Work Text:
Rose stood at the safe, the cool brass at her back, her reflection caught in the darkened mirror. Jack was behind her—close enough that she could feel the quiet gravity of him, though he did not touch her. He was only watching.
She turned the pen between her fingers, distracted, unaware of the way ink smeared across her skin, faint blue stains blooming against the pale of her hand. Firelight moved across the room, catching in Jack’s hair, softening him, turning the sharp lines of him into something warmer, something almost unreal. She studied his reflection, searching.
There was nothing else there.
No performance. No expectation.
Just him.
The fall of his hair against his forehead. The long sweep of his lashes, lowered and shadowing his cheeks. The clean line of his jaw, the vulnerable rise and fall at his throat as he swallowed—slowly, deliberately, as though steadying himself. It was the same expression she had seen before, the night she had stood bare before him, heart hammering, when he had looked at her not with hunger, but with reverence.
He was affected by her. Deeply. And he made no attempt to hide it.
Rose felt it like heat beneath her skin.
They did not speak. She told herself to look away, to break the spell, but his eyes held her fast—blue, darkened now, ringed with shadow, full of things he did not say. There was intensity there, yes—but also restraint, something held carefully in check. It did not frighten her. She trusted it. Trusted him.
He saw her. Not the idea of her. Her.
The fire crackled softly, and warmth gathered low in her belly, spread outward, slow and heavy. Her heartbeat pressed against her ribs, loud in the silence.
Still, they did not move.
Moments earlier she had written the letter—folded it neatly, deliberately.
Cal,
Now you can keep us both locked in your safe.
Rose.
She had placed it beside Jack’s drawing, beside the necklace that had once felt like a sentence rather than a gift. The diamond that had bound her. And yet here she was—free. Because of him.
Her lips parted without her meaning them to. Jack’s gaze dropped, just briefly, as though drawn there by instinct rather than intent. She wet her lower lip, a small, unconscious movement.
His breath caught.
The sound was barely there—something torn loose and quickly stilled—but in the quiet room it rang between them, intimate as a confession. The air felt charged, as though the space itself were listening.
“I can see you,” he said quietly. “The way you’re looking at me.”
Her throat tightened. When she answered, her voice was soft, unsteady, unfamiliar even to her own ears.
“How,” she asked, almost a whisper,
“how am I looking at you?”
His heated gaze swept over her, lingering openly now—on the gentle swell of her breasts beneath the silk, the curve of her hips, the vulnerable line of her throat—as though the thin fabric of her kimono were nothing at all, as though he could already see beneath it. The look was not careless. It was reverent. Hungry. Unapologetically male.
Something in the air fractured.
Jack moved before he could stop himself, a single step, slow but decisive. Rose half-turned toward him instinctively, her body answering before her mind had time to intervene. She was so close now he could feel the warmth of her breath drift over his collarbone, could breathe in the clean scent of soap and linen—and beneath it, her. Sweet and unmistakable.
She jerked her gaze away from his open shirt, as though caught, but it was far too late. He had seen everything—the colour rising in her cheeks, the soft hitch of her breath, the pulse fluttering at her throat. Her eyes traced his skin like a touch, slow and exploratory, and God forgive him, but he wanted it. Wanted her to look at him. To see him.
Wanted her to want him.
“I… I thought I should return the necklace to the safe,” she said, lifting her hand, the pen still held between her ink-stained fingers. “I never want to see it again.”
Her voice wavered only slightly.
Jack stepped closer. Close enough now that her fingertips brushed his bare skin as she shifted—soft, fleeting contact that struck him like heat. He reached for the pen, intending nothing more than to take it from her, but it slipped free and fell to the carpet unnoticed. The ink blot it left behind—dark, spreading, indelible—went unseen by either of them.
“I hadn’t noticed…” she murmured, colour deepening as she backed toward the door, not in fear, but necessity. Perspective. Space. “I—I didn’t notice your shirt was so undone before, I—”
Her eyes betrayed her again. She had noticed everything: the loosened braces low on his hips, his sleeves rolled back, the open collar, the newly undone buttons. She turned away sharply.
Jack moved fast.
He caught her wrist gently but firmly, his thumb warm against her pulse. “I’m sorry if I offended you. I came to see—”
She trembled. Not away from him. Toward him.
She turned back, chin lifted, green eyes burning with something brave and dangerous. “For you,” she said. “I came for you.”
That was all it took.
Everything Jack had carried—the grief, the solitude, the aching want for something that mattered—broke loose in a single, overwhelming surge. He drew her against him without thinking, breath catching as her curls brushed his skin, as the soft weight of her settled against his body. She fit. Too perfectly.
Her hands came to rest on his chest.
The warmth of her palms spread through him like fire, seeping into muscle and bone, touching places he hadn’t known were still alive. He went utterly still, eyes closing as he absorbed it—the slow exploration of her hands over his chest, his shoulders, the side of his neck, his face.
A sound escaped him, low and helpless.
“Jack,” she said softly.
“Look at me.”
Jack’s stomach jumped at that sweet voice he’d come to crave—soft, edged now with something husky and unguarded. He opened his eyes to find she had risen onto her toes, her small hands urging his face downward, closer, closer still. Her gaze lingered on his lips with an intimacy that made his breath stutter.
He barely had time to draw air before her mouth found his.
The kiss was tentative, uncertain, as though she were discovering him in the moment—learning him. The gentle, damp drag of her lips against his sent a sharp ache through his lower belly, and the world narrowed instantly to the warmth of her mouth and the quiet, devastating truth that he wanted more. He wrapped his arms around her waist and lifted her without thinking, drawing her against him so he could deepen the kiss, so he could feel her fully.
A broken groan tore from his throat.
Her hips fit perfectly beneath his hands—too perfectly. The soft line of her thighs pressed against his, her body yielding and responsive in a way that stripped him bare. God, it was maddening. Did she know? Did she feel how hard he was for her, how utterly undone?
“Rose, wait.”
But Rose didn’t wait.
She pressed a kiss behind his ear, slow and deliberate, then trailed her mouth lower, teeth grazing his neck just enough to make him shudder. She paused at the vulnerable hollow of his throat, pressing a kiss there—oddly chaste, devastatingly intimate—before returning to his mouth.
Jack’s hands slid into her hair, fingers tightening as he stilled her, as though if he didn’t anchor himself to her he might be lost entirely. He kissed her then—deep and wild, the restraint gone. She gasped as he drew her lower lip into his mouth, sucking gently, and her nails dragged over his sensitive skin as her hands curled against his chest.
“Shhh,” he murmured, breathless. “Let me…”
He traced her mouth once more with his tongue before slipping it between her lips. Rose gasped, instinctively rising into him, and he answered with a low sound of need, his hands sliding from her waist to the firm curve of her bottom, pulling her closer. Nothing—nothing—had ever felt like this. Not the hollow attempts at intimacy Cal had demanded. This was fire. This was recognition.
Jack didn’t realise he had lifted her until her gasp broke the haze.
He pulled back, dazed, suddenly aware of the way his hips were moving against hers, the undeniable press of his erection against her soft belly.
“Rose, wait.” The words tore from him as he set her gently away, his hands lingering at her shoulders as though letting go might undo him. “We can’t… I shouldn’t…”
She looked up at him, eyes dark and searching, and placed her hand over his heart. He felt it—felt the wild, uneven rhythm beneath her palm.
“Aren’t you tired of being cold, Jack?” she whispered. Then, softer still, she tapped his chest. “Aren’t you tired of being cold here?”
His breath left him.
How did she know?
He had been cold for so long—years of drifting, of loving no one deeply enough to lose himself. He was exhausted by it. Terrified by what she awakened in him. Because if he let her any closer—if he allowed even a fraction more of this—he would not be able to hold himself back.
No one had touched him since his parents’ death—not his body, and not his heart. All that time, his heart had frozen inside his chest like icy white roses. Months folded into years, and then into five, and through all of it he had never once been warm. Before that, he’d been a young buck with a few young girls, had enjoyed their company, enjoyed their bodies, had done what he thought sex was meant to be.
It had been empty.
Now he felt entirely whole, and he hadn’t even made love to her.
He had never believed it could be this way between them.
Rose thought of the sweet warmth of his breath against her mouth, his large, gentle hand resting over her wildly beating heart. She never once considered refusing him. Instead, she tilted her head back and offered her mouth to him—open, trusting, giving. She was providing everything to him.
His lips hovered over hers with a desperate groan, as though he’d waited a lifetime to kiss her and could not wait another moment. And yet he was slow. Gentle. Nibbling and teasing, taking tiny sips from her lips as if she were the sweetest wine and he had all of eternity to taste her.
“Jack.”
Rose didn’t recognise her own voice. It was husky, a plea threaded just beneath the sound of it—subtle, but Jack heard it. He answered with another low, hungry groan.
She laced her fingers into his hair, her nails dragging over the back of his neck as she tugged his head down to hers. She opened her lips to him, urging him closer, making no secret of her desire.
He gasped against her mouth, cupping her face in his hands. His tongue slid between her lips, the kiss building and building until Rose was weak-kneed and breathless.
Jack’s hands sank into her hair, tilting her head gently as he dropped a dozen tiny kisses over her neck, his tongue darting out to taste her skin. She cried out when his mouth, hot and open, pressed into the arch of her throat.
“Jack.”
He sucked and nipped at her tender skin, and Rose clung to him, overwhelmed by sensations she had never known before. She wanted to touch him everywhere—with her hands and her mouth—his neck, his shoulders, the long, strong line of his back, his firm, rounded—
“Come with me, sweetheart.” Jack tugged gently at her hand, drawing her into the sitting room where the shadows were deeper. “Yes. Here.”
She was already reaching for him as he pulled her close again. He kissed her once more, the demand of his lips and tongue setting her alight until she was clinging to him, gasping for breath.
Jack brushed her hair back from her face, his blue eyes tender as he looked down at her.
“I don’t want to frighten you.”
Her body felt alive—stretched taut, as though tiny flames had burst across her skin in the wake of his stroking fingertips. She was one caress away from exploding. Rose caught his wrist, dragged his hand down her neck and lower—lower—where she needed his touch most.
Colour flared across his cheekbones as he cupped her breast with a groan, slipping his hands inside the kimono.
“Rose…”
She pressed her fingers to his lips. “I’m not afraid, Jack.”
She was a little afraid—but not of him. Never of him.She was afraid of herself—of how easy it would be to forget everything: her family, Cal, the reason she was here—and lose herself in him entirely. She could leave her family so quickly. Leave this world. Leave everything she had ever known. She could do it all, just to take a chance on this beautiful man she had known for days.
“What if I am?” Jack asked, his voice gentle, almost childlike.
Rose knew his nerves well enough by now, but seeing the appreciative warmth in his gaze made her own begin to ebb.
“Then just put your hands on me, Jack.”
“So beautiful.” He traced his fingertips over the curves of her breasts, his body going rigid against hers when she whimpered in response.
Rose couldn’t speak. Another soft cry broke from her lips as he brushed his thumb over a nipple—just the lightest stroke, more tease than caress—until he wrung another whimper from her. Then he began to stroke her in earnest, his gaze locked on her face as he caressed both nipples, circling and pinching the stiffened nubs until Rose cried out and grasped his forearms to steady herself, her fingernails digging into his flesh.
“You’re so sensitive.” His tone was soothing, almost reverent, though his wicked fingers never stilled, dragging back and forth over the aching peaks. “Are you all right?”
Rose dragged a trembling hand to her mouth, biting down on her fingers to smother her moans—because God, what if someone heard? His hot mouth closed over a nipple and drew on her until she was shaking, the fabric of her kimono clinging maddeningly to the straining peak.
“Yes, Jack. I am all right.”
She tugged gently but firmly at his sun-kissed locks, urging him on with soft murmurs and broken pleas—until he suddenly tensed and lifted away from her.
Jack’s breath caught. Then his chest rose beneath her cheek in a long, unsteady sigh, as if he’d waited an eternity to hear those words. For her to be all right.
“Sweetheart,” he whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her temple.
Rose clung to him, joy and love and despair gathering like a storm inside her—beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. This was more than she had ever imagined love could be. She wanted to give him everything. All she carried inside her. Everything she had. Everything she was.
But it wouldn’t matter in the end. He would lose her—or perhaps it made more sense to say she would lose him. They would lose each other, because they could not simply exist untouched by consequence.
But now—tonight—this one night could still matter.
She lifted her head from his chest and propped it on her hand. “Jack, I…”
She fell silent, her tongue suddenly shy. What was she meant to say? She had never been with a man before. Before Jack, she had never even kissed one. She had no idea how to tell him that she wanted him.
But perhaps he already knew.
Rose’s lips curved faintly. She was in his arms, clad in nothing but her kimono.
Maybe she didn’t need to say anything more at all.“That’s an intriguing little smile.” Jack’s gaze dropped to her mouth. He traced his thumb over her lower lip but made no move to kiss her.
So she reached for him, curling her hand around his jaw and dragging it slowly over his neck and down his throat to his chest, the springy hairs there tickling her palm. He watched her closely, eyelids growing heavy as she slid her hands down his chest to his abdomen, unbuttoning the rest of his shirt as she went.
She traced a finger over the skin just above the waistband of his trousers—but he caught her hand, stilling her.
“Do you know what you’re doing?”
“Well, no.” She laughed softly, her hand still caressing his skin. “I was rather hoping you did.”
He dragged his knuckles down her cheek, his touch feather-light. He studied her for a long moment without speaking, blue eyes dark with heat and shadow.
“I know this much,” he said quietly. “If you do this, I won’t be able to let you go.”
She would be his. She would give herself to him—her virginity, her body, her soul. Jack would be the first and only. Forever.
Rose had never wanted anything more.
She told him so in the only way she knew how—gently pulling his hand from her face and placing a soft, reverent kiss in the centre of his palm. Then she kissed each of his fingers, every single one, even as they were stained with charcoal. With her own ink-marked fingers, she caressed his hand, appreciating his gift in its entirety.
Jack went still, his body tightening. Then, with a low, unsteady sigh, he cupped her face, thumbs stroking her porcelain cheeks, and brought his mouth down on hers.
He kissed her like a drowning man gulping air—rough and desperate at first, then softer, tender. His mouth clung to hers as he prodded delicately at the seam of her lips with the tip of his tongue, seeking entrance. Rose didn’t hesitate. She twined her arms around his neck, pulled him closer, and opened her mouth beneath his.
He groaned and gathered her closer, nibbling and teasing at her lips until she went limp against him—boneless, breathless, stunned that anything could feel as good as his mouth on hers. The angles of his warm, hard body pressed perfectly into her soft curves, leaving no space between them.
He kissed her again and again until the sitting room, the crackling fire, his past, her fiancé, and their doomed future faded from existence. All she knew was his warmth, the hot, slick slide of his tongue, the sharp intake of his breath when her fingernails grazed the bare skin of his back.
Jack eased her back against the divan, his legs tangling with hers, one thick, hard thigh settling between them as he moved over her—close, careful not to crush her beneath his weight.
“You need to be kissed everywhere. Every inch of you. Here.” He dropped a tiny kiss on one corner of her mouth, then the other. “Here,” he murmured, raining soft, open-mouthed kisses over her eyelids and cheeks, the pulse at her throat. “And here,” he whispered, grazing his teeth lightly along her neck.
“Jack.” Rose squirmed as his teeth closed over her earlobe, her startled gasp melting into a moan as he tugged gently, his warm breath teasing her ear. She stroked and tugged at his hair, drawing a hungry groan from his lips with each pull.
When she could no longer bear his teasing, Rose guided his head down—slowly, carefully—until his cheek rested over her heart.
“Kiss me here, Jack,” she whispered, drawing his hand to the curve of her breast. He let out a soft groan before cupping her breast in his palm, hesitation surrounding her nipple with his thumb as he dragged it back and forth across the tender nub until it hardened and darkened to a deep pink, the blushing tip easily visible beneath the thin fabric of her kimono. He pulled back to gaze down at her, breath ragged, seemingly mesmerised by her breasts—by her nipple straining for his touch. He licked his lips, hovering for a long, teasing moment before leaning down and drawing her nipple into his mouth.
Rose gasped and cupped the back of his head, holding him there, her fingernails gently scraping his nape. He lingered for long, breathless moments, wetting the fabric of her kimono before lifting his head again to look at her with hot blue eyes, a deep flush spread across his cheekbones. She urged him back down, crying out when he took her deep into the heated cavern of his mouth once more, suckling and drawing mercilessly on one nipple while his thumb stroked the other. The exquisite torture went on and on until both her nipples were flushed and peaked for him, and Rose was squirming against the divan, unable to contain her breathless cries and whimpers.
She might have blushed at her wantonness if Jack hadn’t been just as undone as she was. By the time he finally relinquished her breasts with one last lingering stroke of his tongue, he was moving against her, thrusting subtly. His chest gleamed with a fine sheen of sweat, his breath sawing in and out of him. He didn’t seem aware of his own movement, his hips rocking in mindless, desperate arousal—until she reached down between them and, with one careful flick of her fingers, slipped open the buttons of his trousers.
He froze, then swallowed.
“Rose… are you sure you’re— is this what you want?”
She smiled and reached up, tugging gently at a messy lock of his dark blond hair.
He looked so young then, almost boyish, his eyes softening his face. She wanted to play with that hair forever, to wake with her fingers buried in it. There was something about it—like a curtain drawn over the depths of his blue eyes, hiding what lay beneath.
“Yes. I want you, Jack.”
She didn’t hesitate. She took his hand, dragged it down her thigh to the hem of her kimono, and closed his fingers around the fabric.
He paused only long enough to draw a deep breath before gripping the fragile linen. He pulled it completely open, the fluttering cloth tickling her belly and brushing over her tender nipples before he slid it down her arms and tossed it over the side of the divan.
Rose fell back against the pillows arranged for her to pose, a shy smile touching her lips as Jack gazed down at her, his breathing far from steady, feverish blue eyes taking her in.
“Is that a blush?” A soft smile curved his mouth as he brushed gentle fingers along her cheek. “Here… and here too.”
He followed the sweep of pink from her face down her neck, his smile fading as his gaze travelled lower—lower still.
Rose couldn’t speak. She couldn’t move. She could barely lift her eyes, mesmerised by his murmured words and the reverent glide of his hands over her skin. He seemed unable to stop touching her—her neck, her shoulders, the tender skin beneath her breasts, the soft swell of her belly—until at last his hands settled on the inside of her thighs, and he eased them gently apart. He caught his breath as he looked at her centre, his gentle hands holding her open for his gaze. Rose felt her blush deepen, but it never occurred to her to cover herself or push him away. She wanted him to look at her—to see the desire in his eyes as he gazed down at her.
“God, look at you.” He toyed with the dark curls between her thighs, his blue eyes hot—and then, before Rose realised what he intended, he brushed his thumb over her damp centre.
She twitched and arched beneath him as heat pooled low in her belly, the shock of it stealing her breath.
Jack’s gaze snapped to her face, a small, knowing smile touching his lips.
“No—don’t do that.”
Rose had pressed the back of her hand to her mouth to smother her cries, but he reached up and gently tugged it away.
“I want to hear you,” he said softly.
Rose’s blush seared her skin. She didn’t know whether it was embarrassment or arousal—but when Jack took both her wrists and drew them above her head, she kept them there. Whatever self-consciousness remained quickly dissolved into a desire unlike anything she had ever known.
Jack dragged his thumb there again. His touch was light at first—soft, barely there—just the tip of his thumb brushing the tender bud at her centre. As her breathless moans grew more desperate, his touch became more deliberate, circling the straining nub again and again, teasing and stroking it. Still light, still maddening—but faster now.
Tiny, helpless cries spilled from Rose’s lips as he increased the pressure, his slick fingers working her, gliding over her centre. Her hips began to move instinctively in time with his hand, chasing the sensation. He withdrew his touch for a brief moment, leaving only the brush of his hot breath over her aching core and the firm press of his palms against the insides of her thighs.
A fleeting thought crossed Rose’s mind—she would have given him anything he asked for in that moment, anything at all—but it vanished instantly when she felt something flutter there… a soft tickle, the brief flick of the tip of his tongue, once, then again—
And then, over and over.
Teasing. Stroking. Making her wild for him. Her hips arched helplessly, seeking his mouth as he denied and returned, denied and returned, driving her higher with each pass.
She whimpered and moaned and cried out for him, and Jack gave her more—more than she knew how to ask for, more than she had ever imagined. His hot, panting breaths, his mouth and tongue, kissing and nibbling and drawing her closer, his low, crooning voice murmuring how beautiful she was, how perfect—urging her to take what she needed.
To take her pleasure. Then she fell—tumbling over the edge into a bliss she had never known, sharp and sweet all at once. Jack stayed with her, his hands holding her hips to the divan as he guided her through the delirium, his mouth gentling and slowing as the peak passed. The knot inside her unravelled, slow and achingly sweet, until she lay boneless against the bed, half-dazed, Jack’s head resting on her belly, her hands tangled in his hair.
It was some time before Rose returned to herself. Her breathing finally calmed enough that she could lift her head. Jack looked up as soon as he felt her move, a satisfied smile curving his lips when he saw her face.
“Are you—was that all right?”
An incredulous laugh escaped Rose as she gave his hair a playful tug. “All right? It was better than all right. Although I may never move again.”
Jack’s smile widened, pleased—unabashedly so—at the thought that he had undone her so thoroughly. He lifted his head from her belly as she held out her arms, then shifted up the bed to gather her close. He kissed her forehead and eased her head against his chest.
But that wasn’t all.
Rose was acutely aware of the long, hard length he was carefully keeping from pressing into her hip—aware that he hadn’t taken his pleasure, that he was undoubtedly suffering for it. She also knew he was trying to be decent. Tender.
She would not have it.
Rose lifted her head from his chest, and before he could react she had scrambled onto her knees. Whatever expression crossed her face gave her away immediately; Jack’s eyes widened as they met hers.
“Rose, what are you—”
She braced her hands on his chest and, in one smooth motion, settled herself atop him, her thighs straddling his hips. Her gaze roamed hungrily over his bare chest and flat stomach. “I’m not done,” she murmured, teasing her fingers through the dark line of hair that disappeared downward.
His mouth opened, but no words came. His heated gaze moved slowly over her bare, flushed skin, lingering on the curves of her breasts.
“Rose…”
He trailed off, mesmerised, as she played with the springy hair on his belly, her fingernails scraping lightly over his skin. Then she slipped her hand beneath the waistband of his trousers and drew him free—hard and aching—from the crumpled folds of his falls.
“Rose…” He swallowed, his gaze lifting to meet hers.
Rose hesitated, shyness overtaking her, but the long, hard length throbbing against her palm—and the need in his eyes, the ragged edge to his breath—decided her.
“I’ve never touched a man before in my life,” she murmured as she began to caress him, watching carefully for his reaction. Sitting astride him, her breasts fully bared, her stomach no longer flattened by the illusion of a corset, she felt more beautiful than she ever had before.
“Rose, I—ah.” Jack broke off with a gasp as she dragged her hand up, then down again, her eyes widening in wonder at the slick glide of skin beneath her palm. She bit her lip as she met his gaze. “Is this… right?”
Jack stared up at her, eyelids falling to half-mast, lips parting as she continued to stroke him.
“Yes,” he managed on a low, broken groan. He shifted beneath her, spreading his thighs wider, helplessly.
He didn’t need to say anything more. His fractured moans and strangled breaths told her everything. Rose tightened her grip, transfixed, as he began to meet her movements with subtle thrusts of his hips. She slid her thumb to circle his tip, her tongue darting out to wet her lower lip when his hips jerked sharply.
A groan tore from him—and suddenly Rose was on her back, Jack nudging her legs apart with his hips.
“Do you want me?” He slipped his hand between her thighs, parting her swollen flesh with gentle fingers as he stroked her.
“Yes.” Rose sighed, twining her arms around his neck. “I want all of you. I want you to make love to me.”
Jack’s body was taut with leashed desire, but he held back, his mouth roaming her hair, her neck, her breasts, his fingers circling and rubbing her eager nub, drawing whimpers from her throat. He pressed a tender kiss to her lips—still unhurried, still careful—until at last, dear God, at last, with a guttural groan, he eased the tip of his hard length inside her.
He stilled when he met resistance, every muscle tensing with restraint.
“I don’t want to hurt you.”
“No—you won’t. You can’t…” Rose arched into him, clawing at his sweat-slick back.
Jack groaned again, then with a careful shift of his hips, thrust fully inside. Rose gasped at the sharp flare of pain, but he crooned softly against her neck, murmuring reassurance until the sting faded and her body softened around him.
He drew back to search her face, blue eyes dark with concern. He began to speak, but Rose touched her fingers to his lips, silencing him.
“I need you.”
Her virginity was gone. He was inside her. They were one.
Jack closed his eyes briefly, then began to move—slow, cautious thrusts at first, until restraint became impossible. Rose wrapped her legs around his hips, urging him on.
A desperate groan ripped from Jack as he surged forward. Rose sank her nails into his shoulders, a needy cry on her lips. His heated length seemed to swell within her, driving her closer to that mindless pleasure with every thrust. She clung to him as the pressure coiled tighter and tighter until, with a fierce snap of his hips, it shattered inside her.
It was different from before. Deeper. More consuming.
Mind-altering.
Soul-shattering.
“Rose, I’m going to—” Jack broke off with a gasp, burying his face in her neck as her body clenched around him, dragging him into his release. There was no stopping it. He trembled violently, overwhelmed by the intensity of it, something he had never known before.
Rose searched his face, and somehow, her eyes reflected his own.
“You’re trembling.”
“I’m all right,” Jack murmured, kissing her forehead. “You’re shaking too.”
He held her close until the tremors faded, then lifted himself onto his forearms and looked down at her.
“Tell me you’re all right.”
Rose’s body was flushed and languid, her limbs so heavy with pleasure she felt boneless. She smiled sleepily and nodded.
“I feel like my life has just changed.”
“It has, sweetheart,” Jack said softly. “For us both.”
In freeing herself from Cal, Rose had unknowingly—willingly—bound herself to Jack. And instead of suffocating her, it felt like freedom.
They lay tangled together as the fire burned low, the world beyond the room reduced to nothing more than shadow and silence. Jack’s arm was firm around her waist, not confining, not claiming—simply there, steady and sure. Rose traced idle patterns over his chest, listening to the slow return of his breathing, to the calm, living proof that this was real.
She thought of chains once mistaken for love. Of vows she had never spoken yet had nearly been trapped by. Of a life chosen for her, measured and locked away.
And then she thought of this—of warmth freely given, of hands that asked rather than took, of a bond forged not by duty or fear, but by choice.
She rested her cheek against his heart and felt it answer her, strong and unafraid.
She was bound now—but not in the way she had been taught to fear.
Bound by trust.
By tenderness.
By the quiet, irrevocable truth that she had chosen him—and he had chosen her.
And for the first time in her life, belonging felt like freedom.
Bound to you.
