Work Text:
Michelle Mackey was already in her office when she heard JD conversing with Evie. “Morning, you two,” she greeted the two and they both glanced at each other, wondering why their boss was more chirpy.
“Did one of your enemies hit their heads?” JD decided to joke with the woman and suddenly, Mackey was back to being her usual, scowling self as she huffed at the question.
“Damn it, JD. She looked friendly,” even though she sounded like she was complaining, Evie knew she was used to Mackey being her usual, grumpy self as always so it was odd she had even looked a little bit happy about something.
Scratch that.
It wasn’t even a little bit.
Michelle Mackey was extremely giddy about something and the other two wanted to find out why.
When they came across DeShawn, Evie immediately started to question him about Mackey’s behavior. “Why is Mackey looking very happy right now?” She asked, causing DeShawn to look over at Mackey, who was back to frowning and grumbling about things. He frowned at the sight, causing Evie and JD to look at each other. “JD ruined it,” she immediately threw the man under the bus and he looked at DeShawn in horror.
“Look, we never saw her this happy. We were curious about what could be making her this excited about things,” JD explained and DeShawn grinned at the man’s words.
“Oh! That! We are getting a new forensic scientist,” DeShawn started to explain, knowing that Mackey wasn’t going to be paying them any attention while she was waiting for the new scientist to arrive.
“Why would Mackey be happy about that?” Evie innocently asked.
“Yeah, she doesn’t get along with people,” JD added.
“I can explain,” however, before DeShawn could say anything, the excited shout of a new voice made everyone turn to see who had arrived.
“Michelle!” A woman who was shorter than Mackey was suddenly in the woman’s arms as she was too excited to not scoop the new arrival into her arms. The woman giggled, staring at Mackey with happiness in her eyes. JD and Evie stared at the sight, shock evident in their gazes.
“Birdy,” Mackey said the woman’s nickname when she finally set her down. DeShawn smiled widely at the sight, knowing they had missed each other too much. “When did you get here?”
“I landed thirty minutes ago,” she was used to Mackey’s questioning habits, knowing it made the woman feel better when she knew the answers of her loved ones' whereabouts. “I was told where you were located. It’s weird being back on Australian soil,” the woman admitted to Mackey, who pulled her closer.
“Yeah? You have been spoiled living with me in America, haven’t you?” Mackey lightly teased and the others were shocked to see Mackey acting very much not like herself with the other woman. When the other woman realized her arrival was causing the others to look at her, she shyly ducked her head into Mackey’s shoulder. “Too late to hide now, sweetheart,” Mackey said, pressing her lips to the tip of the woman’s nose.
“ That was not how I wanted to introduce myself to your team,” the woman, causing the others minus DeShawn to look at her in confusion. Who was this woman? They all wondered.
“Before you ask, this is Blue. She is Mrs. Mackey,” Mackey told the others and immediately, they understood.
“You’re married?” JD questioned, causing Mackey to look at him with a small glare.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Mackey demanded.
“That,” JD responded, causing Mackey to look away from the man with a small huff.
“She can be a little rough around the edges but she’s a wonderful wife,” Blue told the others while wrapping her arms around one of Mackey’s arms. “Right, Michelle?” She fluttered her eyes at Mackey, who lovingly rolled her eyes.
“Only for you, Birdy, only for you,” she said with a smile. Evie looked at DeShawn with shock in her eyes.
“Hey, she came before I tell y’all,” he said and Evie blinked away the shock she was still feeling. She does have emotions. She isn’t too quick to show them but Blue can read her. Evie realized, understanding that Mackey was honest with Blue about how she felt.
“Have you had coffee yet?” Blue asked, keeping her arms wrapped around one of Mackey’s arms.
“I barely had breakfast,” she admitted and Blue let out a small hum.
“You’re eating later,” Blue told her.
“Date night?” Mackey asked.
“Correct,” she replied.
“Yes, ma’am,” Mackey moved Blue into her lap once she was inside her office, wanting to keep her wife near her now that they were back together. Blue didn’t comment on how clingy Mackey was getting, knowing it happened when they had been separated for far longer than either of them expected. I’m glad to be back with her. Blue thought, leaning her head against Mackey’s chest, wishing to remain with her.
“What is going on?” JD asked when DeShawn looked at the couple sadly.
“They don’t take being separated for long periods very well. You see, Mackey had been here for a few months already. She was still getting used to the area before she could lead a team of agents. Luckily, Blue is here,” he responded.
“Oh, you don’t call her B…” DeShawn cleared his throat before JD could finish what he was saying.
“Yeah, that’s not allowed. Only Mackey can refer to Blue as that particular nickname,” he warned and the others could understand why. Mackey had been referring to Blue as Birdy ever since she had arrived and they weren’t going to be the ones to piss Mackey off over a cute nickname she used for her wife.
“I can be the forensic scientist for your team,” Blue told Mackey, who smiled at the words. I love this woman. She thought, wanting to pull Blue as close as she could get her.
“Good because we need one,” Mackey told Blue with a small smile. “I missed you, Birdy,” Mackey admitted to Blue, who kept herself pressed against Mackey’s body.
“I missed you too, Michelle,” she responded and Mackey brushed her lips against Blue’s lips, kissing her softly.
