But the number of Grimm has risen and a new darkness is coming. Will history repeat itself or will the new heroes be able to write their own story?

Chapter 1: Legacies

Chapter Text

Remnant, Patch Island

A teenage girl kneeled before a polished gravestone, gently brushing her fingers against the engraved name set in the center. She had messily layered dark brown hair that brushed against her shoulders, the dark brown strands transitioning to red as they reached the tips, her skin was lightly tanned and there was a splash of freckles across her cheeks, lastly, she had unique silver eyes framed by thick lashes.

She wore a cream-colored ruffled short-sleeved, off-shoulder blouse with a dark brown waist cincher with green laces and a rich pine green skirt with dark brown tulle underneath that went down to her mid-thighs. She also wore black leggings and calf-high dark brown boots with pine green laces. Lastly, over the entire outfit, she wore a hooded jade green cloak that was pinned to her shoulders by small rose-shaped buttons.

"Hey grandma," she said softly, she held her hands out over the gravestone, and a jade-colored aura flowed from her hands, washing over the gravestone and the surrounding area; a moment later, beautiful flowers started to bloom all around the stone. "I'll be leaving tomorrow with Willa and my cousins. I wish Mom was here, dad's freaking out a bit about me leaving. He says I don't need to go but I want to be a great Huntress, like you and Mom." She stood up, looking at the collection of roses, lilies, and poppies that now covered the grave of Summer Rose, her grandmother. "Wish me luck." She smiled before she turned from the grave, heading back home.

She had just reached her family's cabin when she saw her cousin rush out in greeting, an excited smile on her face.

"Hey! Where did you go Jaida?" Saffron Belladonna asked. She was her Aunt Yang and Aunt Blake's youngest daughter at eighteen, one year older than her.

Saffron was a fox faunus, with fair skin, thick, wavy orange-red hair that flowed to her waist, large, mischievous amber-gold eyes, and of course, fox ears sticking proudly out of her thick wavy hair.

She wore an open burnt orange jacket that stopped at her mid-waist, the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, a black crop top, and close-fitting black pants with black-and-orange combat boots. She also wore yellow-orange bracelets over dark red-brown armbands.

"Just to see grandma," she said back, letting out a choked laugh when Saffron hugged her tightly. "Is everyone already here?"

Saffron nodded, "The plan was for all of us to go to Beacon together, right? Sorry, we couldn't get here earlier, Mom was busy."

Jaida nodded in understanding; she didn't need to ask which of Saffron's moms was busy. Aunt Blake usually took on too much work at a time to improve living conditions for the Faunus all around Remnant, while also being a Huntress, honestly, Jaida didn't know how she did it all while still being a super mom for her Saffron and her brother.

"I'm glad you could make it; it's been too long since I've seen you. Is Tai here?" She asked, looking at Saffron questioningly.

Saffron shook her head, pouting slightly. "He said his Team wanted to go back to Shade Academy earlier and he joined them. What a buzzkill."

"Well, I'm sure he doesn't want to miss out on any training or adventures his team goes on before the school year." Jaida smiled, a buzz of excitement going through her as she thought of Beacon. She was going in as a first year and she knew she wanted to spend all her time with her teammates.

How could she not be excited? She had grown up on the stories of her mom's team, Team RWBY. They had gone through so many adventures together and saved Remnant from Salem. She could only hope her time in school could be as exciting, but she didn't voice that to any of the adults too much; she knew it had been a hard battle won, the war with Salem had taken a lot out of them, and her family had lost so many people they had loved.

Her family were heroes, but she knew that none of them wanted the title, if anything, she knew they would trade being called heroes for all the loved ones they lost, if she were in their shoes, she'd do the same thing.

She could only hope that her team went on countless adventures together without the threat of a world-ending war.

"-Earth to Jaida! What's gotten into you." Jaida blinked and looked at Saffron sheepishly, running her hand through her hair as her cousin gave an exasperated sight.

"Sorry," Jaida laughed, "I'm just thinking about Beacon. I can't wait to meet my teammates! I wonder who they'll be?" She asked, her eyes turning dreamy as she once again thought of her future team.

Saffron laughed, "Worry about passing initiation first, Cuz."

"You say it like I won't pass." Jaida huffed.

"I'm sure you will." Both girls looked up to see two other girls walk up to them. The one who had spoken was a young woman with black hair in a messy ponytail, lightly tanned skin, and violet eyes.

She wore a pale gray collared shirt under a double-breasted wine-colored sleeveless vest with two brown belts wrapped around her waist. She also had dark brown pants and black knee-high boots, around her neck she wore a red scarf and had black fingerless gloves.

"I will too," the younger girl stated, her head held high. She had pale skin, bright sky blue eyes, and white hair that reached past her shoulders, the top half of her hair being pulled into a neat bun, held in place by a snowflake pin.

She was dressed in a strapless thigh-length dress that had a sweetheart neckline; the dress started as dark silver at the bodice before transitioning to a pale wisteria at the skirt of the dress which also had white tulle underneath. Over the dress, she had on a sleeveless bolero jacket, and on her arms, she wore detached dark silver sleeves that flared out at her elbows. Finishing her outfit were a pair of heeled calf-length white boots. Most noticeable about her however was that she had a silky white money tail that swayed behind her.

"Wren! Willa!" Jaida rushed forward and threw her arms around her eldest female cousin and best friend. "I'm so glad we're all going to Beacon together!" She cheered happily.

Willa squirmed in her hold, "Wren and Saffron aren't in the same year as us though."

"Doesn't matter!" Jaida pulled away so her friends could breathe. "The point is that we'll all be together. We'll have to show Saffron and Wren up!"

Willa laughed, "I can agree to that." She glanced at the older two girls, a confident smile on her lips.

"Hey!" Saffron grabbed Jaida and pulled her into a headlock, "Don't get cocky you two!" She playfully rubbed her fist against her cousin's head as she struggled to get away. "I'm a second year, you'll have to work hard to give me a run for my money. You might be able to show Wren up though. Being a third year, I'm sure she'll let her guard down against you freshman." She grinned, giving the black-haired teen a teasing look.

Wren calmly crossed her arms and smiled back, "I doubt they can take me when you haven't beaten me in a spar."

"What was that?" Saffron immediately dropped Jaida, causing the younger girl to face plant onto the floor, unable to catch herself in time due to the sudden release. Saffron took a step closer to Wren, a challenge in her eyes. "How about a spar?"

"You're on." Wren smiled back.

"Willa wanna spar too?" Jaida asked excitedly, bouncing back up to her best friend with a gleam in her eyes.

"Sure, just don't cry to your dad when you lose," Willa said, though her tone was calm, the excited swaying of her tail gave away how excited she was.

"Girls!" They all looked towards the cabin that was Jaida's home to see her dad, Oscar Pine. He was dressed simply in a well-worn white shirt and black farming pants, an orange bandana tied around his neck. He had aged well, his skin a bit darker from working in the sun and his hair a bit shaggier than it had been when he was a teen, there were also hints of gray in his hair. But his face still looked youthful.

"Hi, dad!" Jaida waved at him. "Did you need something?"

"I'm just telling you girls not to spar in the fields, if you want to practice do it in the back," Oscar called back. "And be careful, the last thing you guys need are injuries before school starts."

"Got it, Uncle Oscar, you don't have to worry!" Saffron said, leading the charge towards the back with the rest trailing after her. "Last one there has to do five extra laps before practice."

"Not fair!" Jaida whined from the back, pumping her legs faster to catch up.

Oscar watched the girls disappear behind the back of the cabin and shook his head, laughing lightly before looking out towards the fields of vegetation he had been able to grow on Patch. He had loved growing the fields with Ruby and her father when he moved to Patch after the war. It had given him something to do once the rebuilding of Remnant after the war had been done.

So many Hunters and Huntresses had wanted him to help lead after the war with Salem, but that wasn't what he had wanted. He spent all of his energy helping to rebuild Remnant, Atlas, and Vale especially but after... he didn't want a leadership role, he left that to Robyn, Weiss, and Blake; what he wanted a quiet life with Ruby, and somehow, he got it.

Ruby had remained a Huntress, but they had moved to Patch to build their lives together, living in the cabin that Ruby and Yang had grown up in with her dad. It had been hard at first, they both had nightmares because of the war and struggled to talk to each other, but as each year passed, they were able to heal together and had Jaida, and then a few years later Opal. His daughters were his blessing, and he was grateful that he was able to watch them grow up, he just wished Ruby was able to see them grow too.

"Oscar?" He jumped when he heard Weiss' voice from behind him, there was an understanding look on her face and a sad smile. "I miss her too."

"It's been five years." Oscar sighed. "Five years since she went missing Weiss."

"I know, but if there's anything I know about Ruby, it's that she's still fighting to get back to you and the girls," Weiss said comfortingly, putting her hand on his shoulder, she missed her partner just as much as he missed her.

"I know." Oscar sighed, "And I'll never stop waiting for her to come home."

"Come on!" Saffron was hopping from foot to foot, facing Wren, the bracelets that she had around her wrist before had transformed into her dual-range shot gauntlets; they were fashioned after her mom's own Ember Celica and worked the same, but her gauntlets were called Amber Caele.

Wren on the other hand had her bladed tonfas, out and ready to strike. The blades were on the outer edge of her arms, jaded and overlapping, making the blades look like a bird's wing, together the tonfas were called Swooping Songbirds.

"You better not regret it later," Wren said before launching herself at her cousin, striking down on her head with the tonfa held in her left hand, the blades slicing against Saffron's gauntlet. Her semblance, Emotion Reading, was already active as she ducked under Saffron's punch. She could taste her excitement and confidence on her tongue, it was savory and sweet at the same time.

"As if I'd ever," Saffron laughed, she punched out with her fists, sending a barrage of bullets at Wren, causing her to lift the tonfas in front of her body, using the blades as a shield from Saffron's bullets... and there it was, she could feel as Saffron's confidence grew, making her cocky.

She quickly clicked on the trigger on her tonfas handle twice, transforming the tonfas into a pair of bladed pistols. Wren quickly fired shot after shot at the orange-haired faunus, blocking her fist with one of her pistols before firing the other one at Saffron's face.

Saffron ducked in time to avoid the shot, a frazzled look on her face before she jumped back up, charging once again at the older teen. But as she ran, she activated her semblance, Radiance, causing a fiery orange glow to envelope her body before splitting off of her, creating fiery orange clones that lunged at Wren, exploding when they got close to her.

Wren jumped out of the way, shooting each clone and causing them to explode early much to Saffron's annoyance.

The two closed the gap between them and started to fight in close quarters, Wren expertly dodging Saffron's fist, parrying the gauntlets with the pistols. Wren kicked Saffron away and as she slid back, the faunus punched the air, sending an array of bullets toward Wren.

Wren quickly spread out the blades on her pistols and once again used the blades as a shield from Saffron's bullets before firing her own volley of bullets at the Faunus.

Saffron dodged before planting her feet into the ground, creating more clones to charge at Wren.

The older girl shot at the clones, exploding two of them before one got too close, forcing her to hit it with a pistol, causing it to explode in front of her and send her skidding back, creating the opening that Saffron needed.

She charged forward, creating more exploding clones and having them run ahead of her to catch Wren in another explosion, but this time she was prepared; she lightly tapped on the triggers of her pistol, transforming them both back into tonfas, but this time the blades were longer, like large blade-like fans.

She swiped at the clones, using the blades as a buffer so the explosion didn't catch her before rotating her body on her toes and cutting down against Saffron's chest as she neared, hitting her dead center since the younger girl didn't have time to dodge and sending her tumbling to the ground.

Saffron groaned, shooting Jaida an annoyed look when the younger teen started clapping. "Wren won!"

"That was a lucky hit!" Saffron protested, getting up and dusting herself off.

"Well, the rule is first to the ground loses," Willa shrugged from behind the teen. "Now it's our turn." She added, looking at Jaida who nodded.

The two seventeen-year-olds took position opposite each other, readying themselves for the other to attack.

"You guys can start whenever you're ready," Wren called from the sidelines, Saffron sulking beside her.

"Got it!" Jaida reached for her waist, unraveling her whip, Blooming Rose, that hung at her side; her green aura immediately started to cover the whip, and vines with wicked-looking thorns immediately wrapped around the material of the whip, enforcing it. It was her semblance, Flora.

Willa calmly pulled out her sword, activating her family's semblance, Glyphs, and launched herself with extra speed at Jaida, her sword, swiping in a large arc and sending icicles flying at the other teen.

Jaida's whip immediately slashed through the air, breaking through the icicles before striking at Willa.

The white-haired teen created a glyph to block it, creating more icicles a second later and launching them at Jaida before propelling herself to the side with a dark purple glyph that appeared at her feet and sending an arc of fire created with dust at her friend.

Jaida broke apart the icicles with her whip before hurriedly rolling out of the way of the flames, her whip glowing with her aura as pink flowers sprouted from the vines.

She snapped the whip in Willa's direction, the flowers breaking apart and the leftover petals flying toward like darts; they would have pierced her if she hadn't blocked them with another glyph.

She brought her sword, Anemone to face level before pressing the trigger that was hidden inside the hilt, instead of firing a bullet, a hidden short sword dropped down into her waiting left hand. She effortlessly twirled the hilt in her hand before settling it in a reverse grip as she charged.

In retaliation, Jaida sharply snapped her whip until it straightened, turning it into a double-bladed spear with vines wrapped around the handle.

The swords and spear clashed over and over, when Jaida tried to swipe Blooming Rose across Willa's body the other girl dodged, throwing her shorter sword in the air and catching it with her tail, parrying Jaida's next strike with the extra appendage.

Jaida scoffed at that, it always surprised her when Willa used her tail to strike, but she shouldn't have been surprised, that tail while sensitive if unexpectedly pulled was strong.

She pulled a few plant seeds from her pocket, coating them with her aura before throwing them at Willa; they exploded sharp thorns mid-air, raining down over her head.

Willa twirled on her toes to dodge out of the way, and if she hadn't had her swords, held out, Jaida would have mistaken her for a ballet dancer doing a routine, she was light on her feet; she then summoned a glyph, enhancing it with lightning dust to shoot lightning bolts at her.

The two girls charged at each other again but before their weapons could clash, a voice called out, "Girls! Dinner time!"

Jaida skidded to a stop, glancing at the cabin to see her Aunt Yang standing at the door, waving them over. "Dinner?" Jaida asked excitedly, her eyes gleaming.

Willa clumsily crashed into her, not expecting Jaida's sudden stop, sending both girls to the ground with a groan. "Really?!" She demanded, pushing herself up and shooting Jaida an annoyed look. "How could you let food distract you?"

"Hey! I haven't eaten since breakfast!" Jaida protested, dusting herself off. "I was packing and too nervous to eat lunch."

Willa scoffed, but sheathed Anemone, combing the two swords back into one. "You'll struggle in Beacon if you let your stomach guide you."

"I'll do better in school," Jaida said confidently, "Just you watch."

Somehow Willa doubted that the thought of sweets and snacks was a powerful distraction to Jaida, she doubted Beacon would change that. "Whatever you say." She shrugged, leading the way into the cabin.

"Nice spar kiddo," her Uncle Qrow, he had come out to watch the sparring the moment Jaida and Willa had started, standing next to his daughter, Wren. "But in real-life scenarios try not to let your stomach distract you."

"I won't, this was a one-time thing," Jaida promised, pouting when she saw the amused glance Wren shared with her father.

"Sure, it was." Saffron laughed, hooking her arm around Jaida's neck and leading her inside.

Jaida allowed it, it would be the last time they would all be here for dinner together for a while; the kids were heading off to school and the adults would be resuming their Huntsmen duties or jobs, she knew she had to cherish this time as much as she could.

Jaida sat on the back porch, staring up at the full moon, it was so clear and bright, it was one thing she knew she'd miss in Beacon. Was the moon as bright there?

"Shouldn't you be asleep? Big day tomorrow." Her dad joined her on the porch, easily sliding down to sit next to her.

"I'm too nervous to sleep..." Jaida confessed, "Do you think she would be proud of me?"

"Your mother was always proud of you," Oscar said easily, smiling softly at her. "She would be proud no matter what you choose to do."

"I know," Jaida nodded, glancing at her dad, they had so many similarities, she was glad. "Are you proud?" She knew that he was nervous about her leaving and with good reason with his wife missing. She knew he was also anxious about Beacon, wondering if her school years would mirror her mother's.

"I've always been proud of you." Oscar hugged her tightly, "You were born to be a Huntress, just like your mother, and all I ask is that you be careful."

"Of course, I will," Jaida promised. "Nothing bad will happen, and I'll have Wren, Saffron, and Willa there with me, and my team!"

"I'm going to be the best Huntress there ever was!" Jaida said confidently.

"I know you will." Oscar agreed, smiling. After all, his daughter came from a long line of talented Huntresses, so it made sense that she'd continue the tradition. He could only hope she didn't follow in Summer or Ruby's path; he wouldn't let her vanish without a trace.

The next morning, Jaida watched Patch disappear from view as the airship lifted her, Willa, and her cousins away from the island, taking them to Beacon.

"Are you nervous?" Willa asked.

"No." Jaida lied, glancing at her friend, "Are you?"

"Of course not." Willa held her head high, "What's there to be nervous about?"

"Good point," Jaida grinned, settling in her seat, now that they were heading towards Beacon, true excitement was filling her; she'd finally be able to start her adventures and be a great Huntress like her mom.

And that's the end of the first chapter!

Here is some world info, additional information, the rules, and the SYOC form can be found on my profile page on Fanfiction.net. Once again, forms are due on September 30.

World Building Info:

1. It has been twenty-five years since Team RWBY and their allies defeated Salem.

2. Vale and Beacon were rebuilt after the war.

3. Jaune is the Headmaster at Beacon Academy

4. Once Salem was defeated Ozpin supposedly left Oscar, only leaving Oscar's soul in his body.

5. All the Maidens during RWBY, Winter, Raven, and Cinder have died.

6. Seven years before the start of the story the number of Grimm began to rise to concerning numbers

7. Ruby Rose disappeared five years ago while investigating the rising number of Grimm.

8. I plan for the focus to be on four Huntsmen Teams in Beacon, none of my OCs will be on the same Team.

9. Part of the truth about Ozpin, the relics, the Maidens, and Salem were shared with Remnant. Not everything, but after the war, it was agreed upon that some knowledge had to be shared. After all, the secrets that Ozpin held by himself hurt Team RWBY and their allies too. Current governments are hoping that by being a bit more open, they can prevent the hurt and distrust that happen when secrets are spilled.

A Note: for this story, a big theme is: The wheel of time repeating, do things eventually happen again, or can new stories be made by a new generation of Huntsmen/Huntresses?

SYOC FORM

Rules and Notes:

1. I will be accepting twelve OCs. Please no Mary or Gary sues, make your characters as detailed and complex as possible. But please do not make them OP.

2. I am willing to accept two submissions per author, but there will be no promises that both get in.

3. Beacon usually starts accepting first years at the age of 17, Ruby if I remember correctly was a large exception to the rule since she started at Beacon at age 15, two years early. So I will not be accepting anyone 15.

4. Just a reminder, but both Jaida and Willa's Team names have been decided so JADE and WNTR, if you want your OC to be on their teams, their first name will have to start with A, D, or E for Jaida's team and N, T or R for Willa's team. As I said, Wren and Saffron's teams will be more flexible with names.

5. I am not completely opposed to more next-gen characters, if it makes sense, (Ex: The kid of Nora and Ren, Neptune, Coco), but I would l prefer if your OCs aren't too connected to existing characters.

6. If you have any questions please just ask, I'm always willing to work things out or answer questions with you guys.

7. I WILL NOT accept any submissions through reviews, only through PMs.

8. I plan on trying to spread time between teams equally, Jaida won't be the only main focus for the story. I want all Teams to be equally shown.
