Chapter Text
The sky above Lux Aurea was a deep shade of twilight, the ruins casting long shadows across the camp. The remnants of grandeur and tragedy stood as silent witnesses to their union. Despite the somber surroundings, there was a sense of hope and resilience in the air.
Callum stood nervously, adjusting his jacket and scarf for what felt like the hundredth time. He glanced at Ezran, who gave him an encouraging smile and a thumbs-up. Callum chuckled softly, grateful for his brother’s unwavering support.
Rayla, meanwhile, stood a short distance away, her eyes fixed on the horizon. Her parents were gathered nearby, Lain and Tiadrin exchanging worried glances, while Runaan stood with his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. Ethari, however, had a gentle smile, giving her a reassuring nod.
“Are you ready?” Kazi’s voice broke the silence, gentle but firm. The linguist held a worn, yet beautifully crafted book, prepared to officiate the ceremony.
Callum took a deep breath, his eyes meeting Rayla’s. She gave him a small, reassuring smile, her lilac eyes sparkling with unshed tears. “Ready as I’ll ever be,” he replied, his voice steady.
As they stepped towards each other, the world seemed to fade away. All the battles, the fears, and the uncertainties melted in the warmth of their shared gaze. Callum reached out, taking her hands in his, eyes flitting up briefly, admiring the horn cuffs Ethari had crafted.
Kazi began to speak, their voice carrying over the quiet camp. “We are gathered here, in a time of great trial, to witness the union of Callum and Rayla. In the face of darkness, their love shines as a beacon of hope.”
Rayla squeezed Callum’s hands, her touch grounding him. He smiled, the tension in his shoulders easing.
“I never imagined we’d be here,” Callum whispered, just for her to hear. “But there’s no one else I’d rather be with.”
Rayla’s smile widened, a tear slipping down her cheek. “Me neither. This is perfect.”
When it was time for their vows, Callum’s heart pounded in his chest. He took a deep breath and began, his voice clear and unwavering. “Rayla, from the moment we met, I knew there was something special about you. You’re so strong, and fast, and beautiful, and so true to your pure heart. You’ve been my strength, my one truth, and my love. My everything. My world.
Every day with you is a reminder of how lucky I am to have found someone who completes me in ways I never knew were possible. Rayla, you are my heart, my joy, and my forever. I love you more than words can ever truly express, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life showing you just how much you mean to me.”
Rayla’s eyes shimmered with emotion as she replied, her voice soft but resolute. “Callum, you’ve changed my life in ways I never could have imagined. From the moment you stumbled into my world, you’ve brought light and warmth where there was once only darkness. You’ve shown me kindness and love that I never thought I deserved, and you’ve given me a place where I truly belong.
You’ve seen me at my best and at my worst, and yet you’ve always stood by me, never faltering, never letting go. Your heart is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever known, full of compassion, understanding, and a strength that inspires me every day. You see the good in everyone, and you’ve taught me to see it in myself. You are my heart, my home, my everything. I love you, Callum, with all my heart, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life by your side, facing whatever comes our way—together.”
Kazi nodded, their eyes warm with approval, and turned to Callum and Rayla, their expression solemn yet joyful. “Please, exchange your rings.”
Callum took a deep breath, his hands trembling slightly as he slid the silver ring onto Rayla’s finger. “With this ring, I thee wed,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion.
Rayla’s eyes glistened with tears as she took the ring meant for Callum and gently placed it on his finger. “With this ring, I thee wed,” she echoed, her voice steady despite the emotions swirling inside her.
Kazi then looked at Callum, their gaze encouraging. “Callum, do you take Rayla to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love and cherish, till death do you part?”
Callum met Rayla’s eyes, his voice strong and unwavering. “I do.”
Kazi turned to Rayla. “Rayla, do you take Callum to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love and cherish, till death do you part?”
Rayla’s smile was radiant as she responded, “I do.”
Kazi’s smile widened as they declared, “By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss.”
The moment the words left Kazi’s lips, Rayla threw her arms around Callum’s neck. He leaned in, capturing her lips with his own, his hands moving to her waist to pull her closer. They grinned against each other’s lips, the joy and relief palpable. The camp erupted in cheers, Ezran’s voice ringing out the loudest, closely followed by Soren’s boisterous applause.
As they pulled away, Rayla laughed, her joy infectious. “Looks like we’re really in this now.”
Callum grinned, pulling her even closer. “Always.”
With that, he pulled her in for another kiss, their connection deepened in the embrace.
Rayla’s parents observed the scene with a mix of emotions. Runaan’s usual stoicism cracked just a little, a faint glimmer of begrudging acceptance in his eyes as he witnessed the depth of the bond between his daughter and her human.
Lain and Tiadrin, having been more skeptical from the beginning, exchanged a look that spoke volumes. Their expressions softened as they observed the love between Callum and Rayla, the uncertainty and worry that had clouded their judgment slowly giving way to a reluctant approval. They had seen their daughter through so much, and witnessing her happiness now was hard to deny.
Ethari, on the other hand, wore a bright, proud smile, his eyes shining with love and pride. The ceremony had been far from traditional, but seeing Rayla so happy, and knowing how much Callum meant to her, filled him with contentment. He had always known that Callum was a good match for Rayla, and seeing them commit to each other in such a heartfelt way affirmed his feelings.
The night might have been filled with uncertainties, but in that moment, surrounded by those they loved, Callum and Rayla knew they had found their forever.
—
After the ceremony, Callum and Rayla retreated to their tent, their hearts still soaring from the vows they had exchanged. The night was quiet, the world outside their little sanctuary holding its breath as they settled into their new reality.
The inside of their tent was dimly lit by a few flickering lanterns. The bed was covered with soft blankets, a small luxury they had managed to set up despite the ongoing war. And at last, they finally took a moment to be alone.
Rayla’s eyes sparkled with a mix of exhaustion and joy as she unfastened the clasps of her overcoat. Callum watched her with a loving gaze, his own fingers undoing the laces of his tunic. The transition from the excitement of the ceremony to this intimate moment was both soothing and thrilling.
“Can you believe it?” Rayla said with a lovestruck giggle as she slipped under the covers, her smile radiant. “We’re actually married. ”
Callum slipped into bed beside her, his eyes bright with happiness. He pulled her close, his arms encircling her as if he never wanted to let go. “I can’t,” he said, his voice filled with wonder. “I never thought I’d get to call you my wife. It feels like a dream.”
Rayla nestled against him, her head resting comfortably on his shoulder. “It’s the best dream,” she whispered, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his chest, “my husband, ”
Callum chuckled softly, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “It really is. I’m so glad we did this. Even if it’s not what we imagined, it’s perfect. ”
They lay together in silence for a few moments, savoring the peacefulness of their shared space. The weight of the day’s events had melted away, leaving only the warmth of their embrace and the shared joy of their new life together.
Rayla turned her head slightly to meet his gaze, her eyes filled with love and mischief. “I think I like this,” she said, her tone playful. “You and me, together.”
Callum grinned, his heart swelling with affection. “So do I. Forever and always.”
As they settled into the comforting rhythm of each other’s presence, the reality of their union felt both exhilarating and comforting. Their wedding had been unconventional, but it was theirs, and in the quiet of their bed, they both felt an undeniable sense of belonging.
In their own little world, wrapped in each other’s arms, Callum and Rayla embraced the simplicity of their love, finding contentment in the gentle and genuine moments that made their bond so special.
