Chapter 1: 1. Pilot

Chapter Text

Megumi never had a problem with the way he was, even though it seemed everyone else had a problem with it.

Baggy pants, big shirt, a chain on the loops of his pants, dirty shoes. His messy hair that never seemed to sit flat on his head, no matter how much he tried.

The teenager had not a clue why everyone was so bothered.

Megumi lived the way he wanted to live.

And he didn't really have a care in the world what others thought of him.

People knew that, so they continued with the comments. That Megumi continued to ignore.

Day after day in school, he walked down the halls, hair bouncing with each step. His eyes tired, like he got no rest the night before. Maybe he didnt.

That was true, the guy was a insomniac afterall. And when he couldn't sleep, music was where he went.

Wether it was music for his band class, or music he was working on himself. He went to music when he had nothing else.

Because he did not have anything else after all. Again, Megumi was not ashamed.

Megumi was so to himself, he wasn't aware of the curious eyes of a brown eyed guy his age on him as he weaved through crowds of slow walkers, cursing them in his head.

The halls aren't even congested... why aren't they moving? So annoying.

Someone falls into step beside him, and he pays no mind, thinking it is just a passerby.

"Hey! Megumi, right?"

Megumi pauses, recognizing that god awful voice. Too happy for it's own good. He turns his head to the pink haired teen next to him. Staring at that smile plastered on his face.

"What?"

"Woah! No need to act all stern!" Yuji Itadori exclaims, raising his hands in surrender. "Just wanted to say hi! And maybe introduce myself..??"

Megumi makes a weird face subconsciously, and he realizes he does when Yuji's face turns a bit hurt. "We've... gone to the same school for a few years now.. Yuji. I know who you are."

Yuji's sad expression is quickly replaces by raised eyebrows. "Oh I thought maybe you didn't- ah, whatever! Still! What class do you have?"

Megumi holds back a sigh of annoyance as he continues walking, Yuji following. Why is this popular guy following him... it pissed him off. Megumi knew Yuji was too much of a sweet soul to do anything hurtful, but he still wondered if maybe he had something up his sleeves. If he was one of those nice guys that pretended.

No... no that isnt possible. Yuji genuinely is just nice. There isnt an ounce of rude in his blood, unless it's called for.

Everyone knew Yuji Itadori packed a mean punch. Inhumane strength.

"Uhh hellooo?"

Megumi snapped out of his daze, realizing Yuji was still following. And waiting on an answer to his question.

"...English."

"Ohhh." Yuji stuffs his hands into his pockets, "I have psychology... Didnt even want the elective, but they gave it to me."

"Can you change it?."

"No. I tried..." The pink haired teen scratches his neck, then adjusts his book bag.

Megumi sighs, "Oh well..."

"Aren't you a joy to talk to."

Megumi could sense the teasing in Yuji's voice, but he still stopped walking and gave the boy a look. "Why are you still following me?"

Yuji halts, looking towards Megumi confused. "I just- wanted to talk with you." he shrugs.

Megumi narrows his eyes, "Well my class is right here. So." he turns to the door.

"Oh! Right! Um.. See you around??"

He sighs, shrugging. "Okay." Then Megumi steps into the classroom. Walking through the rows of desks and taking his seat in his normal back corner chair.

As he got his journal out, which had sharpie graffiti all over the cover slowly fading while some were newer, he leaned back and exhaled in relief. He's never had to.. talk.. that much to such a energetic boy. He went on a tangent about what classes he wanted! He could've went and said all of that to one of his own friends.

Megumi rubs the bridge of his nose, shaking his head.

"What's up with you?" A deep voice asked in front of him. Just as the teacher was getting ready to speak.

Megumi dropped his hand, opening his eyes and looking at the large male. Todo. God, this guy loved to talk to him too. But they weren't friendly either.

So, he just gives him a 'leave me alone' look, and Todo shrugs and sits down. Far too big for the small desks in every classroom.

Finally. No more people would be messing with him today. Finally... It was all he thought about before dazing off and doodling as the teacher began to speak.

~

School's ended and Megumi had immediately walked out and opened up his phone. Not a single notification... if you dont count the million spam texts everyone gets.

With his free hand he searches his deep pocket for his eyes, finding them and finally looking up from his phone as he approaches the parking lot, looking for his black car. And that was when he spotted pink hair.

A pink haired boy holding his phone's camera up to the sky over the school. Taking pictures. It wasnt even close to a  good time to be taking pictures like that... but if you knew Yuji Itadori, you'd know he adores the sky.

Yuji will stay up and wait for the sun to set to find the perfect shot. Will go up and beyond for one.

Megumi didn't know him all that well he just.. has taken a few glances at the teen's instagram.

Every post is a sunset or a sunrise. Sometimes just scenic, sometimes it includes his silhouette, darkened by the bright sky in front of his body. Or some other person. It always made Megumi wonder if the boy had a partner. A girlfriend.

Megumi approaches Yuji as he's lowering his phone, a look of shock appearing on his face as Megumi shows up on his camera, approaching him. He lowers his phone.

"Megumi?"

He stops. Wondering why  Yuji looked so shocked when he was standing right next to his car..

"What are you doing?" he asks.

Megumi's eyes slide to the car beside them, Yuji's following, then back at his face.

"This is my car."

A small gasp comes from Yuji and he puts his phone away, "Oh I probably looked so creepy standing here-" he laughs. "Sorry, man!"

"It's... It's fine." Megumi unlocks his car, stepping to the door and opening it. Yuji side steps away, watching him as he threw his bag into the car.

He's about to get in, but pauses as he realizes Yuji is still standing there staring at him. So he looks at him once again.

"Do you.. need something?"

"No-"

Megumi narrows his eyes. "I can tell you want to say something..."

Yuji's face darkens and he averts his eyes.* "I just... reeally dont want to take a bus home. And since I'm already here and we're budssss-"

"Buds?"

"You know-! Friends... pals...-"

"When did we become friends?"

Megumi was just genuinely asking. No ones ever considered calling him a friend. Let alone a person he's talked to once in his life.

Yuji frowns. "I thought-..."

"You thought wrong." He begins to get in his car, closing the door. But a strong hand stops it, and a shock is sent through his body because he almost crushed said hand. He looked up at Yuji.

"Please, man!?"

Megumi stares and stares at the other guy, a small look of sterness on his face. But oh so slowly.. it softens. Megumi is convicned.

"Fine. Let go."

"Yes!" Yuji exclaims, letting go of the door and it immediately shuts. He hurries around and gets in, putting his bag in the floorboard.

He looked so happy.

Megumi paid it no mind, even as he drove and Yuji controlled the music on the radio. Even as he hummed. Megumi was driving someone home, for some odd reason.

He wasnt sure if he liked it or not.

Eventually he was deaccelerating in front of a small house in the subburbs, turning the music off as Yuji thanks him and ran inside.

He stared at the boy running off, till he disappeared into the house. And his car was quiet again.

Looking at the empty seat, Megumi taps the steering wheel, then glances back at the house.

He needs to leave.

So he does. He puts the car into drive and speeds out of the neighborhood. In silence.
