Armand tilts his head to the side. At this angle, hovering half-above Daniel, his face and body are all shadowed except those eyes. The smudges on Daniel’s glasses turn the overhead light into a horrifying, multifractal corona.
It’s beautiful. If he makes it out of here alive, Daniel ought to launch a research project—see how many of those medieval monks, painting angels with gold-flake halos, making saints out of corpses and killers, were simply seeing their salvation in the blood-draped monsters who stayed so close at hand, whispering to kings and snacking on courtiers.

“What?” Daniel says, because he’s never been able to resist tempting fate. That, at least, hasn’t changed since the seventies. “Is my talking distracting you from the sound of your collapsing marriage? Sorry, your collapsed marriage.”
Armand makes a noise that’s half-snarl, half-scream—pure animalic rage, too sonorous and sharp to be human—and punches his fist into the floor.
(“Daniel Molloy,” Armand says, with a distant sort of haze that immediately puts Daniel on guard. “My—”
And then—instead of carving his nails into Daniel’s flesh or ripping his throat (the rest of the way) open or plunging a hand into Daniel’s chest to tear his heart out wholecloth—Armand curls up into a desperate ball and sobs.
His forehead presses into Daniel’s brittle collarbone hard enough to hurt, and his hands fall leadenly to Daniel’s jacket. He clings like a man drowning, and he cries.)
