It was a clear, starry night in Seaside Hill. The gentle sound of waves crashing against the shore provided a peaceful backdrop as Sonic the Hedgehog and Tangle the Lemur strolled along the beach. The moonlight reflected off the water, casting a soft glow over the sand.
“So, what’s the plan for tonight?” Tangle asked, her tail swaying behind her as she walked beside Sonic.
“I was thinking we could grab some chili dogs and just relax,” Sonic replied with a grin. “But I got a call from Tails earlier—he said something about a surprise.”
Tangle raised an eyebrow, curious. “A surprise, huh? Tails does know how to keep things interesting.”
As they continued walking, they spotted a familiar figure standing by a small bonfire further down the beach. It was Amy Rose, and beside her, surprisingly, was Shadow the Hedgehog. The two seemed deep in conversation, though Amy’s cheerful demeanor contrasted sharply with Shadow’s usual stoic expression.
Sonic and Tangle exchanged a glance before making their way over to the pair. “Hey, Amy! Shadow!” Sonic called out, waving as they approached.
Amy looked up and smiled brightly. “Sonic! Tangle! I’m so glad you could make it!”
Shadow simply nodded in acknowledgment, his arms crossed as he stood beside the fire.
Tangle tilted her head, a playful smile on her lips. “So, what’s going on here? Is this the surprise Tails mentioned?”
Amy blushed slightly, glancing at Shadow before answering. “Well, I thought it would be nice to have a small get-together on the beach. And Shadow… well, he was in the area and decided to join us.”
Sonic raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Shadow, hanging out by a bonfire on the beach? Now that’s something you don’t see every day.”
Shadow huffed, but there was a hint of a smirk on his face. “I can enjoy a peaceful evening just as much as anyone else, Sonic.”
Amy quickly changed the subject, her voice full of enthusiasm. “Anyway, I brought some snacks and drinks! I thought we could have a little bonfire party.”
Tangle’s eyes lit up. “Sounds like fun! And we’ve got the perfect spot for it.”
As the group settled around the fire, Sonic and Tangle couldn’t help but notice the subtle glances Amy kept stealing at Shadow. It was clear she was happy to have him there, even if Shadow wasn’t the most talkative companion.
“So, how have things been, Amy?” Tangle asked, her tone light and friendly.
Amy smiled, her cheeks slightly pink. “Oh, you know, the usual. Just keeping busy with missions and training. It’s nice to have some time to relax with friends.”
“And Shadow?” Sonic chimed in, his tone teasing. “What’s got you in such a good mood tonight?”
Shadow shot Sonic a mildly annoyed look but eventually answered. “Nothing in particular. I just decided to spend the evening away from G.U.N. headquarters.”
Sonic exchanged a knowing look with Tangle, and she decided to jump in. “You know, this kind of feels like a double date.”
Amy nearly choked on her drink, her face turning bright red. “W-What? A double date?”
Sonic laughed, nudging Tangle playfully. “Yeah, it kinda does, doesn’t it?”
Shadow remained silent, but there was a slight twitch of his lip that suggested he wasn’t entirely opposed to the idea.
Trying to change the subject, Amy quickly reached for a bag of marshmallows. “How about we make s’mores? It’s a bonfire tradition, after all.”
Tangle grinned, grabbing a stick and skewering a marshmallow. “Now you’re talking! I haven’t had s’mores in ages.”
As they roasted marshmallows over the fire, the conversation turned to lighter topics. They shared stories of recent adventures, laughed over Tangle’s energetic recounting of her latest escapade, and even got Shadow to crack a small smile when Amy accidentally dropped her marshmallow into the flames.
Sonic leaned back, enjoying the warmth of the fire and the company of his friends. He couldn’t help but notice how comfortable Amy and Shadow seemed around each other, even if they were trying to hide it. There was a quiet understanding between them, a connection that was different from anything Sonic had seen before.
After a while, Amy excused herself to grab more drinks from the cooler, leaving Shadow alone with Sonic and Tangle. Sensing an opportunity, Tangle leaned closer to Shadow, her voice low.
“So, Shadow,” she began, her tone teasing, “how long have you and Amy been spending time together?”
Shadow’s eyes narrowed slightly, but there was no malice in his response. “Not long. She’s… persistent, but not unpleasant to be around.”
Tangle grinned, satisfied with his answer. “Well, it’s good to see you two getting along. Amy’s a great friend, and she deserves someone who appreciates her.”
Shadow didn’t respond, but his gaze softened as he watched Amy return with the drinks. Sonic and Tangle exchanged a quick glance, silently agreeing that there was more to this budding relationship than met the eye.
As the night wore on, the group continued to enjoy each other’s company, the fire crackling softly in the background. Sonic and Tangle shared a contented smile, happy to see their friend finding a connection with someone unexpected.
Eventually, the fire began to die down, and the chilly night air made its presence known. Amy shivered slightly, and before she could reach for her jacket, Shadow silently draped his over her shoulders. Amy looked up at him in surprise, her eyes softening as she murmured a quiet thank you.
Tangle couldn’t help but smile at the sight, nudging Sonic. “Looks like tonight turned out better than we expected.”
Sonic nodded, a satisfied grin on his face. “Yeah, it did. Maybe we should let them have more of these ‘double dates’ in the future.”
With the fire nearly out and the night growing late, the group decided it was time to head home. As they walked back along the beach, Sonic and Tangle hung back, giving Amy and Shadow a bit of space. They watched as the two shared a quiet conversation, their steps perfectly in sync.
“You know, I think Amy might have finally met her match,” Tangle said softly.
Sonic smiled, feeling a sense of pride for his friend. “Yeah, she has. And Shadow? He’s in good hands with Amy.”
As they reached the end of the beach, the group parted ways, each heading back to their respective homes. But Sonic and Tangle knew that tonight had been more than just a casual hangout—it had been the start of something new for Amy and Shadow, and they were happy to have been there to witness it.
With the promise of more adventures and perhaps a few more double dates in the future, Sonic and Tangle walked off into the night, ready for whatever came next.
