"It was little to my understanding how the FAA could certify the aircraft. From what I know from the logistics department, there were missing bolts and screws on the aileron and the wings. 30,000 meters above sea level, and when it got past the storm, detached almost instantly. And no, it wasn't because the militia shot it down."
??? 2:
"How many survivors?"
???:
"Two. There were 200 passengers onboard; all crew members including the captain and co-pilot died. If only I knew who they were..."
??? 2:
"Got out alive like it was nothing. From what I heard, the survivors were Oscar and Sunny. Like best friends along the way, in the forest for 2 straight months! They do have the balls to handle such situation, huh?"
???:
"Sunny is the youngest survivor, Oscar is the oldest. Aged 15-17 from what I know."
??? 2:
"You still have the recording?"
???:
"Yep. Commencing playback."
The following shows sequences of Sunny and Oscar's standoff between Brazilian militants in the Amazon rainforest, a month and a half of their survival after the crash and during the Parajumpers' rescue mission of the two.
Sunny:
[inaudible] "...we're not hostiles! W- were both stranded and we need help! Don't shoot us!"
Militant 1:
"Como podemos dizer que vocês não são agressores? Venha como lhe foi dito, filho!"
Both Oscar and Sunny had little to no understanding of what the militants said since they both don't speak Portuguese. Only a handful of the Parajumpers knew what they were saying.
Militant 2:
[speaking with another militant] "Não atire. Retalie somente quando eu disser."
Militant 1:
"Chefe, acho que não devemos ficar esperando. Não poderíamos dizer com certeza se os americanos vão abrir fogo."
Militant 3:
[shouting at one of the Parajumpers] "O que você tem a ver conosco, forasteiro? Saia, ou enfrente as consequências!"
Parajumper 1:
"Hey, this is no bad matter for the two of us! We just wanted the kids back. We'll leave the perimeter as you wish. Is that good?"
Despite the PJs being friendly and wanted no hostility, the militants were still suspicious. They insisted not to take Oscar and Sunny back home and leave them behind to the militants themselves.
Militant 1:
"Não os levem com vocês, invasores imundos! Deixem as crianças em nossas mãos. Nós conhecemos a liberdade melhor do que vocês, americanos."
Parajumper 2:
"We mean no harm! You don't need the kids! What do you even plan to do with them if we hand them over to you?"
Militant 1:
"Não é da sua conta. Entregue-os para nós, e nós dois faremos um acordo perfeito."
Sunny:
[inaudible] "...are they planning to do to us?"
Oscar:
"No idea. We'll have to stand our ground here and don't make any movement unless necessary."
The confrontation lasted over 30 minutes as Oscar and Sunny stood there, hadn't move a muscle. About time, a Parajumper approached the two and held onto their arms, dragging them away.
Parajumper 2:
"Come." [inaudible] "...best if you both get back to the heli."
"...is it refueled?"
PJ Pilot:
"It is."
Militant 1:
"Ei, EI! NÃO OUSE LEVÁ-LOS COM VOCÊ!"
In an instant, the militant yelled at the Parajumper who was holding the two's arms and fired a warning shot. All of them flinched. As a response, another Parajumper opened fire at another militant on the head, killing them. Moments after, a firefight broke out between the Pararescue Jumpers and the Brazilian militants.
Militant commander:
"NÃO DEIXE QUE ELES ESCAPAREM!"
Oscar and Sunny were immediately rushed to the helicopter as it flew away. Despite the militia's attempt to shoot it down, they were overrun shortly after. However, many Parajumpers died as a result of the rescue attempt; 31 casualties, compared to 1,300 militants who were killed.
Parajumper 4:
[in a chatter with the command center] "Zulu Four to Stronghold 5-5, survivors rescued! Left some of our men dusted, though."
Stronghold 5-5:
"Copy that, Zulu. Bring them back to the base. We'll need another attempt to retrieve the bodies soon. Good job out there, soldier."
Sunny:
"Guess I got to see her again for today..."
Two days after the successful rescue mission, Sunny was reunited back with Mari after a 2-month disappearance from the aircraft crash, while Oscar was reunited back with his family which the FAA are not allowed to disclose the information about them for privacy reasons.
The militia was soon brought to justice and Alvaro Bonçaimo, the militant commander of the Amazonian Armsticemen, was sentenced to life imprisonment and most of his men were either pardoned or faced to an average 20-45 years in prison.
