Chapter Text

It was the morning after the last episode of Season 3 of South Park aired. Trey is flipping through the mail when suddenly he comes across an invitation for a memorial service taking place in March dedicated to their friend and former co-worker Mary Kay Bergman. Trey looked at the invitation for a few seconds and walked up to Matt who was drinking coffee at the dining room table.

Trey holds up the invitation so Matt can see. “Do you want to go?” He asks.

Matt looked up to see what Trey was talking about then looked down at his coffee and sighed. “It's such a beautiful day today.”

“It's such a beautiful day today” was Matt and Trey’s go to phrase when they didn't want to answer a question. “It's such a beautiful day today” is what they told the press when they asked for a statement in regards to Mary Kay’s death the week she died. The press never published their response and instead reported something like “Matt Stone and Trey Parker are so devastated that they didn't give a statement when asked.” Unfortunately the press wasn't wrong.

Trey rolled his eyes. “Matt, I'm being serious. Do you want to go or not?”

Matt is still looking down at his coffee. “Okay do you want to go! Because I'm not going if you're not going!”

Trey slams the invitation down at the table and yells “I don't want to go if you don't want to go!”

Trey takes a deep breath and sits down at the table. “I’m sorry for being snappy. With the season break just starting it feels like I now have time to process everything that happened and finally grieve.” Trey paused. “It's been pretty difficult.” He is now holding back tears.

Matt looks up at Trey and puts his hand on his shoulder. “I feel the same way.”

It is silent for 15 seconds before Matt speaks up. “I really want to go because Comedy Central wouldn't give us a day off for the funeral but on the other hand I don't know if I'm mentally ready to be in that environment.”

Trey picks up the invitation. “It's not until March so we can deal with it later.”

The phone rings. “I’ll get it,” Trey says as he is walking towards the phone.

Trey picks up the phone. “Trey Parker speaking, hello.”

“Hey!” Doug Markz, the owner of Comedy central, replies.

Trey turns his head to look at Matt. Trey then puts his index finger close to his head and rotates it. This is Matt and Trey’s signal for when Doug is on the phone. The relationship between them and Doug is littered with a bunch of disagreements and calling them into his office at the last minute to question them about their creative decisions.

Trey puts on his fake professional voice. “Hi Doug! I hope you're having a great morning. What will you need from Matt and I?” Trey looks at Matt again and rolled his eyes. Matt lets out a light chuckle.

“Hey! I just want to know if you guys can come over to my office some time today.”

Oh great Trey thought. “Sure! We’ll be there by 12.” Trey exclaims, hoping that he doesn't sound annoyed.

Matt rolls his eyes, looks up at the ceiling, and then puts his hand on his forehead.

“Perfect.” Doug responds. “See you guys then. Goodbye!” Doug then hangs up.

Trey walks away from the phone and then towards Matt.

Matt then gets up from the table and exclaims, “Great so much for the start of our break! What the fuck does he want and why can't it be a simple phone call or a fax message!”

“I don't know but I have a gut feeling he’s gonna ask why we haven't cast anyone to voice the female characters yet,” Trey responds without thinking.

Matt looks down at the ground looking visibly upset.

Trey notices him and tries to think of something that can cheer him up. “Or it can be something else. It's currently 9:43. We have some time to get ready and maybe after the meeting is done we can do something special.”

Matt picks his head up. “I’ll like that” he says quietly.
