Work Text:

The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm, golden light over the courtyard of the Butterfly Mansion. The air was thick with the scent of blooming flowers, and the gentle hum of cicadas filled the air, creating a soothing melody that seemed to ease the fatigue of the day.

Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, sat quietly on the wooden steps of the mansion, his mind as hazy as the mist he so often summoned in battle. Training had been intense today, and although he rarely let it show, even he felt the weight of exhaustion in his limbs. His blank expression didn’t betray the thoughts swirling in his head, but for once, they weren’t centered on battle or duty. Instead, his mind wandered to the boy who had been at his side all day.

Tanjiro Kamado, the ever-determined and kind-hearted Demon Slayer, had spent the day training with Muichiro, their breaths synchronized as they moved through their forms. Tanjiro’s spirit was unyielding, like the bright sun he so closely resembled, always burning with warmth and hope. It was a stark contrast to Muichiro’s cool, distant demeanor, but perhaps that was why they complemented each other so well.

As if sensing the Mist Hashira’s thoughts, Tanjiro appeared at the doorway, carrying a tray with two cups of steaming tea. His smile was as bright as ever, despite the clear exhaustion on his face.

“Muichiro-san, I brought us some tea. I thought it might help us relax after today’s training,” Tanjiro said, his voice gentle and full of sincerity.

Muichiro glanced up, his expression softening ever so slightly as he nodded. “Thank you, Tanjiro.”

Tanjiro sat down beside Muichiro, setting the tray between them. The two boys sat in comfortable silence for a moment, sipping their tea and watching the sky slowly darken. The sun dipped lower, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, and the first stars began to twinkle above.

“Today was tough,” Tanjiro said after a while, his voice thoughtful. “But I’m glad we trained together. I feel like I learned a lot from you, Muichiro-san.”

Muichiro blinked, a bit surprised by the compliment. “You’re very skilled, Tanjiro. Your strength and determination… they’re admirable.”

Tanjiro’s cheeks flushed slightly at the praise. “Thank you. It means a lot coming from you.”

Another stretch of silence followed, but this time it was filled with a sense of understanding between them. Despite their differences, they had formed a bond during their training, one that was deeper than either of them had expected.

After a moment, Tanjiro turned to Muichiro, his eyes filled with that same warmth that seemed to radiate from him endlessly. “Muichiro-san, I know it’s not always easy to remember things, but… I want you to know that I’m here for you, whenever you need someone to talk to. We’re friends, right?”

Muichiro felt something stir in his chest at Tanjiro’s words, a feeling he wasn’t entirely familiar with. It was… comforting, in a way he hadn’t felt in a long time. He looked into Tanjiro’s eyes, seeing the sincerity and kindness there, and for a brief moment, the mist in his mind seemed to clear just a little.

“Friends…” Muichiro repeated, the word feeling strange yet right on his tongue. He allowed a small, genuine smile to touch his lips, something rare and precious. “Yes, we’re friends.”

Tanjiro beamed at him, and the warmth of his smile felt like the first rays of the morning sun breaking through the mist. It was a warmth that Muichiro realized he had been missing for far too long.

As they sat together, watching the stars slowly fill the night sky, the two boys felt a connection growing between them, one born from shared experiences, mutual respect, and an unspoken understanding that went beyond words.

In that quiet moment, under the blanket of the night sky, Muichiro and Tanjiro found something they didn’t know they were looking for—a bond that was as gentle as the mist and as enduring as the sun.

And perhaps, just perhaps, they would help each other shine a little brighter
