Scout's honor

Summary:

When best friends and colleagues Rooster and Phoenix are forced to share a room, they set strict boundaries. Over time, they gradually relax and bond over shared experiences, leading to blurred lines between friendship and something deeper.

Notes:

I made this account about a decade ago to write CSI fanfic, but then I didn't. In fact, I never wrote anything. But after watching Top Gun: Maverick last year, I got obsessed with Rooster and Phoenix as a pair. I started writing in my head again. So, to start off, a short fic. These are more snippets of the timeline from friendship to more. I hope you enjoy!

Warning: no beta. I might go back later myself to re-read and edit. Also, English is not my first language. I'm also still struggling with formatting here.

Work Text:

The sun was setting over the San Diego skyline, casting long shadows over the naval base. The afterglow of a rigorous training day still hung in the air as pilots wrapped up their routines and headed back to their quarters. Among them were two of Top Gun's finest: Natasha "Phoenix" Trace and Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw.

Phoenix and Rooster had a history that was a tangled mix of camaraderie, a little bit of rivalry and something unspoken. They had been through the wringer together, from the skies over enemy territory to the intense debriefings back on solid ground. Despite the competitive edge between them, there was a bond forged in the heat of battle, nights singing and dancing in bars and evenings watching the sun set together. They truly were best friends.

But now, grounded for a few days due to maintenance on their jets, they found themselves sharing quarters — an arrangement neither had anticipated but got into due to Halo shagging Payback and calling in a favor with Phoenix. Making them change rooms. What they wouldn’t do for their team members.

Phoenix dropped her duffel bag onto the floor with a heavy thud, glancing around the sparsely decorated room. "So, looks like we're stuck with each other," she said, her tone laced with equal parts amusement and annoyance. She loved Rooster and all his bravado, but his care-free personality sometimes clashed with her type A one. She needed her peace at the end of the day.

Rooster, leaning against the doorframe with his signature cocky grin, shrugged. "Could be worse. At least I don't snore."

Phoenix rolled her eyes and began unpacking her things, trying to ignore the way Rooster's eyes seemed to follow her every move. "Let's set some ground rules," she started. "No touching my stuff, no unsolicited advice, and absolutely no funny business."

Rooster raised an eyebrow, his smirk widening. "Define 'funny business.'"

"You know exactly what I mean, Bradshaw," she shot back, turning to face him with a challenging look. A typical stare Rooster knew all-too-well.

"Alright, alright," Rooster laughed, raising his hands in mock surrender. "I’ll be on my best behavior. Scout’s honor."

Phoenix shook her head, a small smile playing on her lips despite herself. "Yeah, we'll see about that."

The first night was awkward, to say the least. Phoenix tried to focus on her book, but the close quarters and Rooster’s casual presence were distracting. Rooster, on the other hand, seemed completely at ease, sprawled on his bed, humming a tune under his breath.

“Can you stop that?” Phoenix snapped, looking up from her book.

Rooster glanced over at her, his expression innocent. “Stop what?”

“Humming. It’s annoying.”

He chuckled and stopped, but the silence that followed was somehow even more distracting. After a few minutes, he spoke again. “You know, you could join me for a drink. Might help you relax.”

Phoenix glanced at him, considering. “One drink. And no funny business,” she reiterated.
Rooster grinned. “Scout’s honor.”

They sat on the small balcony, the night air cool against their skin. The conversation flowed easier than Phoenix expected, the tension between them easing with each sip of whiskey. Stories from their training days, shared memories of dogfights and near-misses, laughter over their fellow pilots’ antics — it all felt surprisingly... comfortable. Maybe this wasn’t too bad.

Days turned into nights, and lines began to blur. Phoenix found herself laughing more, relaxing in Rooster’s company in a way she hadn’t anticipated. They cooked meals together, argued over movie choices, and even managed to squeeze in a few practice flights in the simulator. The typical stuff their friendship consisted off. But the way they cuddled up during the movies, fed each other a taste of the food they made and lost all regard for personal space was new.

One night, after a particularly intense argument over tactics, the air between them was charged. Phoenix glared at Rooster, her chest heaving with frustration. “You’re such a stubborn ass, Bradshaw!”

Rooster stepped closer, his eyes locking onto hers. “And you’re a control freak, Trace!”

Their faces were inches apart, the heat of the moment crackling around them. Before she knew what was happening, Phoenix found herself grabbing Rooster by the collar, pulling him into a fierce, demanding kiss. It was explosive, a clash of wills and desires, all the tension between them igniting in a blaze of passion.

They broke apart, both breathing hard, staring at each other in shock.

“That... that was...,” Phoenix started, at a loss for words.

“Unexpected,” Rooster finished, his voice husky. “But not unwelcome.”

Phoenix swallowed hard, her mind racing. “This changes nothing,” she insisted, her voice steadier than she felt.

Rooster nodded slowly. “Agreed. But it’s definitely not funny business.”

The days that followed were a whirlwind of stolen glances, heated arguments, and even hotter make-up sessions. Their rivalry fueled their passion, each encounter a battle of wills that neither was willing to lose. They challenged each other in every way, pushing boundaries, testing limits.

One night, after a particularly intense flight simulation, they found themselves tangled in each other’s arms, the line between combat and passion blurring once more. Phoenix’s hands roamed over Rooster’s body, tracing the lines of muscle and scar, feeling the heat of his skin against hers.
“God, you drive me crazy,” she murmured against his lips.

Rooster’s response was a low growl, his hands tightening around her waist. “Feeling’s mutual, Trace.”

Their nights were filled with whispered confessions and shared vulnerabilities, moments of raw honesty that left them both breathless. They were two sides of the same coin, their strengths and weaknesses complementing each other in ways they hadn’t anticipated.

As their time sharing quarters drew to a close, Phoenix and Rooster found themselves facing a new challenge: navigating the complex emotions that had developed between them. They were still friends and colleagues, still fiercely competitive, but there was something deeper now, a connection that went beyond the superficial.

One evening, as they sat on the balcony watching the sunset, Phoenix broke the comfortable silence. “What happens when we go back to our regular routines?” she asked quietly.

Rooster looked at her, his expression serious. “We keep flying. Together. Whatever this is, we don’t let it get in the way of what we do up there.”

Phoenix nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips. “Agreed. But maybe... we don’t have to go back to separate quarters.”

Rooster’s eyes lit up with a mixture of surprise and hope. “You suggesting we become permanent roommates, Trace?”

Phoenix laughed softly. “Something like that. If you can handle it.”

Rooster’s grin was all the answer she needed. “Oh, I can handle it. Question is, can you?”

Phoenix leaned in, her lips brushing against his in a soft, lingering kiss. “Guess we’ll find out.”

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Phoenix and Rooster sat together, their futures uncertain but their hearts aligned. In the burning skies above and the quiet moments below, they had found something unexpected, something worth fighting for.

And as they faced whatever came next, they knew one thing for sure: they were better together, both in the cockpit and out.

The next few months were a blur of missions and moments stolen between flights. Phoenix and Rooster continued to challenge each other, pushing their limits both in the air and on the ground. Their relationship, born from rivalry and forged in passion, grew stronger with each passing day.
One evening, as they lay tangled together on their last night before Phoenix would be sent out, Rooster turned to Phoenix, his expression thoughtful. “You ever think about what comes next? Beyond Top Gun, beyond the Navy?”

Phoenix considered his question, her fingers tracing patterns on his chest. “I used to. But now…” she hummed “I think I’m right where I need to be. With you.”

Rooster’s smile was slow, genuine. “Same here, Trace. Same here.”

They fell into a comfortable silence, the future uncertain but no longer daunting. Together, they were unstoppable, a force to be reckoned with in the skies and on the ground.

And as they faced whatever challenges lay ahead, they knew one thing for certain: they were more than just teammates, more than just friends. They were partners, in every sense of the word.

And they were ready to soar, together.
