They take the time to savor the quiet while they can, before the chaos would arrive in a matter of hours. Wooyoung wants to pat himself on the back for scouting out probably the most perfect location possible for a day like this. It only took him months of scouring the deepest depths of Pinterest boards, as well as hours upon hours of Naver blogs until he found what he was looking for.
It’s almost fairytale-like, the way the place looked in the daytime. And Wooyoung has gone through enough Naver blogs to know that the house would only look more picturesque bathed in the natural moonlight, coupled with the fairy lights carefully strewn around the perimeter of the house. Part of him is excited to be surrounded by the people they loved most, celebrating probably the happiest day of his life - but for now, he’s content to savor the temporal silence with the one he’s chosen to spend the remainder of his days with.
“Hey, my darling cat, come here,” a voice that Wooyoung is content to fill his every waking hour with, gladly disrupts his little menagerie.
Wooyoung can’t help but smile, though banter was more of their usual love language. He turns in place, and standing behind him is Yunho, his fiance - if only for a few more hours until everything would change forever.
“Yes?” he says, trying not to let his lips contort too much from smiling so hard. He thinks that with the amount of smiling he’s been doing all day, his cheeks would be sore by the time they got to the dinner celebration.
“Come over here,” Yunho beckons, warmth in his words and expression, and Wooyoung nods, trying to resist the growing urge to become increasingly self-conscious in front of the camera. Yunho holds a gift that one of their closest friends, Mingi, had bought for his most recent birthday. It’s a camcorder that was probably more popular over a decade ago, but Yunho has grown to love the analog vibe the camera gives off. He already has some footage - a camping trip the both of them had taken, culminating in the fateful moment where Yunho asked Wooyoung to be by his side forever. Wooyoung gives the camera a somewhat sheepish wave, a bit uncharacteristic for him, who’s had much stage experience as a modern dancer.
Their first meeting went something like this - Wooyoung was part of one of the most renowned dance troupes in the country - while Yunho worked for a marketing firm that was helping to promote one of the troupe’s productions, a re-imagination of Swan Lake. One thing led to another, and the consistent proximity allowed for other things to bloom.
For Wooyoung, it was probably the first time that he felt like he didn’t have to fight hard for his love, to strive on near-perfect levels to sustain a relationship. He does that enough on stage, and after letting that bleed out into his personal life one too many times, Yunho had brought something long awaited for. It was almost too idyllic, the way it was so easy to love him. And Yunho sometimes seemed so selfless nearly to a fault, until Yunho convinced Wooyoung that he was in for the long run, for everything Wooyoung was and would become. So when it came to Yunho actually popping the question, it was something that Wooyoung didn’t expect, yet he knew deep within him that he already had his answer for a long time now.
And nearly six years on, here they were on this secluded, picture perfect forested property that would serve as the backdrop for their elopement. Wooyoung, when he was younger, once had more grandiose dreams for his wedding, but being around Yunho long enough had its effects too. Eventually, they decided to settle on something more private, surrounded by their closest ones with a surprise element to it - none of their guests actually knew that they were driving out to some corner of a forest in Kangwondo to attend a wedding.
Now, Wooyoung lets Yunho film him to his heart’s content with the slightly rickety camcorder of his. He decides to make himself look more comfortable, shifting himself so he’s leaning back on one of the wooden picnic benches provided by the property. Wooyoung lifts up one of his feet to show off his shoes. “It’s Converse,” he remarks casually. Yunho lowers the camcorder, presumably to try capturing his own shoes, but he nearly ends up dropping the camcorder, to Wooyoung’s great amusement. Yunho manages to catch it with his free hand just before it lands on the grass, before he walks over to sit next to Wooyoung. He starts to film their feet side by side, the both of them in matching pairs of sneakers, save for the shade of off white.
“Such character development,” Yunho jests, nudging Wooyoung lightly in the shoulder. He knows Wooyoung’s sartorial tastes well - his sneaker collection in their shared apartment was evident enough. He had a good mix of collector’s edition sneakers as well as some of the most well made brogues. But for this occasion, he opted for neither, instead allowing Yunho to surprise them with matching Converse sneakers. Perfect for a night of dancing around and partying, Yunho thinks.
Wooyoung snorts, resting his hand against Yunho’s arm before hooking Yunho’s ankle with his own. “Hey,” Wooyoung says with a slight yawn - since they’d woken up before the sun rose to make the hours-long drive from Seoul to this corner of Gangwondo - “Mr. Videographer, you need to take more compelling footage. It is a wedding after all, and your client from what I hear can get pretty picky.”
Yunho just laughs, always ever amused by his soon-to-be husband’s episodic dry humor. “Alright, then. Change of scenery it is.” Yunho lets Wooyoung lead the way, as he goes to one of the other picnic tables that’s stacked with various things they brought over. Wooyoung goes over to pick up a rather large bouquet, but he holds it down so that it’s just out of the camera’s angle.
“I want to ask you something,” Wooyoung says with an impish grin as he holds up the bouquet that’s made of daffodils and an assortment of other flowers - right next to his face - “who is the flower?”
Yunho’s responding snort is audible, and he quickly turns the camcorder to zoom in on the flowers instead before he drops the camcorder, undone by a laughing fit. Wooyoung narrows his eyes at him, going back to the bench with the other boxes of things to set the bouquet gently down to save for later. “Go record that instead,” Wooyoung grumbles, pointing to some mats that were set up on the floor from their picnic lunch earlier. It had probably been their last private meal for that day. Yunho decided to leave the mats as they were, just in case. Liking the way the shadows were cast on the mats, Yunho decides to film the seemingly mundane looking sight if only for posterity, for them to look back on a few anniversaries down the line.
“Can I try?” Wooyoung asks, already extending his hands towards the camcorder, and Yunho, having always found it a herculean task to say no to Wooyoung, hands it over with a slight smile. He watches as Wooyoung captures the place - and the day from his perspective. Yunho isn’t sure if it’s some avant garde artistic side of him that takes over, because soon he’s lying on the mat and filming Yunho from a rather awkward angle.
Feeling himself in a joking mood, Yunho decides to plop himself down onto Wooyoung, who lets out a startled yelp as he feels the weight of Yunho on his waist. Yunho quickly shuffles around on the mat, lying next to Wooyoung in a more comfortable, reclined posture, watching Wooyoung from the side. Wooyoung continues to film the house and the garden from his ground level angle, until he feels a slight tug to his elbow.
“Hey,” Yunho murmurs. “We’re really going to do this, huh,” his lips quiver, and soon they quip into a fond smile.
Wooyoung giggles, squinting with the glare of the sun as he records Yunho. “Yeah, yeah we are.”
“Thank you for saying yes to me, Wooyoung-ah,” Yunho shifts closer to press a featherlight kiss to Wooyoung’s fringe covering his forehead.
“Hey, I know I’m a catch,” Wooyoung says, unwilling to be soppy just yet. He knows that if he allowed that part of him to take over, the waterworks would only come in sooner than later - and he doesn’t want to have puffy, sore eyes before the ceremony. Definitely not something that should be captured for their wedding album.
Yunho shakes his head, but his expression is nothing but fond as he brushes through Wooyoung’s hair with his hand. They look into each other’s eyes in the momentary silence, and they need not say anything else. It’s enough. The silence passes, until in the distance Wooyoung’s sharp hearing catches the faint sound of cars driving in on the pebbled road. He smiles back at Yunho, who mirrors his excited expression.
“They’ll all be here soon,” Yunho slowly brushes Wooyoung’s cheek with his thumb, as though he’s re-learning the feeling all over again, “Are you ready? For all the incoming chaos?”
Wooyoung tosses his head back as he laughs, and Yunho thinks, no - knows he’s never seen anything more beautiful in nearly three decades of living. “I always am. Now, let’s go find our friends, and laugh at their deer in the headlights expressions when we tell them why exactly we dragged them into the middle of nowhere, on some seemingly random afternoon.”
Yunho laughs as Wooyoung tugs him upward from the mat to stand, and leads them into the beginning steps of a shared lifetime together.
