Summary
Max had been spot on when he said life ended after highschool.
From the king of Hatchetfield High to some alcoholic college dropout living in his car, Max had become a loser. Not like the nerdy prudes he used to torment but a genuine sad-sack with nothing worthwhile about him. On complete chance, Max stumbled across one of his victim's -Richie Lipschitz- online only to find him thriving despite everything he'd put him through.
It was admirable and just watching him flourish made Max actually feel happy for the first time since senior year.
He didn't deserve it.
His life had been over for a long time and the only thing making it a bit more bearable was something he wasn't allowed to have. Losing it would be like dying just like he had the second his name was called at graduation; like when he found out he'd lost his scholarship; like the morning he woke up and found his mom missing. Over and over, Max had died and been forced to keep going like the a zombie and he couldn't take much more.
The only escape for him was to take that last step and die for real.
