Work Text:
There once, The Sun and The Moon decided to get married.
“We’re engaged now.”
Missa announced the last night they saw each other.
The night above looked delightful, with the moon shining so ever gently among the stars; and under it, Missa and Bad were lying down on the grass next to each other. It was the same routine they had followed for a time now, and yet, fairly different, because Missa's eyes were not looking at him, they were lost in some point of the night sky with lips curled up in a smile of happiness.
Genuine happiness. The kind of happiness that flutters from inside your chest and makes you feel warm and nice, one that you can hide.
And the reason was already told, obvious even.
Because they’ve been together for a long time, dancing around and chasing each other since the dinosaurs walked on earth,
Bad almost wanted to laugh at how stupid he felt. From the very moment Missa appeared that night at his door, looking oddly unquiet, he knew what happened; perhaps even before that, he must've been blind to not notice the lately overjoyed look on Missa's face and the new piece of jewelry in Philza's hand. But he told himself it was just his mind, that it didn't mean anything.
But, of course, it meant everything.
The demon swallowed, smiling as he looked at his friend, trying to simulate some kind of happiness for him, one he deserved, “Congratulations, Missa. When's the wedding?”
“Next week,” Missa answered, softly, as his fingers fidgeted with his sleeve, “It’s not going to be a big deal y’know? Just close friends.”
Bad hummed in understanding, Missa didn't say anything else, and night became a little more obscure.
It shouldn't be awkward at all. Bad should be happy for Missa, and Missa should be too absorbed in his own happiness to notice Bad didn't share the feeling; and then they could chat about all the wedding details Missa was excited to spit and Bad was excited to hear. It was something so special for Missa and Bad still couldn't fake enough to not notice Missa clenching his hand to his pants and not be too aware of the little engagement ring in Missa's finger glimmering in the moonlight. His heart ached a bit.
The demon always expected this thing they both had to end at some point. He just didn't expect to be too attached to it, that it would actually hurt; they both have been doing this for a few months by now, the memories of how it started were fuzzy, they could, as well, been doing this since the beginning of time by how natural it felt.
MissaSinfonia and Badboyhalo didn't know each other as well as they, perhaps, did with other islanders, or they weren't as close; Missa would spend the day with his children, Philza, messing with Roier, and Bad would spend it with his own children and Richas, teasing Foolish, casually chatting with other islanders. Yet, at night, they still were lying down in the grass, in some spot close to Bad's house; only the two of them, eyes looking at each other as if every story had been already told.
The entire galaxy celebrated in jubilation, unaware of the only being that didn't share the same feeling.
It felt only right , only the night being witness of their rendezvouses, it felt like they belonged together, no need to exchange words, just enjoying each other's company until dawn.
But then again, Missa didn't actually belong with him.
“That's why I came, actually,” Missa spoked again, laughing with the breeze,“I– we wanted you to be there.”
Bad blinked.
“Oh.”
Of course. Made sense.
They stared at each other, and his chest felt heavier as he saw Missa with a, oh, so apologetic look on his eyes, that he didn't know when he learnt to recognize, had he done this before? His teeth greeted, not with anger, just impotence; this felt unfair, cruel even.
Was it not cruel that Missa didn't want Bad as much as Bad did? It felt like it, Missa stared at him in an adoring way, because he held affection for Bad, but that way wasn't the way Missa stared at Philza; Bad was a very observant person, he learned to be, and he noticed the few times Philza and Missa were together, there was something deeply intimate about the way they exchanged looks, laughed at the same time like if they hearts were synchronized, about the way Missa unconsciously looked for Philza's warm any time they were close and Philza seeked for Missa's eyes any time they were far. They chased each other, it was natural for them to be somehow attracted to each other.
Was it not cruel that Missa came here just to invite him to his wedding? He should have denied the invitation with a false excuse on his sleeve, got up and said ‘goodnight moon’.
The Night didn't spat a word, but in his heart the resentment grew. No one knew the secret that he was so eager to not tell,
Was it not cruel that Missa, with the stars above him and under the moonlight, looked so angelical, so lovely, that even if he could’ve refused the invitation he would’ve stayed all night just looking at him?
It certainly felt like it.
“I would love to.” Bad lied.
“...Cool,” Missa said with a relieved smile, hands resting on his chest as his eyes shifted to see the night sky. “uh, Philza already invited Foolish so you can go with–”
“Wait–” Bad interrupted, turning his head towards Missa, looking at him with a totally outraged look in his eyes. “You invited Foolish before me?”
Missa blinked. A smile threatened to spread in his face as he spoke, “no…”
“Who else you'd invited before me?”
Bad looked at him with arms crossed with a sharply look that made Missa snort. Missa smirked as he gestured vaguely in the air, “i already told you, just close people, like Roier, Tubbo…Quackity.”
“What the fudge!? Quackity got invited before me, I can't believe this!” The demon said dramatically, with hands pressed against his face as Missa bursted into laughter. “Oh my goodness, I feel lightheaded.”
“But he's my friend!” he said between laughs.
“ And your ex as far as I know, Mr. Sinfonía.”
“Oh, I'm Mr. Sinfonía now Mr. GoodBoyHalo?”
Bad's hands were carefully taken out of his face and his heart almost dropped when he saw Missa's face above him, strands of black hair flowed with the wind and a sweet smile that wrinkled the corner of his almond eyes and made them look like half-moons. Bad opened his mouth to try to say something, but closed it immediately as he felt Missa's finger carefully tracing stars on the back of his hand, his touch was so soft in Bad's skin, made the two cold skins warm as well as it caused Bad's face to burn as his eyes falled unconsciously to Missa's lips.
The demon fake coughed, carefully pulling his hand out of Missa's and looking away.
“Yes! because you invited Foolish before me and even dared to suggest that I go with him?” He shook his head in disapproval and said with a fake hurted voice, “I thought you knew me better.”
“Come on, man.” Missa smiled and rolled his eyes, “It can't be that bad.”
Bad was tempted to say anything to refute it, but instead decided to just let it be, eyes quickly shifting to the sky, wanting to just contemplate the moon a little longer. “The moon is beautiful.”
A quiet admission, a whispered secret that the wind took with it and that did not require a response. And still, Missa after a few moments nodded in agreement, “Have you ever told your secrets to the moon?” He asked thoughtfully, words got out of his mouth softly as he turned his head up to see the night sky.
“I prefer to keep them to myself.”
Missa hummed melodically. “What a shame, he is a good listener.”
“My moon, after all we have been through, it is possible for me to not love you?” The Night whispered in a mournful declaration.
For the rest of the night, no more words were spoken, just them silently observing the night sky, next to each other, and it felt right.
It was one of those nights that should have lasted a little longer, just them, like they were the only thing in the world until it was too late and the sun was about to rise. His only regret was not stopping Missa when he got up with a groan and said ‘goodbye' waving his hand at him and disappearing in the distance.
The moon was still a little visible when Bad took courage and said, in a desperate attempt to keep him a little longer “I love you.” he threw all his feelings to the moon until he was no longer visible, clenching to the hope that he could make things last a little longer. But it was too late, The Moon already found his way to rest and The Sun took his place.
That day he went to his house, feeling his legs too heavy. He told Dapper 'I feel too exhausted’ and slept all day. Questions in his mind, wondering what would have happened if he didn't fall in love with the impossible, if his moon hadn't already promised his heart to someone else; and dreamed with phantom kisses, stars traced in his cheeks and hair being softly brushed against cold hands. Memories of a night that will never happen.
“But Night, is it possible for me to love you when all we share is the resting of humanity?” The Moon answered in a soft breath.
Bad took a deep breath.
“Congratulations Philza. I'm so happy for you.”
He said without hesitation, extending his hand to shake Philza's.
The days passed quickly, as usual. Bad made the decision to move on, he focused on other things and spent most of his time with his children, as usual; it helped a lot not seeing Missa anywhere, just casually stumbling upon Philza a few times. It was perfectly fine.
Until Foolish appeared on his door, ready to go, and Bad suddenly remembered today was the wedding.
Foolish was not patient at all, the demon was too hesitant to show up to the wedding and after some back and forth the totem became too exasperated and lifted him up from the floor, put him over his shoulder and left the house, ignoring all complain and mumbling something about him ‘not ruining his script‘.
They arrived quickly, Philza – hair tied, white dressed with gold and green details, as well as a gold earring. – welcomed them with open arms and a cheerful smile.
“Thanks mate! I'm glad you could make it, it means a lot.” Philza said, shaking his hand, “we didn't know if you would come but Missa didn't want to press you.”
Bad frowned in confusion, and opened his mouth to ask, but Philza was quick to jump to talk with Foolish, about something he didn't pay too much attention to, while guiding them through the valley of roses to a marmol roundabout covered in rose vines, where he noticed a few people inside; he awkwardly followed them in silence, tail between his legs while Philza's words still floated in his mind. What did he mean with that? As far as he knew he confirmed his assistance. He shook his head and observed the few people that were there; they valley had crystal-clear ponds, with birds still singing and the sun shining bright in the sky; inside the only structure nearby, he could spot Fit chatting with both Tubbo and Niki – though Niki was paying more attention to something that Chayanne was showing to her. –, as well as he noticed Roier and Quackity talking – yelling. – and laughing.
His shoulders almost relaxed in relief when Roier noticed them and waved at him to get close, with a ‘¡hey culero!’ that he clearly didn't let pass.
He got close to them, Roier greeted with a big smile wrapping an arm around him, Quackity, unlike him, just nodded him in acknowledgement, his previous energy decreasing significantly.
“¡Bad! ¡Viniste! I’m glad you decided to touch grass, man.” Roier said, teasingly.
Bad giggled at the joke, “Why wouldn't i?”
“Hazte wey.” Quackity joined the conversation, laughing about his own words and the confusion in Bad's face.
The demon looked at Roier for an answer, half-confused about the translation of that sentence, flinching when Roier gave Quackity a hit on the arm; Quackity groaned. “Don't listen to him, man. He becomes very pendejo at weddings, y’know?” Roier said, laughing it off.
“That's not true!”
“ thit’s nit trii , it is true culero!”
Roier and Quackity started an argument that quickly passed at them just laughing about things Bad didn't completely understood because of language barrier, but he didn't mind; and he chose to just not insist on what Quackity said; it was actually nice to stand next to Roier and Quackity just for a moment, it allowed him to be distracted, his mind was a complete mess this days. He has been pretty aware of the way he felt absent in certain moments when he spent too much time thinking, how his tail moved anxiously when Tallulah casually told him something about his fathers, even when he tried to pretend everything was fine, it felt like something was missing. But Roier and Quackity's laughs were contagious enough to him.
Until the laughs stopped, Roier said “oye we, ahorita vengo.” and left going next to Tubbo; Quackity's demeanor drastically changed, smile decreased as his eyes stared empty at the place where Roier previously stood.
“Nice wedding, huh?” Quackity asked after a moment of silence, leaning on the railing.
Bad eyes stared at the place, contemplative, “It's… pretty, indeed.” he answered, the words rolling as empty as the way Quackity's eyes stared at the floor.
Quackity shifted his eyes at him and smirked sardonically, “No te hagas, chico malo.” he said, an accusatory finger pointing at him. “Ya vi que le hiciste ojitos al Missa, i’m not blind.”
The words startled Bad, who quickly looked around making sure nobody else heard what Quackity just said; fortunately, they were enough aparted for no one else to hear them unless they yelled. He looked back at Quackity and cleared his throat
“Though I appreciate your great imagination, I don't think it's appropriate to say that at Missa's wedding.” Bad scolded and Quackity snorted.
“ C’mon , everytime you're next to him you look like you'll hung the moon and stars for him or something.” He said, rolling his eyes with a subtle annoyed expression, “So tell me, between you and me, why are you even here? You don't seem the type who would ruin a wedding by stealing the groom; though that will be interesting.” Quackity continued his chatter, being just politely heard by Bad, who was careful of keeping his face with a neutral expresión – God forbid him from strangling Quackity –, “ah, or maybe I'm just making things up, maybe you really don't love him.”
Bad snapped. What a stupid , ridiculous assumption, if he didn't hold that kind of affection for Missa, then what was all that? What would he feel so empty if he didn't– Quackity looked at him unimpressed as he faced him, making his shoulders fall in defeat, “Something tracked?”
“I don't know Quackity, maybe you're just projecting.”
Both maintained eye contact, something like understanding and empathy glimmered in Quackity's eyes that quickly disappeared when they broke eye contact.
“whatever helps you sleep at night, pal.” Quackity said, shrugging.
Neither of them spoke again.
Not even when Roier came back.
Maybe you just don't really love him. Those words stayed on his mind for more time that he would have liked; Didn't he? He knew love, every kind of love, and he knew what he felt for Missa was a little more than a crush, but if being completely honest, he also felt fairly confused when he thought too deep about it, overwhelmed even; he wasn't afraid of rejection, that was a sure thing, rejection was as natural as lost; but he could handle one thing better than the other.
His eyes fixed on Philza, he was looking at the distance with well-disguised impatience, but the air of happiness that he seemed to exude didn't flicker, not at second. Philza and Missa had the day and the night, constantly chasing each other, meant to find only the traces of the other, see a shadow of the other, rarely finding themselves together; maybe that's why they worked well together; and when they found themselves together it was joyful event not only for them, they were simply meant to be.
Bad took a deep breath, and with a shaky hand took out his intercom from his pocket.
It was a surprise when it vibrated in his hands, eyes wide as he saw the message on screen.
[Priv] MissaSinf > BadBoyhalo: Me haces un favor?
[Priv] BadBoyHalo > MissaSinf: I was about to ask you for one too :0
With the sun almost setting, Missa arrived next to Tallulah; black-dressed with a silver headpiece with star details, and Bad, under everyone's gaze walked towards Missa, offering his arm when he was next to him, lips curled up in a soft smile.
“You look nice.” Bad complimented and Missa happily accepted his arm.
“Thank you.” Missa said in a whisper as they started to walk over the orange carpet to the roundabout, Tallulah walking ahead throwing rose petals in it. “Also, thanks for… this, I felt very nervous and I just needed this.”
Bad giggled and nodded in understanding. “That makes two of us.”
And with the sky turning golden, arms crossed and their hearts pumping fast, the both walked together towards the roundabout; Philza looked as they approached with hardly contained joy and eyes shining when he put them on his platonic fiancé. The crow stepped down, extending a hand to Missa as he approached, who carefully pulled his arm of Bad's and grabbed Philza's hand.
The Sun shunned in happiness as he waited for his betrothed, everyone who was close to him assisted to the joyful event and awaited with crippling excitement; The Moon appeared with The Night, who accompanied him to the altar, handing him to the arms of his beloved Sun, watching as they encountered each other with joy in their eyes.
“Ready?” He heard Philza ask in a murmur.
“As I'll ever be.” Missa replied with a wide smile in his face.
And surprisingly, Bad didn't feel too awful.
They climbed the steps together and stood up in a flower circle carefully placed in the ground, holding each other's hands with gentleness and care. Bad was quick to get to his own place next to Quackity, as he saw both Roier and Fit stand outside the flower circle, next to Missa and Philza, Roier smiling at Missa and Fit standing with chest puffed in pride.
Quackity's eyes flicked at him, obvious confusion in them. Bad shrugged.
Foolish stood in front of Missa and Philza, clearing his throat and starting the ceremony. “Dear friends, family… and Bad…”
“What the–”
“We're gathered here today to witness and celebrate the union of Philza and Missa in marriage. Through their time together, they have come to a deeper understanding of each other and of their relationship, and have decided to live their lives now on as platonic husbands.” Foolish declared, making the smiles in their faces wider. “As we create this marriage, we also create a new bond, a new sense of family, a new meaning of soulmates and a new understanding of love; one that I hope continues to give great joy to you and those you care for.”
The vows were told in what seemed like a breath and accepted with no hesitation, both caressing each other's hands and no breaking eye contact as Philza accepted his vows and Missa pronounced his in a shaky breath:
“I'm grateful to be by your side, a part of your family and your life. And I promise from this day that I'll cherish every moment life and death give us together.”
Vows of devotion were told, and they exchanged rings under the sunset, hearing as with great joy Foolish said: “and now by the power vested in me by the QSMP census bureau, I pronounce you married!... You may kiss or hug, whatever suits you best.”
They looked at each other and whispered words of complicity and devotion that were sealed with a hug. Everyone clapped and went to join their celebration, giving their congratulations as the sky turned in a mix of orange and purple tones.
“You have not fooled me!” A prideful Star said in an accusatory tone, “You love The Moon, you always had selfishly reserved him only for you, what changed now?”
Bad walked away next to Quackity, eyes on the ground, being careful of not stepping in any rose, “I love him, but he doesn't love me back, I'm afraid he'll probably never will. We're simply not meant to be.” he explained, Quackity’s eyes looking at him with sympathy. “I thought I would feel better if I just faced it.”
“I'm not his Sun and he's not my Day,” The Night lamented softly, “but it's okay, he'll be happier this way.”
“Do you?”
Bad’s eyes flicked to both Missa and Philza, who were still happily hugging with wide smiles on their faces next to Tallulah and Chayanne, “A little.”
Quackity looked at them and nodded, putting a reassuring hand on his shoulder “Do you want to go for drinks? My treat.”
Now Sun and Moon dance together, around little playful stars, two hearts becoming one; as The Death smiles and roses happily begin to bloom.
An eternal eclipse now to contemplate .
