He Walks in Beauty

Summary:

A poem Aziraphale might write on a drunken night alone, terribly missing his demon and heavily influenced by Lord Byron, but then turned into a villanelle by structure...

Notes:

This is a poem for the Five Words Friday poetry prompt by the Whickber Street Writer's Association

The words were: effervescent, flood, whisper, feather, glow.

First poem I've written in decades, so be kind. ;) I just thought it was a fun idea and something to challenge myself with. A villanelle would for example be Do not go gentle into that dark night by Dylan Thomas. This isn't nearly as deep, though. ;D And the Lord Byron poem that influenced this corny thing of mine, is She Walks in Beauty.

Work Text:

He walks in beauty, like the night
Shades hiding the searing glow of a golden gaze
The best of darkness, yet burning bright

Searing to my core, I put up no fight
Yet dare not whisper of love in my disgrace
He walks in beauty, like the night

In dreams, he comes aloft in flight
Black feathers holding me in a sweet embrace
The best of darkness, yet burning bright

Across my skin, the blazing floods alight
The memory of a smile, leaving me in a daze
He walks in beauty, like the night

Raging effervescent, my desires will indict
Foiled angel, feeble friend. To him, it is he prays
The best of darkness, yet burning bright

Had I but one wish, forever would I keep him in my sight
Evermore mine and mine alone to love, to hold and trace
He walks in beauty, like the night
The best of darkness, yet burning bright
