“Mmm... ’t busy ‘tm...ow…”

“Hmm?”

Foster shifted in her sleep. Grunted something unintelligible.

Then, heaved a big sigh. “M’girlfr… mso ‘nlove…”

L broke out in a wide grin. “You love me, baby?”

Tacos… taco trucks… three taco trucks…”

“Babe, this is just super fucking cliché, can we not talk about it?”

“Why not? It’s okay to be nervous, but I just want to show you that it’s fine.”

“It’s not fine, what if she doesn’t like me?”

“I already told Ava about how hot and badass and incredible you are.”

Exactly!” Alex huffed. “She thinks I’m this awesome person, when—”

“—when you are. Now, come on. Let’s go.”

Alex took a shaky breath, nodded, and reached for the car door.

Audrey smirked.

“You’re kind of cute when you’re nervous.”

3

I’m home!”

“Hey, baby!” L appeared in the doorway and smiled. “Long day at work?”

Foster sighed, dropped her bag down by the door, and slid her back down against it, until she was sitting.  “I’m so tired…”

“I’m sorry, baby. Come on…” L reached for Foster’s shirt.

The actress sighed. “Babe, I don’t think I have the energy for—”

“—Come on, you dork. I drew you a bath.”

“You… you did?”

“Mmhm. With rose oil.”

“I fucking love rose oil.”

“I’m stuck… help…”

Audrey sighed. “What did you do this time?”

“Uhh…”

The doctor turned into the bedroom, and sighed. “Now, what the hell is that?”

“It’s embarrassing.”

“It usually is, yeah.”

“Don’t mock me!”

I’m not the one with my head stuck in the wrong end of a sweater.”

Alex grumbled something underneath her breath. “Just fucking help me please!”

Audrey laughed, and moved to free Alex from her textile prison. When the sweater was finally in place, she frowned when Alex spun around to hide her face.

“What’s going on?”

The detective hesitated – before turning around.

FUTURE WIFE OF A DOCTOR

“I found it online…” She mumbled. “I wanted to… ugh. Never mind.”

“If you don’t wear that to that networking event next week, I’m breaking up with you.”

5

“Hey, Monroe, did you get checked out? That scrape looks nasty.”

“It’s just a scrape, Frank. I’m fine – there’s people worse off. I gotta—”

“You gotta sit your ass down and get someone to check you out.”

Alex rolled her eyes.

Frank shook his head, and walked up to a parked aid car. “Hey – can one of you check out my partner?”

“Frank, what the fuck, I just said—"

“--You don’t think you matter, dumbass. But there are people out there that care about you. So shut the hell up, answer their questions, and go home after.”

6

“Oh my god, that’s Foster Devries!”

“FOSTER! Can we get a selfie? We’re such big fans, we love you!”

Foster stopped, halfway through comparing ice cream brands, and looked up. “Huh?”

The two girls in front of her laughed nervously. “We’re fans, can we get a picture?”

“Oh. Uh… sure!”

“Oh my god, thank you so much, you literally mean so much to us!”

“Yeah, no problem… I’m happy I could make your day better.” Foster put the ice creams down and posed for the photo.

One of the girls had tears in her eyes.

“You have to stop.”

“Babe, it’s not like that. I don’t do it because I need it. I…”

Upon Audrey’s sceptic look, Alex sighed. “It’s just to unwind after a long day.”

“It’s every day, Alex. Every night, every lunch, every dinner… It’s too much. It’s not healthy.”

“Do you want me to fucking prove it? Watch – I won’t drink for an entire week! It’s easy!”

Audrey pressed her lips together in a thin line. “Okay.”

The detective huffed. “You don’t think I can do it. You think I’m a dumbass.”

“One of those, yeah.”

“So – what do I get if I win?”

Win? This isn’t a fucking game. I don’t want to see you drink yourself to death.”

“Whatever, Audrey.”

Alex slammed the door behind her as she left.

8

“Are you sick?”

“Hmm? Oh, no. My head just hurts.”

Barbara frowned. “Since when?”

“Oh – since this afternoon. Lots of loud noises at work, I’m a bit overstimulated. Sorry, I didn’t mean to be quiet or anything…”

“Here…” Barbara rummaged through her cupboards, and finally fished out a pill bottle. “These work miracles, sweetie. Take one, and tell me if you feel better in twenty minutes.”

“Thanks, Barbara.”

9

“Hey, Ava – delivery for you.”

The paramedic frowned as one of her coworkers pulled out a bouquet from behind his back.

“Huh?”

“Yeah, these were just delivered to the station. Your name on the card. Didn’t open it though, promise.”

Ava reached for the flowers, and flipped the card open.

Fuck – Audrey, stay with me… stay with me…”

“W-what happened… what happened…”

“I think someone hit our car – ow – baby… hey, keep your eyes open…”

“My head hurts…”

“I know. I know, it’s okay, help is coming. I called them, okay? You just gotta keep those pretty eyes open because… b-because I can’t live without them. You gotta give me your eyes, baby…”

Eyes…”

“Yeah, your eyes. Let me take a nice look at them – that’s it… that’s it, baby, you’re doing so well…”

Ugh…”

“They’re the prettiest eyes in the world, Aud. Keep looking at me. Keep looking – they’re coming…”
