Summary:

Julian and Dax discuss the "game" they used to play of collecting and cataloguing alien lovers.

For the Gamma Quadrant Discord server drabble prompt "competition."

Work Text:

“Do you remember those games we used to play? Back when—” It always feels so rude to say when you were Jadzia.

But Ezri picks up on it immediately. “You two played so many! But I know which one you mean.” She smiles at the recollection. She’s more comfortable with this now, with talking about the Dax symbiont’s past lives like they’re older versions of her current self—like pleasant memories.

“I think you beat her in the end, but only because she settled down first.” She gestures at Julian, decked out in Cardassian robes, lazing by the pool in their lavish summer home, his husband preparing cocktails inside. “If she could only see you now.”

Husband of the Castellan. Not quite a kept man—still a dutiful doctor healing Cardassia’s war wounded—but his current look would leave you none the wiser.

“And look at you!” He gapes in mock-surprise at his old friend. “A Bolian girl, is it now? You know I never quite got around to them…”

“Julian, really…”

“Is their saliva as corrosive to Trills as it is to humans?”

She giggles. “That’s too much!”

Their game is not for her. But it’s fun to reminisce.
