Work Text:
Egon needs someone to keep him busy.
To put it momentarily, Ghostbusting had come to an end. Unfortunately saving the world from ghosts doesn’t stop you from aging, so he, Ray, Winston, and Peter had to hang up their suits. They talk every now and then over the phone, but 3 out of 4 have wives and kids to care for. Except Spengler, who is getting closer to his 50s with no children at all.
After thinking it through, and talking to Winston, he decided that fostering a kid would be a good idea, for both him and the kid. So here Egon was, outside the local foster care center, debating if he was really ready for this. I mean, taking care of a kid is a big responsibility, and it certainly wouldn’t be easy in the beginning. After gathering the courage to finally walk in, he went up to the front desk to ask what the process would be.
“Hi, I’m here to foster a kid, the woman on the phone said I had an appointment to talk to a few of them.” He told the woman at the desk.
“Ok and what is the name for the appointment?” She asked while flipping through some documents.
“Egon Spengler, the appointment should be for 2 pm.”
“Egon Spengler.. oh! Here it is.” She smiles. “Ok Mr Spengler, Go Right through that blue door on the right and ask to see Ms. Montejahno. She should tell you a bit of info on the kids to get to know them better.”
“Ok. Thanks for the help.” He says while walking towards the door.
Well, no turning back now. He opens the door and finds a woman sitting down at a desk while a group of kids ranging from 7 to 15 doing activities around the room.
“Hi! You must be Mr Spengler.” The woman says as she looks up at him. “I’m Ms. Montejahno, and I’m in charge of this facility.”
Egon puts out his hand. “Hello, yes. a pleasure to meet you, and u can call me Egon.”
“Egon. what brings you here?” She replied.
“Well I’ve been retired for about almost a decade, and I think it would be good to have some company. So I thought, what better than to help foster a kid.” He explained.
“That is very kind of you, Mr Egon. it says here that you were supposed to meet Keith, Heath, and Maggie, but it seems that Keith and Heath are already in the process of going to a foster home at the moment.” She explains.
Egon hadn’t been expecting to foster a girl, but his gut had told him he should stay and meet the kid.
“That’s fine. Tell me about Maggie.” He says waving his hand.
“Well, she’s 14, interested in art, and has been in foster care for almost a year now.” Ms Montejahno stated. “She’s working on an art sculpture right now, made out of dolls. If you go through that door on the left, you’ll see her sitting at one of the tables.”
“Okay. It was great meeting you. Hopefully, Maggie will like me.” He said nervously.
“Don’t worry, she won’t bite. Maggie’s a very sweet girl.” She added.
Spengler stood up from his too-short seat that was obviously made for a kid and twisted open the doorknob before he could change his mind.
Sitting in a chair to the left of the room was a girl with curly Auburn hair down to her waist, big brown eyes, and clear, thick-rimmed glasses. On the table in front of her was a 2 feet high sculpture, that was made out of old American Girl dolls. It seemed she was very passionate about this project, considering Maggie hadn’t even noticed Egon standing there beside her. But when she finally did notice him, she got up from her seat immediately and shook his hand.
“Hi! I’m Maggie. Of course, you already know that, but yeah. I’m sorry about not seeing you earlier, I get pretty caught up in my projects waiting during these things.” She ranted.
It was clear to him that she had been through this a lot in the past year, and he desperately hoped that he would be the person to foster her. To even adopt her, if she let him that is.
“Hi, Maggie. I’m Egon. What are you working on here? I recognize the dolls, I gave one to my friend’s kid for Christmas last year.”
“Well it’s not finished, but I’m working on a life-size sculpture of myself. I still need to add hair, arms, and more height to it.” She grinned. “I was hoping to take it with me if you end up fostering me, If that’s okay with you?”
“Of course, you can bring it with you. I want to foster you, but it’s up to Ms. Montejahno if she lets me or not.” He tells her, trying not to get her and his hopes up.
He knew that she was watching them to see how they interacted, so he decided to ask some questions. The thing is he didn’t know what.
“Well, what are your interests?” He asks, trying to get more familiar with her.
“I mostly make art, but when I’m not doing that I read or watch movies. You?” She answered.
“I’m into science and engineering, but I’m not as young as I used to be.” He joked.
As they were laughing, Ms Montejahno walks in, pulling up a chair in front of them. Probably coming in to tell her decision.
“Hi Maggie, Egon. What are you talking about?” She questioned, more towards Maggie.
“We were talking about how Egon is getting old.” She snorted. “You come to tell us your decision?”
“It’s not my decision, it’s yours. Would you like to go live with Mr. Egon?” She softly asked.
“Yes! I mean-if it’s okay with you, that is?” She turns to him.
“Nothing would make me happier, than fostering you Maggie.” He said, letting himself get his hopes up for once.
“Well, I guess that settles it.” She says while standing up from her seat.
“Start packing Maggie, because once Mr Spengler signs all the paperwork, you get to go to your new home.”
