Work Text:
Penelope lay in their bedchamber, her back turned to Colin, her body rigid beneath the sheets. The dim glow of the bedside candle flickered, casting long, dancing shadows across the room. Colin stood in the doorway, his heart heavy with a mix of longing and sorrow. Even after so many years of marriage, his desire for Penelope remained as potent as ever. In his late thirties, his virility was undiminished, and their passionate nights together were a testament to their enduring love. Yet now, seeing her turn away from him, avoiding even a glance, left him feeling deeply wounded and rejected.
He began to undress with deliberate care, the rustle of his clothes a soft contrast to the tense silence that enveloped them. Penelope made a slight movement beneath the covers, revealing that she was awake, even though she continued to pretend otherwise. Colin’s heart ached with a complex mix of longing, regret, and frustration.
“Penelope,” he began softly, his voice carrying a tremor of pain. “Can you turn around and talk to me, rather than retreating into silence? I want us to discuss what’s happening.”
The silence stretched, heavy with unspoken emotions. Finally, Penelope turned to face him. Her eyes were red-rimmed and filled with a torment that mirrored his own. Colin took a deep breath, his own emotions catching in his throat.
“I’m sorry,” he said, his voice thick with sincerity. “I should have consulted you before making such an important decision. It was wrong of me to act unilaterally.”
Penelope’s gaze was piercing, her voice trembling slightly. “Colin, why did you make such significant decisions without discussing them with me first? We are partners in this, and any decision affecting our family should be made together. I thought we had agreed that we would handle these matters as a team. Remember when you tried to stop me from publishing my work at the start of our marriage? You made that decision unilaterally, and it caused so much pain for both of us. It was a decision that nearly drove us apart. I thought we had moved past that.”
Colin’s face flushed with guilt as the memory resurfaced. “I do remember,” he admitted, his voice heavy. “It was a mistake I regret deeply. I thought I was acting in the best interest of our family, but I see now how wrong I was. I vowed never to make such a mistake again.”
Penelope’s expression softened slightly, but her hurt was still evident. “Then why repeat it now? You acted alone, assuming that my opinion didn’t matter". Penelope’s gaze was piercing, her voice trembling slightly. “We are partners in this, and any decision affecting our family should be made together. I thought we had agreed that we would handle these matters as a team. Other households may follow a different pattern, with the husband having the final say, but that’s not how we operate."
Colin nodded, acknowledging her point. “You’re absolutely right. I should have included you in the decision-making process. But perhaps you should also consider listening before jumping to conclusions.”
Penelope’s expression hardened, her voice tinged with frustration. “You assumed that my opinion didn’t matter. I’ve been missing our son, who is at Eaton. It wasn’t solely your decision to allow your mother to take him and Agatha to visit Anthony, Kate, and Charlotte in Dover all summer. Violet already has her hands full with Edmund and Miles. Adding another teenager and a child to her care is a significant burden.”
Colin’s voice, though firm, carried an undercurrent of hurt. “Benedict and Sophie will be there with my mother, which should help lighten her load. I miss our son too, but he was so eager to go that I didn’t have the heart to say no. I thought you wouldn’t mind.”
Penelope’s eyes widened in disbelief. “How could you think I would be okay with being away from our son for an extended period? This is not just about missing him; it’s about feeling excluded from the decisions that affect our family. I’ve felt isolated and unconsidered.”
Colin’s heart ached at her words. “I didn’t realize you felt that way. I should have communicated better and considered your feelings more deeply. I thought I was making a reasonable decision, but I see now that I overlooked how much it would affect you. I just thought we could wait until Elliot finished his university year and then join the family in Dover.”
Penelope’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment as she recognized her own hasty conclusions. She took a moment to recompose herself before speaking. “I’m sorry for jumping to conclusions. I let my emotions cloud my judgment without fully understanding your perspective.”
Colin’s expression softened, and a glimmer of affection and mischief flickered in his eyes. He took a step closer to the bed, his voice dropping to a more intimate whisper. “Since we’re being honest and trying to mend things, I have a suggestion on how you might make it up to me.”
Penelope’s breath caught in her throat as Colin’s hand gently traced the curve of her jaw. His touch was tender and filled with a playful intensity that was impossible to ignore. “Perhaps,” he murmured, leaning closer, “we could take a moment to rekindle the connection that brought us together in the first place.”
Penelope’s gaze met his, a swirl of desire and hesitation in her eyes. Colin’s lips brushed against hers, light and teasing, igniting a spark that had been dimmed by the day’s frustrations. His hands roamed over her body with a touch that was both gentle and commanding, rekindling the heat between them.
As their kisses grew more fervent, Colin whispered, “Do you remember those early days when we would stay up all night talking about our dreams and fears? How we would laugh and cry together, completely unguarded? Those moments made me fall even more in love with you.”
Penelope’s initial embarrassment dissolved as the intensity of their connection deepened. She responded with a mix of eagerness and tenderness, her own feelings of hurt melting away as she clung to him. “I remember,” she whispered between kisses, “I remember how you used to hold me close, making me feel like I was the only person who mattered.”
Their bodies pressed together with a passion that reaffirmed their love. In that moment, the earlier argument felt like a distant memory, overshadowed by the powerful bond that drew them together. Colin pulled back slightly, his eyes reflecting a mixture of satisfaction and love.
“I think we’ve both reminded each other of why we belong together,” he whispered, his voice husky with emotion.
Penelope smiled, her heart lighter and her spirit renewed as she nestled closer to him. “Yes,” she murmured against his skin, “I think we have.”
