Chapter 1: Not in Kansas anymore

Notes:

Welp. Didn't think this would happen, but. Here we are.

My first ever work... A crossover with a premise suggested by one of my friends on Discord. And it's between a popular gaming franchise and a series that started out as flash game.

I... Don't think I have anything else to say. Oh! Right, the Disclamer *ahem*

Chapter Text

In a corner of Japan, there lies a land where fantasy comes true and forgotten myths live protected from humanity's disbelief in the supernatural by a barrier that separates fantasy and reality. This fantastical land is know... As Gensokyo.

Now, Gensokyo seems like a typical fantasy world from an outsider's point of view, but it also has some... dangers as well; yokais that eats the flesh of humans, a hill where parents abandoned their own children to die by its poisonous flowers and wandering yokais, and a bamboo forest where people can get lost as easily as grabbing an empty cup.

In addition to its atmosphere and dangers, Gensokyo has a wide variety of locations; a mountain home to kappas and tengus, a forest where magic fills the air and a deadly corner where no man nor maiden dared set foot. Muenzuka, home to cherry blossom trees, deadly spider lillies and various monsters and yokais. It is here however, that we have a peculiar sight. Well, peculiar for residents of Gensokyo that is. You see, Gensokyo is in a technological stasis and any modern technologies often comes from the outside world and even then it is often someting old by the outside world's standards.

This sight is that of a PC monitor, its screen black as a moonless night. Suddenly electricity sputters out of it and its screen begins to glitch, creating some sort of images in the process. Then it erupts with a bright explosion.

There, laying on the cold ground, unconscious, was a blonde-headed male, wearing a pirate's hat and baggy worn clothing. On his back is an ornate sword with a shining white blade with two curved points at the base, four smaller points along its length as it tapers towards the tip, and diamond-like red markings in its center. its handle being a dark red color with a golden point, and guard bear two gems and several small wing designs.

This is our protagonist of the story; Matt.

Matt groggily wakes up like he has a bad hangover which considering how much he drinks beer wouldn't be surprising in certain contexts.

"Man... That's gonna be the last time I'm touching some strange colorful crystal all willy nilly." Matt tiredly said.

He then spends a few minutes gathering his senses before glancing around him and what he saw filled him with confusion.

"This... doesn't look like an area that I'm familar with." Matt said with unease in voice, his right hand on the ornate sword, Heaven's Gate as it's called. "This type of situation is typically followed by an ambush."

Matt stands still, his guard up in case any foes comes to pick a fight with him.

But there were none.

After making sure there wasn't going to be any ambushs, Matt release his grip on Heaven's Gate and look around him more carefully.

"This place doesn't seem like anything I'm familar with. This can't be Ashwood Forest because I'm sure it has a river of lave not water." Matt thought to himself, then he has a thought that fills him with a slight sense of dread. "Oh no... Don't tell me I'm in some sort of isekai story!"

Matt calm himself down before he could freak out over being in a fifth-rate fantasy story and actually decides on a plan.

"Okay Matt, keep your wits together. Panicking won't do you any good in this situation, just walk around and maybe you'll find your way out of this place." Matt thought. "If any foes tries to jump you, just hit them with your sword. Speaking of swords. I wonder..."

Matt pulls Heaven's Gate from his back, grip it with both of his hands in front of him and close his eyes, he was then suddenly enveloped in a bright light before it quickly dissipates. Matt open his eyes and smirk at what he saw.

In his hand was no longer Heaven's Gate, but an entirely different sword.

it was a large blue broadsword with intricate markings covering its blade and a blue gem set in its pommel. Compared to Heaven's Gate, the blue broadsword was much less detailed. But Matt didn't care for how a sword looks, if it can cut foes in half then he won't complain.

"Sweet. It seems that I still have my swords and armors." Matt said with satisfaction as he admires the blue broadsword, Sapphire Saint. "Ah. What would I do without my swords?"

with that out of the way, Matt puts the sword on his back and begins his journey to find his friends and get out of this strange land he suddenly found himself in.

Matt was lost. There's no sugarcoating it, Matt was completely and utterly lost. Matt was absolutely sure he wandered for hours and he hadn't seen any signs of a way out of this strange area. And on top of that, he just found out that he can't summon any the foes they have captured now.

"Man... How big is this place?" Matt wondered out loud. "I don't think Lankyroot Jungle was this big and confusing."

As Matt wanders through the strange cherry blossom forest, he felt like he was being watched. Now to be fair, the feeling was with him the moment he started searching for an exit. He'll be the first to admit that he isn't smart, but Matt knows something bad would most likely happen if he ignore the feeling any longer.

So, with one hand on Sapphire Saint, he reach into his pocket and pulls out a snowball. Hey, he didn't want to injured someone just because they were curious, so a snowball it is.

Matt then throws the snowball in a random direction and...

"Ah!"

Direct hit!

"That should scare them off."  Matt thought with a nod, releasing his grip on his sword and continue searching for an exit.

One Hour Later

It has been exactly as the time card said, and Matt still hasn't found a way out yet. By this point, Matt was running out of food he has when he woke up in this place.

"Man. How long untill I find an exit? I'll go hungry in like, two hours." Matt thought in discomfort. "At this point, I'll probably eat a rat."

Right when Matt finish his thoughts, he heard small high-pitched squeaks coming from behind him. Turing around, he saw five seemingly harmless mice. Matt kept his guard up, after all it's usually the small and cute ones that is the most dangerous. Still though, they might know a way out of this place.

"Hey! Do you guys know how I can leave this place?" Matt asked the mice as politely as he could. "You see, I'm kinda lost right now and I need to get home... So would you guys be so kind as to show me the way out?"

One of the mice adopts a thinking pose for moment and shrugs, indicating that it doesn't. it then look and squeaks at the other mice, most likely asking if they know the way out as well. The other four mice thinks for a moment then either shrugs or shake their head, indicating they don't either. The mouse turns towards Matt and squeaks as if it was apologizing.

Matt sigh and assures the mice that it was fine and said he'll eventually find the way out himself. Before he turns to continue on though...

"By the way, it is just me? or does it look like that bush over there has ears similar to yours?" Matt asked while pointing to a bush behind the five mice that does in fact have mouse ears.

"Eep!" the "bush" exclaimed in surprise.

Before anyone can do anything, Matt dashes towards the "bush" and slash it with Sapphire Saint, immediately destroying it. The "mouse" jump out of the bush, its eyes wide in surprise.

Matt steadies himself and take a look at the "mouse" or rather, the short girl.

The girl has grey hair, red eyes and is wearing a brownish-black one-piece with pink sleeves and a gray capelet and some sort of crystal pendant on her neck. In her hands are gaint metal rods that has strange ends though Matt could sworn that they resemble letters quitea bit. The most unique thing about the girl though, is the fact she has a tail that has a basket (which has a mouse in it.) hanging from it and big mouse ears.

"Huh. Didn't think the first person I'll encounter in this place would be a furry." Matt thought in amusement. "Wait a second. Did her tail just moved? Probably just my imagination"

Matt and the mouse-girl stared at each other in silence like they're in some sort of showdown. this countinued for about fifiteen seconds before the silence is broken by the squeaks of a dozen angry mice. Matt looks around in surprise as everywhere he looked there were at least twelve mice giving him death glares.

"Wow... That is... quite the army." Matt said with a hint of fear in his voice. "So um... I guess this is the part where I fight you?"

The mouse-girl seems to snap out her surprise induced stupor at those words.

"Uh, what? Why?" The mouse-gril asked in confusion.

"Because the mice looks like they want to eat me alive for some reason." Matt replied as he switch Sapphire Saint for another sword. "Guess they don't take kindly to me attacking you."

The new sword Matt is holding is a large sword with an elaborate orange energy with a light orange edege and small markings in the middle. The blade is separated into three pieces near the base by three small orange orbs, matching the color of the larger orb in the cross-guard. its handle was black with an orange stripe near the guard and a red pommel at the end of it. All and all, it looked to be fearsome sword.

The mouse-girl flitches slightly at the sight of the orange sword.

"W-well, I don't think there's a need for that, I can command the mice to stand down and not fight you," The mouse-girl timidly replied. "A-and I can show you the way out of Muenzuka!"

"Eh? Muenzuka? This place is called Muenzuka?" Matt said with confusion. "That sounds like a name straight out of a video game."

The mouse-girl seems confused for a moment. She hadn't heard of this "video game", but right now, saving her skin takes priority.

"Y-you don't know that this place is called Muenzuka? This place is very dangerous." The mouse-girl repiled. "Not many people have come to Muenzuka but those that do, get killed and eaten by the yokais here."

When the mouse-girl finish her explanation (Which Matt suspects was heavily abridged.), Matt rest the orange sword, Inferno, on his right shoulder and thinks for a moment.

"Hmmm. This furry seems like she's being honest." Matt thought to himself. "If this place, Muenzuka as she calls it, is as dangerous as she claims then it's probably best to accept her help."

"Alright. I'll follow you out of this place," Matt said, putting Inferno on his back. "But don't you try any funny business with me. Got it?"

The mouse-girl nods a bit timidly.

"Okay. Just stay close to me and you'll be able to get out of here."  The mouse-girl said. "Oh. By the way, my name is Nazrin."

"Nazrin, huh? I'll keep that in mind."

With a possible fight averted, Matt begins to follow Nazrin out of Muenzuka.

Ten minutes later

The pair walk through Muenzuka escorted by mice which were still giving Matt death glares.

As they walk, Matt learned that Nazrin is a mouse yokai and that she's a helper of someone called "Shou." He also learned that the world he in is called Gensokyo

Matt and Nazrin were having a couple of small talks as they wander through Muenzuka.

"So, those gaint metal rods helps you find treasure?"

"Yep. These are called Dowsing Rods and with them I can find hidden gold, treasure and even let me command mice to do my bidding."

"Wait. You can't control mice without those rods? I thought you can naturally do that since you're mouse yokai."

"Yeah, that's a bit of misconception. The mice are friendly to me because I'm technically one of them. Though, I prefer to eat cheese rather then human flesh."

"Um... Good to know..."

"So, Matt, I'm curious about something."

"Hm? Ask away."

"How did you switch from that gaint blue sword to the one you currently have now?"

"Oh. That. I'm actually not it works excactly, but I'm guess it's just magic."

"I see..."

"Say, Nazrin. Do you ever felt like that you're not in control of your life even though it seems like you are?"

"No. What kind of strange qusetion is that?"

"No? Seem like it was just me, huh?"

Eventually, the two come across a pathway with red flowers alongside it.

"Ah. The Road of Reconsideration." Nazrin said, seemingly recognizing it.

"'The Road of Reconsideration'? That sounds ominous." Matt said with a hint of fear in his voice.

"It does... But the Road of Reconsideration is your best bet at getting out of Muenzuka." Nazrin explained. "Just go left along the road and you'll be out of here."

"Alright. Thanks for the help, Nazrin." Matt said in gratitude.

Nazrin nods and begins to walk back the they come, to find treasure Matt reasoned.

"Alright... Time to get out of this place and find my friends. I hope they doing okay in this strange world," Matt thought to himself. "No. They can take care of themselves Matt. Just have faith in them."

And thus, begins a new adventure in the strange new fantasical world known as Gensokyo. What dangers will Matt find? Will there be treasures to find? And just why excactly is Matt brought here? So many questions and so little answer at the moment.

"Hey Narrator! Can we just end the chapter now?"
