I Will

Summary:

Tan and Fang officially move in together after a couple of years into their relationship.

Notes:

Hello, I hope you can enjoy my work! The title of this fic is a Mitski song (which I heavily recommend) but don’t worry if you don’t know the song because it’s only loosely based on the lyrics, I just like to build my work off of songs!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The sight of the box-cluttered apartment would probably stress out anyone who saw it, besides Tan and Khaofang themselves who made the mess. Sometimes when he really sat down and thought about how he and Fang had gotten to this point, it confuses him, yet simultaneously makes perfect sense. From fighting to moving in with each other? It doesn’t seem exactly like the natural follow-up, but Tan wouldn’t want it any way other than this. He was thankful Fang punched him in the face that day. Fang breaks into his thoughts, “Can you bring this to our bedroom?”

Tan repeats, “Our bedroom? Awwe…” he grins, dramatically putting both of his hands over his heart.

Fang shakes his head and snickers, “Just take the box, ok?” he says as he pushes the box onto Tan.

“Of course, babe,” Tan complies, accepting the box from Fang’s extended arms; and taking it to its destination with all the other boxes full of clothes and whatnot, where the box belonged next to another box of similar contents that Tan could recognize as his own. There was just something so oddly pleasing about seeing both of their belongings blended together like this. Glancing around their soon-to-be-shared bedroom, he stops for a second to look at the empty bed, knowing that starting today he and Fang would be sleeping there, starting today. The words, ‘our bedroom’ replay in his thoughts as Tan studies the bed sheets and comforter. Sleeping is especially appealing considering how tired he is at this moment. His eyes seem to get heavier by the second, while his bones begin to ache in a particularly painful way from the continued action of moving boxes of varying weights and sizes. However, only when Fang gets tired will Tan allow himself to be tired as well; so he instead turns back around and walks back to Fang who is standing in the middle of the living room. He seems to be scanning around, making sure that the few remaining unopened boxes are in their correct rooms. Most of the boxes that were around were empty ones, but they still had a hefty chunk of work cut out for them to do, including what to do with the obscene amount of empty cardboard shells this move has now left them with. Tan walks to stand beside him, “Does that one say kitchen on it?” he asks, pointing at a nonexistent box, successfully tricking Fang into turning his face towards him so he can hatch his scheme of stealing a kiss. Fang tries to suppress his smile, but fails, as he always does, which makes Tan giggle a bit, “Do you need help?”

“Yes. You can stop hitting on me, and start unboxing things. That would help,” Fang replies; with no real malicious intent behind his words, which Tan knew, but obviously, he still was going to pretend to take it seriously.

Tan makes a fake face of thought before retorting, “I’ll do both,” which upon hearing makes Fang sigh into a small smile, which doesn’t try to fight this time; and Tan can’t help but smile with him. Fang’s gaze is suddenly geared toward him, and Tan can’t help but notice how beautiful he looks at this moment, “You’re so cute, babe.” Almost immediately after Tan says this Fang’s face starts to inch closer to his own, reaching for Tan’s hand to hold. Tan promptly shuts his eyes and it’s not long before their lips meet. Fang’s upper lip connects with Tan’s lower, blending seamlessly. Fang then pulls back; short but nonetheless kissing Fang always left a smile on Tan’s face.

Fang starts to drag Tan away from the living room to their bedroom, “Come on, I’ll unpack my stuff too.” Tan, still feeling giddy from their short kiss is unable to come up with any response at the moment, so he instead just appreciates the fact that they’re currently holding hands, even if it’s going to lead him into unboxing.

Once they reach the bedroom their hands unclasp and Fang targets a box with his name on it to start the work in the room. The only real progress that has been made in the room is their bed, which was the first thing Tan did, making sure that neither of them would have to do it later. It didn’t look amazing, as the bed was just a mattress on the ground with some bedsheets and a comforter, but they could worry about assembling the bedframe another day. Besides, Tan would call their first day of moving a success, all the boxes were at least inside the apartment.

“Tan,” once again he is caught off guard and removed from his thoughts, it must be the need for sleep growing. “Do you know where the hangers are?” Fang questions. Tan isn’t sure he has an answer to give him, does he know? Did they buy hangers? Apparently Tan has taken longer than he thought he was to think about hangers because Fang speaks again, “Go take a shower.”

“After I finish,” Tan replies.

“No. Go shower,” Fang adds, “you need to rest.”

Tan sulks, “Babe, you’ll hurt my feelings. Why are you trying to get rid of me?”

“We can do more tomorrow. Go shower,” Fang persists.

“Only if you join me, babe,” Tan teases.

Fang bluntly replies, “Ok.” This wasn’t what Tan was expecting to hear, he teases Fang a lot like this, but it doesn’t usually end up this way.

The bathroom is connected directly to the bedroom and is one of the more moved-into rooms; since they both showered twice daily. There are all the normal toiletries one would expect, and a pair of towels, one for Fang and the other for Tan are hung on the shower’s walls. Once the both of them enter the room Tan walks over to turn the shower on so it’s warm by the time they get into it. By the time he turns around, Fang has already taken his shirt off. So he takes that as his queue to strip down as well.

Tan enters first as he is closest to the shower already, and Fang gets in shortly after, standing behind him. As soon as the hot water hits Tan’s achy joints he can feel his pain melt away by the second. He may have tried to fight taking this shower, but in reality, he couldn’t be happier with the position he is currently in.

“Can I wash your hair?” Fang asks. It seems like something Tan would ask, and maybe it’s because of the time they have spent together, that now his behavior is rubbing off on his boyfriend. Or maybe he just simply wanted to wash his hair.

“Of course, babe.” this might be the most repeated sentence Tan says.

Behind him, he can hear Fang grab the shampoo bottle to start washing his hair, but when he does reach him, and Tan can feel his finger gliding through his hair, he’s caught off guard by how amazing it feels. Tan wasn’t expecting to like it this much, but feels like achieving true and utter peace, like he is literally showering in love. Fang removes his hands for a moment to let the shampoo wash out before moving on to the conditioner. Fang’s hands returned to his hair and Tan closed his eyes, focusing on how Fang's fingers carefully glided through his hair; he could tell how much precaution Fang was using as he did this. This made him adore Fang just a bit more than he already did.

After Tan’s hair had been fully washed out, he asked Fang if they should switch places which he declined. Fang explained that his hair was still clean from his previous shower so they both got out and dried off instead.

Once they both had changed into their pajamas, with hair still dripping from their shower, towels displayed around their necks Tan asserts, “Let me dry your hair.” Fang nods in reply and Tan begins to dry his hair. Even though Fang hadn’t washed it purposely, it still got a bit wet, but didn’t take long to dry as it wasn’t ever fully wet. Once he had finished drying Fang’s hair he quickly dried his own and they both got into their bed for the first time.

Tan grabbed Fang's waist as soon as he had the opportunity. It was nice to have a place of their own, where they could simply exist like this together. The thought of waking up next to Fang from this morning onward made Tan feel like a kid who couldn’t fall asleep the day before their birthday. He couldn’t wait to see his face tomorrow and the next day.

Notes:

Here’s to hoping for an AouBoom series in 2025! I had a really tough time writing this, it got to about 100 words per hour at a certain point. This was my first time writing in a while as well as my first time writing TanFang. I tried hard to characterize them properly and hope my efforts can be appreciated by someone out there, so if you liked my work, thank you so much! I truly appreciate it. My biggest struggle was definitely how cheesy Tan can be; writing pet names into my work makes me feel a bit dumb…
