Summary
He laughs it off. It’s all wrong, laughter high in his ears, tinny and a farce as he laughs laughs laughs, he’s so tired. He pulls away sooner than he does usually, and Regulus blinks in surprise. James pulls a smile, all wrong, all twisted and far on his face and he’s so tired, ha ha, he’s all boastful and strong with an ego the size of an inflated balloon but he thinks it’s popped at some point. It’s drowning in a river even. It’s muddy and tossed around and swamped with water, drowning it, pulling it under the currents and James is tired.
“Potter?”
The gentle tone hurts, it hurts and James wants it, wants it like the air he breathes, like the wind against his face when he’s in the forest, the scent of the meadow, but he can’t have it. His ego is bruised and bloody, and he cradles it softly in his hands as he lets people kick at it and stomp all over it. He’s so tired of it, he misses his mom, soft hands in his hair as she brushes it, softer words as she mumbles about her sweet boy, her lovely boy. James misses it. He’s surrounded by love and affection from his friends, everybody, but why does it hurt?
