Summary:

Bobby and Athena share some looks. The team notices.

Work Text:

The fire station was buzzing with the usual energy as the crew of the 118 gathered for dinner. It was one of those rare evenings when things were calm, and the team could sit together, sharing a meal and unwinding after a long day. Athena Grant had stopped by to catch up with Hen, something they tried to do whenever their schedules aligned.

As Athena and Hen sat at one of the tables, chatting about their days, Athena's gaze drifted downstairs where Captain Bobby Nash was talking to Buck and Eddie. There was something about the way he carried himself, the quiet strength that radiated from him, that Athena found herself admiring more often than she cared to admit.

Hen noticed the direction of Athena's gaze and smirked. "You're staring."

Athena blinked, quickly turning her attention back to Hen. "What?"

"You were looking at him," Hen said, her tone teasing but her eyes soft with understanding. "And not just now. I've noticed it before. The way you look at him when you think no one’s watching."

Athena opened her mouth to protest, but Hen raised a hand, cutting her off. "Look, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. In fact, I think it's... nice. You two have been through a lot, and maybe—just maybe—there's something there worth exploring."

Athena sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Hen, I don't know... It’s complicated."

"Life’s always complicated," Hen replied with a shrug. "But that doesn’t mean you should close yourself off to something that could be good for you."

Before Athena could respond, the station's alarm bell suddenly rang, echoing through the room and cutting their conversation short. Hen immediately stood up, her expression shifting from friendly to professional in an instant.

"Looks like duty calls," she said with a quick smile. "We’ll continue this conversation later."

As the team rushed downstairs, Athena’s phone buzzed with a new text. It was from dispatch, calling her to a scene across town. She glanced back at Hen, who was already halfway to the engine, then down at her phone.

"Be safe out there," Hen called over her shoulder as she jogged to join her team.

"You too," Athena replied, already moving towards the exit, her mind still swirling with Hen's words as she prepared to face whatever awaited her at the scene.

————————————————————

The scene was a controlled frenzy, as most emergency calls involving accidents were. A delivery truck had lost control and crashed into a small neighborhood playground, sending panic through the nearby residents. Thankfully, the playground was nearly empty at the time, but a couple of kids had been injured, and several people were trapped in the wreckage.

Athena arrived just as the 118 team was already working to stabilize the situation. She quickly assessed the area, noting how efficiently the firefighters were moving, coordinating with precision under Bobby’s calm leadership.

Athena’s heart gave an involuntary flutter when she saw Bobby, his brow furrowed in concentration as he directed Buck and Eddie on how to safely extract a trapped woman from underneath a collapsed piece of playground equipment. There was something undeniably magnetic about the way he took charge, his presence a steadying force amid the chaos.

She approached him just as he was taking a moment to catch his breath, his eyes scanning the scene to ensure everything was under control.

"Bobby," she greeted him, her voice firm but carrying a warmth that wasn’t lost on him.

"Athena," he replied, turning to face her, a small smile playing on his lips despite the seriousness of the situation. "Glad you're here."

"Likewise," she said, her gaze lingering on him for a moment longer than necessary. "What's the status?"

As they spoke, Buck and Eddie, busy with their tasks, exchanged a quick glance, each picking up on the subtle exchange between Bobby and Athena.

“Hey, Eddie,” Buck muttered under his breath, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth as he tilted his head towards the pair. “You seeing what I’m seeing?”

Eddie, who was carefully guiding a rescue line under the truck, glanced over briefly. “Yeah,” he replied with a knowing grin. “Definitely some sparks flying over there.”

“They’re trying to be all professional,” Buck added, “but man, it’s like watching a romcom in real life.”

Meanwhile, Bobby and Athena continued their conversation, standing a bit closer than strictly necessary, their voices just low enough to give their interaction an air of intimacy, despite the chaos around them.

After a while, Hen called out, signaling that the last of the trapped victims were being freed and would need immediate medical attention. The moment between them passed, but the connection remained, lingering in the air.

The vehicles were lined up in and outside the 118. Athena still there to finish up some paperwork. Hen, stepping out of the ambulance with Chimney, spotted Athena walking towards her car.

"Hey, Athena!" Hen called, jogging over with a grin that Athena immediately recognized as trouble.

Athena turned, arching an eyebrow. "What’s that look for?"

Hen gave her a knowing smile. "You know exactly what it’s for. I saw you and Bobby back there."

Athena tried to play it off, shaking her head with a chuckle. "Hen, it was just—"

"Oh, girl," Hen interrupted, her tone teasing but affectionate, "you got it bad. You both do. It’s so obvious, I’m surprised the kids haven’t started teasing you yet."

Athena felt her cheeks warm slightly, a rare moment of vulnerability that Hen didn’t miss.

"And with the kids you mean… Buck and Eddie? It’s not like that," Athena tried, though her voice lacked conviction. "We’re just... we understand each other. That’s all."

Hen laughed softly, shaking her head. "Keep telling yourself that. But from where I’m standing, it’s only a matter of time before one of you makes a move."

Athena sighed, but there was a hint of a smile on her lips. "We’ll see."

Hen gave her a quick hug. "Yeah, we will. And when it happens, just remember, I called it first."

With that, Hen jogged back to join the team, leaving Athena to mull over her words as she headed to her car. She couldn’t deny that Hen was right. There was something there between her and Bobby, something that had been simmering for a while. Maybe it was time to stop ignoring it and see where it could lead.

————————————————————

Bobby Nash prided himself on his ability to stay focused, even when the station was abuzz with energy. The firehouse was his second home, a place where he found purpose and the strength to carry on after everything he’d lost. But lately, there was something—or rather, someone—that had been distracting him more than usual.

As he was in the fire station, pretending to focus on the truck in front of him, Bobby’s thoughts kept drifting to Athena. He'd seen her more often lately, whether it was on the scene of an emergency or just stopping by to catch up with Hen. Each time she walked into the station, his heart seemed to skip a beat.

It wasn’t just her commanding presence or the way she handled herself under pressure—though that was impressive. It was the warmth in her eyes when she looked at him, the unspoken connection that had been growing between them over the past few months.

Just as he was trying to refocus on his work, Eddie made his way to him.

"Hey, Cap," Eddie greeted, leaning against the door of the truck. "You look deep in thought. Something on your mind?"

Bobby looked up, giving Eddie a small, sheepish smile. "Just going over some stuff. You know how it is."

Eddie raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying it. "Yeah, sure. But it seems like you’ve been cleaning the same spot for the last ten minutes. What’s really going on?"

Bobby sighed, running a hand through his hair. He knew he couldn’t hide much from his team; they were like family. "Alright, maybe my mind’s a little elsewhere."

"Anywhere specific?" Eddie asked, a knowing grin starting to form. "Like, maybe Athena?"

Bobby chuckled, though there was a hint of nervousness in it. "Is it that obvious?"

"Well, she’s been around a lot lately," Eddie pointed out. "And you always seem a little more... I don’t know, energized when she’s here. It’s like you’re trying to be cool about it, but we can tell."

Bobby shook his head, though he couldn’t help the small smile tugging at his lips. "Athena’s a good friend. We’ve been through a lot together. That’s all."

Eddie nodded but didn’t drop the subject. "Yeah, I get that. But sometimes things that start as friendship can turn into something more. And if you ask me, there’s something there."

Before Bobby could respond, the sound of footsteps caught both their attention. Athena was making her way up, probably to see Hen. Bobby’s heart did that familiar little flip as she entered the room, her presence commanding yet comforting.

"Speak of the devil," Eddie murmured with a grin, giving Bobby a pat on the shoulder as he turned to leave. "I’ll leave you to it, Cap."

---

Bobby had seen all kinds of emergencies in his career, but incidents involving children always hit him the hardest. The crash site was a mess, with a delivery truck having plowed through a neighborhood playground, causing panic and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

As Bobby coordinated the rescue efforts, his focus was laser-sharp. He directed Buck and Eddie on how to safely extract the trapped civilians, his mind working through every possible scenario to ensure the safety of his team and the victims. But even in the middle of all this, when Athena arrived, her presence grounded him in a way that nothing else could.

She approached him, her stride confident and purposeful, and Bobby found himself momentarily distracted by the way the sunlight played off her uniform. He quickly pushed the thought aside, reminding himself to stay focused on the task at hand.

"Bobby," she greeted him, her voice cutting through the chaos around them.

"Athena," he replied, turning to her with a small smile that he couldn’t quite suppress. Her being here made everything feel just a little bit more manageable. "Glad you're here."

They exchanged a few words about the situation, and though their conversation was professional, Bobby couldn’t help but notice the way her eyes lingered on him, or the slight warmth in her tone. There was something different between them, something that had been building quietly over time.

Just then, out of the corner of his eye, Bobby noticed Buck and Eddie glancing over at them, sharing a look that he knew all too well. They were definitely talking about him and Athena. Bobby inwardly sighed, but a part of him couldn’t blame them. The chemistry between him and Athena wasn’t exactly subtle, even if neither of them had fully acknowledged it yet.

After giving Athena a quick rundown of the situation, Bobby found himself smiling more than he probably should have, given the circumstances. He couldn’t help it—being around her had that effect on him.

---

The emergency over, Bobby was checking in with his team when he saw Hen talking to Athena. He couldn’t hear what they were saying, but the playful smile on Hen’s face and the way Athena laughed softly told him it was something good.

As he watched them, Bobby’s mind wandered back to what Eddie had said earlier. Maybe there was something more between him and Athena, something that went beyond friendship. The thought was both exhilarating and terrifying. He wasn’t sure if he was ready to open himself up to that possibility again, but with Athena... maybe it was worth the risk.

He saw Hen give Athena a hug, then catch his eye. She shot him a knowing look, the kind that said ‘You’re not fooling anyone’ Bobby just shook his head with a wry smile, knowing there was no use in denying what everyone else seemed to see so clearly.

As Athena turned to leave, their eyes met, and for a moment, everything else faded away. Bobby felt that familiar warmth in his chest, the one that told him he was heading down a path he hadn’t expected—but maybe one he was ready for.

——————————————————-

The firehouse was calm for once, with the team scattered throughout the building, enjoying the rare downtime. Bobby was tucked away in his office, leaving Hen, Eddie, Buck, and Chimney at the communal table, casually discussing everything from the latest call to weekend plans. But soon, the conversation took a familiar turn.

"So, about Cap and Athena," Buck began, glancing around to make sure Bobby wasn’t within earshot. "We’ve all noticed what’s going on there, right?"

Chimney nodded, leaning back in his chair. "It’s like watching two people walk around in circles, not realizing they’re heading straight for each other."

"Yeah," Eddie agreed, his tone thoughtful. "They’re both too cautious to make the first move. They need a little nudge."

Hen, always quick with a plan, leaned in. "Okay, so we agree they need a push. But how? We’ve got to be subtle, or they’ll see right through us."

"Well, what if we invite them both out for a drink?" Buck suggested. "It’s been a while since we all went out together, and we can make it seem like it’s just a casual team thing."

Eddie raised an eyebrow. "How are we gonna get Cap to come?"

Hen smirked. "We can sell it as a team bonding thing, something low-key after a tough week. Bobby’s all about keeping the team together, and if we all act like we’re in, he won’t say no."

"And Athena?" Chimney asked. "How do we get her there without making it obvious?"

"That’s the easy part," Hen said with a grin. "I’ll talk to her, make it sound like it’s been forever since we all got together, and that it’d be good for her to join us. She trusts me, so she’ll be more likely to go along with it."

Buck chuckled, the pieces falling into place. "And then, once we get them both there…"

"We all conveniently don’t show up," Eddie finished, smirking. "Let them spend some time alone. Just the two of them, sitting there, waiting for the rest of us."

Chimney laughed. "They’ll be stuck, waiting for us, and then when they realize they’ve been set up, it’ll be too late. They’ll have already had some time together to talk."

Hen nodded, pleased with the plan. "Exactly. And if we know Athena and Bobby, they won’t just leave. They’ll end up talking, maybe even realizing what’s been right in front of them this whole time."

Buck leaned forward, energized by the idea. "Alright, let’s do this. We’ll pick a place that’s quiet, somewhere they can actually talk without distractions. And then we just… don’t show up."

"Leave it to me," Hen said, already planning her approach. "I’ll set it up, and you guys just make sure to act like it’s a normal team hangout. No hinting at what we’re really doing."

They all exchanged conspiratorial grins, the excitement of the plan bringing them together. Bobby and Athena had been tiptoeing around their feelings for too long, and if the team could help them take that next step, it was worth the effort.

---

Bobby hesitated as he parked outside the quiet, cozy bar Hen had suggested. He rarely came to places like this but Hen had made it sound like the whole team was coming, and he didn’t want to let them down.

Athena arrived shortly after, parking her car next to his. She smiled as she got out, and Bobby felt that familiar warmth in his chest at the sight of her.

"Hey, Bobby," she greeted him. "Looks like we’re the first ones here."

"Yeah," he replied, matching her smile. "Hen said it was supposed to be a team thing. It’s been a while since we all hung out together like this."

They walked inside together, the dim lighting and soft music creating an intimate atmosphere. Bobby noticed the lack of people, which only made the situation feel more... personal. They found a table and sat down, glancing around for any sign of the others.

Fifteen minutes passed. Then twenty. The waitress brought them both non-alcoholic drinks, but still, no sign of the rest of the team.

Athena frowned slightly, checking her phone. "You don’t think they’re standing us up, do you?"

Bobby laughed, but it was more to cover his growing suspicion. "I’m sure they’re just running late."

Another ten minutes passed, and it became increasingly clear what had happened. Bobby leaned back in his chair, a mix of amusement and realization dawning on his face.

"You know," he said, looking at Athena with a knowing smile, "I think we’ve been set up."

Athena blinked, then slowly started to smile, shaking her head. "Those sneaky… I should’ve known."

"Yeah, they’re not exactly subtle," Bobby agreed, though he couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity. He looked across the table at Athena, the way the soft light played on her features, and for a moment, the world outside the bar didn’t exist.

Athena caught his gaze, her smile softening. "Well, we’re here now. Might as well make the most of it."

Bobby nodded, feeling a warmth that had nothing to do with the drink in his hand. "Yeah. I think that sounds like a good idea."

As they settled in, the realization that they were alone—truly alone—hung in the air between them, not heavy or uncomfortable, but full of possibilities.

———

“I guess we should’ve known better than to trust those guys. Hen probably masterminded this whole thing.”

“Definitely,” Athena agreed, her smile widening. “She’s always been good at playing matchmaker.”

They both laughed, the sound easing some of the tension. Bobby glanced at his drink, then back at Athena. “I’m surprised they got me to come, honestly. I haven’t been to a bar in years.”

Athena tilted her head slightly, curiosity in her eyes. “Really? Not even with the team?”

Bobby hesitated for a moment, then decided there was no reason to hold back. “It’s been a long road, and part of that was cutting out places where I might be tempted. But, you know, it’s different now. I’m different.”

Athena’s expression softened, and she nodded, understanding the weight of what he’d just shared. “I’m glad you’re in a better place, Bobby. I can’t imagine how hard that must have been.”

“It wasn’t easy,” Bobby admitted, his voice quiet. “But it was necessary. I needed to take control of my life again. I lost so much, and it took me a long time to even think about rebuilding. But… I’m getting there.”

Athena reached out, her hand resting gently on his. “You’ve done more than just get there. You’ve helped so many people, Bobby. You’ve been a rock for your team, for the community.”

Bobby looked down at their hands, the warmth of her touch grounding him. “Thank you, Athena. That means a lot coming from you.”

Athena withdrew her hand slowly, feeling the delicate balance between them. She knew Bobby had his own burdens, but she also carried hers. “You know,” she said, her voice a little softer, “I didn’t think I’d ever be able to move on after Michael. Not after everything we went through.”

Bobby listened intently, knowing this wasn’t something she spoke about lightly. “Michael… that must’ve been hard. Finding out after so many years…”

“It was,” Athena admitted, her gaze distant for a moment as she recalled the pain of that time. “But we’re in a good place now. He’s a great father to our kids, and we’re still a family, just… different.”

“May and Harry are lucky to have both of you,” Bobby said, sincerity in his voice. “And you’ve been so strong through it all. I can see that in the way you are with them, with Michael.”

Athena smiled wistfully. “I had to be strong for them. They needed stability, and I wasn’t about to let them see me fall apart. But… it wasn’t easy, Bobby. I spent a long time feeling like I’d failed somehow, even though I knew it wasn’t my fault.”

Bobby nodded, understanding all too well. “I know that feeling. I used to think that if I had been different, if I’d been better, maybe I wouldn’t have lost my family. But… sometimes things just happen. And we have to find a way to keep going.”

“Yeah,” Athena agreed, her voice barely above a whisper. “We do.”

A comfortable silence settled between them again, filled with shared understanding. They’d both lost so much, and yet here they were—alive, healing, and maybe even ready to let someone else in.

Finally, Athena broke the silence, her eyes meeting Bobby’s with a mixture of curiosity and something deeper. “So, why do you think they set us up like this? What makes them think we’re right for each other?”

Bobby felt his heart skip a beat at the question, the vulnerability in her voice mirroring his own. He hesitated, unsure of how to put his feelings into words. “I… I think they see something in us that maybe we haven’t wanted to see ourselves. They know us, and they care about us, and maybe… they just want us to be happy.”

Athena’s gaze softened as she considered his words, her own emotions stirring. “Do you… do you think we’re right for each other?”

The question hung in the air between them, charged with the weight of everything unsaid. Bobby felt a surge of fear—fear of getting hurt again, fear of letting someone in, only to lose them. But at the same time, there was something undeniable about the connection he felt with Athena, something that had been quietly growing between them.

He took a deep breath, gathering his courage. “Yes,” he finally said, his voice steady despite the emotions churning inside him. “I do.”

Athena looked at him, her heart racing. She had spent so long guarding herself, protecting her heart from further pain. But here was Bobby—kind, strong, and understanding in a way that few others could be. She knew that opening up to him could be the start of something beautiful, but also the start of something terrifying.

“I’m scared,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Me too,” Bobby confessed, his eyes never leaving hers. “But maybe… maybe that’s okay. Maybe being scared just means this is something worth taking a chance on.”

Athena smiled, a real, genuine smile that reached her eyes. “Maybe you’re right.”

They sat there, the tension between them easing into something more comforting, more real. The fears were still there, but so was the possibility of something new, something that could help them both heal and grow.

---

The next morning, the firehouse buzzed with the usual energy. Hen, Eddie, Buck, and Chimney were gathered around the kitchen table, exchanging knowing glances as they sipped their coffee. They’d been waiting for Bobby to emerge from his office, eager to hear how the night had gone. They heard footsteps on the stairs, and Bobby walked in, a noticeable spring in his step and an unmistakable smile on his face.

“Morning, Cap,” Eddie greeted, trying to sound casual as he poured himself another cup. “How was last night?”

Bobby gave him a look, a mix of amusement and caution. “It was... fine.”

“Just fine?” Hen pressed, leaning forward with a grin. “You sure? You’re smiling like someone who had more than just a fine time.”

Bobby shook his head, still smiling despite himself. “It was a good night, Hen. We had a nice conversation.”

Buck leaned back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest. “So, did you ask her out again? Maybe for a *real* date this time?”

Bobby hesitated, the smile still tugging at the corners of his lips. “We… talked about it.”

“Sounds like it went better than fine,” Buck quipped, raising his eyebrows suggestively. “You thinking this might be the start of something more? Like, you know, love?”

Bobby’s eyes widened, and he quickly shook his head, waving a hand in dismissal. “Whoa, whoa, whoa—nobody said anything about love. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, buddy.”

The team laughed, but the warmth in Bobby’s voice didn’t go unnoticed. They knew their captain well enough to see that something had shifted, even if he wasn’t ready to fully admit it yet.

Before they could press him further, the station alarm blared, cutting through the conversation with its urgent tone. The smiles and teasing were replaced by the focused determination they all knew too well. A serious call was coming in.

“Let’s move!” Bobby ordered, his voice firm as he led the way to the trucks.

---

The call was as bad as they’d expected. A multi-car pileup on the freeway had left several people trapped in their vehicles, and the situation was chaotic. As Bobby and the team arrived, Athena was already on-site, directing traffic and assessing the scene.

Bobby’s heart tightened when he saw her in the thick of it, her commanding presence guiding her officers and offering calm to those injured. They exchanged a quick glance across the chaos, both professional but with an undercurrent of something more.

The scene was tense. The fire crew worked quickly to extract victims while Athena and her officers managed the growing crowd. It was a delicate balance, with lives hanging in the balance. Just as they gained control over the situation, a tanker truck involved in the crash began leaking fuel, sending everyone scrambling to avoid a potential explosion.

“Everybody, move back!” Bobby yelled, waving his team to retreat to a safer distance.

Athena was on the other side of the wreckage. Bobby’s heart pounded as he saw her too close to the tanker. “Athena, get away from there!” he shouted, his voice filled with urgency.

She looked up, eyes meeting his, just as the tanker ignited. A deafening explosion rocked the scene, sending a shockwave through the air. Bobby ducked behind a fire engine, his heart in his throat, desperately scanning the area for any sign of Athena.

As the dust settled and the flames were quickly subdued by his team, Bobby spotted Athena emerging from behind a police car. Relief surged through him, and without thinking, he sprinted toward her.

She saw him coming, and as soon as they were close enough, they wrapped their arms around each other in a tight embrace, the world around them fading away. Bobby planting a kiss on her forehead.

“Never do that again,” Bobby whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Athena pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, her own filled with a mix of fear, relief, and something deeper. “I don’t need that second date, Bobby,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “I don’t want to wait. Our jobs… they show us every day how fast life can change, how it can be over in an instant. I don’t want to waste any more time.”

She started to ramble, the words spilling out in a rush as she tried to explain everything she was feeling. “I’m scared, but I know what I want. I want this. I want us. And if that means jumping in before we’re ready, then—”

Bobby, unable to take it anymore, cupped her face in his hands and kissed her, silencing her with the one thing he’d been wanting to do since the night before. The kiss was filled with all the things they hadn’t been able to say—fear, relief, hope, and a tentative promise of what could be.

When they finally pulled back, both of them breathless, Bobby rested his forehead against hers. “I’m scared too, Athena,” he admitted, his voice soft. “But you’re right. We don’t have to wait. Let’s not waste any more time.”

Athena smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek as she nodded. “No more waiting.”

They held each other for a moment longer, the chaos of the scene continuing around them, but in that moment, they had everything they needed—each other.

——-

The firehouse was buzzing with the familiar energy of a well-deserved break. Bobby, Hen, Buck, Eddie, and Chimney were lounging in the common area, decompressing from the intense call earlier in the day.

Buck was mid-story, animatedly recounting the latest mishap involving a rogue raccoon and a tree branch. “And then the raccoon just scurried off like it was nothing, leaving the poor guy tangled in the branches!”

The team laughed, the tension from the day melting away. Hen glanced at Bobby with a mischievous grin. “So, Cap, how’s it going with Athena? I hear you had a bit of a moment out there yesterday.”

Bobby, who had been comfortably seated on the couch, tried to maintain a nonchalant expression. “It was just a moment, nothing more.”

“Nothing more?” Eddie teased, raising an eyebrow. “You looked pretty into it to me”

Bobby glanced towards the stairs, as if hoping Athena would appear and provide a change of subject. “Well, we’re not making a big deal out of it. It was just... nice.”

Buck grinned. “Nice, huh? That’s one way to put it. I’d say it looked like a new beginning.”

Before Bobby could respond, Athena walked in, her presence immediately brightening the room. She headed straight for the couch, sitting down next to Bobby with a casual ease.

“Hey, everyone,” Athena greeted, noticing the amused looks on the team’s faces. “What’s going on?”

Hen’s eyes lit up as she saw Athena join them. “Just talking about how Cap and you had a bit of a kissing scene.”

Athena looked over at Bobby, catching the soft smile he wore as he looked at her. “Oh? What did I miss?”

Bobby tried to play it cool but couldn’t stop the smile that spread across his face. “Just a lot of teasing. Nothing too serious.”

“Yeah, sure,” Chimney said with a knowing grin. “You two seemed pretty wrapped up in each other. It’s good to see.”

Athena met Bobby’s gaze, her expression warm and content.

The bell rang suddenly, signaling the next emergency. The team quickly jumped into action, readying themselves for the call. Bobby stood up, using Athena’s leg for leverage. She smiled up at him as she stood too, their brief, intimate moment standing in stark contrast to the chaos he was about to face again.

“Hey, Cap,” Athena said softly.

“Yeah?” Bobby replied, looking down at her.

She leaned in and gave him a gentle peck on the lips. “Be safe out there.”

Bobby’s eyes sparkled with affection as he returned her smile. “I will. You too.”

Bobby and Athena shared a final, meaningful glance before he joined his colleagues. The last couple of days had been full of unexpected turns, but as they faced the new challenge together, they both knew they had something special to look forward to.
