“C’mon guys!” Choso yelled, dragging his brothers into the living room.
There sat a bassinet, holding a newborn boy with a small layer of pink fuzz on top of his head.
“Choso, remember to keep his voice down, you don’t want to scare him,” said a woman with short black hair, the brother’s mother.
“Sorry,” he said quietly. “Can I hold him now?”
“If you promise to be careful,”
Choso nodded vigorously, allowing his mother to hand the baby to him.
“He’s so tiny…” said Eso, one of Choso’s brothers. He had a small amount of brown hair, and wasn’t wearing a shirt.
“You were that tiny once too,” Choso said.
“Nuh-uh! There's no way!”
“It's true. I was there,”
“Boys,” their mother said. “No fighting around Yuuji please,”
Choso held his youngest brother like he was the most precious thing he’d ever seen. In the other room, a phone rang.
“Choso, can you watch Yuuji while I answer that?”
Choso nodded again.
The mother left the room, leaving the four brothers behind in the living room.
“I don’ get it…” said Kechizu, the other brother. He was a short boy with a terrible slouch missing his two front teeth. He had long black hair, visibly unbrushed.
“He’s our new brother…” Choso said.
“That Yugi?” Kechizu asked.
“Yuuji,” Choso corrected. “Yuu-ji,”
Kechizu nodded.
“And I wath like that?”
Choso nodded.
“He looks ugly,” said Eso.
“Nuh-uh!” Choso refuted.
“Uh-huh! He looks like- like- some sort of vegetable!”
“You looked like that too!” Choso refuted, almost yelling.
“Mommy said not to fight!” Kechizu interrupted. Choso nodded very seriously, but Eso still looked indignant.
“Did not…” he mumbled.
Choso felt the bundle in his arms begin to stir, opening his eyes. Yuuji looked up at his oldest brother reaching his tiny hand up to grab the purple scarf wrapped poorly around Choso’s neck, which he always wore.
“Yuuji…” Choso whispered. “Big brother’s here…”
The moment of peace was broken when Eso spoke again.
“This is boring…” he complained, as he began to walk out of the room.
“Wait for me!” Kechizu yelled. “Wanna play with you!”
“No yelling!” Choso whispered harshly, but the boys had already left the room. His harsh tone had upset Yuuji, who had begun to squirm, and let out a small whine.
“Shh…” Choso continued, bouncing him in his arms. “Big Brother is here…”
Yuuji calmed, resting his head against Choso’s scarf, beginning to drift off again.
It wasn’t long before his mother returned from her call, noticing the way Yuuji was resting against Choso.
“You’re such a good brother,” she said. Choso nodded, still focused on the baby in his arms.
“I love you…” Choso whispered. “Little brother...
