Jed turned off Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and wandered into the kitchen to get a sandwich. Garak might actually be his favourite character, he thought. Even though the Cardassian was sneaky and talked mean, he acted kind (especially to those kids) and also never let anyone take advantage of him (especially Gul Dukat). Jed appreciated that. Also Bashir seemed like a cool person to be friends with, so Garak had that going for him too.
Rose was on the telephone with Ara when he got to the kitchen.
“Your mom’s considering letting them do a reality tv show about her life?”
That would be fun, Jed thought. Ara’s mom, Barbie, lived life to the full and was really rich, too. She was nice to everyone.
“Haha, like the Kardashians? No, I don’t think so!” Rose said on the phone.
Wait, what? Jed thought. There’s a reality tv show about the Cardassians? Is Garak on it?
“What are they going to call it, Life in the Dream House?” Rose laughed. “That would be a little on the nose, wouldn’t it?”
“Wait, Rose,” Jed interrupted. “Is there a show about the Cardassians?”
“What? (Just a sec, Ara.) What, Jed, Cardassians?” Rose sounded confused, but Jed really wanted to know if there was reality tv with aliens. That sounded way more interesting than the regular kind.
“Yeah, you said Ara’s mom’s getting a reality tv show like the Cardassians,” Jed clarified patiently.
Rose laughed again. “Oh, no, sorry, Jed! I said Kardashians, it’s a family of tall dramatic sisters. Not wrinkly sneaky aliens.”
“Bummer! I think that would be way better.” Jed went to make his pb&j sandwich while Rose went on talking to Ara. As he poured himself some milk, she came over and put her arm around his shoulders.
“Ara agrees with you,” she said, smiling down at him. Jed smiled back up at her. Life really was awesome with Rose, even if the Cardassians didn’t get a reality tv show.
