“Mr. Rodriguez, you can go home now.” My boss said, sipping on his coffee despite it being 11 P.M. I was the only one left in the office, feeling too bad to say no to doing extra hours and finishing all of the work that my coworkers didn’t. I really should find a new job, but I didn’t have it in me to start that search now.
I straightened the papers on my desk, pushing them to the corner as I grabbed my bag and stood up. I wondered if I would even get paid overtime for this. Probably not.
I started walking home, too broke to afford a car. I lived just down the street anyway, not too big of a deal to walk it everyday. New York City seemed to always be alive, just as many people on the streets at night as there were during the day.
Little did I know, this would be my last night in NYC.
