Work Text:

Beauty. That was one way to describe her.

There were probably a lot of better words to describe how she felt about her, but beauty would make things simple in that sense.

-

Ever since Lanolin joined restoration she felt like a complete outcast. She joined when it was called “the resistance”. During the time where metal and chaos ruled the world for a long while.

Even after all of that, she kept on moving forward. She wanted to help people. Help the people who couldn’t help themselves. She didn’t want to feel or remember those days again. So she just had to keep moving forward.

But when she inevitably moved up her ranks to be able to work directly with the director of the restoration, Jewel, she would obviously feel nervous. I mean, who wouldn’t? It's like getting sent to the principal's office in a way.

It wasn’t so bad really though. She was able to give suggestions to improve, help with the more classified paperwork, and a lot more she realized.

Though with all those aside for the moment, she even got to know more about the dir- Jewel more. Like how she really liked wings, like, a lot. She’s also a museum curator. (That explains all the rocks around her office).

But, she wasn't here to learn about all these facts about her life. She had a job to do, but she wouldn’t stop trying to make small talk. It was all so. Strange to her really. How could you just talk about what you did on Tuesday when there's an evil madman out there terrorizing our world?

It's not like she hated it no. It was just something she couldn’t really understand. This never stopped. It was just a new step to her routine that she had to listen to her talk. Though, there were some stories or facts she would tell that would give her a small reaction.

As more time passed she grew to actually enjoy these talks. From little small chitchats to pass time to talking all the time together when they worked. Hell, it might have actually made working faster.

The more they talked the more Lanolin grew to really appreciate the director. (Jewel. Her name is Jewel. She had to get more used to calling her by her name.) Speaking of calling her director, Jewel did find that a little amusing. I mean, it was really a habit for everyone to call her director since she was in charge.

She just wanted to be called Jewel really. She had to keep a mental note every time she called her director. Even with those little mistakes, Jewel found it funny about her. She found her so serious all the time. All robotic and not being able to let loose. It wasn’t a bad thing though she noted. It was okay to be all serious to get stuff done, but you couldn’t do that forever. It was okay to just be yourself and enjoy those little moments when you could. (Little moments huh?)

This wasn’t meant to be something mean spirited though. It was more of an observation that Jewel had caught on while they chatted. She mentioned that Lanolin never really talked much about what she used to do when she joined restoration. What her life was like before everything.

That was a topic for a different time she knew, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t want to try and make Lanolin feel like she couldn’t talk. She just wanted her to feel welcomed really. Just like all the other restoration volunteers.

And so with that in mind, Lanolin did try to be more open with Jewel (And everyone at restoration in general). Though it wasn’t much, she was able to talk more about her life.

It wasn't an instance however, it took her some time to just talk about anything really. The first thing she was able to talk about is how she used to work on a farm. (Well, it was mostly her father, but she liked to help him a lot).

With these little bits of information, they were able to bond some more. It was nice really, still felt really off and strange to Lanolin, but it was nice nonetheless. But, of course, as one continues to spend time with someone things do seem to change.

It started with just accidental starings at Jewel, which Lanolin wasn’t even completely aware of. She zoned out quite a bit seemingly also. Which wasn’t ideal when trying to get work done. It was really out of character for her frankly, but I’m sure it wouldn’t get worse, right?

-

It did, in fact, get worse.

-

It all kinda just clicked in Lanolin’s head once she realized why she started to feel this way. It was because of her. It was Jewel. She couldn’t pinpoint exactly why, but she narrowed these.. thoughts to her.

Maybe it was the way she dressed, the way she just seemed to shine when light reflected off of her. She was a beetle after all so her shell could easily reflect and shine when light came across it. She was just like a diamond in the sky. She made her feel so.. High? (Surely there was a better way to describe that.)

She was just. Beautiful really. Yes, that was one way to describe her. Just everything about her Lanolin was somehow starstruck by. Flaws and all she found her lovely to be around. She was no adventurer to tell crazy stories she has been on, but she had stories to tell alright. In a way Lanolin really liked that about her.

From helping to get restoration back in shape to saving dozens of campers from a forest fire with her friends she was just amazing really. Sure, she could think of better words to describe all of this, but keeping it simple for now would be better.

Overall she was really, really beautiful. In no way would she tell these thoughts and new found feelings to her anytime soon (or ever), but this was how she felt. It felt good really. She wanted to spend more time with her, get to know her even more, talk to her, but she had a job to do.

These feelings or thoughts wouldn’t go away anytime soon and Lanolin knew that. It was fresh, new, like a flower blooming. She wasn’t going to let this flower die anytime soon. She would focus on the main task at hand, but for now she knew that she liked her. She liked her a lot.
