Maxxine adjusted her jersey in front of the mirror, tying her dreadlocks into a high ponytail, the undercut on the side of her head giving her a fierce edge. Her eyebrow piercing caught the light, and she smirked at the sight of herself, ready for another game. The gym was already buzzing with the energy of her teammates warming up, the squeak of sneakers against the polished wood floor filling the air.
Inside the locker room, Brittney stood in front of a mirror as well, her reflection staring back at her with equal parts annoyance and unease. The cheerleader uniform clung to her in all the right places, but it was the vibrant blue that had her wrinkling her nose. "This is ridiculous—the colours don’t even fit me," she muttered under her breath, turning this way and that to inspect the outfit.
Beside her, Tina leaned against the wall, arms crossed, and a smirk playing on her lips. "That’s what you get for being a total bitch, sweetheart," she teased, not unkindly, but with that familiar bite that Brittney had grown used to.
Brittney groaned, running a hand through her straightened hair before tugging it into a high ponytail that swung down her back. "I'm not going out in this; no way in hell." Her blue eyes blazed with defiance.
"Like hell you are," Tina retorted, her grin widening as she effortlessly threw Brittney over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes, carrying her out of the locker room like she weighed nothing at all.
Brittney’s protests fell on deaf ears as Tina marched her toward the gym. "Out of all things, she had to choose a sports club!" Brittney huffed as Tina finally set her down.
Tina gave her a playful nudge. "Baby, this isn’t all that bad—after all, weren’t you the one who came up with this bet?"
Brittney bit her lip, her face flushing with embarrassment. She crossed her arms over her chest, trying to ignore the knowing grin Tina gave her.
"I’m impressed that you still found a perfectly matching scrunchie for your outfit," Tina added with a laugh.
"Why of course," Brittney shot back, though her heart wasn’t quite in it. "I have an accessory for any occasion."
Just then, the sound of sneakers squeaking against the floor drew Brittney’s attention to the court, turning her head like some hawk. Maxxine was there, being flanked by Bobbie and PJ, commanding the ball with an effortless grace that took Brittney’s breath away. Brittney had never imagined all three of them would end up in a basketball club; she had always pegged at least one of them as a tech geek or something.
Tina shoved a pair of pom-poms into Brittney’s hands. "You’ll need them. Go, cheer-girl, go!"
Brittney scowled, holding the pom-poms as if they were foreign objects, but she couldn’t take her eyes off Maxxine. The intensity with which Maxxine played, the way her muscles flexed under her dark skin, the way her dreadlocks swayed with every move—it was mesmerizing.
Maxxine was too focused on the game to notice Brittney at first, but Bobbie caught sight of her standing there, a grin spreading across her face. "Maxxine! Look who came to cheer you on!"
The moment Maxxine turned and saw Brittney, it was as if the world around her blurred into insignificance. Their eyes locked, and Brittney felt her chest tighten, her breath catching in her throat.
Was this really what Maxxine looks like? The pom-poms almost fell out of her hands, face flushed. She’d seen Maxxine countless times before, but now, under the harsh gym lights, she seemed to glow with a radiance that made Brittney’sheart race.
God, she’s beautiful, Maxxine thought, lips slightly parted as if wanting to shout in her direction.
She stood frozen, her gaze locked onto Brittney, completely oblivious to the ball hurtling toward her. "Max, watch out!" PJ’s warning came too late, and the ball struck Maxxine square in the face, knocking her to the floor.
The sharp blast of the referee's whistle cut through the gym, echoing off the walls and bringing the game to a sudden halt. "Eyes on the ball, Maximiliana!"
Maxxine groaned, her hand instinctively going to her face where the basketball had struck her. The sting was still fresh, her cheek throbbing slightly under her touch. "Sorry, ref," she mumbled, her voice muffled by her embarrassment. She pushed herself up onto her elbows, the world spinning slightly as she did.
Bobbie was already there, grinning down at her, hand extended. "Jeez, Goof, cheerleaders are supposed to cheer, not distract," she teased, her chuckle soft but full of amusement. There was a playful glint in her eyes as she helped Maxxine to her feet, the two of them sharing a brief, knowing look.
Maxxine’s gaze drifted up to the stands, where Brittney stood frozen, her expression a mix of shock and concern. Her wide eyes locked onto Maxxine’s, and for a moment, the noise of the gym, and the lingering sting on her face, all faded away. There was something in Brittney’s face—worry, maybe even guilt—that made Maxxine’s heart skip a beat. Next to her, Tina was doubled over, laughing so hard she could barely breathe, but Brittney didn’t even glance at her, her focus entirely on Maxxine.
Maxxine could feel her pulse quicken, her breathing uneven as she wiped her lips with her arm, trying to steady herself.
"Come on, dude, let’s get changed," Bobbie said, breaking the moment as she gave Maxxine a firm slap on the back. The sudden contact made Maxxine gasp in surprise, snapping her back to reality. She nodded, though her mind was still reeling from the intensity of Brittney’s gaze.
As they started to walk off the court, PJ fell into step behind them, her eyes still flickering back to Brittney. "I must say, Brittney looks really good in our uniform colours," she commented. She glanced over at Maxxine, who was now sipping from her water bottle, trying to cool the flush in her cheeks.
"Mhm," Maxxine responded, her mind still lingering on the sight of Brittney’s ocean-coloured eyes, wide and worried, etched into her memory. She couldn’t shake the image, the way those eyes had softened, the concern written all over her face. It was as if the entire game, the entire gym, had fallen away, leaving just the two of them in that moment.
"Alright, Maxxie, we’ll be heading out now. We still have one more class left with PJ," Bobbie announced, tugging up her mismatched socks with a quick, habitual motion, PJ giggling beside her.
Maxxine managed a small smile, pulling herself together as she turned back to her friends. "Okay, see you guys later then—I’ll be in our dorm," she replied, her voice steady, though her thoughts were anything but.
As Bobbie and PJ left, their laughter trailing off as the locker room door swung shut behind them, Maxxine was left alone with her thoughts. The weight of Brittney’s gaze, the warmth of the connection they had shared, lingered with her, making her heart beat just a little bit faster.
She debated whether to shower there or back in her dorm when a sudden presence made her jump.
"Bre!" Maxxine gasped, hand on her chest as she turned to find Brittney standing behind her locker door. "You scared the shit out of me."
Brittney looked away, her usual confidence wavering. "It’s Brittney, but... are you okay? I mean, your face... did you get hurt or...?"
Maxxine couldn’t help but smile at Brittney’s concern, even if it was poorly masked by her usual sass. "I’m okay, don’t worry. It’s all good now." Maxxine reassured her, the burn from the basketball still lingering on her face.
Brittney’s eyes darted away again, her voice softer. "That ball should’ve ended you." Ah, there she is.
Maxxine laughed, the sound filling the small space between them. "I’m tougher than I look."
They stood like this for a while, kind of staring at each other before Max’s eyes moved down to take a closer look at Bre’s cheer outfit, taking in how the blue contrasted against her pale skin, and how it hugged her curves in all the right places.
"My eyes are up here, Maximiliana," Brittney chided, but there was no real bite to her words. If anything, she looked flustered, her cheeks tinged with pink.
"No, no, it’s just... you look good, like really good ," Maxxine admitted, her voice dropping to a low murmur. Brittney’sblush deepened, and for once, she seemed at a loss for words.
"Blue, it fits you really well," Maxxine continued, taking a step to the side to take a look at Brittney’s back, holding her breath. Bre then turned around suddenly, standing a bit too close for her own liking, their noses nearly touching.
Maxxine let out a soft sigh, Bre trying to catch all of it. They made eye contact again, Maxxine blinked quickly a few times before taking a short step back, "Sorry I didn’t mean to star—"
Brittney then let go of both her pom-poms, planting her hands gently on Maxxine’s cheeks before pressing their lips together.
The kiss started tentative, a soft brush of lips that sent a shiver down Maxxine's spine. She hesitated for just a second, the unexpected tenderness catching her off guard, but then she leaned into it, her hands instinctively finding Brittney’swaist.
Brittney’s lips were warm, and Maxxine could taste a hint of the strawberry lip gloss she always seemed to wear. It was sweet and intoxicating, and she couldn’t get enough.
Brittney deepened the kiss, her hands moving to cradle the back of Maxxine's head, fingers threading through the dark, soft tendrils of her dreadlocks. She pulled Maxxine closer, their bodies pressing together, the heat between them building with every passing second. Maxxine felt Brittney's heartbeat against her chest, fast and unsteady, mirroring the wild thrum of her own pulse.
Maxxine responded with equal hunger, her hands sliding up Brittney’s back, feeling the smooth skin beneath the cheerleader uniform. Brittney gasped against her mouth as Maxxine’s hands roamed lower, resting just above the curve of her hips, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them. The world around them seemed to fade away; all Maxxine could think about was the way Brittney’s lips felt on hers, the soft, needy sounds Brittney was making in the back of her throat, driving her crazy.
Brittney’s hands moved from Maxxine’s hair to her shoulders, gripping the fabric of her jersey, tugging her even closer as if she couldn’t get enough. Her nails dug in slightly, just enough to send a thrill of sensation through Maxxine, making her moan softly against Brittney’s lips. The sound seemed to encourage Brittney, who tilted her head slightly, deepening the kiss, her tongue brushing against Maxxine’s lips, seeking entrance.
Maxxine parted her lips, allowing Brittney’s tongue to slide against hers, the kiss growing more heated, more desperate. It was as if they were trying to pour every unsaid word, every repressed feeling, into this moment. Maxxine's hands roamed up Brittney’s back, fingers tracing the line of her spine, making Brittney shiver and press closer still.
Their kisses grew more intense, more urgent, lips moving together with a fervour that made Maxxine’s head spin. Brittney’s hands were everywhere, moving from Maxxine’s shoulders to her neck, to her hair, pulling her in, and then running down her arms, leaving a trail of goosebumps in their wake. Maxxine felt like she was drowning in Brittney, the scent of her vanilla perfume mixing with the sweet taste of her lips, overwhelming her senses.
Brittney pressed Maxxine back against the lockers with a gentle thud, her hands sliding down Maxxine’s chest, exploring every inch of her body. She could feel Maxxine’s heart pounding beneath her palm, could feel the way Maxxine’s breath hitched every time she moved her hands, and it sent a thrill through her, knowing she had this effect on her. Maxxine let out a soft moan as Brittney’s fingers traced the line of her jaw, her thumb brushing across Maxxine’s lower lip before Brittney leaned in to capture her lips again in a searing kiss.
Maxxine’s hands found their way to Brittney’s hips, gripping them tightly as she pulled Brittney against her, their bodies moulding together perfectly. She could feel Brittney’s breath against her cheek, hot and fast, matching the rhythm of her racing pulse. The kiss turned slower, more deliberate, each movement of their lips and tongues sending sparks of electricity through them both.
Maxxine broke away for just a moment, gasping for breath, her forehead resting against Brittney’s. She could feel the warmth of Brittney’s breath against her lips, could see the way Brittney’s eyes fluttered open, blue and intense, staring into her own with a mix of emotions that made Maxxine’s heart skip a beat. "Bre..." she whispered, but she didn’t know what to say, couldn’t find the words to express what she was feeling.
Brittney just shook her head, silencing her with another kiss, softer this time, more tender, but still full of the same intensity that had left them both breathless. Maxxine could feel Brittney’s hands sliding up her chest again, fingers curling around the fabric of her jersey, pulling her closer until there was nothing but the feeling of their bodies pressed together, of their lips moving in perfect sync.
They kissed like that for what felt like forever, time losing all meaning as they got lost in each other. Maxxine could feel the heat pooling low in her belly, her body responding to every touch, every brush of Brittney’s lips, every flick of her tongue. Brittney’s hands roamed up and down her back, her nails leaving light trails along Maxxine’s skin, making her shiver.
The intensity of their kisses ebbed and flowed, like waves crashing against the shore, sometimes rough and desperate, sometimes soft and slow. Maxxine felt like she could drown in the sensation, in the way Brittney’s body felt pressed against hers, in the way their kisses grew more fevered, more desperate as if they couldn’t get enough of each other.
Then, just as Maxxine felt like she might lose herself completely, the sound of the locker room door creaking open pulled them both back to reality.
The sharp noise made them freeze, and they broke apart with a start, panting, eyes wide and hearts racing. They looked at each other, panic flashing in their eyes as they scrambled to adjust their clothes, to regain some semblance of normalcy. Heavy footsteps approached from behind the lockers, and Maxxine’s heart raced as she realized who it was.
"Bre? Bre, are you in here?" Tina’s voice rang out, her footsteps echoing off the walls.
Maxxine and Brittney exchanged a quick, panicked glance, before Brittney quickly adjusted her skirt and hair, her ponytail swaying as she hurriedly tried to compose herself. Maxxine did the same, smoothing down her shirt, trying to catch her breath and calm her racing heart.
"There you are, I’ve been looking all ove- oh hey Maxxine," Tina appeared around the corner, her eyes flicking between the two of them. "What is going on, you guys? Did I interrupt something?" she asked, a knowing grin spreading across her face.
Brittney shot her a glare, pushing her toward the exit. "Shut up, will ya! We were just talking."
"Sure you were," Tina replied, her laughter echoing down the hallway as Brittney ushered her out.
But before she left, Brittney turned back, her expression unreadable. She shoved a crumpled piece of paper into Maxxine’s hand before hurrying after Tina.
Maxxine unfolded the paper, her heart skipping a beat as she read the note.
