least a day off. We haven’t gone out together in like what? Months? Last time it was in March or maybe February?"
Satoru haven't had his kinda 'fun' in a long while and it was driving him nuts. He tried to convince everyone to go camping with him last time and eat marshmallow sitting around a bonfire and all. But everyone turned him down. And he went alone. That memory just made his whinny face distort in disgust. He sat up properly and leaned forward a bit making the chair creak against the tiles.
"Cmon, are you really that busy? We can go and chill at a café, or watch porn, or go for a walk...Anything just to get out of this shithole."
Silence filled the morgue. Shoko ignored his not-so-appropriate words as she flipped through the papers. He pouted again.
"Pleaseeeee? Pretty please? One day. I’ll even be more insufferable until you say yes so just say it now and you’ll get an almost quiet, good Gojo."
With a sigh Shoko put down the reports.
"Okay. What do you want?"
---
"LET GO OF ME, YOU SCUM!!!"
"I'M NOT GOING ANYWHERE WITHOUT DRAGGING YOU ALONG."
"I'LL HAVE YOU ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING!"
Yuta, Toge and Panda stared at the scene with bewilderment. Their sensei was trying to pull their rarely fuming medic out of the infirmary. Shoko had a tight grip on the door frame, refusing to back down even if her pretty pink nails broke. Satoru was pulling her by her legs.
"I wish I could use teleporting."
"Salmon."
---
Half an hour later both were in his car, grabbing take-outs on their way to her apartment. He leaned against the seat in the driver’s and glanced at her as they wait for their orders. He’s been rather silent since they started driving, but it’s a different kind of silence. It’s almost ... peacefull. Shoko sat silently, twirling her hairs around her fingers while she reads the menu from the banner. He didn’t say anything for a bit more. Enjoying the stillness of the moment until he finally sighed.
"You work too much. I still remember the time when we used to hang out almost every day. You’re no fun anymore. And It’ll be just fine if you take a day off y’know. You work yourself to death all the time. It’s not healthy."
"And who's gonna heal the beaten up sorcerers if I'm off? Can't leave everything on Yuta now, can I? He's just a student and still learning."
He huffed and gripped the steering wheel a little tighter. No one's gonna choke to death if she's not around for a day. Can't she understand that? She behaves like an independent, strong headed stoic woman who can take care of herself but actually she's kinda dumb who needs babysitting 24/7. Who needs to be placed on lap and fed like a toddler or she won't eat. Or what was her favourite phrase? 'I forgot.'
"Tch. Yuta can handle it."
He rolled his eyes beneath the blindfold and focused on the street. But he knew she was right. Yuta was still learning while she was experienced and reliable in that task. He can’t argue with her on that one. Shoko glanced at him. Noticing the subtle twitch in his jaw, she knew he was annoyed. She sigh and let her eyes dart to the menu banner again.
"I'm fine."
"You're not."
"..."
"Have you seen those dark circles and pale skin of yours? You look like some water species deprived from water."
"..."
He gave her a brief glance. He couldn’t help it. He was worried about her. He missed that cheerful happy face of hers. Where the dark circles weren't present and her she laughed heartedly instead of giving schooled giggles.
"You never look after yourself, you idiot. When was the last time you even ate a proper meal? Or slept more than 2 hours at night?"
"...I..."
He knew exactly what that meant. It was always the same answer. She always avoided the question or smoothly changed subjects.
"Exactly. You’re going to wear yourself out at this rate. You never take breaks or anything. I worry about you. Not to mention the amount of cigarettes you smoke daily."
"Don't drag my cigarette in it."
"Oh, I will. Cause it’s part of the problem. You won’t take care of yourself and smoke the hell out of the cigarettes like it’s supposed to work as nutritions. You’re going to drop dead pathetically if you kept being a living chimney. And you better not say you’re 'fine'."
"You took me out for a "hangout" not for a lecture."
"Of course I’m going to lecture you! You’re the biggest a pain in my ass."
Shoko took the takeout bags from the lady with a small thank you and paid. He huffed and started the engine . Soon the car was back on the road. He wanted to change the subject. It was always like this. They'll argue on this topic and she'll forget about it completely the next day.
"Fine. I’ll stop. But you gotta give an answer truthfully. When did you last eat an actual meal? Or have a full night of sleep? No lying."
"Ijichi gave me coffee this morning. That's not a meal, I know. But Utahime senpai brought the dinner she cooked last night. I slept after having dinner for like two and a half hour-"
The car came to a halt. He wanted to rip his hair out of his head right now. Was she serious? A coffee and two and a half hours of sleep?!
"So you're telling me you basically survived off of caffeine, a dinner from Utahime from last night and just two and half hours of sleep? For how long has it been like this?"
"Stop acting like my dad or I'm dropping the idea of hanging out with you!"
He mumbled something and started the car again. He couldn’t help but worry about her. She never looked after herself properly and she always put others first. He had watched her slipping in the infirmary so early that even the birds were asleep and leaving after the moon is high up in the night. Sometimes she wouldn't even leave the infirmary.
Getting up on one call in the middle of the night, staying up in morgue for hours. She scolds the students when they skip their vitamins and it's okay if she skips meals. In all this. She kind of lost herself. He stayed quiet for a few moments, thinking over what to say next. He didn’t want to ruin the day by continuing their argument but he can't just end this here when it was going somewhere.
"Just ... promise me you’ll take care of yourself a little more, will you? Just a little more."
Her eyes darted to him on their own. A sense of guilt creeping inside her. She knew he was worried and only wanted what's best for her. But it's exhausting to do so. She opened her mouth to change the subject but his expression shut her mouth. She silently nodded.
"I'll try."
He let out a sigh of defeat. He knew he wouldn’t win this and he also knew she wouldn’t keep her word to “try”.
"…At least you didn’t deny it this time. "
The car came to a stop in front of her apartment. He turned off the engine. Shoko helped him carry the bags in the apartment. Both of them removed their shoes and walked in. The apartment was shrouded in darkness. Satoru took the bags from her and she went straight to her bedroom to take a bath first.
She pulled out a pair of black PJs from her wardrobe, put them on bed and headed to the bathroom. She removed her lab coat and discard it at by the door. She stripped and stood underneath the shower. The hot water helped easing up her tense muscle and made her relax. By the time she was done, Satoru had set the coffee table with their takeout meals, lights dim, soft blankets laying on the couch and a movie about to start on the television.
He glanced at her as she emerged from the bathroom and gave her a smile. He watched the movie start to play on the television. He extended his hand toward her while he adjusted the blanket that was hanging on his shoulders.
"Come on, let’s dig in."
She smiled, shaking her head and joined him. She sat beside him and he enveloped her with the blanket like a flying squirrel. She opened a can of cold drink and passed it to him while grabbing a can of beer for herself.
"This is cozy. Thanks."
He let out a hum of agreement, grabbing a piece of chicken from one of the box with the chopsticks he had. He gave her a sidelong glance and a smirk soon formed on his face.
"Just cozy? No other word to describe it?"
She put down the can of beer, sat up straight, put her hands on her lap elegantly, inhaled as much air as she could and bowed to him.
"Thank you, oh great and benevolent Lord Gojo, savior of weary souls and champion of the overworked. Were it not for your divine intervention and unparalleled kindness, I would surely have perished under the crushing weight of my own responsibilities. Your foresight and generosity are truly a beacon of light in these dark times!"
He burst out in laughter as she started speaking. The dramatic tone and expression were too rare for her. He had to admit, she was hilarious when she wanted to be. His laughs soon reduced down to chuckles and he shook his head, placing down his drink.
"Stop, you’re killing me here."
The movie kept playing in the background but neither of them were actually paying attention to it. While giggling at the little speach she just pulled up, she grabbed a kikufuku from his side and eat it nearly giving Satoru a heartattack. His eyes immediately widened and he choked on his laughter.
"Hey! Spit it out. Spit it out. SPIT IT OUT RIGHT NOW!"
He lunged towards her. She leaned back but there wasn't enough space to move back. He caught her and pinned her on the couch. He tried to open her mouth with his fingers while she fought back, trying to swallow the sweet and not laugh out at the same time. He continued his attack, putting a hand on her chin and trying to pry her mouth open. But she kept fighting him off. She was being pretty damn stubborn.
"Stop. Fighting. Me. And spit it out!"
His onslaught of rebellion made it hard for her to breathe. She bit his finger and he let out a slight hiss. It was rather painful, even if it didn’t last long. He could see she swallowed it now, and he wasn't letting her get away that easily. So he started tickling her. She choked out a laugh.
"I'll throw up!"
Shoko managed to yell between her laughs as she writhed beneath him. Yet he didn’t showed any signs of stopping his assault, his fingers continued to run over her sensitive stomach and sides. He leaned a little forward and hovered above her. A smirk on his face as she writhed and flailed under him.
"Good. Teach you a lesson for stealing my kikufuku."
"Sorry! Stop, I'm sorry!"
She finally gave up and apologized. A large grin spread on his face, his fingers slowly stopping their movements. But he didn’t move away just yet. He continued to hover above her, staring down at her with a mischievous gleam in his eyes. She noticed their proximity now that the laughter had died down. He was so close. Too close for her to keep her breathing even.
"Gojo, I'm hungry."
"I'm hungry too."
He replied absentmindedly while his eyes raked over her body. Which in spite got him a hit in the abdomen from her knee. He got off her and doubled over the space beside her, clutching his aching abdomen. Ofcourse there are times like this when he hates that his infinity is trained to let her in.
"Ow- SHIT! That hurt, woman!"
Regardless of the pain, he got her to apologize and he’s satisfied. For now. He picked up one of the plastic bowl of Udon and started digging in, occasionally stealing glances at her as she mirrored his action, grabbing one of the bowls. Shoko started telling him about her boring day while he shared short stories of his missions abroad he forgot to tell before.
---
After the dinner, the coffee table was filled with empty cans and containers of food while Shoko was nestled against his chest on his lap comfortably while the two continued to watch the movie. One of his arms wrapped around her waist, holding her firmly while his other hand rubbed her side. His head rested against hers as they watched the movie. He was glad to have her here with him like this.
It’s been a while since they’ve been this close or spent time together for that matter. He continued his mindless circles, his touches soft and gentle. Shoko had eaten to her hearts content. It's funny how she's the one who behaves maturely but he's the one who takes care of her like a mature one. Without asking anything in return except for the pecks in exchange of her morning coffee.
The cozy atmosphere, the hum of the movie playing in the background and his steady heartbeat. All were more than enough to lull her to sleep. And she soon fell asleep right there. Enveloped in the soft warm blanket and his tight but gentle embrace.
Satoru didn’t notice her falling asleep at first. His hand was still caressing her hip, but he soon realized. He glanced at her face and smiled. She looked so peaceful and comfortable against him like this. He couldn’t help himself and rested his chin on the top of her head. His mission for tonight was accomplished. Shoko had a good meal. Plus No alarm clocks, no sunlight, no disturbance. He ain't waking her up until she gets up herself.
