The moon didn’t bother them at all

Summary:

A failed prank on Pearl turns into a Boatem sleepover.

Notes:

Based on the headcanon that avians fall asleep if they have a blanket over them.

Work Text:

The moon shined brightly through the windows of Pearl’s starter base, illuminating the room, and displaying the figures of Grian, Scar, Mumbo, and Impulse standing frozen in place in front of her accusing gaze.

“What on earth are you four doing unannounced in my bedroom at this time in the evening?”

“Ask these three, I was following them.” Impulse hastily clarified.

Pearl stared at the other three.

“Pearl,” Grian stepped forward, “I thought I saw you flying towards Gem’s place for dinner?”

“You thought wrong.” Pearl’s gaze narrowed “Are you setting up a prank right now?”

“No never.” Grian’s response was quick.

“That would be ridiculous.” Mumbo agreed.

“Absolutely not, this bedroom is as trap free as our intentions were innocent!” Scar assured her, making a show of gesturing towards her doorway, attempting to lead her gaze away from Grian, who was sneaking over to her bed with TNT in his hands.

“Oh no you don’t!”

Pearl quickly grabbed the blanket from the top of her bed, and threw it over him, causing him to fall over, onto the floor, with a surprised “oh!”

The other three ran over as Pearl was retrieving her blanket, and throwing it back onto her bed.

“Is he asleep?” Scar asked, confused, because sure enough, Grian appeared to have fallen asleep.

“It’s an avian thing.” Pearl’s moth antennas bobbed up and down as she nodded her head, grinning. “We discovered it when we were kids.”

There was a moment of silence, before Scar slowly tiptoed over to the sleeping avian, and laid down on the floor as well, wrapping an arm around him.

“What are you doing?” Pearl started to speak, as Mumbo walked over and laid down on the other side of Grian, and Impulse wandered over to join them too.

Pearl sighed, giving in “Fine.”

Soon all members of Boatem were on the floor of Pearl’s base, with Pearl being the only one left awake by the time Grian blinked one eye open to stare at her accusingly.

“Pearl,” he said, annoyed, “why are we sleeping on the floor?”

“You sleep on the floor all the time!”

“A nest is different.” He hissed at her.

Pearl laughed quietly, so as not to wake the others, as he sleepily got up and wandered over to her pile of blankets, bringing some over, and starting to lay them out in a circle, surrounding the group, before lying back down in his previous position, satisfied at his makeshift nest.

“Because all these blankets surrounding us are totally going to make a difference to how uncomfortable the floor is.” Pearl stated, sarcastically, to her brother, before noticing that he was already asleep, his avian instincts telling him that he was safe with a nest and his flock.

At least they all got to sleep that night, and the moon didn’t bother them at all.
