Chapter Text
When Emerald Skylight finally got a Switch for her birthday, she was ecstatic. She loved Pokemon, and was now finally able to play one. She’d only had Xboxes and Playstations, so this was amazing for her.
She certainly didn’t expect to grind for a few hours, go to bed, and wake up the next day on a patch of grass in the middle of nowhere.
“What the-?!” The blonde-haired girl exclaimed, confused. Where was she?
A small but sharp-sounding mrow sounded from behind the child, making her swiftly turn around. A large amount of rocks and brown grass was in her sights, including…
Emerald was shocked. A Shinx?!
As she noticed it, it mrowed again, and a few more popped out, their blue fur making it clear that there was no shiny. They all stared at her for a moment, and she stared at them in shock.
No one moved for a moment.
Suddenly, a Pokeball was flung at one of the Shinx, making the others run away in fear.
Emerald watched as a small orange rat came out, her recognizing it as Pawmi. She swiftly turned to see a girl with black hair (But two strands colored green) and bright orange eyes with a school outfit on. The outfit looked to be a white shirt, orange tie, and orange shorts plus black stockings and pink shoes.
The girl had a bright smile on her face as she exclaimed, “Pawmi, use Scratch!”
Emerald watched in wonder as the Shinx jumped up to Tackle, but Pawmi swiftly lept over and raked its claws at the poor cat, making it yowl and flop to the ground. Apparently it was underleveled.
“Good job, Pawmi! Use Scratch again!”
The Pawmi easily scratched the Shinx again, and the cat’s head dropped to the ground. Its tail flopped down with it, and Emerald watched in sadness and shock as it shrunk down until a small cloud appeared. When it went away, the Shinx was gone.
“Geez…” She mumbled.
Emerald then saw the Pawmi return to its Pokeball, and the girl who took the rat out turned to her. “Hi there!”
“O-Oh-Uh-Hi…” Stay calm, it’s just-
The girl held out her hand. “Do you need help?”
“Uh-Ye-Sure…” STOP STUTTERING YOU-
The girl helped her up and smiled at her. “You don’t look like you’re from here. Were you doing a staring contest with those Pokemon?”
Emerald gulped, full of nervousness. “I… I’ll be honest… I’m really not from here… And I wasn’t meaning to, just… They don’t exist where I came from…”
“Wait, really?” The girl asked, surprised. “Well, I guess you’re not from Sinnoh then…”
Emerald decided to not tell her the real truth and nervously said, “Uh, I’m Emerald…”
“Oh! My name’s Nemona!” She smiled a bit. “Do you wanna battle with me?”
Emerald turned to look at the Pokemon around them, and asked, “I… Don’t have a Pokemon…”
“Oh…” The Pokemon battling fanatic made a :3 with her lips. “Well… Wanna get a starter then?”
Emerald’s eyes widened. She started jittering with excitement and asked, “Really?!”
“Sure!” Nemona’s smile was back. “Here, you’ll need these!” She reached into her bag and gave the blonde five normal Pokeballs. “Alright, do you need help on how to catch them?”
Emerald couldn’t stop thinking about her personality on the internet. The official one on the Pokemon website literally said she wasn’t the best at throwing Pokeballs, but she just tossed one to battle, she shouldn’t be too bad, right? “Maybe? I know how to get the Pokemon ready to catch, but not the throwing per se.”
“Sweet!” Nemona's smile was now contagious, making the blonde teen smile a bit. “I’ll initiate a battle, and you can catch it when I get it low enough.”
“O-Okay…” Emerald looked around.
Nemona followed the blonde’s glances and took out her Rotom phone. “Let’s see… We’re in South Province 3… There’s Nacli, Skiddo, Makuhita, Shinx-”
Emerald suddenly interrupted by ‘eee’ing about Shinx. She loved that Pokemon, which was a reason why she was just staring at the last pack.
“Do you like Shinx?” Nemona asked, a snicker escaping from her lips. Emerald enthusiastically nodded, vibrating with excitement. Nemona was now giggling. “Then let’s go get you a Shinx!”
“Yaayyy!” Emerald cheered, pumping her arms up.
The pair walked for a moment, finding Nacli, Skiddo, and even some Rookidee before finally finding a pack of Shinx. They watched as the cats with blue fur were just chilling out, being themselves. The pair of girls hid behind a bush as they planned on what to do again.
“Alright. I’ll take out my Pawmi, do some of the damage, and then when it starts to look tipsy, grab one of those Pokeballs, press the white button to prepare it, and then throw it at it, okay?” Nemona asked.
Emerald nodded, taking out a Pokeball. “Yes, I do!”
They waited for a bit, and noticed there was no yellow cat again. So, Nemona jumped up and flung a Pokeball at one of the Shinx, scaring the rest away while the ball hit the cat, then opened, releasing Pawmi and moving back to Nemona.
Emerald noticed that the Shinx growled at the Pawmi, making Nemona’s Pokemon shiver a bit.
Intimidate ability!
She loved that, since Rivalry only made the Pokemon good against half of the total ‘mons, and Guts was not one she knew about. Intimidate was one she always insisted she had for Shinx, Gyarados, Sandile, and even Growlithe. It could be a lifesaver, and she knew it.
Nemona noticed her mon shivering slightly, and assured it, “You’ll be okay, Pawmi. No worries. Now, use Scratch!”
Emerald watched as the Pawmi tried to toughen up and charged at the cat. Shinx swiftly tried to avoid it, but accidentally went into the mouse’s trap, making the scratch seriously hurt it. Nemona’s Rotom phone suddenly exclaimed, “Critical hit!” making the black-haired girl smirk. “Sweet! One more Scratch, Pawmi!”
The mouse hopped towards the staggering cat as its claws came out. Shinx quickly tried to tackle it, but the mouse did another scratch on the cat, making the poor Shinx bleed a bit.
Emerald couldn’t take it anymore. It looked like torture. She pressed the button on the Pokeball, and tossed it to the cat, hoping to not hit it too hard. It landed on the Shinx’s back, and the droopy cat turned into a bunch of colorful matter, sucking into the Pokeball. Nemona prepared to make Pawmi try to avoid future attacks as Emerald watched the ball shake.
One…
Two…
Three…
The button flashed green as the ball stopped shaking. “You got it!” Nemona cheered as she returned Pawmi back to its Pokeball.
Emerald shakily approached the ball, and saw that there was now a small blank spot on it. “I… I have a Shinx… Woah…” She then turned back to Nemona. “Why is there a blank dash on the red part near the button?”
“Oh, that’s for nicknames. I don’t name my Pokemon. I don’t know why.” The champion-ranked girl shrugged. “I just never have. I probably should try…”
Emerald glanced at her new Pokeball and mumbled, “Do I just say it?” Of course, no reply. She sighed. “Can I call you Penny?”
Suddenly, the blank spot was replaced by small text saying ‘Penny’. Emerald smiled.
Since her cat was supposedly still at home, which made her upset, she knew that if her baby was here now, she’d be represented with one of her favorite ‘mons. The one that she felt represented her.
She turned to Nemona again. “Thank you so much, seriously…”
“No problem!” Nemona smiled. “Here, would you like a potion to heal it?” She took out a small purple bottle and held it in her hand.
“Yes please.” Emerald nodded. She took it, and pressed the button, seeing the poor Shinx come out. She didn’t want to see the cat in this shape, so she quickly sprayed the potion on Shi- No. Penny’s back. A few of the injuries healed up, and Penny noticed this. Emerald finished with her body, and noticed a large scratch mark on the cat’s face. “I’m going to heal your face. If you’d close your eyes, you won’t get more hurt…” Penny hesitantly closed its eyes, and Emerald did a light spray. The wounds healed, and Penny was brand new again. She turned back to Nemona. “Do you have Shinx in your dex?”
“Oh, yeah.” Nemona nodded, sitting on a rock. “Here, lemme just… Oh. You asked cause you don’t have one?”
“Mmhm.” Emerald nodded.
The peppy girl hopped up, slightly scaring Penny, and exclaimed, “Then let’s go get you one! Do you at least have a phone?”
Emerald checked herself. She had on what Nemona did somehow, and checked her backpack that had appeared. She didn’t want to question it. She was internally, but didn’t express it.
5 Potions…
10 Pokeballs…
Oh!
Emerald took out a normal-sized phone with a chunky phone case that protected everything but the main screen, and had a large picture of a girl with coral brown hair and green eyes. “YES!” She shouted a bit too loud in relief. It was her original phone! She imagined herself hugging it, but out loud she nervously giggled. “I mean, uh, yeah.”
Nemona snickered, and told her, “Okay, lemme see… Darn, Rotom is in a different area. Say, maybe they have some at school. Besides, weren’t you gonna go there anyway?”
“D-Uh-Sure? I wasn’t thinking about it, but…” Emerald trailed off. It wasn’t a terrible idea per se. Maybe she’d somehow learn something.
Nemona smiled a bit. “Sweet! Alright then, follow me!”
