Work Text:
Sheldon Cooper had meticulously planned their Thanksgiving trip to Texas. Every detail was accounted for: flight times, seat assignments, and even a pre-packed itinerary for their visit with his mother, Mary. Sheldon was confident that everything would go smoothly, but as they stood in the airport, waiting to check in, things were already starting to unravel.
Amy, now 14 weeks pregnant, was leaning against the check-in counter, her eyes half-closed in exhaustion. The flight was early, too early for Amy’s liking, but Sheldon insisted on the 6 a.m. departure to maximize their time with his family.
Sheldon, oblivious to Amy’s growing irritation, was busy scrutinizing the check-in process, his eyes narrowing as he noticed a group of passengers being escorted to the front of the line.
“They’re getting special privileges,” he muttered, mostly to himself. He quickly turned to the airline staff member at the counter, his posture straightening as if preparing for a debate. “Excuse me, ma’am.”
The airline staff member, a woman in her mid-forties with a patient smile that indicated she had dealt with many a Sheldon Cooper before, looked up from her computer. “Yes, sir? How can I help you?”
Sheldon pointed at the group that had just been whisked away. “I noticed that those passengers were given priority treatment. I assume that’s because one of them is pregnant?”
The woman nodded. “Yes, sir. We offer priority boarding for expectant mothers, among others.”
“Excellent!” Sheldon exclaimed, pleased with this revelation. He placed a hand on Amy’s shoulder, gesturing toward her with the other. “My wife is also pregnant. I believe we qualify for the same privileges.”
The woman looked at Amy, who was now staring blankly at the floor, trying her best to conserve energy. She seemed skeptical as she sized up Amy, who at 14 weeks, was only just starting to show.
Sheldon noticed the hesitation and quickly added, “I know she doesn’t look it, but I can assure you she is definitely pregnant.”
Amy rolled her eyes, now fully aware of the conversation. “Sheldon, it’s fine. We can just wait.”
But Sheldon wasn’t deterred. “Nonsense, Amy. You’re carrying precious cargo! We should be afforded the same accommodations as the other passengers.”
The airline employee, clearly trying to maintain her composure, smiled politely. “I’m sorry, sir. Without visible proof, it’s a bit difficult for us to make exceptions. However, if your wife has any documentation, we can—”
Sheldon interrupted, his voice taking on the tone he used when explaining simple concepts to undergraduates. “I am a highly respected physicist and a Nobel laureate. I assure you, I would not fabricate something as important as my wife’s pregnancy for mere airport privileges. Besides, I’ve read extensively about pregnancy, and her symptoms are textbook.”
Amy sighed, rubbing her temples. “Sheldon, please, let’s just—”
“Do you need me to fetch her medical records?” Sheldon offered, already pulling out his phone to search for the contact information for Amy’s obstetrician.
The airline employee held up her hands in surrender. “Sir, that won’t be necessary. I can see you’re very... passionate about this. We can arrange for you to have priority boarding. I just need you to proceed to the gate, and they’ll handle everything from there.”
Sheldon beamed, satisfied with the outcome. “Thank you. You see, Amy? Persistence pays off.”
Amy forced a smile, too tired to argue. “Yes, Sheldon. You’re a real hero.”
With the matter settled, they made their way to the gate. As they sat down to wait for their flight, Sheldon couldn’t resist going over the day’s schedule with Amy, who was trying to rest her eyes.
“We’ll be in Texas by noon,” Sheldon said, his voice laced with excitement. “Just in time for Mom’s famous cornbread stuffing. I’ve already informed her about your pregnancy, so she’s planning a special menu to ensure you’re getting the appropriate nutrients.”
Amy nodded absently, her mind more focused on getting some sleep. “That’s nice, Sheldon.”
“She’s also reserved the most comfortable bed for you,” Sheldon continued, unfazed by Amy’s lack of enthusiasm. “And I’ve instructed her to keep the thermostat at a precise temperature so you won’t overheat. Pregnant women tend to get warmer, you know.”
Amy opened one eye to look at him. “I know, Sheldon. I’m the one who’s pregnant.”
“Indeed you are,” Sheldon said, smiling proudly. He then glanced around the gate area, noticing other passengers slowly making their way toward the boarding line. His eyes lit up as he remembered their priority status. “I’ll go inform the gate agent that we’ll be taking advantage of the priority boarding.”
Before Amy could protest, Sheldon was already on his way to the counter. She sighed, resigning herself to the fact that she had married a man who took great pleasure in adhering to rules—and ensuring everyone else did too.
A few minutes later, Sheldon returned, looking pleased with himself. “All set! We’ll be the first ones on the plane.”
“Great,” Amy mumbled, her head now resting against the back of the chair. “I’ve always wanted to sit on a cramped airplane longer than necessary.”
Sheldon didn’t catch the sarcasm. “I know, right? It’s the best way to ensure we get our seats adjusted to the optimal recline before everyone else gets settled.”
Soon enough, the announcement came over the loudspeakers, calling for priority boarding. Sheldon immediately stood up, gently nudging Amy to follow.
As they made their way down the jet bridge, Sheldon held onto Amy’s arm, making a point to tell each airline staff member they passed that his wife was pregnant. Amy, meanwhile, kept her eyes forward, trying to ignore the amused or pitying looks they received.
Once they were settled into their seats, Sheldon immediately started adjusting everything—seatbelts, armrests, even the overhead air nozzle. Amy watched him with a mixture of affection and exasperation.
“Sheldon,” Amy finally said, her voice softer now that they were alone. “You don’t have to make such a big deal out of this. I’m pregnant, not an invalid.”
Sheldon paused, considering her words. “I know, Amy. I just want to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. It’s my responsibility as your husband.”
Amy’s annoyance softened a bit. Despite his overwhelming nature, she knew Sheldon meant well. “I appreciate it, Sheldon. But maybe next time, we can just... go with the flow a little more?”
Sheldon looked at her in disbelief. "Go with the flow? Amy! What’s the point of special privileges and priority boarding if expectant mothers like you don’t exercise our rights?”
Amy rolled her eyes. “You mean my rights?”
Sheldon frowned. “Oh, you know what I mean!”
Taking a deep breath, Amy tried to explain again, this time more patiently. “Sheldon, I get that you might not fully grasp the concept of ‘going with the flow,’ but sometimes I just want to be like any other passenger and not be put in the spotlight as ‘the pregnant lady with her crazy husband who needs to board first.’”
“But you are pregnant,” he said seriously. “I have the results,” he added matter-of-factly, starting to pull out his phone as he did earlier at the counter.
Amy pushed his hand away from his pockets, narrowing her eyes. She realized her husband didn’t quite get it yet. “I know I’m pregnant. But maybe I just want to feel normal for now. Sooner or later, I’ll start showing, and people are going to start staring and asking if I need help every five seconds. Until then, let me enjoy just being another person instead of ‘the pregnant lady.’”
Sheldon nodded slowly, taking in her words. “I understand. You don’t want to be treated differently until it’s absolutely necessary.”
Amy smiled, feeling a bit of relief. “Exactly. I love that you’re trying so hard to take care of me, but I don’t need everyone else doing that too, at least not for a few more months.”
“So, when the time comes, we—I mean, you —can start exercising your right as a pregnant lady?”
Amy smiled kindly. “I’ll think about it when the time comes.”
Sheldon frowned slightly at her vague answer but nodded nonetheless. “Okay. I’ll try to ‘go with the flow.’ For you.”
Amy leaned over and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. “Thank you. And for the record, I do appreciate all the effort you’re putting in.”
Sheldon blushed slightly, adjusting his position in the seat. “You’re welcome.”
As the plane began to taxi down the runway, Sheldon took Amy’s hand, squeezing it gently. “I’m really looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with you and our family.”
Amy squeezed back, feeling a surge of affection for her quirky husband. “Me too, Sheldon. Me too.”
As the plane’s engines revved up for takeoff, they sat together in comfortable silence, knowing that no matter how quirky their journey might be, they’d always find their way together.
The End
