Work Text:
The end of the night was approaching and the two kids tensed up. Kris’s hand movements became shaky and Noelle held her breath every time her friend next to her had to quickly put on their mask to not get caught by the creepy mascots.
Light the right vent.
Light the left vent.
Light the center hallway, and find some tall skinny blue creature looking back at you waving at you like a restaurant mascot would greet you. It’s big creepy smile that almost reached it's cheeks and the big black eyes staring at you.
Turn on your flashlight, and then turn it off as quickly as possible. Repeat, until the creature is no longer here.
Check the right vent and the left vent again, and spot another creature, almost stuck in the vent and slightly poking out staring at you. Put on your mask, and keep it until it's gone.
Behind them in the bed sat Asriel, who was mostly here to make sure Kris would not lose on purpose to scare Noelle. After having shot at Kris a warning to not forget the music box, he headed towards the window and opened it letting the warm sun rays settle themselves in the room. The diversity of colors signaling the beginning of the sun’s slumber.
Noelle decided that she would not let her fear overtake her, and fixed herself and objective : to not get spooked by the jumpscare that would appear if Kris lost.
But the singing mascot, a short blue creature with a sleeping hat on top of it’s ice shaped face and tears rolling down it’s freckled cheeks quickly made it's sudden appearance on the screen, jumping at Kris and letting a “Game Over” screen quickly follow after. Noelle let out a small scream.
-”I swear the wait for the music box wasn't this short before!”
-”It’s night five Kris it’s obviously gonna be harder !” Asriel regained his place in the bed, motioning at Kris to step aside and to let Noelle play. It was her turn, after all.
With a determined look on her face, she began her night shift. She wanted to prove Kris- no, everyone that she would win the most difficult part of a horror game if she could. However once the night started and she heard the buzzing sound of the fan, she froze. It was as if everything she knew about the game until now had decided to leave her mind. Noticing, Asriel decided to give her instructions throughout the night.
”Dess what are you playing ?” Asriel said, hearing an unfamiliar melody ring from the corner of the bedroom.
“Something new.”
“Wait, are you writing a song ? Kris bounced from the bed.
“Kind of ? I just made it up.”
Kris had headed over to sit right next to Dess while Asriel remained next to Noelle as she let out a scream. Despite her efforts, her fear and her stress got the best of her. The “Game Over” screen gave her a disappointed face. Asriel simply put a paw over her shoulder and gave her a sympathetic smile before heading towards Dess. Noelle followed him.
Everyone remained silent when the doe was practicing. The human broke the silence.
”Dess are you gonna name that song ?”
“No, I mean— I haven't really done or thought about anything yet, I'm just trying something new right now.”
“Do you think I could play it on the piano when we get back home ?”
“’Oh yes, you two could make a duo !” Noelle was ecstatic about the idea of a duo between Dess and Kris.
“Sure but the song is still not finished okay ? I may drop the thing if it annoys me too much y’know. But I'll try to finish it so you can play it, Kris.”
The song was slow and had a lot of pauses in it, it was a comforting melody that could be heard across the Dreemurr residence. And if you looked closely, it seemed like Dess was mumbling some lyrics while playing. The occasional mistakes would break the rhythm and Dess would have to start again, but every time the music played it felt nostalgic, even though the song was one that was just made up.
Kris could hardly keep their legs from swinging over the excitement of trying out this song on piano.
