Summary
With one final heave, Joseph’s head breaks through the surface of the earth, and he gasps, taking in his first real breath of air in what feels like ages. Lifetimes, even. Because that’s technically what this is.
That’s the thing about dying like this. About being killed by the Embalmer. The games don’t even grant him the convenience of waking back up in his room, unscathed, like they would with any other hunter.
Always, Aesop buries him beneath the earth. He dies. And then, he’s forced to claw his way out, and make the impossible journey back.
