Misery In The Moon’s Shadow

Summary:

Misery.

That was all that Indigo felt.
——————————————————
A half-assed attempt at an alternate ending for the last episode of Rainbow Bubblegem’s first season, “We Are The Rainbow”. Contains spoilers.

Notes:

So… first work for this fandom! I don’t know if I should be proud of this or not… Enjoy, I suppose?

Work Text:

Misery.

That was all that Indigo felt.

After Purple Star had sacrificed herself to defeat the vile Black Dia, her friends and those from some of the other kingdoms tried searching for her, but no trace of her could be found.

What made it worse was that during the final battle, the Bubblegem had exploded with her sacrifice. So in the end, the heroes won, but at a hefty cost - a cost nobody desired.

The cries and screams of the young princesses upon realizing that Purple Star was gone for good would forever be etched in Indigo’s mind. Even the Purple King was sobbing… a rare occasion for him.

Whitegold tried assuring her that none of this was her fault and that she would be properly remembered. But before she could speak another word, the grief-stricken Indigo had dashed out of sight into the darkness of the depths.

And this was where she is now. Alone, curled in a ball, and crying. There wasn’t a single creature, be it mermaid or fish, for miles. No one else to comfort her. And maybe that was a good thing.

Whatever she said to her earlier was a lie.

Her mother’s sacrifice, the fall of her kingdom, the discovery of her powers, bearing witness to Purple’s sacrifice, only to do nothing about it… All of this was her fault. And nothing in the world could convince her otherwise. She had only just started to open her heart to others, and this was her reward: An ever-growing burden that would only grow in weight and regret.

She would have to live with the pain of this moment for years to come. Heck, maybe until death decided to be merciful and end her here and now.

But now wasn’t that time… because at the end of the day, despite “saving” the world, she was only a child.

A child that wasn’t truly meant to be a princess.

The only logical thing she could do from here… was swim.

Swim away from everything and everyone. Don’t let them find you.

And swim she did.

She swam away as fast as she could, and while doing so, her tiara slipped off by how fast she was swimming. She didn’t dare retrieve it as she swam further and further away, leaving the last memory of the Deep Sea Kingdom to be buried among the ocean sands.

She would make sure nobody would find her.

And from there, Indigo Keen, the seventh member of the courageous princesses that saved the sea from certain doom was gone. The glistening moon had vanished along with the faded stars that supported it… and now, only five colors remained.

Five heartbroken princesses were left standing after that fateful day.

The rainbow will never be completed. It will remain forever shattered…

Just like Indigo.

Notes:

This was the living embodiment of the “there was an attempt” meme. Regardless, hope you enjoyed it (or not).
