Chapter Text
Stressed.
That was the only word to describe your state, which is why this evening you walked to one of the several parks in Blüdhaven. Some article you read however long ago– Being Surrounded By Nature Improves Our Mood – was floating around your head the entire day at work. It was the only thing that kept you sane as your day just got increasingly crazy, and honestly, you were one more bad incident from ripping your hair out and screaming. Was it the best idea to go when the sun was setting in the city of Blüdhaven? Absolutely not. But you desperately needed this and wanted some kind of escape from your world.
Walking to the park took just 5 minutes of your time, so the sun was barely there, a beautiful orange and pink, which brought you a small sense of tranquility. You spotted a bench next to a tree that was one of the only ones that still had its green leaves. “Thank god,” you muttered under your breath. You walked over and sat down, grateful that autumn had yet to claim the tree next to you.
But before you could relax entirely, you rummaged through your messy bag, filled with your computer, books, and cash, and grabbed your phone to turn it off. And then closed your eyes, breathing deeply in the chilly air and trying to ignore the person on your left speaking loudly over the phone.

You didn’t know how much time had passed, you hadn’t fallen asleep, but instead completely absorbed by the sound of your breath and the leaves rustling. You achieved possibly the best zen moment of your life, but once you came back down from the clouds, it was too quiet. There was no sound of the person on the phone, and even the leaves sounded…different. The eeriness made you open your eyes out of unease, and you were met with the sight of a practically empty park, except for a few tall people walking in your direction.
“Fucking hell,” you swear under your breath, heart beating a little faster. You weren’t entirely sure if they were coming towards you or for something past you, but just in case you tried to keep your face nonchalant, and got your phone out of your bag.
Come on, come on! You pleaded silently to your phone to hurry as you turned it back on, but the loading screen just reflected back your worried face and the darkened sky behind you.
“Hey there beautiful,” a spine-chilling deep voice pulled your face from your phone, and you saw clearly each of the four men, “I was hoping we could talk to you for a few minutes. Do you have some time to spare?”
The talking man stood right in front of you, and the only thing going through your head was a continuous fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. Even while slouching, the man towered over you, and his menacing smile made you expect the worst. The other three men stood on either side of him, blocking your escape.
You were forced to talk to him, but at least you had a card up your sleeve.
“Perdóneme, señor,” you started, speaking Spanish to throw him off, “pero no te entiendo. No sé cómo hablar en inglés. Y si me disculpas, tengo que irme a casa.”
The man’s eyes widened and creepy smile faded as he registered your speech as well as you getting up off the bench, trying to leave. But it only lasted for a few seconds. He quickly grabbed your arm and an even more terrifying grin appeared.
You were much closer to his face now, not by choice, so you forced your attention elsewhere. Anywhere else. But you couldn’t ignore him if you wanted to; his eyes bore into you, his grip on your arm was sweaty and too tight. Pain was shooting through your arm, and his cologne was overpowering and disgusting.
“Gerry,” one of the men standing behind said, “get out the translator.”
Gerry, taller than the man in front of you, pulled out a phone from his pocket. The few seconds that it took for him to get to the translate app and type his message were filled with silence.
The seconds felt like years, and the sound of your heart racing filled your ears. You couldn’t just stand around so you tested your luck once again.
“Escúchame bien culeros,” you said, trying to keep your voice as even as possible, “te lo dije. No hablo inglés. Así que suéltame. Déjame en paz. Por favor .”
But your alleged incomprehension was unimportant to them, and the man named Gerry lifted his phone towards your face. Your eyes started to water as you read the small, plain text.
Ven con nosotros.
Come with us.

“No.” You said in your firmest voice, now trying to twist out from the man’s grip.
“ Yes .” The man had no patience for your retaliation and jerked you even closer to him.
“Vete a la verga!” You shouted. And with your bag still on the shoulder of your free hand, you swiftly let it slide down, gripping it with your hand, and brought it down over his head with all your strength. Eat shit you thought, your teeth clenched in anger.
“You-!” But the man didn’t even have a chance to finish his sentence when a black baton flew into the back of his head and then ricocheted into Gerry’s face.
When his grip on you loosened, you quickly took the chance to pull away. And with your eyes, followed the direction in which the baton had come. A figure soon became visible.
A suit as dark as the night. A bright blue symbol in the shape of a bird.
It was Nightwing.
