Chapter Text
I was out of breath. Not only had winter break sort of slacked me off, but I had been thrown around pretty good.
One for all, 10%!
Curling my arm back, I prepared my body for an attack and swung, aiming for the villains ahead.
Winter break had just ended for the entirety of class 1-A, and although we had stuck to our chosen internships and took practice patrol shifts it still wasn't the same as actually training during class.
Kaminari threw his sharpshooting equipment onto a neighboring wall, he exclaimed,
“God, I'm so over this already!” A mound of electricity surged into a bolted line, electrifying his target.
“Watch where you throw that thing!” Bakugou shouted, using his hands under him as he blasted through the air. Smoke encircled him as he propelled himself forward, throwing an explosion towards the rookie villains.
Small clouds of frosted breath escaped our mouths as we encircled the villains. Now that everyone had provisional licenses, random groups would be chosen daily to go off and do some small villain patrolling. It was a good way to practice and help stall as the real heroes made their way to the scene. But what we hadn’t anticipated was that maybe these rookie bank robbers- weren’t as rookie as they seemed.
One of the rookies seemed to have a speed type Quirk and it was becoming exhausting. I hadn't managed to hit more than one pathetic punch on the guy; It was like he saw my every move. It made me dizzy with how fast I had to dart my eyes around to keep up with the guy.
“Can't catch me, can you greenbean?” the snarky villain taunted; running circles around me.
His figure darted around, making him seem like a blur. Urgh just stay still!
The villain left another hit to my back, making me stumble. Suddenly feeling fed up I turned to my right and countered- this time not with a punch but with a kick.
The villain's body fell back on the ground with a thump, obviously he had not anticipated the a kick.
“..shit” He said, his ego tainted.
“We don't want to hurt you,” I yelled, attempting to use words instead of my fists.
“All we want is for you to calm down, you don’t need to do this! Return the stolen goods and all will be okay.”
I pulled my fists forward, activating my quirk- green specs flew around me shining just as brightly. “You don't know what I need!” he yelled, standing up. His black mask covered his face- but it couldn't be dismissed the cocky grin smacked on his lips.
“You heroes always throwin’ us around- treating us like scum” he said, “But I guess I can’t give ya’ a taste of your own medicine can I?” his voice took on an angrier tone. Surrounding us were flashes of electricity and clouds of smoke which filled the frosty, winter air.
“I don't want to have to throw you around!” I protested. “But you make it hard when you commit robbery with aggression!” my cheeks were beat red- I could tell. But what I couldn't tell was if it was from the cold around me- or the amount of times I had gotten hit in the face.
“Some of us don't have the luxury to live normally, ” the villain hissed, readying himself as he planted his feat steadily in the ground, as if ready to lunge. “And so we have to do what we can!” he yelled, pouncing towards me.
Suddenly a crackling sound of an explosion rocked through the air- orange and yellow flashing in less than seconds. “Shut the hell up!” Bakugou yelled; the villain got blown back into a building side wall. “Too much damn talking…” he muttered.
I frowned slightly, “Kacchan! I had it under control,”
“You're here to fight!” Bakugou's gaze snapped towards me. “If they want to talk they can do that with the police.'' I scoffed at his words. The two of us had always had a hard time seeing eye to eye. “Get your shit together and fight the bastards!” Bakgou said as he craned his neck to the side looking maniacally towards the next villain. Another huge explosion was thrown.
I looked back at the fallen villain and saw Mineta completely stick him to the ground using his quirk. “There,” he placed his hands on his hips. “That should hold him till the pros arrive” he said proudly through his lisp.
The team I was assigned today was team 6-A, consisting of myself, Bakugou, Yaoyorozu, Kaminari, Mineta and Hagakure. It was quite the odd group up but we were making it work.
“Where the hell did Nexus go?!” yelled the caught villain as he shouted to his team-mate who had not seemed to have time to respond as he was too focused on countering Bakugou's attacks.
“Oh, shut up” Mineta slapped a ball against the rookie's mouth, muffling his words. Looking over, I noticed the expression of worry on the other criminal's face. He seemed to have started panicking now that he was left as the last one standing.
The villain eventually had grabbed hold of Yaoyorozu as she was doing crowd control; and trapped her by his side.
dashing towards them, I ended up by Kaminaris side.
“I can't shock him if Yaoyarozu’s there- i’ll hurt her” he murmured, seeming torn. .
Everyone stood frozen as we saw his figure get cloaked by a cloud of dust- Yaoyorozu along with him. He had activated his quirk.
When the dust cleared, Yaoyorozu was seen with her neck lodged in the mouth of a giant lion. My eyes widened. It was obvious that Villain had some sort of animal shifting quirk.
“Leave, or else I clamp down on her neck. ” the lion rasped, his voice deep. Yaoyarozu seemed distressed- but kept herself composed. Everyone racked their brain on what to do.
A roar escaped the villain's throat. “Leave us be!”
I looked over to my teammates- everyone was standing firmly. “What should we do?” asked Mineta, looking up. Bakugou kept his eyes on Yaoyorozu, scoffing at Minetas question.
“Maybe we could leave. Have they even noticed Hagakure yet?” I whispered to the group.
“Yeah she could stay back and keep watch- follow him to where their other buddy is hiding” Kaminari chirped in. my eyes darted around trying to get confirmation from our invisible classmate on the plan but I soon realized Hagakure was missing.
“Wait…where even..” I looked in front of me and noticed that although Yaoyarozu looked uncomfortable- scared even; she seemed concentrated. Trailing my eyes down further I saw a small sparkle from behind her thigh.
She was creating something.
“Fine, stand they're for all I care” said the Villain, “It doesn't matter anyways- while you guys were busy with us Nexus got away” the monster seemed to almost be smiling.
I thought back to when this whole ordeal started- Bakugou had come in quickly hitting all three of them with an explosion in hopes of throwing them off. But after that it looked like one of them had used the smoke from Bakugou’s quirk as a blanket to snake away. And of course it had been the one with all the stolen loot.
“Some heroes you are” The villain chuckled, his eyes piercing with animosity. Bakugou seemed to grow impatient at that remark. I could already see heat waves radiating off of his gloves. But before Bakugou could act a voice broke the silence.
“Now Momo!” Hagakure yelled. Yaoyorozu wiped out what seemed to be a blanket from behind her thigh and rolled herself in it- before ducking to the ground.
At the same time, one of Bakugou's belt bombs was thrown directly onto the villain- a large explosion erupting; a burning heat wave rushed by everyone. Everyone took a few steps back at the sudden explosion.
I was the first to move, running towards Yaoyorozu.
“What the hell?” Bakugou said, addressing the situation. “Yaoyorozu!” I yelled, falling to her side. “Are you alright?” She uncurled herself from the blanket, smiling while a little out of breath from the gush of adrenaline. “I'm fine, Thankyou Midoriya.” she said, sitting up. Behind us Kaminari and Mineta made their way to the villain, zapping and sticking him to the ground.
“Momo! Are you okay?! You're not burned are you?” A pair of gloves appeared by my side.
“I'm fine, thank you Hagakure.” Yaoyorozu reassured as she sat up,dusting herself off.
Eventually the cops and pros arrived and took full control of the scene. Us heroes in training were escorted to the ambulance, where they looked over for any injuries or burns. I said a quick thankyou as a paramedic handed me an ice pack and a blanket.
I watched as Bakugou fought off the reporters who had come to pester with questions and couldn't help but stifle a laugh.
Snow started to fall, briskly and gently gliding through the sky. I couldn't help but remember the last time there had been snow, I had been quirkless. A small smile formed on my face as I thought about how far I’d come since then. Not only had I met the hero of my dreams but I had been offered the opportunity to carry on his legacy, my heroes legacy. I had accomplished everything I used to deem impossible.
While Kaminari watched the villains get cuffed and tossed in the back of a cop car he couldn't help but wonder how the girls had managed to do it. He finished giving his statement to the police, letting them know there had been one they hadn’t managed to catch and approached the girls, who were sitting on the back of an ambulance- getting checked for burns.
Kaminari made his way over, asking,“Hey, Yaoyarozu! How’d you know to make that blanket thing?” he asked. That piqued my interest. “Yeah, I wanna know too” I said eagerly
I could see Bakugou look over; listening in.
“Well I had seen Hagakure reach for Bakugou's explosive…everything was sort of a play by ear from there” she shrugged, blushing from the attention. “Well I'm glad your guy’s plan worked, we were struggling to come up with something,” said Kaminari as he itched the back of his neck, chuckling.
“Tch, speak for yourself” Bakugou said, scoffing as he folded his arms to then look away.
“Well I didn't see you suggesting anything?” Kaminari said, also crossing his arms.
“Oh, shut it dunce-face!”
“Hey! What's with the name calling? It's true! You didn't say anything!?”
“Maybe it's ‘cause I know nothing gets past that thick skull of yours! ”
I couldn’t help but chuckle at the quarreling. It was good to know that even though we were all quite cold, and maybe even a bit rusty from Winter break, we were still able to fall back in the normal swing of things.
My phone vibrated in my pocket, drawing my attention. Upon opening it my smile only grew wider. On the screen was a photo of Mirio and Eri.
Eri sat on a bench while Mirio was seen on one knee tying a pair of ice skate laces together. The chat bubble under it read:
First time ice skating! She did great! I replied with a few emojis; saving the photo. That reminded me that now school was back in session I should go visit her. I knew she missed me- or at least that's what Mirio had said.
Suddenly, I felt as though something was off. Goosebumps rose up my back, climbing up my neck before it felt like something was pulling at me, like a surge of abrupt anxiety. Looking up I noticed the police had turned off their lights and sirens, and most of the pros had left. I quickly drowned out my classmates chatter as I racked my brain in trying to find out what was causing this uneasiness.
“What about it, Midoriya?” I looked at Mineta, my expression a little lost.
“...huh?” I said dumbly, not truly knowing what they had been talking about prior. Mineta rolled his eyes before huffing, “Were thinking of getting hot chocolate before heading back to U.A,”
“Yeah!” piped in Kaminari
“That's against the rules,” Argued Yaoyarozu. “Aizawa specifically said that after our patrols to go directly back to U.A” the two boys groaned “Aw common momo, we deserve it” whined Kaminari. The group started making their exit from the crime scene- Bakugou being well in the front as he had no interest in spending time with his classmates.
No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't shake off the distressed feeling from my body. I could feel myself break into a cold sweat. My brows furrowed as I followed my friends from behind.
Suddenly I froze. This was one of my quirks, Danger Sense. I wiped around, on edge as my eyes scanned where we had just been standing, but there seemed to be nothing. The rest of the group stopped in suit, looking puzzled at my heightened sensory. “You okay Midoriya?” asked Hagakure, who glanced around herself. This prompted Bakugou to stop and look back also. “I don't know…” The quirk Danger Sense was like a sneeze, there was always this massive build up that would eventually lead up to a huge moment. But I was hoping it was wrong. Shaking it off I began to turn back, moments passed and nothing happened.
“I think I'm just on edge” I chuckled, shrugging. Bakugou's glare sharpened on me, clearly suspicious. Kaminari agreed, saying I was probably still riled up from the fight. Bakugou observed me walk back, and in the midst of doing so something caught the corner of his eye. In the shadows was a figure which Bakugou quickly registered as the criminal that had gotten away. His hands stretched forward on reflex, and he aimed for an AP shot.
He quickly caught on to the criminal's own outreached hand, which seemed to be pointing to me.
At the same time Bakugou opened his mouth to shout a warning, was also the same time I turned, seeing the villain. I moved forward, meaning to shield my friends upon whatever power this Villain had.
“Deku, Move!” ripped through Bakugou's throat. He curled his hands and sent out an AP shot towards the villain. The bomb-like bullet shot through the air, the group watched as if in slow motion; distress clouding everyone's expression due to the sudden urgency Bakugou conveyed.
The Ap shot reached the Villain, changing his arms' aim towards the floor as he was shot back.
It all happened so fast.
The moment the Ap shot hit the villain's figure, the criminal shot something out of his hand; the beam reached a few feet away from me. The sound of the conflicting quirks made everyone flinch. Crashing into a wall, the Villain groaned, mumbling something about revenge.
I stepped forward, quirk activating. But upon taking a few steps I could sense the floor vibrate, so my steps became uneven.
Suddenly a dragging force knocked everyone off their feet as a huge hole in the air split open. I crashed on the snow-covered floor, the back of my head slamming onto the concrete, my hair flying all over as the portal worked as a sort of black hole.
“Hang on!” Yaoyorozu said as she grabbed hold of Hagakure- quickly creating a grapple hook, wedging it to the ground. It kept the two of them from being pulled in. Mineta shrieked as he threw his quirk spheres on the ground giving both him and Kaminari stability to keep them from getting sucked while Bakugou held firmly onto the corner of the building.
The portal was inhaling the snow around me, my figure slowly slid near the glowing gap.
I flipped over in an attempt to crawl but I had nothing to grasp onto near me. I continued to claw at the ground- my body feeling pulled at like a magnet.
“What the hell kinda quirk is this?!” Bakugou yelled as he looked back, the wind tugging at his hero costume.
The portal grew bigger in size, I groaned as I felt my stomach scrape against the ground as my body dragged backwards from the force. “Midoriya!” yelled Hagakure as she stretched out a glove for me to clasp onto.
Stretching out my arm I realized it was too late. I could feel my body get pulled off the ground.
“Shit!” yelled Kaminari as he watched. I fell back completely; my body being hugged by the portal.
I locked eyes with Bakugou.
Amongst the chaos, watching me disappear through the portal brought a sense of Deja vu upon Bakugou. Except now- the roles were reversed.
I fell through. And the portal closed behind me.
