Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

The king paced back and forth as he heard distressed noises coming from behind closed wooden doors. He was muttering prayers under his breath, praying that everything would go smoothly. This wasn’t the first time that he waited outside the doors but the anxiety never went away. Hearing his beloved in such pain and agony was a sound that haunted him since he knew that there was nothing he could do to help her.

“Your majesty, you need to take deep breaths. The queen is a very strong woman, I’m sure that everything is according to plan,” the attendant said, trying his best to comfort the king.

“I know she’s strong, but hearing her like that isn’t pleasant. I would do anything to take away that pain from her,” he said as he finally stopped his pacing.

The sounds of pain came to an end and came the sound of a baby crying. The king felt his heart beat faster knowing that the baby was finally born. He wasn’t sure who he was blessed with. He would love to have another daughter since he adored his darling daughter, but he wouldn’t mind having a son as well. As long as the baby was healthy and his wife was fine, he couldn’t care less about the gender of the infant.

The doctor opened the door so the king could enter. She quickly told him that both the mother and baby were safe, and the delivery went smoothly. A sigh of relief escaped him as he thanked the doctor for her work.

He walked over to his tired wife who held a small bundle of blankets. She had an exhausted expression on her face but there was a hint of pride as she looked down at the bundle. He sat down on the edge of the bed and peered over to see the face of his new child. A small tuft of pink hair was peaking from the blanket. It was still crying but it didn’t bother them in the slightest, it just meant that their baby was alive.

“Is it a boy or a girl?” he asked her gently.

“It's a boy. Meet your son,” she replied, giving her husband a tired smile.

“Hello Hyoma,” he said the infant's name with so much pride.

On December 23, Prince Hyoma Chigiri was born.

Kasumi was excited to have a younger sibling. She often thought about what it would be like to have a younger sibling. For a while, she thought that her mother would be having a girl. She often daydreamed about dressing up and having her younger siblings' hair done.

Sitting by her mother’s bedside, Kaumi looked down at the small bundle in her arms. He looked so small in her arms and she couldn’t believe it.

“Do you want to hold him, Kasumi?” Her mother asked her with a small smile.

“Can I?”

“You’re old enough, sweetie.”

She gently handed Kasumi the infant and the young girl looked down at him. He was heavier than she expected him to be but she still held him with great care. Her long pink hair fell from her shoulder and tickled the baby's nose. He let out a small sneeze which made her fawn over him even more.

“I’m going to be the best big sister to you Hyoma. I promise to always protect you,” Kasumi whispered to him.

Their mother smiled as she watched her daughter whisper a sweet promise. She placed a kiss on the top of her head, moving the strand of hair behind her ear to prevent it from tickling the baby’s nose again.

The young prince yawned and fell asleep in his big sister's arms. Kasumi blinked a few times, not expecting the baby to sleep. She looked back up at her mother for clarification.

“Momma, is it normal for babies to take this early of a nap?” she asked her.

“Of course, sweetie. When you were a baby, you slept all of the time. It looks like your brother is following your footsteps,” her mother chuckled as she wrapped her arm around her daughter. “And by the looks of it, you need a nap too.”

Kasumi pouted at her mother's response as she yawned as well. The queen took the baby from her sleepy child, listening to her tired protests. She took her by the hand and guided her to her bedroom. Placing the baby in the bassinet, she picked up Kasumi and carried her to her bed.

“Sleep well my little flower. May you and your brother have the sweetest dreams,” she whispered in her ear before placing a kiss on the princess’s forehead.

-

“Kasu, my hair keeps getting in my face!” the young prince complained while pushing his long pink bangs out of the way.

The princess giggled at the sight of her younger brother. She walked over to him and pulled out one of her hair clips. Kneeling down in front of him, she moved his hair out of the way and placed the clip there.

“There! Now you can use both of your eyes instead of just your left one.” Kasumi giggled.

“Thanks!” Hyoma smiled brightly at his older sister.

“Your Highness, wouldn't it be best if you cut your hair? That way it won’t get in the way,” one of the maids offered.

Hyoma looked at the maid and back to his older sister. Tears filled his eyes and he started crying while clinging on to Kasumi. Both of them were surprised form this reaction and did their best to calm down the young child.

“Hyoma, why are you crying?” Kasumi asked with concern.

“If I cut my hair then-then I can’t match with Kasu!” Hyoma exclaimed in between sobs.

She let out a small chuckle and pulled her brother into a warm embrace. He cried into her chest as she tried her best to comfort him. It made her smile knowing that her brother wanted to match with her so desperately.

“I can teach you how to take care of your hair! That way it would bother you that much,” Kasumi said, coming up with a compromise.

Hyoma pulled back, wiping his tears away. He pondered the idea for a minute before slowly nodding his head. The young prince liked the idea of his older sister teaching him different ways to take care of his hair.

“Come on, I’ll show you right now!”

The young girl took her brother's hand and took him to her room so she could teach him everything she knew about styling hair. The maid chuckled to herself and followed the two children to the room to keep a watchful eye on them.
