The soft glow of the early morning sun filled their bedroom in a warm, golden light. The digital clock on the nightstand read 6:20 AM. Carmy murmured sleepily, feeling the warmth of a body pressed against his. He opened his eyes to look at his wife on top of him, her arms wrapped around his neck, her legs tangled with his under the covers. Her head rested on his shoulder, and her soft snores created a comforting rhythm that had become a familiar part of his early mornings. He sighed, gently kissing her forehead. It was going to be one of those days again.
With a smile, he began to sit up, but Sydney tightened her grip. "Don't go," she mumbled, not quite awake. Carmy chuckled against her soft skin "Alright, baby," he said, deciding to play along. He slowly lifted her, her eyes fluttering open in surprise, and she looked up at him with a sleepy smile.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"We need to get up,” he replied, trying to keep his balance as she clung to him, her legs wrapping around him. "But I can't, you're like a cat who's found a warm spot." Her eyes grew wide, and she tightened her hold. Carmy’s heart swelled with love. Five years of being married to Syd, to waking up with the weight of her body on him and he would never get tired of it
“We could have stayed in bed for five more minutes, Carmy.” Sydney closed her eyes and rested her head back on his shoulder. He carried her to their bathroom and gently placed her on the counter next to the sink. Sydney did not let go of Carmy. He grabbed her toothbrush and squeezed a dollop of toothpaste onto the bristles. He held the toothbrush to her mouth and she took it. He repeated the action with his own toothbrush. They brushed their teeth together in a dance of domesticity. Her legs were still wrapped around him while his free hand was resting on her hip, keeping her close.
When they were done, Carmy could not stop himself and leaned in to kiss her. It started as a slow, gentle brush of their lips that quickly turned into something more. Her arms and legs were tight around him, her whole body melted into his. The kiss grew deeper, hungrier. “Are you sure we can't go back to bed, Carm?” Sydney asked between kisses. “Please,” she whined. Carmy groaned. He hated telling his wife no, Carmy wanted nothing more than to carry her back to their bed and stay there with her all day, but they had a busy day ahead of them.
He pulled away from her and it took all his willpower to not give in when he looked at her big, brown doe eyes and adorable pout.
“Baby, we have a long day ahead of us,” he kissed her again, his lip traveling from her jaw all the way to her ear. “But I promise I’ll make it up to you.” He gently bit her earlobe making her tremble in his arms.
Sydney sighed, her eyes dropping to the floor before she nodded. He could see the disappointment in her posture, the way her shoulders slumped slightly. But she knew he was right.
Carmy carried her back to their bedroom, his left arm supporting her as he gathered his and her clothes with his free hand. He laid her on the bed, her eyes never living his and he carefully maneuvered her into her clothes. Her arms raised obediently as he slid her shirt over her head, his fingers brushing against her soft skin. She watched him with a playful smile and then bit her lip. She fought hard to keep her clothes on and not tear them and his off to pounce on him.
Once he finished dressing her, he turned his attention to himself, pulling his own clothes with swift, practiced movement. Sydney wasted no time in attaching herself to Carmy once he was done. Her arms circled his torso and her legs wrapped around his waist. Her nose buried in his neck, inhaling the scent of him that drove her crazy.
“You look so handsome.” she said, her voice warm and sultry.
“And you look beautiful,” he replied, kissing her forehead. He knew she was trying to distract him, to coax him back into bed, but they had a full day ahead of them that they could not afford to miss.
“You hungry, baby? He asked her.
Sydney nodded. “You know we are.”
Carmy carried her out of their bedroom to the kitchen, her body fitting perfectly against his. She sighed contentedly, her head resting on his shoulder as they moved through their apartment.
The warmth of her breath tickled his neck, and he felt a smile spread across his face. He was happy to provide the warmth and security she needed.
He set her down on the kitchen counter, with a pout and disappointment on her face, she finally let go of him. He bit her lip to not laugh at her antics and served her water for her to drink while he quickly put their breakfast together. Their kitchen was small enough to not move too far away from her. Carmy made a mental note to start looking for a bigger place because they were going to need it soon. He made them vegetable omelets, it was one of the few meals that didn't make her sprint to the bathroom to puke and he was thankful for that.
He took their plates to their small dining table and then came back for her. He lifted her and walked to the dining table and sat down with Sydney on his lap. He fixed their plates in front of them and grabbed her fork, picking some of her omelet with it.
“Open up,” he said with a playful smile.
Sydney’s eyes widened in surprise before she opened her mouth, allowing him to feed her a bite of the fluffy omelet. The taste was heavenly, the egg and cheese melding together perfectly. She chewed slowly, savoring the flavor, her eyes never leaving his. While Sydney still couldn't believe Carmy went from making the best meal she ever had, to feeding her everyday, Carmy couldn't believe he could ever be like this with anyone. But Sydney had changed everything the moment she walked into The Beef all those years ago.
The silence between them was comfortable, a testament to their deep connection. They didn't need words to communicate; their bodies, their gestures, their very breaths spoke volumes. He could see the amusement in her gaze, the way her eyes danced with mischief as she anticipated his next move.
But he let her eat on her own and focused on finishing his own breakfast. They finished their food in silence, Carmy could tell Sydney had something on her mind, but he waited patiently for when she was ready to share. But he didn't have to wait long.
“Pretty soon you won’t be able to carry me anymore,” she said with a hint of sadness.
He looked down at her still-flat stomach. They had only found out about the baby a few days ago, but already it felt like their entire world had shifted on its axis. “Everything is going to change,” he murmured.
Sydney’s eyes searched his, looking for reassurance. She was over the moon when she found out she was pregnant, but fear had been her shadow, a constant reminder of the motherly figure she never had. With her own mother passing away when she was four, leaving a void that no one else had ever quite filled. She worried about making mistakes, about not knowing how to be the mother she’d always dreamed of having.
His grip on her tightened, and she rested her head on his shoulder. He could feel the tension in her body begin to melt away as he rubbed her back in slow, soothing circles.
“You are going to be the most amazing mother, baby.” He whispered the words she needed to hear.
“But I don't know how to do this,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “What if I mess up?”
“You won’t mess up,” Carmy kissed her forehead.” I don’t know anything about being a father, but we will learn together. We’ll figure it out”
She pulled back to look at his eyes, her own shining with unshed tears. “Thank you,”she whispered.”For loving me, even when I’m like this.”
He cupped her cheeks in his hands, his thumb caressing her face. “You're my everything, Sydney. You know that.”
Her eyes searched his, looking for any hint of annoyance or frustration. But all she found was love, a deep, unyielding love that made her heart race. “I know,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “But sometimes, I’m afraid I’m too much.”
He leaned in and kissed her, “You are never too much,” he murmured against her lips. “You are just right for me, baby”
They kissed until the sound of Sydney’s phone in their bedroom reminded them that they had to leave for Sydney’s doctor’s appointment soon. Sydney groaned knowing she was going to have to get off her husband and start using her own legs again.
“Are you sure you can’t carry me all the way to the doctor’s?” she stood up, stretching her legs. Carmy chuckled as he went to grab his stuff and her bag. “This sucks,” She grumbled. “You suck,” she told him when he came back.
"You'll live, baby” He kissed her pout. “Come on,” he said, tugging her gently toward the door “We’ve got a doctor to see, and then maybe we can go grab that ice cream you said you were craving in your sleep?”
The promise of ice cream brought a smile to her face. “Deal,” she said, allowing him to lead her out of her apartment.
