Work Text:
Sheldon paced back and forth in the living room, his mind racing and his heart pounding with a mix of shock, anger, and disbelief. This was not how he had envisioned his evening going. He had come home expecting a typical, quiet night—perhaps some reading, maybe a little chess with Marie. Instead, he was hit with news that shook him to his core.
Amy sat calmly on the couch, watching her husband with a mix of sympathy and concern. She knew this was a difficult moment for him, but she also knew it was inevitable. Marie was growing up, and as much as Sheldon might wish otherwise, there were some things he couldn’t control.
Finally, Sheldon stopped pacing and turned to face Amy, his eyes wide with a combination of disbelief and frustration. “Amy,” he said, his voice trembling slightly, “do you realize what’s happened? Our daughter—our sixteen-year-old daughter—has lost her virginity.”
Amy nodded, her expression calm and understanding. “I know, Sheldon. Marie told me about it a few days ago.”
Sheldon’s eyes widened even further. “You knew? And you didn’t tell me? How could you keep something like this from me?”
Amy sighed, knowing this was going to be a tough conversation. “Sheldon, I didn’t tell you right away because I wanted to give Marie the space to talk to you about it herself. She’s already going through a lot of emotions, and I didn’t want to overwhelm her.”
Sheldon threw his hands up in exasperation. “Overwhelm her? What about overwhelming me? Amy, we didn’t lose our virginities until we were thirty-six! She is twenty years too early!”
Amy couldn’t help but smile softly at his reaction, though she knew better than to let it show too much. “Or, Sheldon, maybe we were twenty years too late.”
Sheldon’s face contorted in a mixture of confusion and indignation. “Too late? What on earth are you talking about?”
Amy leaned forward, her voice gentle but firm. “Sheldon, everyone’s timeline is different. You and I had our own reasons for waiting as long as we did, and that was right for us. But Marie is a different person. She’s growing up, and part of growing up is exploring her own relationships and making her own choices.”
Sheldon shook his head vehemently. “No, no, this isn’t right. She’s just a child! She’s not ready for this kind of responsibility. I need to put a stop to it before things get out of hand.”
He clenched his fists in frustration and made a purposeful motion to storm away, but then stopped abruptly, his eyes widening as a sudden thought struck him. “I’m going to murder him.”
Amy raised her eyebrows. “Who?”
“Alex. Just when I thought he was someone I could tolerate.”
Amy sighed, her tone firm but amused. “Sheldon, you can’t commit a crime over something like this.”
Sheldon rolled his eyes. “I wasn’t going to actually do it, Amy. I meant figuratively. You know how I hate ‘literally.’”
Amy reached out and gently took his hand, pulling him down to sit beside her on the couch. “Sheldon, listen to me. Marie is not a little girl anymore. She’s a young woman, and she’s going to make her own decisions, whether we like it or not. Our job as her parents is to guide her, to make sure she knows she’s loved and supported, and to trust that we’ve raised her to make good choices.”
Sheldon stared at her, his mind racing as he tried to process her words. “But what if she makes a mistake? What if this boy… what if he hurts her?”
Amy squeezed his hand reassuringly. “Sheldon, that’s a fear all parents have. But we can’t protect her from everything. What we can do is make sure she knows she can come to us if she ever needs help. We’ve given her a strong foundation, and she knows we’re here for her.”
“How could she be so… so reckless?,” Sheldon muttered, pulling his hand away. Sheldon’s shoulders slumped, the weight of the situation pressing down on him.
“She’s not being reckless,” Amy countered gently. “She’s being a teenager. And as much as we might want to keep her our little girl forever, we can’t. She’s growing up, Sheldon. She’s in love.”
“In love?” Sheldon turned his head sharply, the words hitting him like a freight train. “How could she even know what that is?”
“Do you remember when we first started dating?” Amy asked softly, scooting closer to him. “How scared you were of the idea of love? And how it took time for you to understand what it meant?”
Sheldon nodded, his mind drifting back to those early, awkward days of their relationship. He had been terrified of the vulnerability that love demanded, of the way it threatened to disrupt the carefully constructed walls he had built around himself. But with Amy, he had learned to embrace it, to let it in despite his fears.
He was silent for a long moment, his eyes unfocused as he processed her words. “I just… I don’t want her to get hurt,” he said finally, his voice cracking slightly. “I just… I don’t want to lose her, Amy. I don’t want to lose my little girl.”
Amy’s heart ached for him. She could see how much this was tearing him apart, and she knew how deeply he cared for Marie. “Sheldon,” she said softly, “you’re not going to lose her. No matter what happens, you will always be her father. You will always be the most important man in her life.”
Sheldon looked at her, his eyes filled with uncertainty. “But what if she doesn’t need me anymore? What if she starts to pull away? You know how much I like to feel important.”
Amy shook her head, her voice firm but loving. “She’s always going to need you, Sheldon. But as she gets older, the way she needs you is going to change. It’s not about losing her—it’s about letting her grow and become her own person. And that’s something we have to accept, even if it’s hard.”
Sheldon sighed, his mind still struggling to come to terms with everything. “I don’t know if I can do that, Amy. I don’t know if I can just… let go.”
Amy reached up and cupped his cheek, her eyes filled with understanding. “You don’t have to let go, Sheldon. You just have to trust her. Trust that she’s going to be okay. And trust that she’s going to come to you when she needs you.”
Sheldon leaned into her touch, his eyes closing as he tried to calm the storm of emotions inside him. “I want to trust her, Amy. I really do. But it’s just so hard.”
Amy smiled gently, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. “I know it is. But we’ll get through this together, just like we always do.”
Sheldon opened his eyes, looking at her with a mixture of love and uncertainty. “You really think she’s going to be okay?”
Amy nodded, her voice filled with conviction. “I do, Sheldon. She’s smart, she’s responsible, and she’s got two parents who love her more than anything. She’s going to be just fine.”
Sheldon took a deep breath, letting her words sink in. Slowly, he began to feel some of the tension leave his body. He wasn’t entirely convinced, but he trusted Amy more than anyone else in the world. If she believed that Marie would be okay, then maybe—just maybe—he could start to believe it too.
“Okay,” he said quietly, his voice filled with a mix of resignation and hope. “I’ll try to trust her. But I’m still not happy about this.”
Amy chuckled softly, brushing a stray hair out of his face. “That’s okay, Sheldon. You don’t have to be happy about it. Just be there for her, and she’ll know how much you care.”
Sheldon nodded, leaning in to rest his head on her shoulder. “Thank you, Amy. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Amy wrapped her arms around him, holding him close. “You don’t have to find out. We’re in this together, Sheldon. Always.”
"I'm still going to have a go at Alex. He's not getting off that easily." He huffed.
Amy pursed her lips, suppressing a laugh, and patting her hand gently over her husband, "Sure, sure honey. Let it rip."
They sat there in silence for a while, just holding each other, both of them taking comfort in the knowledge that no matter what challenges came their way, they would face them as a team. And as they sat there, despite his worries, anxiety and bubbling desire for revenge on Alex, Sheldon felt a small glimmer of hope start to grow inside him. Maybe, just maybe, everything would be okay.
The End
