Work Header

By Your Side

Summary:

The entire space is dark, save for the light brightening the desk, allowing Jiang Cheng to continue his work. He’s haunched over some paperwork, one hand clenched tightly around his writing pen, while he taps his fingers on the desk with the other.

Truly a picture perfect of hard work and concentration.

Still, Wangji can tell he’s straining his eyes, and both his neck and forehead veins are protruding slightly. He’s got a headache.

Notes:

here we goooo…another small thing. pls do enjoy!

Work Text:

Wangji sighs, his attempts at falling asleep are proving to be futile. He turns his head sideways, and frowns. Jiang Cheng has yet to come to bed. His side lays cold and empty, still made from earlier this morning.

It isn’t particularly late, nor surprising that the man is still in his study, working the night away without a care for himself or his body.

Wangji sighs again.

He lifts the covers off of his body, grabbing a robe to cover himself before exiting their sleeping chambers and making his way down the hall, and around the corner towards the Sect Leader’s office.

Without bothering to knock, he pushes the door open, and silently makes his way inside.

It’s no wonder, the man skipped breakfast, who knows if he even had anything for lunch and he barely had any dinner.

“It’s time for bed, Sect Leader” Wangji hums, standing in front of Jiang Cheng’s desk. Said man startles slightly, looking up at him with rapidly blinking eyes.

“Tsk” Jiang Cheng scoffs, “it’s still far too early, or early enough if you’re still awake anyways” he smirks.

Wangji narrows his eyes, and Jiang Cheng laughs softly before shaking his head and turning back to the paperwork on his desk.

With a sigh, Wangji goes around the side of the desk and plops himself right on Jiang Cheng’s lap, arms resting around his neck.

“It is bedtime, my dear” Wangji drawls, pecking Jiang Cheng’s slightly parted lips. “There’s no need to strain yourself with a headache”

“Mn” Jiang Cheng says, kissing Wangji. “And what makes you think I am straining myself? Who said I had a headache?”

And perhaps Wangji has spent too much time by his husband’s side and is picking up a few bad habits, because he rolls his eyes at Jiang Cheng and scoffs.

“You need to take better care of yourself, darling”. Wangji accommodates himself better in Jiang Cheng’s lap, reaching up to massage his husband’s temples.

Jiang Cheng releases a shuddering breath, his body going limp on his chair from the relief. Wangji then digs his fingers through his hair to massage his head.

“Your hands are magic” Jiang Cheng mumbles, eyes closed. He takes one of Wangji’s hands and brings it up to his lips, giving it a loving kiss.

“Zhao Lian told me you skipped all your meals today”

“Zhao Lian is a liar, I had some food—I think—maybe?”

“Wanyin” Wangji says warningly, while still massaging his head.

“I did have a meat bun for lunch!” Jiang Cheng argues.

“You are a grown man, that’s a mere snack even for Fairy” Wangji chastises.

“Sorry, I know—I was too preoccupied with all these new trade policies and contracts coming our way, I just—“

“I understand, my heart” Wangji sighs, pressing a gentle kiss to Jiang Cheng’s throbbing forehead, “but you cannot help your sect to your best abilities when you neglect your health. The simplest things as having regular meals, and staying hydrated—must I always be near to remind you”

“You must” Jiang Cheng concedes. “You cannot leave Lotus Pier for even a day, I’ll simply pass away”

“Come on, up” Wangji says instead, rolling his eyes at his husband. “Let’s get you to bed, I’ll run you a hot bath”

“Fine, but can you massage my head a little longer?”

“I’ll wash your hair, I can massage it then”

“Fine” Jiang Cheng says with a pout, he takes Wangji’s hand and follows him down the hall. He guesses work can always wait for the next day anyways.
