Hunter was hiding in the shadows.
It wasn’t really nice of him to stand there gawking, to pry into Crosshair’s private moment. But, Hunter could not help himself. Nor could Hunter help the jealous feelings rising up again, like bile in his throat forming. Something so vile for sure, the green-eyed monster truly was.
True, Crosshair had returned. Not just to them, their team, their family. But also to Hunter. The two still at odds, alas, that had not deterred either of them to share their bunk, just like before. When things were still, well good. Or at least, status quo. Had they ever been good?
Well, that was neither here nor there as the past, was the past and there was nothing they could do about that now.
Now though, things weren't as great as that. At least where relations were concerned.
As it was, the two former partners were re-learning things about each other while trying to forgive and forget all the bad having happened in between even if there was a lot of that, the bad having gone around. All of those unspoken things were still hanging in the air. The staleness of the unsaid hanging there, almost palpable, able to taste the bitterness of it all.
They were trying though, really really hard, trying. At least the sex was still there, better than ever, perhaps. So there was that. Right?
And yet, here Crosshair was, kneeling, solemnly contemplating, as if praying? Holding the bucket of someone else. A reg no less. Someone Crosshair had clearly had dealings with. Someone who had meant something to Crosshair when he had been away from his team. With the Empire.
A reg, kriffing hell!!!
Hunter could not help those seething bad feelings rising up oh so very fast.
The ugly green-eyed monster usually reserved for Crosshair to deal with in their past, now present in Hunter!
Well, it wasn’t exactly true. Hunter had been jealous in the past as well, but it was mostly Crosshair having done his little dances with said monster. As Hunter having had his fair share of offers when they’d first gotten together. Something which Crosshair had completely thrown tantrums for.
And now, the sniper was completely changed. Cool and calm and collected. Not showing too much in emotion, not really. At least, nothing of jealousy, nothing of anything really, not even the pain which he oh so clearly housed.
That is, until now.
As what Hunter did witness was certainly something of a surprise. And, even if not a first, was the tears running down Crosshair’s cheeks as he pulled the bucket in for a keldabe kiss. Honouring the dead. As clearly, this was a memorial. The several clone helmets Crosshair had already neatly stacked onto the shelf.
Hunter’s eyes flew impossibly wide. Not really believing what he was seeing.
“I miss you, Mayday.”
The words spoken in a soft almost an inaudible whisper, but Hunter heard it loud and clear just the same..
This, reg, had clearly meant more to Crosshair than Hunter could even fathom.
Most likely the reg having been the reason Crosshair had left the Empire. Not that Crosshair had admitted as much, or anything related to it really. Having hardly spoken anything about his time with the Empire. Something sure, but only when pressed upon.
But Hunter could put two and two together as it was all starting to add up.
Hunter felt a nausea hit him. Mostly because of his own feelings, his own jealousy. But also, Hunter felt afraid. So much so. As how could he compete with a ghost? It would be next to impossible to be better than someone who had clearly died a heroic death.
Hunter had no idea what to do with all the information he had just accumulated.
Deciding to remove himself from the scene and deny any knowledge of what he had just witnessed was the best bet to go with. But, and it was a big one, did Crosshair still want to be with him? Hunter, who was still alive? And yet… the doubt, as yes, there was a lot of that. The doubt ever present these days.
Hunter quickly made his way out from the room. Then trying to act all nonchalant when Crosshair finally emerged from there as well. With his red eyes all read, something which Hunter noted quickly before Crosshair covered it with his helmet. Crosshair then made a b-line towards the door.
“Where ya going Cross?” Hunter shouted after him.
“To check on the perimeter.”
Hunter did not object. He did not dare to. Only hoping Crosshair would still want to stay with them, in their home on Pabu. Hopefully share Hunter’s bed as well.
And perhaps, on day, to tell Hunter the story of the reg… the one of Mayday.
