Work Text:
Why had Lovino agreed to a sunrise hike? It’s not like he didn’t know what he was getting into. It was in the title after all. But when Matthew’s eyes lit up like that…How could he have said ‘no.’
Matthew was far off ahead looking around in awe at the trees and brush, even though he apparently had walked this trail countless times. Normally, Lovino would be endeared, but he was not a morning person. And he was definitely not a 5:30 AM morning person. At least he wasn’t sweating his balls off in the crisp pre-autumn air.
“Matt,” he panted. “Could…Could you maybe…huff…slow down.”
Matthew stopped in his tracks and twirled around. “Oh, I’m sorry.” Matthew’s eyes widened when his gaze fell on the red-faced, panting Lovino, hunched over, gripping onto a tree for dear life. He rushed over to his lover. “Are you okay? Oh my god, I’m sorry. Shit…uh…”
“Don’t. I’m the one who agreed to this.”
Matthew was quiet for a moment. Lip between his teeth, eyes darting around. “You getting tired?”
“You think?”
He didn’t mean to sound so harsh. He tried not to be snippy with Matthew because he knew he was a kind soul and meant well. But it was kind of hard so early in the morning.
“Here.” Matthew turned around and crouched with his back to Lovino. Lovino quirked a brow.
“What are you doing?”
Matthew peeked over his shoulder. “Hop on. It’s not much farther. And we don’t have much more time.”
Lovino grimaced but complied. When Matthew rose to his feet, Lovino gripped onto his neck for dear life. Matthew chuckled. Never mind, scratch that ‘kind soul’ part.
Lovino smacked him lightly on the back of the head. “Not my fault you're
a freakishly tall, bastard.”
“I’m sorry.”
Lovino knew he really wasn’t.
When they reached the edge of the cliff, the first rays of dawn stretched out, the sky waking up for the day. Below the lake was still, tinged with gold. Watercoloured clouds of pink, peach, and pastel yellow dotted the sky. Everything was frozen for a moment in the warm glow.
Lovino’s mouth hung open, eyes wide.
“Beautiful isn’t it?” Matthew whispered. “See why I wanted to bring you here so badly.”
“Okay…Maybe you were right. This is worth it.”
Lovino tapped Matthew’s shoulder to let him down. He pressed against his lover’s side before tugging him down by the ear so he could press a kiss to Matthew’s cheek.
Matthew smirked. Cradling Lovino’s face with one hand and wrapping his arm around his shoulder with the other. Leaning down he connected their lips in a slow, sensual kiss. Warm and soft as the colours rolling out around them.
As romantic as it all was, Lovino was still tired. He tried to hold back a yawn.
“We could go back now and sleep a bit more,” Matthew suggested, pulling Lovino closer and planting a kiss on top of his head.
“I’d like that,” Lovino slipped out, starting to yawn.
“Then come on.”
Matthew crouched down again. Lovino smiled softly to himself before crawling on. This time going more slowly, Matthew rose to his feet and started their trek back down to Matthew’s cottage.
