It's been a long and lonely journey, fighting against the Grimm, for countless years.
However, Ozpin is surprised to find correspondence from an old acquaintance, as well as a helping hand.This story is by no means canon compliant. In fact, the bones of this work was created in the first years of RWBY's existence, I think Chapter 3 had just finished when I started concepting this story. I've tried to publish multiple times, but I've consistently failed. Though the lore is mildly in-line with the lore of the original RWBY, there are points of divergence.

They are not Grimm, Human or Faunus but instead an entire army of Machines from beyond their atmosphere. The multi planet conflict known as the Clone Wars have caused the Confederacy of Independent Nations to find any advantage against their Republic foes and, within the confines of the Unknown Region, they have found a suitable planet from which to build an even larger droid army away from Republic eyes.
The people of Remnant are unprepared and outgunned from an enemy that they don't know. Ruby, Jaune and all their friends must give it their all if they are to even survive against this threat, because victory will be all but impossible.......

Long ago, a War was waged... a conflict for the very nature of human and faunuskind. A conflict to assert whether emotion, the driving force of creation, would be banished, or protected.
On one side, the enforcers of order that would give up their kinds' souls for its sake. Mantle and Mistral.
On the other, the guardians of mortality's greatest asset: Their heart, which set them apart from the beasts and the Grimm that they so hated. Vacuo and Vale.
As we know, it would be the protectors who would win the day. The mortal soul would be preserved.
In another world, that would be that, and an era of peace between the four kingdoms would be that conflict's only legacy.
But here... Mantle is not defeated. Instead, it is betrayed. And so, they turn their back on the world, and build walls instead of bridges. Mantle became Atlas, nothing short of a nation-sized fortress, with no ways in, or out.
History changes and stirs. But the hope of a simpler, gentler soul can endure even when faced with history's greatest divergences.

Maybe it was because he was kind when she was sitting in a crater of her own making. Or maybe it was because he’d somehow managed to trip over air during initiation, and she still wasn’t sure how that was physically possible. Maybe it was his semblance.
Whatever the reason, Ruby’s eyes kept drifting toward him lately, like her brain had decided he was supposed to be her newest hyper-fixation, right next to weaponry and cookies.
“Ruby?”
She jolted upright. Weiss stood behind her, arms crossed, eyebrow arched in that signature I’m judging you but also concerned way.
“What are you doing?” Weiss asked.
“Nothing!” Ruby squeaked. “Just… hallway stuff. Standing... and breathing.”
Weiss pinched the bridge of her nose. “Fine. Do whatever you want. Just... stop lurking behind corners like some kind of stalker.”
