Let's Move Forward Towards Tomorrow

Summary:

“I was just about to look for you.” Gyomei explained, his scrunched up face relaxing at the sound of her approaching footsteps stopping in front of him. Upon facing her, she noticed that his kasugai crow, Zekka, was perched on his shoulder.

“I’m home now.” She smiled beneath the uniform’s mask. How kind of him to worry. Zekka leaned down from his shoulder as she reached up to pat the top of his head, earning a loud deep caw from the crow. She and Gyomei laughed lightly at Zekka’s excitement.

“Welcome back.” Gyomei greeted, his eyes crinkling with his soft smile.

A recently titled "Kakushi" and the Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima unofficially adopt Genya Shinazugawa into their small but peaceful family. This story follows the Reader and her growing romance with Gyomei while attempting to stick as close to canon as possible.

Chapter 1: Beneath the Surface

Notes:

I wanted to write a fanfiction about Gyomei that was mostly fluff and works somewhat as a "fix-it" in terms of some of the things that happen at the end of Demon Slayer. Although, this fic will focus on the budding relationship between the Reader, Gyomei, and Genya---who they enjoy looking after.

As a warning, this will contain manga spoilers so please be aware of that if you haven't read anything after season 4! However, this starts at the beginning of the series, just after final selection. The major spoilers still have a long way to go in terms of appearing. Just keep that in mind if you read this fic anyways.

Without further ado, here's the first chapter!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

“Ms. Kocho, I’ve finished with my sutures, can you check my work?” She spoke softly, closing the small medical kit in her lap. She sat upon a wooden stool, at the bedside of an injured demon slayer.

Around her were more injured demon slayers who had returned from their most recent mission. Their mission was harsh, but their wounds weren’t nearly as bad as they could have been. Though, she still didn’t fully trust herself in her medical prowess. After all, she was only recently given the title of “kakushi.”

“Of course,” Shinobu Kocho answered swiftly, saying the Kakushi’s first name. “But, I thought we were past the formalities?” She smiled, approaching her seated form. There weren’t many wounded slayers that needed sutures, so it wouldn’t take long for someone as skilled as Shinobu to determine their recovery.

“Ah, I’m sorry.” She rubbed the back of her neck through the kakushi uniform’s coverings. “Force of habit.”

“Not to worry, but we’re friends now after all.” Shinobu replied, leaning down to examine the patient’s sutures. With no response, she glided to the next patients, inspecting the stitches the Kakushi provided. The lines were straight and neatly tied without uneven edges, sewn with precision but more likely experience.

“Mm-hm! You’ve gotten a lot better.” Shinobu cheered, making the Kakushi smile beneath her mask.

“It’s because of your teachings, and Mr. Goto’s.” She praised, looking off to the side bashfully.

“That’s not entirely true, you’ve also put in the effort.” Shinobu began wrapping the sutures of the injured slayers with clean cloth bandages. “You come here so often, you’re bound to improve. Your experience is showing.”

“Thanks Ms. Koc-” She cut herself off. “Shinobu.” Her cheeks flushed. It was going to be a little hard addressing Shinobu as her equal after all the time she spent learning under her guidance.

She mimicked Shinobu and picked up another roll of bandages, helping to bandage the other patient’s injuries.

Shinobu giggled and shook her head. Her new friend was really sweet. “You’ll get better at that too in time.”

Shinobu stood and dusted off her butterfly-patterned haori when they finished bandaging. “Now, we have one more patient I’d like you to assist with. He’s a rather special case.”

“Yes!” The Kakushi stood without hesitation and turned to her patients. She bowed her head and stood, grabbing her medical kit. The patients muttered their pitiful “thanks” and started to doze off.

She hoped they would recover soon. Afterall, they sustained those injuries while out saving others. She thought it was honorable.

Following Shinobu out of the patients’ ward, the Kakushi carried her medical kit in both hands. She felt a little like a duckling swimming after its mother.

“What kind of patient is he?” The Kakushi began, curious about whatever new injuries she would have to attend to. While her experience in healing wasn’t nearly as valuable as the other kakushi, she was willing to do what it takes to improve her abilities. Which meant more often than not she was determined to treat any and all of those who are injured. Having a special case meant she would face a new medical trial.

“He’s Sanemi’s younger brother, Genya.” Shinobu continued leading the way to another room. The Kakushi felt her nerves slightly rattle at the mention of the Wind Hashira.

In their brief meeting before she gained her title, Sanemi yelled at her for taking too long to treat his slashed arm. This led to an argument between the two, as the Kakushi bickered about Sanemi moving too much while Sanemi continued to rush her.

After he was finally patched, he pushed past her, making her drop her tools. Bitterly, the Kakushi threw her hands up exasperatedly and shouted, “You’re welcome by the way!”

Sanemi ignored her and kept walking to who knows where. Since that brief meeting, She was bitter about treating him again. Nevertheless, she still respected him and all his efforts as the Wind Hashira. Even if his attitude was brash, she would still treat his wounds if the time came again. She was determined to pull his stitches really tight if he needed them.

At the mention of his younger brother, she felt some bitterness fester beneath her skin. However, she told herself that Genya was an entirely different person than his older brother. There had to be some difference.

There was absolutely no difference.

The moment Shinobu introduced the Kakushi to Genya Shinazugawa, he huffed and rolled his eyes. It was as though the sight of her made his attitude even worse, and she hadn’t even done anything!

The Kakushi’s first thought was about his appearance. She couldn’t believe how little he looked! He didn’t even look thirteen! Checking his chart ultimately confirmed his age as sixteen, which shocked her even more. There was no way this runt was sixteen!

After introducing herself, Genya ignored every comment she made and every question she asked. He only answered Shinobu, and even then it was with short responses!

The nerve of these Shinazugawas! The Kakushi could not believe such cold and dismissive attitudes could be passed between family members. She quelled her irritation by focusing only on Shinobu.

Shinobu had no reaction to it and simply smiled through the check-up. The Kakushi admired such kindness and attempted to unfurrow her frustrated eyebrows. She was glad her head covering masked her soured face.

From what she understood from his check-up, Genya had the ability to eat demons. Due to this heinous concept, Shinobu required him to visit her estate after every mission to determine the status of his health. This was one of his regular visits, and since the Kakushi was present, she decided to show her something new.

When the Kakushi first glanced over his body and took his vitals, he was completely and utterly normal. In fact, almost everything read better than average. Any wounds he reported were already long gone, not leaving any scarring or trace. It was truly fascinating, which made the Kakushi poke at him a little more than wanted.

After the check-up was complete and Shinobu allowed him to leave, he stormed out of the room without so much as a “Thanks.” His loud footsteps echoed down the halls the further away he got.

The Kakushi let out a sigh of relief and used both hands to rub her temples. One day she’d lose it, she’d totally lose it!

Shinobu closed her eyes and chuckled at her friend’s distress. “Not what you expected?”

“The opposite!” She huffed back. “I thought because he was a younger brother, he’d be kinder. Instead,” She moved her hands frantically, searching for the right words. “He’s just like his older brother!”

Shinobu laughed louder, covering her mouth. It was true, the two reacted the same way whenever Shinobu had treated them.

“They’re both similar yet so different. I think in time you’ll see it.” Shinobu stood up from the stool she sat on. “They may not look like it, but they are both caring. Otherwise they wouldn’t have chosen such a hard road in their lives.” She reasoned. It made sense to the Kakushi, no normal person would willingly throw themselves in front of demons.

The Kakushi smiled at her response, “I bet they are, I just have to spend more time with them.” She paused, her eyebrows furrowing as she hit her fist on her other open palm. “The next time I treat them, I’ll definitely befriend them.”

Shinobu laughed again at the sight of her friend’s determination. Despite the struggles her Kakushi endured, she tried to see the brighter side. It was rather endearing and motivating. She thought this Kakushi fit in at the Butterfly Estate just perfectly.

“You’re more than capable. After all, you’re able to get Gyomei to talk a little more.” Shinobu teased, a playful smirk painting her lips.

The Kakushi flushed and shifted her eyes away from Shinobu’s gaze. She wasn’t wrong, she noticed Gyomei would talk a little more lately but she didn’t believe it just because of her.

In reality, it had taken quite some time before the Stone Hashira opened up to her. She thought that maybe if she stayed as consistent as she had with him, both Shinazugawa brothers would do the same.

Though, their behavior is much different than Gyomei’s. She worried it would take a long while.

“I’ll try my best.” The Kakushi nodded reluctantly, moving past Shinobu’s comment.

“That’s all you can do!” Shinobu encouraged her. She clapped her hands together lightly. “Now, should we see what Aoi has prepared for dinner?”

“Ah.” The Kakushi paused, glancing out of the window in the room. The sky had already begun to lose its light blue color. “It’s that time already? I’d better head home then to prepare dinner too.” She bowed apologetically. “Please give Aoi and the little ones my apologies. I’ll definitely eat with you all next time.”

“Don’t stress about it too much, Aoi will understand.” Shinobu replied, waving her hand dismissively. “Gyomei is expecting you home so soon?”

“Yes, he told me he wanted to introduce someone to me.” The Kakushi explained, moving around Shinobu to once again tidy up her medical kit. It was a definitive change from her usual stay, since most times the Kakushi would stay overnight.

“I see. Shame you can’t stay, but there is always next time.” Shinobu’s face remained the same, but the disappointed tone gave her away. Now she wished she could stay longer, but making Gyomei wait longer made her wish to return even faster.

“Of course, please give the girls my farewells since I won’t be able to see them off today.” The Kakushi finished gathering her tools, approaching the shoji door.

“Thank you for everything today, I’ve learned even more today too.” The Kakushi bowed in gratitude.

“You’re always welcome back.” Shinobu smiled kindly. “Now come, I’ll see you off instead today.”

“You needn’t do that Shinobu, I’ll be fine!” The Kakushi shook her head quickly. It felt like overstepping to have the Insect Hashira do such a task.

“I told you already, we’re friends. It’s what they do.” Shinobu grabbed her arm and tugged her throughout the halls of her estate.

“A-Ah, thank you.” The Kakushi stuttered, shy from Shinobu holding on to her arm. It really was nice but also strange to go from student to friend. As such, it did feel good to have another friend amongst the higher ranked Hashiras, especially one as talented as Shinobu. She hoped their new friendship would last for many years.

Shinobu led the Kakushi through her home and towards the bamboo entrance of the Butterfly Estate. The sun was already beginning to set, meaning she didn’t have long to return home. She had promised Gyomei she’d return before the moon rises.

“Get home safe, yeah?” Shinobu released her arm and waved off the Kakushi. “I’ll look forward to seeing you again.”

“I will! Thanks again for everything today! I’ll see you soon!” The Kakushi waved back and started the trek back to Gyomei’s estate.

The air felt nice after being in Shinobu’s home all day. While most of the day was spent learning more from Shinobu, it hadn’t been entirely slow. The injured demon slayers arrived in a rush, causing Shinobu’s estate to bustle. This meant she would have to demonstrate what she had learned over time.

The last couple hours were spent stemming bleeding, patching up minor wounds, and ultimately testing her skills in stitching wounds. Stitching was a skill Shinobu had been making her practice more lately, so once again it felt like a trial she had to overcome.
Truthfully, she really couldn’t wait to get out of her kakushi uniform after such a day. She wanted to eat the sweet potatoes she eyed before leaving this morning. As she walked, she wondered about what dinner to make for Gyomei and their guest.

The walk home wasn’t entirely short, but it wasn’t terribly long. She had just made the turn to the entrance of the estate when she peered up to see Gyomei’s large form. She noticed he had changed from his demon corps uniform into a striped dark gray and black yukata. Though, he still wore his earthy yellow haori over top and huge red beads around his neck.

His back was to the wooden entrance doors as he closed them. Upon hearing the gravel crunch louder, he looked up and said the Kakushi’s name.

“Our guest arrived a little before you did, so come and join us.” He reached for the entrance doors and pushed them open. He closed them shut again, and they walked the short gravel path to the estate’s sliding doors.

When they entered the building, Gyomei called out, “Genya, my companion has arrived.”

Alarmed, the Kakushi glanced down the entrance hall to see Genya poking his head out from the doorway of the kitchen.

“It’s you!” She pointed, causing Genya to groan distastefully. With a gasp at his behavior, she placed her medical kit down besides the entrance shoji doors.

“You’ve already met?” Gyomei questioned, his face puzzled.

“Mhm,” She nodded. “Just a short while ago Shinobu had me assist in his check-up.” She explained. She moved her hand to her face covering and started to pull at it but was stopped by Gyomei’s large hand grabbing her wrist softly.

“Are you sure?” Gyomei tilted his head concerned. It was typical practice for the kakushis to cover up their faces to conceal their identities and actions. Going against it meant leaving an opening for danger.

“Do you think I shouldn’t?” She wondered aloud and held his wrist, causing Gyomei to release his hold. He shifted back and forth on his feet slightly. Genya watched the interaction with a scowl.

“No, I mean it’s your choice. Genya is also a demon slayer.” He said, his eyes focused solely on her. His blank gaze made her fidget, silently gushing to herself. Gyomei was worried about who she revealed herself to! Her heart paced faster, and she desperately hoped his good hearing couldn’t pick it up.

“I mean, this is my home too, I’m going to dress comfortably.” She smiled and steadied herself mentally. She didn’t want to act foolish. “I don’t mind if Genya sees, most of the Hashira have already.”

Gyomei nodded, accepting her choice. His tensed face relaxed once more. “Okay, we’ll be preparing dinner now, you have enough time to change and bathe if you’d like.”

“Are you sure? I offered to cook this morning.” She worried, she didn’t mean to stay as long as she had at Shinobu’s. She didn’t want to burden Gyomei and especially their new guest with cooking.

“You’ve worked hard today, this is the least we could do.” Gyomei touched the top of her head. “Go get changed into something relaxing.”

When her face flushes, even knowing that Gyomei cannot physically see her, she’s glad that she hadn’t taken off her mask just yet.

“I won’t take long.” She declares and rushes towards her room. She hears low chatter when she closes the sliding door in her room. Hastily she grabs a yukata, a floral lavender one that Shinobu gifted when she received her title a few days ago.

She exits her room and quickly bathes, pinning her hair up to shorten the time. As she lathers her body, she feels all the work from the day wash off of her body, along with any lingering exhaustion.

She had not expected the younger Shinazugawa to be their guest for the night, which made her feel like she was given a second chance to build a connection with Genya.

While he wasn’t directly insulting or rude to her like Sanemi was in the past, his dismissive behavior made her resentfully pout. She wanted that to change, she wanted to believe in Shinobu’s words.

She simmered in her own thoughts while rinsing off the soap suds from her body.

After she was finished, she hastily dressed in her yukata and released her hair from its pinned state. Since it wasn’t wet, it was easier to make presentable.

She grabs her folded uniform and exits the bathroom to find Gyomei once again, this time without Zekka perched on his shoulder. He stops in front of her and leans down slightly.

“Have you finished? We’ve just finished dinner.” He says, towering above her even after adjusting his height.

“Yes, I’ve just got to put my uniform away and I’ll be right there.” She replies, which causes Gyomei to retreat back to the kitchen.

After doing said task, she finally arrives into the open kitchen. Genya and Gyomei sit on plush pillows at their table, which is fully spread with the food they made. Despite her face being revealed, Genya barely glances at her.

“Oh thank you, I could have served it.” She mumbled the last part, seeing a spread of food awaiting her spot at the table.

Gyomei heard her clearly of course and said, “It’s not an issue.”

She took her seat, across from Gyomei and next to Genya.

“Thanks for the meal!” She exclaims and digs in happily. Once Gyomei hears the clanking of her chopsticks, he too begins to eat. Genya reluctantly starts too, observing the pair curiously.

“So, Genya, I already introduced myself earlier. It’s a pleasure to see you again.” She beams between small bites. Maybe speaking kindly to him outside of work and in her own home would make him open up!

Genya doesn’t say anything and simply nods to acknowledge her. He almost wishes he didn’t because now her eyes widen, beaming with enthusiasm. She considers it a win.

“Food is really good…” She hums absently, happy to eat after a day of treating others.

Gyomei smiles and says, “Genya prepared most of it, I was more of an assistant. You did well Genya.” He commends Genya, who huffs.

“It was barely anything.” He chides, picking up rice with his chopsticks harder than needed.

“No, it’s really good!” She giggles, causing Gyomei to chuckle with her. “Thank you again. Today was a little hectic so a good meal is just the right way to take off some stress.”

Genya shrugs and stuffs rice in his mouth.

They finish up their meal with little conversation. She and Gyomei speak idly here and there, while Genya eats without a single word. Though it’s not much, It’s a lot livelier than he’s used to.

When they finish their meal, their conversation finally shifts solely to Genya.

“So, Genya will be visiting more often.” Gyomei starts, his tone more serious than she is used to. She tilts her head, confused. “I’ve decided to train him.” He clarifies.

“A tsugoku?” She asks, brows furrowed. She never recalled him taking a tsugoku at all.

“Not quite, just an apprentice.” He clears up her confusion.

“I see.” She says. “We’ll be seeing more of each other from now on Genya.” She adds with a cheerful smile.

“Whatever.” He replies gruffly. She thinks of ruffling his short mohawk to get back at him.

“Should I prepare a room?” She asks Gyomei, erasing her displeasing thoughts. It wouldn’t take long to prepare a room, she kept most things ready if ever a guest arrived.

“No, I’m not staying tonight.” Genya answers for him.

“Eh?” She pouts. “Why not? It’s already late out.”

“I don’t need to stay.” Genya grunts, as if it clears up anything.

“It wouldn’t be a bother.” Gyomei reasons. He already thought of asking Genya to stay earlier. Even if he didn’t quite trust the young demon slayer yet, he would not feel right making someone so young wander around in the dark.

“I’ll be fine.” Genya argues, frustration growing. “My business is my own.”

“I’ll give you fruit if you stay.” She bribes, a concerned look on her face. It didn’t feel right to let him go without any inkling of where he’d end up so late at night. Where did he even stay in the first place?

“Hah?” He exclaims exasperatedly. “I’m not a kid!”

“Gyomei we can’t let him wander around all night, it’s not safe!” She ignores Genya, causing his eye to twitch. Gyomei takes a few seconds to come up with a response, his head moving between the two while his eyes move aimlessly for an answer.

“I bought rice crackers earlier… We can share them if you stay…” Gyomei says slowly and seriously. She snorts at his attempt to bribe Genya into staying. She covers her lips from bursting out into laughter.

“I just said I’m not a kid! I don’t need that kind of stuff!” Genya shouts now, clenching his fists and irritated.

She doesn’t believe that at all because of how small he appears. It’s a little endearing to watch.

“Well, you’re staying here so…” She states and begins to gather the dishes on the table. “Come help me clean these dishes.”

“I’m not doing that!” He shouts angrily, but stands up anyways. Genya feels conflicted, as he doesn’t want to be rude to Gyomei right after he just agreed to train him, but also doesn’t want to be treated as a child by the pair. Especially by some random kakushi he hardly met.

“Shh, it’s late now. Come, come,” She beckons him over like a stray cat. “The quicker we clean the quicker we can eat those fruits I mentioned.”

Deciding to not lose his chance at training directly under a Hashira, Genya does as he’s told and helps her clean up. He’s frustrated and huffing while he helps her, ignoring the random chatter she spews about ripe fruits and clean dishes. Behind them, Gyomei stands, weeping silently behind the kitchen’s door frame.

“How moving… She got him to change his mind.” He mutters to himself before wandering off. He returns shortly with a watermelon and a basket full of fruit that the Kakushi had left earlier on the engawa.

When the dishes are cleaned, the Kakushi slices up the watermelon and a couple peaches, placing them in front of Genya and Gyomei, who sit back at the dining table. Genya eyes the watermelon most while he eats the fruits. If more watermelon ends up on his plate, no one bats an eye.

After they finish their fruits, the Kakushi tidies up once again and sets off to prepare a room for Genya. Gyomei sets off on his own business, requesting to meet with her after the room is finished. He bids goodnight to Genya, who returns the sentiment bitterly.

It doesn’t take long to prepare a room so Genya follows behind her awkwardly. He waits at the door at her request, not wanting to overstep more than he believes he has.

She lays out a futon and calls for Genya.

“Everything is ready now. You can rest safely here.” She smiles and gestures to the futon. “There is a small chest to place your uniform in, and plenty of yukatas set in the one next to it. There are many sizes, so you should have no issue getting comfortable.”

He nods, his form of thanks she realizes. She then moves a little closer to hit and pats his mohawk, causing him to back away sharply while she chuckles in response. He reminds her of the stray cat she tried to befriend.

“Rest well. If there is anything you need at all, my door is three rooms down. Gyomei’s is right across from mine if you would prefer his help.” She bows her head and walks towards the door.

“I hope you enjoy staying here with us.” She looks back with a small smile. Genya stands puzzled, unsure of how to respond while she slides the door closed.

Before heading to her own room, as promised she knocks at Gyomei’s door.

“Come in.” His deep voice replies. She slides the door open and finds Gyomei sitting on the engawa, the shoji doors wide open to display the soft white light of the moon illuminating the room and surrounding yard.

She approaches him and sits on her heels by his side. She always feels small next to Gyomei, even sitting next to him she feels him tower over her. Though she feels small, his intimidating appearance has never made her feel unsafe.

“It’s a beautiful night tonight.” She comments, making Gyomei tilt his head towards her.

“Is it?” He asks, shifting his gaze to look up at the night sky. “What does it look like?”

“Mn.” She affirms and moves her head further out to see the sky. “The moon is almost full. It’s quiet and I can see a few stars twinkling above.”

“The air will get colder soon. We won’t be able to sit out here when that time comes.” Gyomei responds, a little saddened by this revelation.

“I’ll bring a blanket then. Two even, so that we can bundle up and enjoy the night together.” She attempts to cheer him back up. Gyomei smiles, enjoying the lighter atmosphere the Kakushi brings with her.

When he doesn’t add to the conversation, she asks, “What did you think of today?” It goes unspoken, the question means, What do you think about Genya?

It’s not that she dislikes Genya, the evening went well and she had fun talking with the boy. She couldn’t help but feel a strange yet strong nature to protect the boy. Watching how he interacted with them showed his youth. His scarred and smaller appearance reminded her of so long ago. She felt compelled to make sure he would be okay if they took him into the estate.

Gyomei adjusts his arms, crossing them against his chest. “It was a nice day. Getting you to meet Genya was nice.”

“I’m glad.” She replies with a smile. She thought so too.

“I decided to train him because of his circumstances. Since you assisted Shinobu with his check-up, are you aware of his unique skill?” He asks.

“I am.” She confirms. “I didn’t know that was even possible.” She’d never heard of a demon slayer with the ability to eat demons and gain their powers.

Gyomei nods absently. “I don’t think anyone did.” He pauses, a brief silence spreading amongst the cool evening. He stares blankly in front of him.

“Oyakata-sama sent Zekka to me with news about him. Zekka told me that Genya lost control of himself after eating a demon when he was sent on a mission. I was sent to help him and protect the people in the area from the demon, and himself.” Gyomei pauses. The silence that spread this time was heavier than before.

“I eliminated the demon and grabbed Genya, taking him away before he could hurt the others there or himself. We stayed together in a small shed, waiting for the demon's blood to run its course in his body.” He continued. “He was able to talk, but he could not keep himself from attacking.” This made the Kakushi’s heart drop slightly.

“Is that why I had to patch up those scratches last week? The ones on your arms?” She questioned worriedly. She was saddened to hear that it was a result of Genya, who couldn’t control his body.

“Yes.” He confirmed easily, facing her gloomy stare. “I knew he didn’t mean it, and it was better to be me than any innocent people in the area.”

“If it wasn’t for Oyakata-sama’s request, I would have eliminated him.” Gyomei admitted, moving his head away from her gaze. “I felt pity for him. He wasn’t strong enough to fight back against the demon’s blood. It was also deeply disturbing to me that he was able to gain their power.”

She shuffled closer to him. Though his voice was steady, she knew he had already begun to cry.

“I could hear his fear. He was afraid of hurting humans, and he begged me to slay him. Such a pitiful child.” He reached to wipe the tears from his eyes, but felt the soft cloth of her yukata’s sleeve wiping them away instead. Once his face wasn’t so wet, she reached for his hand and held it. He hoped she didn’t notice his grip tighten.

“I listened to Oyakata-sama and continued to keep him safe. It took a couple hours for the blood to leave his body, which made him tired. After he passed out, I took him to the Butterfly estate.” He finishes his story. She placed her other hand on top of his, holding his hand now with both of her own.

“Is that why you took him in?” She wondered aloud.

“No,” He faced her and smiled. “This entire week he had been following me around, begging to be my tsugoku.” She smiled back, amused with the thought of the smaller boy following around the gentle giant. It made him seem even younger to her, hearing how afraid he was of hurting others, yet desperate to gain Gyomei’s help.

“He wasn’t intimidated or scared, and I learned his honesty and willpower to destroy demons pushes him so far.” He continues. “It was that which made me take him in. He would have been my tsugoku, but he cannot use breathing techniques.”

Before she could reply with anything, he asks, “What do you think of him?”

She releases their joined hands. “I thought he was like his brother, but I can see their difference now after what you’ve told me. I think if he’s given the chance to grow, he’ll become a remarkable Hashira one day.”

“I think so too.” He agrees. “I wanted to tell you about him because you’ll be seeing more of him here. I hope my choice does not burden you.”

“I don’t believe it will. It will just be a lot livelier than before, which does not bother me one bit.” She replies, happy with his choice. “Besides, I feel as though I’m the one who should be saying that. After all, I followed you around just as Genya did, begging to live here with you.” She ends with a laugh bubbling from her lips. Gyomei’s deeper rumble joins her.

“No, that choice was not burdening. I think I made a good choice that day too,” He says, his white eyes softening as he faces her direction. She can’t help the blush that spreads on her cheeks, red and burning, making her fidget in her spot.

“I look forward to the days to come. I wonder what sort of person Genya will be after he has trained with you.” She attempts to remove his strong gaze off of herself.

“I look forward to these upcoming days too. I will do what I can to help Genya become stronger.” He replies. The Kakushi can’t help the grin that forms on her face. Gyomei is the best person for Genya to train under, she hopes that all three of them can build strong relationships with one another.

She looks forward to the person Genya will become.

Notes:

Taisho-Era Secret: Genya had actually gotten up after the Reader left the room to speak with Gyomei. He wanted to ask for some water, but accidentally overheard pieces of their conversation. He went to the kitchen hurriedly, feeling a little guilty of over listening. Gyomei heard his footsteps as he stormed off. He didn’t think anything of it and let him be. The Reader was clueless.

A/N: I’m not entirely new to writing fanfiction, but I’m new to posting it. I end up losing motivation halfway through my writing so I never finish it. This time, I felt a strong sense of duty to passionately write about Gyomei.

About updating, it will be slow but once I post something, I'm determined to finish it. I'm very nervous about this obligation, even if it's just a fanfiction. I don't want to leave you guys hanging too long so I'll try to update when I'm happy with my work.

I hope that you’ll give me a chance to write something enjoyable and leave me any feedback. I’ll take your words with open arms!
