Chapter Text

It'd been seven years since the last time Harry'd seen Draco. Since that fateful night when everything had fallen apart.

Seeing him again across the crowded room sent an array of feelings through Harry's chest. Under different circumstances, he might've tried to slip away unnoticed, but that wouldn't work today. He knew he'd have to buckle up and greet him.

Time seemed to slow as he walked across the floor to stand in front of the man who had once been his lover.

"My condolences," he said sombrely.

Draco stared at him, his expression wooden. "What are you doing here? I thought you swore never to talk to me again."

Harry sighed. "Come on, Draco, I'm not here to fight with you."

"Then what?"

He sounded like a stubborn child and Harry felt the irritation grow inside him.

"I wanted to show my respects at your wife's funeral, because I'm genuinely sorry that she died," he said sharply.

Recoiling slightly, Draco lowered his gaze. "Of course. Thank you."

Hesitating, Harry placed a hand gently on Draco's shoulder in what he hoped was a comforting manner. Draco suddenly slumped, looking fragile and broken.

"I'm sorry, Harry," he whispered. "But I had to. Mother..."

Swallowing, Harry dropped his hand and nodded. "Family comes first," he simply said.

Regarding each other in silence, Harry wondered where they'd go from here.
