The Intimacy Hesitancy

Summary:

Sheldon is hesitant to engage in physical intimacy now that Amy is pregnant.

Work Text:

Sheldon Cooper was a man who thrived on structure. Routine was his lifeblood, a carefully crafted framework that allowed him to navigate the chaos of the world with some semblance of order. It was this need for structure that led to his now infamous "Relationship Agreement" with Amy Farrah Fowler, his beloved wife and partner in all things scientific and beyond. Every aspect of their life together was meticulously planned, including their intimate moments—a subject Sheldon had approached with the same analytical precision he applied to his research.

But tonight, as Sheldon prepared for one of those scheduled intimate moments, he found himself grappling with an unexpected and unfamiliar sensation: doubt.

The cause of this doubt was currently sitting across from him on the couch, engrossed in a medical journal, her brow furrowed in concentration. Amy was twelve weeks pregnant with their first child—a monumental event that had sent Sheldon into a tailspin of emotions ranging from pure joy to abject terror. He had, of course, read every available book on pregnancy, studied numerous lectures on the physiological and psychological effects of pregnancy, and even consulted with a few experts in the field—all in an attempt to be as prepared as humanly possible for the impending arrival of their progeny. Yet, despite all his research, there was one area where his usually sharp mind had hit a snag: coitus.

He had never imagined that something as mechanical, as routine, as the scheduled act of coitus would become so fraught with uncertainty. But now, with Amy carrying their child, Sheldon found himself questioning everything.

As he sat beside her on the couch, his fingers drumming against his leg in a nervous rhythm, he finally decided to broach the subject.

“Amy,” he began, his voice tinged with the seriousness of someone about to present a scientific paper. “I know I’m not supposed to tell you this, and I’m well aware that you don’t appreciate it when I make announcements about it, but... coitus is scheduled for tonight.”

Amy looked up from her journal, her eyes meeting his with a mix of amusement and curiosity. “Oh. Okay,” she replied, setting the journal aside. Then, with a playful smile, she added, “Talk dirty to me?”

Sheldon blinked, his brain momentarily short-circuiting at the unexpected request. “You know I would, but... the parameters have changed recently, and I’m not entirely sure it’s a good idea.”

Amy raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. “Why not?”

Sheldon shifted uncomfortably, his hands now clasped together in his lap as he attempted to gather his thoughts. “Well, as you are currently twelve weeks pregnant, the dynamics of our physical interactions have been... altered. I’ve calculated the risks and benefits of engaging in coitus at this stage, and I find myself concerned about the potential... complications.”

Amy chuckled, reaching out to place a reassuring hand on his arm. “Sheldon, it’s perfectly safe to have sex during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. As long as I’m comfortable, there’s no reason to worry.”

Sheldon frowned, clearly not convinced. “But what if—hypothetically speaking—our vigorous activity somehow... disrupts the delicate balance of your uterine environment? I’ve read that certain physical activities can trigger uterine contractions, and while I understand that those are typically harmless, I can’t help but feel... uneasy about it.”

Amy smiled warmly, appreciating the fact that his concerns stemmed from a place of genuine care, even if they were somewhat exaggerated. “Sheldon, it’s sweet that you’re worried, but trust me, everything is fine. My doctor said there’s no reason to avoid it if we both want to.”

Sheldon hesitated, still clearly troubled by the thought. “But what if the baby... knows what we’re doing? I mean, it’s growing inside of you—it’s not entirely unreasonable to assume that it might be aware of external stimuli, right?”

Amy laughed, unable to hold back her amusement at the absurdity of his concerns. “Sheldon, the baby is the size of a lime right now. It’s not exactly sentient. And even if it were, I’m pretty sure it would have more pressing matters to focus on, like developing its organs and growing fingers and toes.”

Sheldon pursed his lips, considering her words. “I suppose that makes sense,” he admitted, though his tone suggested he was still working through the implications in his mind.

Amy leaned in closer, her hand still resting on his arm. “Listen, Sheldon,” she said gently, “if you’re really uncomfortable with it, we don’t have to do anything. But if it’s just your mind overthinking things, then maybe it’s worth giving it a try. I promise, everything will be fine.”

Sheldon looked into her eyes, seeing the sincerity and warmth in her gaze. He knew she was right—his mind had a tendency to spiral into worst-case scenarios, often to the detriment of his own peace of mind. And while the thought of engaging in coitus while she was pregnant still made him nervous, the idea of disappointing her or causing unnecessary stress weighed on him even more.

“Alright,” he finally said, nodding slowly. “I suppose we can proceed as planned. But I reserve the right to call for an immediate cessation if I sense any potential distress—either from you or the baby.”

Amy smiled, leaning in to press a soft kiss to his lips. “Deal,” she whispered against his mouth.

Sheldon felt a warmth spread through him at the touch of her lips, his earlier concerns beginning to melt away. As he kissed her back, he allowed himself to relax, to let go of the anxieties that had been plaguing him all evening. After all, he trusted Amy more than anyone, and if she said it was safe, then it was safe.

As they continued kissing, Sheldon felt a stirring of emotions—affection, desire, and something deeper, something that made his heart race and his hands tremble slightly as they moved to cradle her face.

“Amy,” he whispered between kisses, his voice filled with a mix of awe and affection. “I love you more than... more than...”

He faltered, searching for the right words.

“More than theoretical physics?” Amy teased, pulling back slightly to look into his eyes.

Sheldon nodded earnestly. “Yes, precisely. More than theoretical physics. More than string theory. More than... even more than trains.”

Amy laughed, her heart swelling with love for this man who, despite all his quirks and idiosyncrasies, was entirely hers. “That’s a lot of love, Sheldon.”

“It is,” he agreed, his tone serious. “And it’s all for you.”

Amy’s smile softened, and she leaned in to kiss him again, this time with more intensity, more urgency. Sheldon responded in kind, his earlier worries now a distant memory as he lost himself in the moment, in the feel of her body pressed against his.

The kiss deepened, becoming a heady mix of passion and tenderness, a silent conversation of love and need that neither of them wanted to end. Sheldon’s hands moved from her face to her waist, holding her gently but firmly, as if grounding himself in the reality of the moment.

When they finally pulled apart, breathless and flushed, Sheldon rested his forehead against hers, his heart pounding in his chest. He felt a sense of peace settle over him, a calm that had eluded him earlier in the evening.

“Amy,” he whispered, his voice filled with a mix of awe and affection. “I... I want to make sure you’re comfortable. If at any point you feel the slightest bit of discomfort, we stop, okay?”

Amy smiled, touched by his concern. “Okay, Sheldon. But I think we’ll be just fine.”

Sheldon nodded, still holding her close as they shared a few more lingering kisses, the kind that made his heart race and his mind quiet, before they both headed towards their bedroom.

An hour later, as they lay in bed basked in post-coital bliss, Sheldon felt a sense of contentment that he hadn’t felt in a long time. The worries that had kept him awake earlier now seemed distant, insignificant in the face of the love he shared with Amy. And as Sheldon closed his eyes, with Amy snuggled against him, he knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together—side by side, just as they always had.
