The Black Queen

Summary:

Jed saves Anya from a zombie nightmare. Train to Busan is not for five year olds!

Notes:

For AU-gust day 4 and 5, zombie apocalypse and chess. Back to one of my favourite crossovers!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Aaaaaaaaaaaa!”

Jed looked around. Gault had asked him for help, as a Knight of the Order of the Dreaming, with a dreamer who was trapped in a nightmare. This was a pretty bad one, he had to admit. The dreamer, a little girl with pink hair with two funny little black hats on the sides, was running screaming from a horde of bloody zombies.

“Come here, I’ll save you!” he yelled. It was never not exciting to be the one who could save people, these days. He was so glad Gault was still helping him be a hero.

The little girl ran to him, crying. “I pwomise no more peeking at Chain to Busan,” she vowed as he put her behind him and faced the zombies.

“Turn back! I, Jed, Knight of the Order of the Dreaming, command you!” They didn’t turn back. Of course not, they were zombies. Their brains were the first to go.

“This is your last warning!” He drew the Dream Sword from its scabbard.

“You have to play it like Chest!” the girl called from behind him.

“What?” he asked, taking the guard position.

“Chest!” she repeated. “Anya is the pawn and shishi is the bishop and haha is the Black Queen!” Oh, chess, Jed realized.

“It’s okay,” he yelled back, “I’m a Knight!”

Then the zombies were upon them, and with a few sweeps of his sword, he cut them all down.

“Okay, now to get you to safety.” He took the little girl’s hand—oh yeah, she said her name was Anya. They ran for safety in the direction the zombies had come from, and when they got there, Anya suddenly started to float and glow and sparkle and spin.

“Now Anya is Black Queen too!” she shouted excitedly, throwing her little fists in the air. Lightning bolts flew from them, zapping the remaining zombies scattered across the dreamscape.

“Woohoo!” Jed yelled, punching the air and dancing around.

“This dream is over,” Gault whispered, putting her arm proudly around his shoulders as Anya triumphantly faded away. “Great work, Jed.”
